Love love love this sheet! Have had a couple of small but annoying issues in 2.6.1:

1) sometimes the text doesn't show in the field, the only way to fix this seems to be creating a new sheet (not so bad on a low level character, but a serious pain with CL16... (have seen this in the armor field also on weapons fields, fillable fields, not number fields. Since I print them out, I just hand write in anything that doesn't print, but.. annoying. File does the same thing on 2 different computers.

2) occasionally the money fields randomly give decimal places (like you put in 5 for the cp field and it gives you 4.9999999). GM teases that they're shaved coppers... :)

Don't know if these have been addressed in 2.6.2, but have downloaded it and am xferring over.

Thanks for a great product!

Did you notice an improvement for those issues when you switched to the most recent version, then?

Hi, i just wanted to ask: is this sheet still under development?

If so i would have some suggestions:

- Give a field for negative levels, so you don't have to change basically everything manually -> convenience

- add a section to the weapons fields to incorporate flurry of blows for either unarmed or weapon fields.

- a section to write down spells per day and spells known etc would be nice. currently im using the notes section for that.

Well, I haven't been getting any bug reports that weren't user error in some regard. (I'll admit that my site isn't quite as instructional as it could be, but I like to think you all are a clever lot too)

As for the negative level suggestion: if you treat negative levels as a custom class, you might get what you're after... just put a negative value in that field. Let me know.

Flurry of Blows: not looking to (and I'm sure I've mentioned it previously at some point too) force the sheet into being too bloated with class details. I don't want it to become an issue where one class will have wasted ink/paper for class-specific abilities that belong to someone else and will never be utilized. It's mostly a creative-design choice, same with the spell sheet inclusion (i did attempt to create an entirely separate document for spells, and hated it in PDF form - not the right tool for the job). Remaining class agnostic creates a more universal tool.

Sorry for the delay with this post, by the way. I've finished school, moved 1200 miles, and started working way more than I use to. The only real bug-squashing that's been on my list is mostly just background javascript optimization, though.

I've also got a free form-fillable PDF sheet, which you can download from my website here:

Google up "SSA-X2" as an option. It's quite fantastic.

Sovereign Court

Yea, right now I've got it set up to use a "switch" statement to fish out an exact value for carry capacities. The only problem is that I capped it out at 40 Strength. Anything higher than that and I figure your capacity is fairly irrelevant anyway, LOL!

I have one switch for light/medium/heavy, and it just returns the proper value. Only problem is I have a setup like that now for both ant haul and non-ant haul, since I just added that checkbox to page 3. That's 3 sets of values for 40 different strength scores (240 manually retrieved possible value, that are static).

I'm gonna add this to my to-do list, though, to clean up the code on the "back-end" of the sheet later on, and allow the capacities to scale beyond 40 strength. Thank you for finding this mdt!

Sovereign Court

I just posted the updated v2.6.2 to my site! You can review the adjustments in the change log there. As always, thank you for your feedback and please keep it coming!

Yea, mobile devices tend to not allow for the Javascript in PDFs. That's where all the code is that handles the magic with my character sheet. Your report doesn't surprise me, unfortunately. What I can recommend though, is to maintain your character data in the PDF on a computer using Adobe Reader (or similarly functional PDF reader application that WILL handle the javascript), then "flatten" the results as a non-form PDF. You can accomplish this by using any PDF printer available out on the interweb, really. Then just use that as your sheet at the table. Going that route, which is my preferred method for tablet usage, I'd also recommend something for annotating PDF files.. so you can jot notes on your sheet to reference for when you need to update the form-fillable version of your character.

mdt wrote:
Ant Haul triples your carrying capacity, the table at your link just shows the tripled capacity. People who want to show ant-haul can just put 2 times their str into the str adjustment box to simulate this. Although a checkbox would be easier. :)

That actually helps a lot... I should be able to throw some rather simplified code in there that just references your adjusted str score when calculating loads & lifts.

Since I haven't heard back from the 3.5 guys about whether there's a math formula behind the carry capacity limits, I just have an exhaustive if/else statement to calculate limits. It's basically based on str score + L&L mod you specify in loads & lifts area, then cross references the carry capacity limits table.

Seems all I would have to do is add another logic check to determine where a checkbox for "ant haul" is check... if so: (str score + L&L mod)*3 = str score for carry capacity.

Sovereign Court

Nice presentation, and function! I'm diggin' it so far!

One thing I noticed: Uploading your own image file for the character portrait doesn't put it on the background page when you select that sheet as an option. When I tried it out, it only adds the uploaded image to the inventory sheet.

Sovereign Court

Did the wording for Ant Haul get revised? Wasn't it a +4 or +6 bonus previously, to your strength score when determining carry capacity?

It seems to be static values now, which are all dependent upon your existing strength score. It seems the same, but a +4 or +6 bonus does not provide the same capacity values as what is listed in that table.

I might have to add an "Ant Haul" checkbox to my overhaul of the Load & Lift section.

Sovereign Court

Okay, update time:

Desktop PC is still dead in the water. The repair place is taking their time replacing my motherboard for some reason. Thankfully I had most of the background code finished for the updates, before the thing ate a power surge - so there's not a lot of programming I need to do under the hood at this point.

I tried to get my Adobe CS5.5 license ported from PC to Mac, but since it's not the current version, they told me to bugger off. So, I set up a virtual box on my Mac and installed CS5.5 on there instead. It's slower, and a bit more annoying too, but I managed to get my grubby mitts back into the character sheet!

I've spoken with Sadie, from Dyslexic Studeos, and he's decided to change his fonts to something that's very similar to the current fonts... but more distribution-friendly. Since a lot of my design is influenced by his, and distribution is something I want to continue to do: I'm going to follow suit.

I went into Illustrator today, and changed them around. To make sure nothing wacky is going on, I've passed the update to my beta testers for a look over. Hopefully they won't take too long to get it back to me... I've been sitting on 2.6.2 for WAY longer than I intended.

Oh, You just have to scroll up a bit in the discussion (on this page) for an explanation for why it vanished from my site.

Long story short: PDF is the wrong tool for the job, and I posted a suggestion for a VERY nice tool that does it properly.

Also, an update on progress: I'm going on almost a month and a half without my desktop PC. It has my Adobe software installed on it, and it's at the "doctor's office." I don't want to install the software on a second machine until I find out whether or not that one is repairable. For the time being, I've just got a handful of notes for things that need to be touched up on before I publish another version update.

Helaman wrote:

Yea, there's just the issue remaining of changing a few font sizes for those sections that I had overhauled. I need Illustrator to do that, and it's installed on my desktop... which is still out for repairs.

BTW Will there be a spells known page on your cool character sheet?
I'd love to see the spells known and spell book pages added to this sheet, it would make dealing with magic so much easier...

I tried to whip up a caster sheet as a PDF in the past. It was discussed in this thread even. I wanted something that offers a comparable experience to what the primary character sheet offers, but it just isn't practical within the confines of an interactive PDF form. Primarily this is due to the finite amount of pages for a PDF, with only using free version of Reader and other PDF applications.

For casters who prepare their spells without having to memorize them (clerics, druids, etc), the amount of space needed would be too tremendous in order to record them all. Then there's scaling what's available by caster level too, and adding/removing pages in a PDF is not something that can be done with Reader. You need the paid version (Acrobat) to manipulate those things.

It's great for those who have a limited pool of spells to choose from though, cause it typically can fit into one page of the PDF (bards, wizards, sorcerers, etc). Then again, these types of casters can simply add notes to either the 4th or 5th pages of my current character sheet if they simply want to track only names of spells.

I did find a caster sheet that runs in Excel (should be compatible with OpenOffice.org too), which I really like; it does everything that I wanted my PDF to do too. It's the adVance Spell Sheet, by sCoreForge. You can find a copy of it here or here

1 pretty annoying bug i found, dunno if it was already reported - didn't find it in the thread. If you push Options - open file then all your data is ALREADY lost even if you push cancel. So it seems like a person can fill full charsheet and then trying to save it by mistake click on open instead of save - bam, you got no info now:( Well it may be a feature , not a bag of course:) But it doesn't seem so.

It's suppose to throw an alert and cancel prior to that process, if you're not using Acrobat. I will have to address this for v2.6.2; welcome to the Special Thanks section ;)

Tierre wrote:
Also is there any way to add a custom coin weight to this? I use in my games 300 coins per pound instead of 50 and it is the only thing in the s+&# which seems working not as i would like it to:)

I can add that to my list of things for v2.6.3, or later perhaps, but I'm not sure how much use it will get. I haven't really got it setup for handling houseruled mechanics like that just yet.

Tierre wrote:
Well i can just save it by ctrl-s anyway heh:)

The original intent for the open/save options was to allow users to transfer data from one sheet version to another when it gets updated. Previously I was publishing updates on a rather frequent basis, but it's slowed down quite a bit since 2012 started. Now it just seems like more of a convenience than anything, from my point of view anyway. Plus, I haven't really received any feedback on it either, so it wasn't really addressed until now.

I've looked into the purchase of LiveCycle Reader Extensions (LCRE), but the LiveCycle Server (LCS) application is a bit more expensive than I think is worth for this one file. LCRE are required for Reader clients to have access to the import|export form options. I will look into seeing whether or not I can add the Reader Extensions with the Trial of LCS only once, or if the Reader Extensions need to be added every time I push an update. Currently, I need to strip all of the rights for the document prior to editing the javascript... then add them back prior to publishing. If I need to do that each time, though, the LCRE probably won't be likely to be a feature in this character sheet sadly.

Tierre wrote:
What browsers should be used and were tested for the save function?

Browsers? None, actually. I only have been suggesting use of Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat applications, and that's all that are being tested. Primarily this is due to the Acrobat javascript API for forms; I want to ensure stability where I can, and broadening the testing scope too far makes things increasingly difficult (and redundant) to test. If the sheet is compatible with Adobe Reader and someone opts to use a different PDF viewing application, all I can suggest is that the application is compatible with Reader and supports javascript for the calculations.

Regarding the save & load function, I do have a bit of control added to the sheet for v2.6.2:

patnodewf wrote:

Change-log, from v2.6.1 to v2.6.2:

(done) Added alert for those attempting to save character data with Reader clients. This function is currently not supported for Adobe Reader.

I realize that configuring a MAPI client may not be something that non-corporate email users have setup, and the majority of my user demographic might be more inclined to use web-based email. I am just going to replace the command to launch a new email with the attached file with an alert prompt.

On the topic of v2.6.2:

I had an evil wizard living in the walls of my apartment cast a rather high level (possibly empowered and maximized) lightning bolt recently, targeting a printer that was just installed. Resulting in a fried printer and desktop PC; the wizard has yet to be found and dealt with (I may need to commission adventurers for that, hrm...)

Until my PC is returned to me by the repair technicians who have been charged (pun not intended, heh) with fixing it, I do not have access to Illustrator to make a few final adjustments on some of the font sizes. Also, the extra time without my desktop has given my beta testers a bit more time with v2.6.2 and they've uncovered (during last night's game session actually) a rarely occurring bug with how extradimensional inventory is handled. I've got it nailed down to a few key javascript functions that I wrote very early on in my learning process for all of this. All I have to say is: "egad! those scripts are atrocious" & "yea, you can tell I was quite the amateur when I wrote them."

For the rest of what's planned for v2.6.2, just scroll up in the discussion thread; I've posted a list of changes to be expected. I hope I've answered your questions; if not, then just reply here and let me know.

It's been a busy few weeks, this week especially, at Bad-ass Bandanna Studios. I think I put in about 30 hours from Saturday through Tuesday (yesterday) alone. I've sent my release candidate for v2.6.2 to my beta testers today for review. If I've done my job correctly, I should have an update out sometime in the beginning of October!

Change-log, from v2.6.1 to v2.6.2:

  • (done) Added license & copyrights info, once beta testing is finished, I will need to register with Paizo for Community Use licensing.
  • (done) Added option to fill class skills
  • (done) Added PFS experience option
  • (done) Overhauled loads & lifts section
  • (done) Overhauled speed section
  • (done) Overhauled worn items section
  • (done) Standardized the appearance of checkboxes throughout the sheet
  • (done) Added alert for those attempting to save character data with Reader clients. This function is currently not supported for Adobe Reader.

Sovereign Court

...and, here's a peak of the "Loads & Lifts" section. When it's done, it should update your skills and armor class depending on encumbrance.

Sovereign Court

I'm overhauling the "Speed" section. I'm tired of being vastly underwhelmed by its potential.

Here is a sneak peek of it.

I just need to add the fields for special movement speeds (swim, fly, burrow). I don't think I'm going to have it calculate the number of squares for those movement types anymore though, mostly due to space limitations.

Sovereign Court

I don't much like the Roboto Sans, but do like the Merriweather.

Roboto Sans feels too "scrunched together" and overall, rather tiny for where it's used.

I like the Merriweather though, as it has a similar feel to Chaparral. Is your example bolded, however? Seems like what you're saving for ink from Roboto Sans is lost due to the thinner white font use via Merriweather...

...hope that made sense.

*Takes notes...*

I've been wanting to do some of this for awhile now... especially the list part. Expect changes soon.

One thing I did with the spell database, after saving a *.xls file of it, was the addition of a few columns at the end.

In excel, this translated to "BT" through "CH" added. And I gave each column a header (row 1) with a caster class name. For the second row, I put in a (sort of) simple line of excel code then filled down through row 1573.

Details:
=IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("cleric ",E2)),MID(E2,FIND("cleric ",E2)+7,1),"")

For each column, I just replaced the class name (space included after it) with that for each corresponding column header. That "+7" changes for each column too. It's a character count of "cleric_" in the above example. The longest one was "sorcerer/wizard_" with "+16":

=IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("sorcerer/wizard ",E2)),MID(E2,FIND("sorcerer/wizard ",E2)+16,1),"")

I listed that one the exact same way for both the sorcerer & wizard columns. I couldn't (out of 1572 rows) see if there were any specific sorcerer or wizard only listings in row E.

This allowed me to populate a spellcaster column with a spell level, since each row is dedicated to a spell name.

Now I can use the options in Excel to filter by class, then sort by level. Might be able to do the same thing in Google Docs, and it wouldn't be too much more work to update if more gets added to it in the future. Since you're not changing the structure of column E, you could maintain that for export to other aspects of the site.

It could also lead to easier queries in a caster-sheet situation.

Disabling protected mode on startup, global object security, and enhanced security and closing/reopening the sheet hasn't helped.

I've re-enabled the security features as I'm not comfortable running with them turned off.

This appears to be a mistake on my part. I failed to look into whether or not that function is available to Reader clients. The use of the "exportAsXFDF" method in Adobe's javascript seems to be restricted to Acrobat only.

On Windows, if the client machine with Reader installed has its default mail program configured to be MAPI enabled, you should be prompted to mail yourself a copy of the *.xfdf file though.

In the meantime, I'll look into seeing how affordable it is to procure and enable LiveCycle Reader Extensions in my sheet. That should enable users to save the data directly to their local system.

My apologies, but I'm on it!

As for the topic at hand? I think a magic item creation tool would be a fantastic addition! My group has one specific player who is notorious for stumbling over the rules around magic item pricing, and the process in general. I feel that some sort of web-based form that handles all the rules-based logic over options that are available, even for a class' bonded item, would be invaluable if properly executed.

chopswil wrote:
Can you output the data into a Paizo style stat block or xml or something else?

The option to save your character data will create a *.xfdf file. It's XML data that identifies each field and the data contained within each. I realize this a bit late to mention, since the ability to save your character data has been implemented since January 2012 now (v2.6), but I felt like I should point that out.

Also, the main reason for this post, I've started planning toward this goal so it's a bit more user-friendly. I'm thinking I can add a menu item to the "options" button that prompts the user with a dialog box/window. Within that window, ideally, could reside either a scrolling plain-text area or a static text area; both options having that text be the stat block for their PC. Then a simple "close" button for when you're finished. I haven't decided which, but ideally the user could just highlight and copy|paste to wherever they would need to put the data.

If you're going to copy|paste a stat block somewhere... does the bold font matter or is it just an aesthetic modification?

From my experience, the Javascript in PDF forms never function on iOS. A few apps allow you to see the fields, but the calculations are lost in iOS. Version 2.6.1 is out today!

  • (fixed) DEX not applying to AC properly
  • (fixed) Switch DEX & CON order on page 1
  • (fixed) Dodge bonus no longer applied to Flat-Footed AC
  • (added) Option Button Menu items

To Do:

  • (bug) Loads & Lift values do not prioritize temporary Strength score over normal score when a temporary score is present.
  • (feature) Export a pathfinder stat-block, as an html file

Reminder:
To transition your character data to the updated sheet, use the big red option button to save your character data on your current sheet first. Then open your character data in the updated sheet and save the file.

Note:
Because I fixed a few issues relating to AC, you may want to use the checkbox for your armor not being equipped... and then just make sure you uncheck the box. (click the checkbox, click somewhere else... repeat once more to put your armor back on)

Also, throw my vote in on correcting the ordering of the abilities on the first page.

Ok. I've been playing around with it further and I think I've figured it out. The Dex modifier only shows up under Defenses if a max AC Dex value is inserted under Armor. Hopefully this helps you with fixing it.

Keep up the good work on this excellent character sheet.

It was actually updating the AC total prior to updating the max dex. I re-ordered the process for it though. Whew... took a bit to pin that one down too!

I also switched the DEX & CON placement on page 1, so they're now: STR > DEX > CON... instead of STR > CON > DEX.

These fixes will be included with 2.6.1 when it's ready. I need to fix the addition of dodge bonuses to flat-footed AC too. I also will be adding a dialog window for Natural Armor & Deflection bonuses, so players can track their sources and bonus types like they can with other aspects of the sheet. Not sure why I missed those :(

Sovereign Court

Also, two questions:

1) is it possible to have more than a single favored class?
2) is there a mathematical equation that dictates the load/lift values for medium creatures?

(I currently assign load/lift values based on the table in the book, I would like to trim down some code by using an equation if possible.)

Sovereign Court

A few bugs scurried out of the woodwork on me. The details are posted to my website on my To Do List for those curious. They mainly involve how your dex bonus to AC is calculated under certain circumstances, as well as how temporary strength scores impact loads & lift limits.

There are also suggested temporary fixes which you can use in the meantime. The fixes will be released with version 2.6.1 once I finish arranging the tab order. I might be vulnerable to coercion in regards to releasing them earlier than that. I've got one fixed, and the other shouldn't take much time either.

The tab order is attrocious though, I agree, and it needs to be addressed. I'm sort of using those bug fixes as motivation to finish manually rearranging that. The first page took me nearly three hours of dragging/dropping due to the number of "fields" on it. The inventory page is only going to be worse when I get to it.

I'm also planning on implementing a way to apply and display modifiers that result from the various loads/lift categories, but that could be included with 2.6.2 also.

I just want to refrain from pushing out too many tiny updates too frequently, so you guys don't have to constantly change your character sheets around. On that note though: how are the options to load/save character data working for everyone?

For this reason, I generally treat audits of my players' sheets like a drug test from your employer: it's random.

I do one audit sometime on the day of each session, and it's just a roll of the die to see who gets it. If they fail once, it's a slap on the wrist with a warning to fix something. If they're habitual: I find a creative way to kill their character intentionally.

It might be an evil way to solve an issue, but it gets the point across I think.

My group keeps a shared Dropbox folder for "player information," which includes character sheets.

We also use my form-fillable PDF sheets which do a ton of auto calculation for players.

Between the two, the GM just has to keep an eye on feat-combos, and how their players are interpreting them. I think that's something you're not going to be able to automate though.

freeAgent makes a valid point about Google Sites. They're free and relatively easy to setup. If your players prefer spreadsheet style sheets, you can find a few that are supported by Google Docs. From there, just make the sheets in Google Docs their primary sheets so you can track changes via Google's tools. You can also directly link to the sheets from a Google Site. Add a text document for background info and insert pictures, and you'll have a neat little customized character portfolio on a website for each player too! You could even setup an "adventure journal" for each individual PC as well... if they're into that sort of thing.

I have added a dialog window for itemizing skill ranks for each class in the next update (v2.6.1). That should allow you to designate your additional skill ranks from things such as "Skilled" and "Finding Haleen" each level. I also added a verification for the favored class bonus field values. That way you can't enter more values into the fields than you merit for your favored class levels. I'm also still working on manually arranging the tab orders, that's gonna take me a while though...

I also tried to rethink the whole spellcaster sheet the other night. It basically ended with the necessity to enter an entire spell database into the PDF as several scripts. The intent was to allow either a selection of available spells for your caster class & level (filtered and presented via dropdown box), or to allow you to enter custom text values. Upon choosing a spell, it populates the fields based on the spell database scripts.

Here's the logic I came up with

Once I got to that point it dawned on me that using a spreadsheet is far more efficient. Even as a printed sheet. It handles the overflow for the user better too, by simply adding rows of data. Casters that can draw from their entire list would benefit more too, as a spreadsheet could potentially populate every available spell - not just those prepared.

I've finally got around to registering a domain for my page too...

New site can be found here: http://www.badassbandannastudios.org

The previous site (linked in the original post of this thread) also includes a link, with a reminder to update bookmarks.

Sorry, just coming back to this again, you 'save as' and then use .xfdf right? how does one re-import? Open file as pdf?

Big red "Options" button:

  • Save Character Data... to export to an *.xfdf file.
  • Open Character Data... to import from an *.xfdf file.

Hope that helps.

Oops... turns out that wasn't the sheet I intended to refer people to...

I pulled it out of my personal archives from D&D 3.5 characters and put it in my dropbox public folder for now. You can nab it HERE though.

I also converted it to an *.xlsx file (excel) but haven't tinkered with functionality of it, so this version might be broken: HERE you go.

If anyone wants to convert it over to Pathfinder, I forgot where I found it apparently... so permission cannot come from me to do so. Though, the task does seem quite daunting...

EDIT: Nope, found it. Sent an email to the address listed, inquiring...

Is there a caster PDF out there that you WOULD recommend?

PDF? No, not a form-fillable one. What I use is SpellGen 2.0, with a custom PFSRD resource file. The file I use though, it's mostly configured for my Priest that I played, and it only has the spells that Pathfinder added or changed from D&D 3.5e. It's about as bare-bones as it needs to be in order for me to make my spell list.

What I was trying to do here, was create a form that mimics the output of SpellGen. The only other caster sheet that I've ever enjoyed were those from Ema's. But, because they added actual content that wasn't OGL, a C&D order was given and they're no longer functioning.

If I had to recommend a spreadsheet type of spell sheet, I would go with either this one (requires OpenOffice, which is free) or SpellForge. But those are both, again, mostly D&D3.5e. I'd imagine with a slight bit of tinkering you could re-purpose them for PFRPG though.

Tab ordering.

That's a rather irritatingly slow and tedious work in progress.

Any way to get the stats in standard order?

I've had others request this previously, and have been reluctant to change it. Mostly, my reluctance stems from the source of my influence for the main sheet: sadie's sheets at Dyslexic Studeos.

there are a few things that I have trouble with over your caster sheet

I'm having trouble with ALL of my caster sheet. My goal is|was to consolidate relevant information into a single source, and have that source be a form-fillable PDF. What I've released so far has turned out to be more of a "proof of concept" than what I had initially intended it to be. Everything you have mentioned here, plus the plethora of faults that Yaba mentioned above, are forcing me to seriously consider pulling it from my site. At least until I manage to give it a major design overhaul.

I'm also contemplating scrapping the caster sheet entirely, as I believe there are better tools available which can accomplish the same tasks far more efficiently. As a player, I wouldn't use my own caster sheet in it's current form. And that troubles me more than anything else.

mdt wrote:
NPC forms. Say, 2 per page, just the minimum needed for an NPC

This... this I would be more optimistic about. What I'm currently using, as a GM, is Kyle Olson's Combat Manager to customize NPCs, then I've just been printing them out as PDF files. (there are also free PDF printer|spoolers available if you don't own a copy of acrobat pro)

Character Sheet Version 2.6 is released!

Updated the font colors for loads and lift limits, total inventory weight now updates to match font colors with appropriate weight category to better visualize character encumbrance. Also added option to toggle armor and shield as "unequipped" within the sheet, to prevent deleting values entered.

MAJOR UPDATE: you can now save your form/character data as an exported *.xfdf data file, and also import from those files. This should alleviate some frustration when new sheet updates are released. Also, I changed the huge red "Erase Everything!" button to a more manageable "Options" button. This is where you will find commands to open/save character data. This also allowed me to remove some amount of user error in regards to accidentally erasing the entire sheet. Instead of a single click to delete everything, you now have a few confirmation gateways.

Which version is this you're referring to, 1.0 (portrait layout) or 1.1 (landscape layout)?

Sovereign Court

WOOO!!!

I tell ya what: my brain gets going and it doesn't stop until it wants to! I mostly blame Helaman this time around though, for pointing out the font size issue...

It piqued my curiosity, and my stubborn brain took over from there - LOL!

This is not a bad thing anyway... at least not for you guys! I lost about 13 hours of my day today, hehe. However, I do have an update now for the caster sheet:

Caster Sheet Updates wrote:
Changed the page layout from portrait to landscape. This allowed me to adjust the font sizes across the sheet, however it caused a loss in about 30 spell slots. Now there are a total of 34, down from 65. Added a bit more functionality to it also. You can now keep track of spells remaining of your daily allotment. Also changed the mega-reset-button-of-doom to a much smaller "menu" button. The menu button has an option for you to have your character "rest," which essentially resets all of the checkboxes for "used" and "prepared" spell slots. The menu also has a slightly less easy to press "reset sheet" command. I added a notes section to the top also, to keep track of various things like Spell Focus and whatnot.

Check it out, let me know what you think!

Visit my site here to download it!

Also, mdt: I wound up tweaking the tab orders just a bit, tried to get Acrobat to do it for me.. it's more organized, but not perfect. It'll show up with v2.5.05, I'm just waiting for more things to creep up before releasing that one. I did manage to have someone find a bug with the temporary ability scores too. Currently, if you specify a temporary score... then go to delete it, the temporary modifier (which is -5 for zero) manages to still apply to various things across the sheet. To get around it for now just change the temp score to match your actual score. But that fix is in 2.5.05 as well.

Can I suggest less lines per page? We can always use multiple sheets but the writing is small on this sheet (10pt?).... if we need to type a lot of text in then the font size will shrink.

I could do a larger font size, but that also means that not only the height of each field is increased... but also the characters are wider, so the width of each field would have to increase.

The way I have it set now, there are 65 spell slots and the displayed font size is 6pt. While it is small on paper once you print it out, it's still legible. If I change the sheet to accommodate 12pt font size, then I will need to rotate the layout to landscape. The added width from the fields will require the changed layout to maintain the same fields per row; I'd rather not stack fields on top of each other just to add more space for a description & name fields.

If it's changed to landscape, the number of spell slots will dramatically decrease as well. I'd estimate approximate one third of what is there now would be available in a landscape layout. For those not printing it, they can always just zoom in with Adobe Reader to adjust the viewed size as well.

A few things I did notice that need to be updated already though include:

  • The checkbox for cantrips/orisons label needs to be darkened. After printing, it's not dark enough to really see... nonetheless be legible.
  • Duration, Area & Distance popup windows need a custom entry field.
  • Duration popup window is going to get rearranged a bit. I'm not happy with its appearance/layout.

I'm hoping to post an update to this spell sheet before the New Year. My main concern was initially to get the mechanics of the scripting to work before publicizing the sheet, as a sort of "proof of concept." Now that that's out of the way, adjustments can be made and tweaking can be done!

Thank you, I'm glad that gamers other than myself find these things helpful! I spent too long waiting for "someone else" to make these things, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I'm just glad that I wasn't the only one out there that wanted things done this way!
