You can download the PDF from my site here.

This sheet is meant to be filled out on a computer. From there, you can either use it at the table directly from a computer or you can print your data and bring that to the table instead. I suggest using Adobe Reader 7.0 or later to view or maintain the data within this sheet, you can save your character data between sessions as well. If you're not interested in using your computer to maintain your character sheet, and prefer the paper and pencil method, I recommend the Dyslexic Studeos sheets (linked below).

I've spent a good six, maybe more, months learning and working on the scripting for this sheet. My current group hasn't had any reason to avoid using it. They also seem to have found the majority of the bugs related to it thus far, so I'm comfortable releasing the document to the general public at this point.

In the past, our group had primarily used the SSA-X2 sheets for D&D 3.5 edition, and we all wanted something similar for Pathfinder. Since Shawn S. Altorio of SSA-X2 shut down his project a while ago, I was forced to start coding from the ground up. When I started, my knowledge of object oriented programming was quite limited, and I was only starting to be exposed to C#. PDF forms rely on Javascript, which isn't too different. Over time though, the sheet grew into what is presented to you now. The appearance and layout of the sheet didn't quite work well, as it was designed for D&D 3.5 edition. To address the appearance issues, I used the character sheets by Dyslexic Studeos as my primary inspiration.

A huge thanks goes out from me to both Shawn and Dyslexic Studeos. Without them, this project may have never been accomplished.

THIS ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!

I like it a lot - especially the way you can modify your stats and label this with different fields built into the stat.

Thank you, I'm glad someone out there is enjoying it!

I feel that I need to explain the "bags" area (page 3, very bottom right corner) just a slight bit though. There's a column labeled "EX?" that allows you to flag a check mark on|off. It's essentially asking you if that bag is for extradimensional storage. Check it for yes, blank for no.

This allows you to not have to worry about micro-managing the weight of items in your inventory. Instead, you simply enter the weight and quantities for individual items as normal, in the inventory section (page 3, top left) and select a bag number to store it in. When you flag the container for extradimensional, it calculates the volume for the bag but doesn't add that volume to your character's overall encumbrance total. Also, you can use whatever units for weight and/or volume you would prefer.

I'll add that to the FAQ section of my site at some point though. Enjoy the sheet for now... and tell your friends it's out there for use!

Very nice!!

Are there plans to add in the Magus as character class choice?

Can you output the data into a Paizo style stat block or xml or something else?

The drop-down menu for classes are just the classes from Core and APG, they don't do anything in terms of function. They're in place for convenience, and you can simply replace the text with your own. This not only allows for the sheet to adapt to future released content, but also restricts constraints on how you're able to build your characters. One of my initial thoughts was to add events that fill out your class skills, special abilities, BAB based on level, and base saves.

After further consideration, I decided to just leave the list of class names in there without any form events associated with them. I don't want the sheet to limit options for your characters you can build.

As a side note, Dyslexic Studeos has plenty of character specific sheets available. I had considered making form fill-able versions of those, but I would rather not detract from anything they offer... or their site entirely. I have, however, contacted a representative for them and offered my services should they wish to pursue a larger collaborative project to offer form fill-able sheets as well.

I suppose the data should all be there to accomplish this, but it hasn't been anything I'd thought to do with it yet. What type of purpose would you have in mind for such a thing, a printable handout or text to copy/paste to somewhere else?

May as well add in the Magus and any others you didnt have lest you confuse the unitiated or give the sheet an "unfinished" feel.

hrm... I'll have to look into that.

Not sure off the top of my head how to pull that off as an optional feature. Primary concern would be to not add so much to the sheet that it causes a distraction from its primary purpose.

Yeah! Thats just really cool and great work!
About what i dreamed of actually.

I have some suggestions though:
1. Could you please add more classes, like ninja etc?
(In case, personally i prefer ninja first ;) )
2. There are some character sheets that offer a class special abilities page. Something very nice to have too. If you can make it show up on class selection, would be awesome.
3. Having some option that automatically work feats and items boni into the stat blocks, more awesome.
4. Having a field in the abilities where you have itemboni and normal scores then adding up to a total score, great help in many situations.

Anyway you won a fan. I wanted to do something like that and above are my ideas to add. Only i can´t script or program something like that either and won´t find the time in the next year to learn it.

Awesome work!

Yes, I have a few suggestions too!

1) I like the idea of a class special abilities page.
2) I'd love it if the CMD section accounted for Defensive Training.
3) The biggest one for me: larger inventory sheet. Perhaps a full page. My players' PCs carry a lot of stuff and I like to break it out by category for ease of use.

Oops... you're right! When I updated 2.5 to 2.5.01 I added in Magus & Gunslinger and seem to have forgotten to include Ninja & Samurai. Slightly embarrassing, but I'll get 'em in there. In the meantime, you can simply replace the text in those fields manually with anything you'd like.

Hayato Ken wrote:

I considered this, but with all the feat options available it would make the PDF file size immense due to all the javascript required. The amount I have in there at the moment is already keeping it a hefty size.

Hayato Ken wrote:

The sheet is designed to accommodate for six custom bonus types within each ability score. When you select the field for an ability score, you should be seeing a javascript popup window. The fields on the left allow you to enter any label you would need, the text isn't used anywhere in the sheet except in that specific field as a reference for yourself. Then the column on the right is for numerical values which are all added together for your displayed ability score total.

I've used the same popup mechanic all over the sheet, specifically to handle custom bonuses.

Hayato Ken wrote:

Thank you! And thank you to everyone else who's commented here! I also grew tired of waiting for someone else to make this for Pathfinder, and wound up being bored one day back in November of 2010. After keeping at it, and continuously learning javascript, this sheet emerged :)

Since attacks, AC, init, and so are pretty common why are they not on the front sheet? In short could some things be done to take up less space? I have no skill in this area so this is just a question.

The idea was to retain the layout in a fashion that segregates your data as follows:

  • Page 1: Character
  • Page 2: Combat
  • Page 3: Inventory
  • Extras for notes.

This way, you're more likely to quickly locate the necessary information as it comes up. You can also just simply keep one sheet on top, for whichever situation you find your character in. At least, that's how I interpreted the design logic from the Dyslexic Studeos pencil/paper versions. I just adapted some elements from the SSA-X2 sheet that seemed more appropriate for a form fill-able version, and placed them in the corresponding pages to retain that logic.

(I hope that answers your question, LOL)

Human doesn't seem to provide the extra skill rank (or rather doesnt take it into account)

Trying to designate bags says that I've exceeded volume no matter what. I can tick the box but its wierd.

I think a page more that includes Animal Companion/Familar notes/stats AND Player History.

I know I can put it on page 5 but moving pg 5 to 6 and inserting the above would be cool

Knowledge Local should be hard wired in like the other knowledge skills

In the short amount of time I used the sheet, I noticed two things that I don't think anyone has mentioned yet. Maybe I'm just dumb, though.

1) When I was filling out the classes for an Eldritch Knight, I noticed that there are no prestige classes. I know you said I could put anything there and edit it, but that doesn't seem to be working for me. Am I missing something?

2) When I was filling out the ability scores, I assumed the modifiers would appear on their own. When they didn't, I tried to fill them in myself, but the spaces don't seem to be editable. Am I missing something here as well?

Other than that, this is a really nice layout. Very organized and easy to read. I'll definitely be using this is in the future. =)

They do... click on the space. A chart will open. Use the Value area to put in the attribute... rest will auto populate.

The more I use this sheet the more I am impressed big time by its usage.

Clicking the space does nothing for me. Maybe it's the program I'm using. Does this thing not like Macs?

Saved to your desktop first? It does NOT work so well if operating from the website itself.

Not an xpt on PC/Mac but I assume Adobe should work the same no matter what.

Note - CMB is on the sheet but easily missed - I think it should be bigger and/or bolded.

I understand space is a priority but I also think Spellcraft should appear as a hardcoded skill too... then again players milage may vary there.

I don't have a Mac to test it on, unfortunately. I haven't bothered to purchase a copy of Lion to load into my virtual box yet.

Helaman wrote:

This is the assumption that I was running with. The sheet relies on "events" within Acrobat. "On Focus" (mouse pointer entering a field) triggers the javascript popup window, and "On Blur" (mouse pointer leaving a field) runs an update to recalculate relevant fields throughout the sheet.

Helaman wrote:

You can simply increase the value for the skill ranks field by +1. That's how my group was addressing it, seemed to make sense to us. There are alternate racial trait options for human that could replace "Skilled" so I intentionally avoided making it permanent.

Helaman wrote:

Did you enter a value for the bag's volume? If the field is blank, it is seen as "NULL" and javascript treats it as "zero" for its value. Which means if you don't enter a volume capacity, you get the error.

Helaman wrote:

Those, plus some sort of spell list, are definitely another evolutionary phase that this sheet could take. I'll admit that. I just am unsure how to implement them at the moment. They are definitely something that I've been considering though. However, what I would like to do is have some sort of menu option built into the sheet that doesn't rely on Acrobat to function. The menu option being something that allows the user to display only certain pages of the PDF. Not every character is going to be a spellcaster with an animal companion and a mount that needs 2 pages of notes. An option to hide those additional pages is what I'm hoping to provide.

Helaman wrote:

It's in there, smack-dab between Sleight of Hand and Stealth.

Helaman wrote:

Bolding the label should be easy enough to do. Aesthetically though, where it is now seems like the logical place: Right at the top of the attacks section.

The sheet is proving to be very unstable. Some characters I am able to make changes to and save, others I must save as a different version name or the sheet with crash - others cant be edited and saved at all but instead crash.

I think I found the problem with editing. Make a minor change then save. From that point save by clicking the disc icon as you make each set of changes in turn. Large scale changes made all at once is more likely to result in the sheet locking up during saving.

Still a good sheet however and definetely worth using.

Sovereign Court

Helaman wrote:

Large Scale.. as in: the amount of data entered between saves?

Helaman wrote:

The behavior reminds me to something similar to a system memory issue. It sounds like you're running short on temporary memory (ram) when you're updating a lot of data between saves. Once you're saving it to your hard drive, you're committing that data to a physical storage location (hdd) and freeing up that previously utilized ram for further sheet calculations.

I'm running an i7 cpu with 8gb of ram, one of the guys in our group uses a netbook at the table weekly w/this sheet and he's running a celeron with about 1gb of ram, significantly less resources. We've both built higher level replacement characters on the sheet upwards of level 12+ with full gear/inventory/notes. The only time the sheet has ever taken its sweet time to run a calculation was when I initially tried to update every single skill total at the same time. That was a bad idea. Since discovering that, I had to change my logic for updating calculations across the sheet. Now it only updates fields that are directly related to whichever field you enter data into... rather than a blanket refresh of all of them.

I'd like to hear more about what you're doing to make Reader stop responding. Especially if you're able to replicate it consistently. From the surface, perhaps the use of variables within the javascript is causing the sheet to chew up too many resources. Food for thought though, thank you for the feedback!

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

Another note:

The ability scores aren't in the usual order. It should be Str - Dex - Con, not Str - Con - Dex.

Grand Lodge

Seems you are right - it was a RAM issue.

Not so worried about the order of stats.

Sovereign Court

Posted an update, this brings it to 2.5.03

Change Log:
"C.M.B." label has been bolded to be more easily recognizable. A bug was discovered, and a solution submitted, by Kurt Fitzner that addresses the way in which item and coin weight was handled for extradimensional storage containers/bags. Previously users were only able to appropriately account for volume stored in an extradimensional container if it was Bag #1, now all six containers/bags should function properly.

Grand Lodge

Try equipment slot 2 wieght calcs in bags and containers

I used Backpack as slot 1 - its doing wieght fine

I used pouch as slot 2 and put items = 1lb in it. Its showing wieght as 0.000001 lb

Edit: Fixed by putting all the 0 wieght items assigned values for qty.

I really like this character sheet, despite the file size. The way it's organized is easier to use than the standard layout, and I'm a fan of the multiple inputs option.

I did notice that, once the temp box is filled for an ability score, it supercedes the general score box, even if you clear all values for the temp score (which sets the score to zero). Temporary ability scores need a CLEAR option, or need to act as adjustments to the permanent score (so a default value of zero is okay). Or just don't use them on the fillable copy; any temp modifiers can fit in the permanent ability score multi-entry pop boxes.

Personally I think a separate spell sheet with the same mechanics would be nice. That way if you need multiple sheets for your list of known spells, it doesn't mess with the main character sheet. Here is what I would recommend.

The top of the sheet should have:

  • Spontaneous Caster check box
  • Caster Level (number)
  • Casting Ability Score Value (pop box)
  • Spells Per Day (L1-L9) (pop box, highlight red if exceeded by the total spells prepared or total spells cast in the lower section)
  • Prepared / Cast (L1-L9) (number)
  • Spells Known / Learned (L0-L9) (pop box, highlight red if exceeded by the total in the lower section)
  • Save DC (L0-L9) (calculated)
  • Short / Medium / Long range (calculated)
  • Conditional Modifiers (text)
Pop boxes in the top section can work the same way as the ability score inputs from the main sheet. Perhaps the bonus spells per day can be automatically calculated from the casting ability score value. I considered having the sheet calculate the prepared/cast number, but this would make metamagic feats awkward to apply.

For the spell list section, here are the columns I would recommend:

  • Prepared (number)
  • Cast (number)
  • Spell Name
  • Spell Level (number, or pull down with "N/A" default)
  • Area or Targets (pop box)
  • Range (pull down): self / touch / short / med / long / other
  • Components (pop box)
  • Duration (pop box)
  • Save Type (drop menu): FORT / REF / WILL / NONE
  • Spell Resistance (check box)
  • Notes or Book/Page Reference

For the area / targets pop box:

  • Target or Area Type (short text)
  • Fixed Base Value (number, default zero)
  • Value Per # Levels (two numbers, first default zero, second default one)
In the main window for area/targets, display the text after the numeric value.

For the components pop box:

  • Verbal (check box)
  • Somatic (check box)
  • Material (check box and value number box with zero default)
  • Focus (check box and text descriptor box)

For the duration pop box:

  • Base Value (number)
  • Duration Type (pull down): rounds / minutes / hours / days
  • Per Level (check box)

Grand Lodge

Those are great ideas. I am using the 3 columns notes sheet at the moment for the above on spells. It wouldn't be bad to see your ideas (at least in part) added.

A quick revision to my earlier suggestion: the duration pop box would need check boxes for "Permanent" and "Instant" that would override the other duration values. (Instant should override Permanent, just as a precaution.)

Tarondor wrote:
3) The biggest one for me: larger inventory sheet. Perhaps a full page. My players' PCs carry a lot of stuff and I like to break it out by category for ease of use.

I think an auxiliary inventory page is a decent idea. Just take the general inventory column from the current inventory page and repeat it three times, adding the tallies to those on the current inventory page. Once groups get their hands on extra-dimensional storage, they do tend to accumulate a lot of random nicknacks. Since the inventory is the last page before notes, an extra inventory sheet shouldn't get in anyone's way.

If file size is a concern, there's always the option of making a stand-alone inventory page. Players could then manually add entries into the existing inventory page where they type the summary from the auxiliary page. (Qty = 1, weight from page summary, description = "Aux Inventory #X", and give it a bag number as applicable.) The auxiliary page would need to calculate a weight summary for each bag, and one for out-of-bag items (just like the current inventory page). It would also need a text box at/across the top where the player can identify the page.

For groups that aren't bursting with magic bags, a pack animal or wagon should also function the same as an extra-dimensional storage space on the inventory sheet. This is also a decent excuse for a stand-alone inventory page; vehicle storage could be shared between party members. One nice thing about independent form filled auxiliary pages is that they can be used in conjunction with any character sheet. Another excuse for a separate inventory sheet is that it saves work if someone steals your bag/mount/etc.

Sovereign Court

Auxiliary pages would be more ideal than adding them to the current file. The current generic character/core sheet doesn't have them yet because I wanted a way to "hide" the pages within the PDF itself. So if you're a caster, you can toggle the display of a spell sheet with your save DCs and spells/day, etc...

The same idea for the additional inventory page. Hide it if it's not applicable to your character.

<deep breath>

However: Acrobat, which I used to create this PDF with, will only support the function to hide a page within the PDF if the user is viewing the file with Adobe Acrobat... not Reader. Since I want the sheet to maintain the same functionality for all users, this is is not going to happen this way. Alternatively, I could convert the entire PDF to Adobe LiveCycle to add the functionality for those who only have Adobe Reader or other free PDF viewing software. Doing this though would result in changes to every single form object/field in the document. Since there are about twice as many of those that are hidden, more so on the inventory list, than I have visible to users.. the workload would be similar to just starting over from scratch.

So... Auxiliary pages/sheets would seem like a logical endeavor indeed. I do like the idea of incorporating individual dialogue boxes for the various spell details though. Mostly, like with the bonuses dialogue boxes currently used, because I only have to script the dialogue box once and then invoke it whenever the user requires it.

patnodewf wrote:

Glad I could help!

Hopefully you'll be able to fit all the columns for the spell sheet. If it's too crowded, you may need to use a landscape layout. I managed to fit everything on a portrait layout, but I had to make the text pretty small.

Part of me wants to wait in giddy anticipation, but I know these things take time to create.

patnodewf wrote:

In that case, anywhere I suggested a pull-down menu, replace it with a dialogue box (pop box) containing radio button toggles. The saving throw dialogue box could have both FORT/REF/WILL/NONE and NEGATE/HALF/PARTIAL toggles, while the OTHER option on range could tie to a small text box where the user supplies their own entry.

Will entries based on dialogue boxes recalculate if an input from a different (specific) box changes? If so, hopefully it wouldn't crash the sheet. That's the reason I suggested caster level in the top section; all the durations and area/targets could show a fixed number based on the caster's current level and the contents of the dialogue. (Caster level is also needed to calculate the short/medium/long ranges, and possibly bonus spells.)

And I just realized that the area/targets would need to allow for the following scenario: N + Q per level above P, maximum X. (Example: Scorching Ray)

Have you ever used SpellGen? It has an option to input custom spells, and does a good job at translating spell functions into mathematical formulas that you choose for your spell details. Recycling the math behind the spells is the route I initially though of when you suggested it. Just add examples next to the formulas for users to choose which applies.

Currently, we're just using SpellGen for a character spell sheet and manually adding Pathfinder specific spells as we need them.

Yaba wrote:

Between school, GMing ...and now Skyrim (guilty pleasures, etc), I'm going to have to either whittle away slowly or spend one caffeine-infused weekend hammering out code. Before I can do that, I need to bust out Adobe Illustrator first though and design a page layout. I'm definitely going to add the typical "spells per day" and "spell DC by level" area toward the top though, for easy reference since it's not included in the current core sheet.

Sovereign Court

Updated to v2.5.04:

Changed the previously solitary weapon damage field into two separate fields. One for weapon damage, and another for weapon damage bonus. The weapon damage bonus field now utilizes the dialogue pop-up window for bonuses that is already used throughout the sheet. This should be more helpful for those fighter types that go deep into specialization feats.

There is no dire urgency to replace your current character sheet unless you want to. There were no bug fixes included with this update, only added features.

Yaba wrote:

I got around to tinkering with the scripting for this project yesterday, and a bit this morning.

A few examples of formulas I had intended on using are:

  • casterlevel + " rd"
  • casterlevel + " rd (d)"
  • "(c) upto " + casterlevel + " rd"
  • casterlevel + " min"
  • "(c) upto " + casterlevel * 10 + " min"

(c) = concentration
(d) = dismissable

However... with the formulas being internal to the popup window scripting, any external variables are only referenced when the popup window is instantiated.

What that means is whenever someone goes and updates the field for "casterlevel" on the top of the sheet, all of the other fields that rely on a popup window refuse to update. What the user would have to do is click on each individual field to instantiate the popup dialog, then click the "Save and Close" button. Thankfully I do have them setup so far to remember the values previously chosen, should you need to (or accidentally) click the field a second or more times.

If it were me using a spell sheet under these circumstances, I would just whip up an excel spreadsheet instead.

I'm not sure, at the moment, how to "force" an update across the entire sheet. I'll have to brainstorm a bit, but the displayed values (output resulting from clicking "save and close") are just text strings that are not dependent on any formulas outside of that instance of the popup window.

Just got it - thanks!

Can I suggest less lines per page? We can always use multiple sheets but the writing is small on this sheet (10pt?).... if we need to type a lot of text in then the font size will shrink.

Less lines would allow for higher lines and 12pt font - which will also be easier to read.

Wow, Pat. These are both amazing!

The spell caster sheet is fantastic! This will make keeping track of spells for the 2 young'ens in my group extremely easy!

Thanks so much!

Amazing work!

Can I suggest less lines per page? We can always use multiple sheets but the writing is small on this sheet (10pt?).... if we need to type a lot of text in then the font size will shrink.

I could do a larger font size, but that also means that not only the height of each field is increased... but also the characters are wider, so the width of each field would have to increase.

The way I have it set now, there are 65 spell slots and the displayed font size is 6pt. While it is small on paper once you print it out, it's still legible. If I change the sheet to accommodate 12pt font size, then I will need to rotate the layout to landscape. The added width from the fields will require the changed layout to maintain the same fields per row; I'd rather not stack fields on top of each other just to add more space for a description & name fields.

If it's changed to landscape, the number of spell slots will dramatically decrease as well. I'd estimate approximate one third of what is there now would be available in a landscape layout. For those not printing it, they can always just zoom in with Adobe Reader to adjust the viewed size as well.

A few things I did notice that need to be updated already though include:

  • The checkbox for cantrips/orisons label needs to be darkened. After printing, it's not dark enough to really see... nonetheless be legible.
  • Duration, Area & Distance popup windows need a custom entry field.
  • Duration popup window is going to get rearranged a bit. I'm not happy with its appearance/layout.

I'm hoping to post an update to this spell sheet before the New Year. My main concern was initially to get the mechanics of the scripting to work before publicizing the sheet, as a sort of "proof of concept." Now that that's out of the way, adjustments can be made and tweaking can be done!

Wow, Pat. These are both amazing!

Thank you, I'm glad that gamers other than myself find these things helpful! I spent too long waiting for "someone else" to make these things, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I'm just glad that I wasn't the only one out there that wanted things done this way!

The Exchange

Love the sheet! Thank you!

Just a couple of notes...

Really like the sheet, I think I am going to switch to using these in my games and for my characters.

1) The stats are out of normal order. This was mentioned above, but not addressed. It's always a bit of a throw off when you go STR, CON, DEX instead of STR, DEX, CON.

2) The tab order is attrocious. I'm sure it's just not something you thought about, but a lot of people use tabs to go quickly from one field to another. But currently, hitting tab could take you half the sheet away, or half back, instead of to the next field. I'm sure it would be a pain in the butt, but it would REALLY increase the usability if the tabs flowed naturally (top to bottom, left to right) rather than jumping all over the place.

Sovereign Court

WOOO!!!

I tell ya what: my brain gets going and it doesn't stop until it wants to! I mostly blame Helaman this time around though, for pointing out the font size issue...

It piqued my curiosity, and my stubborn brain took over from there - LOL!

This is not a bad thing anyway... at least not for you guys! I lost about 13 hours of my day today, hehe. However, I do have an update now for the caster sheet:

Caster Sheet Updates wrote:
Changed the page layout from portrait to landscape. This allowed me to adjust the font sizes across the sheet, however it caused a loss in about 30 spell slots. Now there are a total of 34, down from 65. Added a bit more functionality to it also. You can now keep track of spells remaining of your daily allotment. Also changed the mega-reset-button-of-doom to a much smaller "menu" button. The menu button has an option for you to have your character "rest," which essentially resets all of the checkboxes for "used" and "prepared" spell slots. The menu also has a slightly less easy to press "reset sheet" command. I added a notes section to the top also, to keep track of various things like Spell Focus and whatnot.

Check it out, let me know what you think!

Also, mdt: I wound up tweaking the tab orders just a bit, tried to get Acrobat to do it for me.. it's more organized, but not perfect. It'll show up with v2.5.05, I'm just waiting for more things to creep up before releasing that one. I did manage to have someone find a bug with the temporary ability scores too. Currently, if you specify a temporary score... then go to delete it, the temporary modifier (which is -5 for zero) manages to still apply to various things across the sheet. To get around it for now just change the temp score to match your actual score. But that fix is in 2.5.05 as well.
