About Zájarthauk

Zájarthauk (Half-Orc Sorcerer)
Zájarthauk is a former Half-Orc slave from Belkzen. He came upon his arcane talents by a stroke of luck. Good or bad luck, it is hard to say. He left Belkzen with his Human mentor not long after setting his former owner (who was also his father) alight.

Early Life of Zájarthauk:
Zájarthauk is the youngest son of Ghat, an Orc warrior from Blisterwell in Belkzen, and Radurag, Ghat's Half-Orc concubine slave. His Orc features are more pronounced than most Half-Orcs. He was often beaten by his father and older Orc siblings for being the runt of the litter. He and Radurag had to spend most of their time in the squalid darkness of the tunnels under Blisterwell looking for ancient Dwarven trinkets to sell in Urgir.

On one trip to Urgir to sell such trinkets, Ghat was in one of his usual drunken stupors and started beating Radurag. Again. Inexplicably, Zájarthauk tried to defend his mother this once. Ghat left Zájarthauk dying at the roadside several hours' walk from Urgir. He then sold Radurag at a slave market in Urgir, glad to be rid of both his annoying concubine and her puny son.

Zájarthauk was soon back in the land of the living, however. He was found by Strish; a human sorcerer travelling to Urgir on business of his own. Strish used a salve he recently found, having nothing else on hand to try. The salve did work. In a bizarre way.

Zájarthauk looked like solid cold flame several seconds. But was actually lost in a dream world outside time. It could have been for moments. Or centuries. But the experience was real and tangible. He was surrounded by a blazing red mist that felt oddly pleasant. He perceived the shade of an ancient red dragon, Hraedlilth, through the mist. Her voice was clear; yet both distant and near. Hraedlilth was was dead so long that none know her name. Somehow her blood was mixed in the salve that had just been applied to his wounds. Zájarthauk did not know if he should be afraid or not. He told Hraedlilth everything he remembered, experienced, and knew.

Hraedlilth was amused by the recent misfortunes of Zájarthauk, saying it was the most entertainment she had for centuries. With a chuckle, Hraedlilth told Zájarthauk that he could now cause his own mischief in the world. At that moment his dream ended. He found himself standing in bewilderment. But more robust than he had ever been. In front of a curious old human sorcerer named Strish, who promptly took on Zájarthauk as an apprentice. Zájarthauk was suddenly fluent in the Draconic language thanks to Hraedlilth.

Strish stayed in Urgir for several months, doing esoteric research. Zájarthauk was only too glad to help and learn from his new mentor, and first true friend. It was the first time he had been treated as something other than a whipping post.

One day, though, Zájarthauk spotted his father, Ghat, in Urgir. His father was passed out in a deserted alley in one of his usual drunken stupors. Zájarthauk soon bound and gagged Ghat and beat him mercilessly with the same manacles that Strish found him wearing. Just for good measure, Zájarthauk set his father alight and left him for dead.

Amazingly, Ghat survived. Although a hopeless drunkard, he was astoundingly tough. Even by Orc standards! He still joined the raid into Lastwall. It later took several exceptional hardened Humans and Dwarves to finally kill him in a pitched battle. Some of that peter-natural ferocity is also in the veins of Zájarthauk.

Zájarthauk and Strish parted on good terms a few months later. Strish, who was starting to feel old age creeping up on him, was only interested in esoteric research. But the young and restless Zájarthauk wanted travel and adventure.

Despite everything, Zájarthauk is not full of rage and anger. He believes Luck and Fate are the same thing. He has talent with both combat and fire magics. He even talks with Hraedlilth from time to time. When he speaks with her, Zájarthauk's eyes briefly appear to be tiny orbs of orange fire. These 'chats' with Hraedlilth are outside of time, in that fiery comforting red mist. So, while it seems to last moments, to Zájarthauk they can last for hours, even days.

Personality:
Zájarthauk is oddly stoic, despite his brutal upbringing. He is an intensely loyal friend to those he does befriend.

Motivation:
Zájarthauk has no grand ambitions. Yet. He is just happy to be out of Belkzen and wants to experience the world without living under the thumb of a tyrannical master.
