Great addition to the series

4/5

This pdf is 32 pages long, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial, 1 page SRD and 2 pages advertisements, leaving 27 pages for the 101 spells. So let's dive in!

After 4 pages of spell-lists, the new spells are introduced.
4th level has always been a peculiar one for my players and me: With dispel magic and the classic battle-spells like fireball and lightning bolt, 3rd level spells have traditionally been the ones my players anticipated. 4th level on the other hand...has almost always been one of the spell-levels that still has some spells left when the party rests. Subsequently, my players have not been too stoked about this level and thus, I'm hoping for this book to change that. Let's take a look whether it succeeds and which spells catch my eye, positive and negative.

Among the 101 spells were several that caught my eye, and I'll endeavor to give you some of the cool concepts contained herein: "Borrow Limb" lets you temporarily use an additional severed limb - creepy, cool, I love it. "Chaotic Blast" is a hasardeurs/chaos mages battle spell and extremely versatile. "Dying Vengeance" is a nice curse for bards."Fold" temporarily folds you into one square, making this an extremely cool plot/infiltration spell. "Foresight of the Just Warrior" is the first of several extremely cool paladin spells that caught my eye - it is feat-dependant, i.e. it can only be cast if you have power attack, but always makes your attack use the ideal amount of atk/damage exchange. "Hand of Time" speeds time for magic effects, essentially ending them faster - unfortunately also the beneficial ones. For all the people who want their paladin to become martyrs and make their character's ultimate sacrifice meaningful, we get "Last Act", which gives you one last round, even when you're dead, and "True Sacrifice", which sacrifices your life to resurrect another one. There were also some spells I didn't care too much for: "Boorishness" drops charisma of a foe to 1, essentially being a "save-or-suck"-spell for bards and sorcerors. "Sonic Blast" is a cone that deals sonic damage and just felt like filler. "Stomach Bloom" lets the target vomit up acid, damaging both him and an adjacent enemy. The damage is evenly divided between both. However, I'm not entirely sure, whether the target receives all the damage when there's no-one in vomiting range."Zone of Mishap" potentially makes casters fizzle a lot, but from the description I'm not entirely sure whether the caster is exempt from the spells effect or whether he has to check against his own spell.

Conclusion:
Editing and formatting are top-notch, I didn't notice any mistakes. The pdf is extensively bookmarked and layout adheres to the two-column-RiP-standard. The b/w-artworks are ok, though I've seen more beautiful ones in RiP-books. The quality of the crunch is top and I liked more spells than I didn't. 4th level becomes much more interesting thanks to this book and especially paladins get a LOT of awesome spells, though I would have loved to see the feat-concept further evolved. In spite of my praise, though, e.g. the 0- or 9th level installments felt a bit more imaginative to me. Thus, I'll settle for a final verdict of 4 stars - a good book of spells that helps casters make 4th level spells just as exciting as 3rd ones.

Another good one in the series.

My review, posted at ENworld and Drivethru as well.

This product is 32 pages long. The first 2 pages are the cover and credits, then it goes into the spell lists. (4 pages)
Bards – 26 spells
Cleric – 31 spells
Druid – 22 spells
Paladin – 22 spells
Ranger – 14 spells
Wizard/Sorc was broken up by school – 66 spells
Abjuration – 8 spells
Conjuration – 7 spells
Divination – 7 spells
Enchantment – 11 spells
Evocation – 11 spells
Illusion – 5 spells
Necromancy – 5 spells
Transmutation – 12 spells
Next it gets into the spell descriptions. (23 pages) I counted a 102 spells but I might have counted wrong. There was a lot of spells I liked or just found interesting, some examples.

Armor Plating – You merge armor plates with your body for awhile giving you AC and DR with no armor check.

Bestow Affliction – permanently afflict the target with a curse like ability.

Blood Curse – Cause the target to bleed badly from wounds. Aka double damage. I love the spell but would have liked it if the spell did damage over time instead of a straight double to fit the fluff better.

Boorish – reduces the targets charisma to a 1 for the duration.

Chaotic Blast – does random attack, attack type random, area random, even damage random. It just seems like a fun spell.

Curse of Wanderlust – It causes a target to wander off in a random direction. Though the spell says permanent, it also says they must travel for 8 hours. So my guess is after traveling for 8 hours the spell ends but it is not perfectly clear.

Dying Vengeance – Cast when you well die. It cause Charisma damage each day if left unchecked. If it reaches zero the target dies and can never be rezed.

Escape Bonds of Flesh – Causes the target skeleton to try and tear free from the body. If the dmg done drops them to -10 the skeleton does just that and becomes a undead under the control of the caster. Horrific spell and I love it.

Eyes of Decay – Makes the target see the world as a hellish horrific place for the duration.

Multi-image – a advance mirror image.

Portrait of the Wanted – Caster draws a image of the last person to touch a object.

Prophets Eye – Lets you see, feel, hear, taste etc what the target does.

Subvert Charm – You steal someone else charmed subject, make them act as if you had been the one to cast the charm spell.

True Sacrifice – Caster dies and can never be rezed, but target is rezed.

Warriors Insight – Sorc/Wiz spell that boosts their BaB, dmg and AC for duration of spell.

Then there was some spells I was meh about.

Brilliant Weapon – turns the weapon into a energy based weapon that bypasses armor. I was meh about it because it is a sorc/wiz only, last only one round. That and I keep thinking light saber.

Confessions Hand – it forces someone to write out answers truthfully. I just thought it was a bit high level for what it does.

Last Act – Ignore any conditions including death for the duration of the spell. Why it is meh is cause it has a 1 round duration.

Secret Missive – Lets the caster add a secret message into text. Others can make a linguistics check to read it. My only problem with it, is it seems to high of level for what it does.

Closing thoughts, like the first three of the series it is a group of new spells. Just like before some of the spells are listed at other levels for classes as well, but all of them in the book is a 4th level spell for one class. The art work is fair to good, art by Claudio Pozas, Joe Calkins, and Hugo Solis. I didn't notice any errors and it was well written. Most of the spells are good, well done, interesting and fitting in power. There was a few more I thought was to weak or powerful to be 4th level but only a few. Though that is to be expected as the levels go up, things get more subjective. This one had less than the last one of spells I felt was to high or low and fewer spells I was meh on. So whats my rating? This time I am going to have to give it a 4.5 star. The spells where good on par with the first two in the series.

I wanted to thank you to dark mistress for taking the time to do a review of our product, I will make sure to clarify in the erratta that curse of wanderlust is permanent and requires that they must travel for 8 hours each day, rather than just once.

I am still hoping for a web enhancement that includes the new APG classes spell lists for all the 101 spell series and/or some new spells just for said classes.

Maybe a 101 Alchemist spells, 101 Witch spells etc. Combined with adding in some of the spells from these lists and I would be very happy. Hint hint, nudge nudge, wink wink. :)

They will appear in the print compilation.

Right now I just don't have time in the scheudle to do a Web Enhancement (heck I have two web enhancements I have not even released yet because of tight scheduling.)

Reviewed here, on DTRPG and sent to GMS magazine.

About how many sorc spells have the electrical and sonic descriptors in the various levels? Is there a package deal for all ten PDFs?

Thanks!

Don't know and couldn't tell you beyond going threw each book and each spell and while I like you Thorn I don't like you that much. ;p

Now don't quote me but I think they mentioned maybe doing a bundle deal once and or a print deal. But I might just be thinking of something else too.

LOL! Diane loves thunder and lightning spells for her sorceresses, but the price point for all ten PDFs is a little steep.

Thanks DM!

Ok I just looked at the level 1 spells and did a quick search for sonic and electricity and I found 5 sonic and i think 7 electrical ones in that book. To give you a idea. Not sure how many of the sonic ones would fit thunder though.

Cool. That makes it a bit more tempting.

Cubicle 7 is supposed to be printing a 1001 or 1010 Spells later this year, as a compilation of all these 101 spell books for Steve.

What does the fallowing mean exactly?
"If chaotic blast instead has a spell effect, use the
saving throw and duration of that spell."
It doesn't mimic any spells in particular just non-damaging effects.
thanks if anyone can help me with this or point me somewhere to find out more.

That is the only one.

Originally there were more spell effects but the spell evolved during development as we went with conditions. This is my recollection but its been close to a year since I wrote that book :)

Yes there is going to be a print version 1001 Spells and I will do a pdf bundle at that time.
