About Zoë Saugin
Zoë Saugin is an Ulfen girl with milky white skin, green eyes and long, bright red hair. She was born in Losthome, in the Land of the Linnorm Kings, near the eastern border with Irrisen. Like everyone born there, she grew up hearing horror stories of the winter witches of Irrisen, their chicken legged shacks that wander the country side, and their living dolls that take children away, never to be seen again.
Exceptionally smart, but not as strong as her peers, young Zoë decided from a very young age that she wanted to learn about magic, to help keep her kingdom safe from those evil witches. With her brains, even the leaders in Losthome thought she'd be a good candidate to become a wizard, and she was given books to help her prepare until she was old enough for a real apprenticeship. While she still had chores to help on her family's farm, much of her childhood was spent with her nose in those books. She was determined to learn as much as she could about magic, particularly that of the winter witches she might some day face.
By the age of 12, the young girl had already been reading about magic for years, but all of her attempts to invoke those magic spells herself had failed. She was beginning to worry that she might never develop any magical power of her own.
Soon after those thoughts began to plague her, she was approached on her farm by a small rabbit, with hair as bright red as her own. In those northern lands, most wild hares have white hair to blend with the ice and snow, so a rabbit of this type is extremely rare. Zoë was intrigued, and attempted to approach the creature. Oddly, the rabbit ran up and cuddled with her immediately, and an instant bond was formed. Zoë named the rabbit Aleph, and soon realized that she had gained the magical power she sought through her new familiar.
While she was ecstatic to have this arcane power, and adored her new furry friend, she was terrified by the realization that she had become the one thing she and her people feared and hated most - a witch! She knew she could never reveal the nature of the arcane power she wielded to her friends and family.
She didn't want to leave, but she was smart enough to know her dark secret would be revealed if she tried to continue her education in Losthome, apprenticing with a real wizard. So she convinced her family that opportunities to learn from different wizards far from home would be more beneficial, and they agreed to send her south to a school in Varisia. But instead of going to that school for potential wizards, she traveled even farther from home, taking nearly a year of selling her magical services aboard ships to eventually arrive in Absalom. From what she'd heard of the huge, cosmopolitan city, she knew she could find someone to teach her about witchcraft, without word getting back to her homeland.
Her magical power at such a young age did in fact attract the type of attention she was looking for. The Pathfinder Society's Master of Spells, Aram Zey, thought she had the potential to be an excellent Pathfinder, if she kept up with her studies. So the young witch enlisted, and spent 3 years as a recruit in the Grand Lodge of Absalom before graduating to full field agent at 16 years old.
While there, she met Paracountess Zarta Dralneen, whose associations with devils made Zoë uncomfortable. But the young girl was tempted by the possibility of learning magical secrets, and eventually decided to join the Dark Archive, and work for the paracountess despite her misgivings.
