I thought that this was a great back story for our new player (Rogue/GhostWalker). He calls himself Hunter and is a third son of a minor WaterDeep noble. He's been a bounty hunter his life and was recently hired by a woman named "Mother M" to "take care of" a problem by the name of Loris Raknian. He failed and had to Shadow Walk to escape. On the plane of Shadow he encountered the PC's as they were Shadow Walking to get to the Isle of Tilagos. A brief conversation ensues..... Much better than finding someone in a dungeon and they then join the group. Gives him motivation to hate Loris as much as the PC's. Loris has since fled to Cormyr (FR Setting) and the PC's are planning on tracking him down. Hooray for side quests.
Ok so the fighter and cleric of Kelemvor (FR setting) go to sinners Sanctum to check it out. Furpotia is bluffed that the cleric is there to tend to the dead. They find the secret door and kill the Hangman golem by themselves. So they decide to continue down the well and encounter the OverGod. Here is a blow by blow of what happend. OverGod wins initiative, moves up and beats the fighter unconcious.(I am using a critical hit chart from Combat and Tactics). The cleric steps out of the threatend range and casts Destruction on the OverGod. Beats the SR and then the OverGod fails its save. No more OverGod. Two PC's kill the CR 17 Demon in one round. Anti-Climactic doesn't even begin to describe how the encounter was. Currently the group is in the maze on Tilagos Island trying to find the person who keeps sniping at them during fights. They already have the Crystals but want to be sure that they won't be harrassed anymore.
Two guys are down in Key West for Spring Break. They swing into the "Pirate Bar" to see what it is all about and to get drunk. Inside everyone is dressed like pirates. The Bartender, the band, the people, everyone. Taking seats at the bar they order the first round. The man next to them has a peg leg, eye patch, hook hand and a parrot on his shoulder. The works. After a few drinks one of the guys asks him if he is a real pirate. "Sure I be." he replies "Been raiding setlements along these waters fer most a me years." He proceeds to tell them about life on the high seas. Amazed and slightly drunk by now the two decide to ask about his injuries. "So how did you lose the leg?" "Twas a shark what bit it off near ten year ago." "How about the hand?" "Were a sword fight and it got chopped off. Thats why I gots the 'ook you see." "And the eye patch? How did you lose your eye?" "Polly here did poop in it." "What? Getting bird crap in your eye caused you to lose it?" "Nay I went to wipe it out but it was the first day with the 'ook."
Name - Danrik (NPC) Lvl 14 Cleric of Morradin
So the CLeric is trying to cast some spell (I don't recall now) and happens to be in the reach or the Overworm. A Natural 20 on the Attack of Opportunity deals out 117 points of damage. Which happend to be the perfect number to drop him down to -10. The groups last cleric got eaten also. She stood in the very center of the Black Pudding and couldn't get out. Ick.
I too grinned the evil DM grin when I saw the preview picture in the latest Dungeon. I suspect that the final battle will level what is left of Alhaster. The wiz is a big fan of summoning help as much as possible. I can definatly see the group going against him while Kyuss swats at Angels and Elementals. This is going to be good.
We are still stuck half way through the "Spire of Long Shadows." The mission tempo plus guys going home on leave has effectivly stalled the campaign since that issue came out. I wonder if we'll be able to finish it before we go back to the States. If not.... I see a few weekend marathon sessions in the not too distant future.
Yeah I think it was in Arms&Equipment. I am pretty sure that it is as follows. Dmg 1d4 crit 17-20/x2 I've used these in a campaign. I was running my group through an updated (3.5) version of "Axe of the Dwarvish Lords" Anywho I gave a goblin clan chief a pair of +2 bladed gauntlets. He tore apart the groups fighter. These weapons with Weapon Finesse and someone with Spring Attack are lethal. If you have someone who wants to play a nimble butt-kicking fighter suggest these to him. Sorry I can't help with weight or cost. Can't imagine that it is much of either. I think that they were exotic weapons as well.
The Heal check is good for all kinds of things. Not just first aid or fixing caltrop wounds. It is kind of a medical understanding, not just pluggin' holes. I have seen in campaigns where a Heal check can ID the cause of death. Such as "This wound was caused by a dagger not a sword." Or "this was made by a sharp curving blade, not a straight sword." So Heal on the dead guy can determine that the worms were killing him and he would have died soon. Or that they were different than what they know of Kyuss worms. That part is kind of determined by how much they know of the Kyuss worms at that point. They should have a preserved one in their possesion. My 2cp
What would happen to them? I would suggest the following. Smenk hears word that his hirlings are locked up. He uses his muscle and gets some of the corrupt "police" to go and demand a prisoner transfer as the law is their juristicion and not that of the Temple. Then Smenk would meet up with the crew at the jail to see what they knew. Since Merrovin spilled his guts about the bones Smenk would kill him infront of the others as "a lesson in Snitching." Then he would send the Kullen and crew after the PC's to end the trouble. That's what I would do. Plus it sets up Kullen as a repeating baddy in the campaign. If your heroes win again they may learn from the gang that Smenk wants them dead. More fuel for the fire. Hope that helps
PC Name: Morrik (Rouge)
Perhaps it would be a good idea to give you an idea about the players. For the most part they are all pretty new to DnD. One has been with me for 2 years and the other newb was just learning how to play with this AP. The more experienced player (Morriks player) was replaced by the doppleganger. When the group got to the Octagonal room and fought their doubles the fighter was head to head with Morrik's double while the real Morrik was still chained to the post. Well the fighter thought that DoubleMorrik was the real one and was being controlled by ChainedUpMorrik (the real one) and proceeded to focus his attacks on the real one instead of the double. When ChainedUpMorrik didn't revert to doppleganger form upon death it didn't seem to register. So..... After questioning DoubleMorrik (who was being played by the real Morriks player) the group was again convinced that DoubleMorrik was real. Until he turned on them in the Mirror Maze. Upon hindsight I think that the wizard should have made a knowledge check or anyone else could have made a spot check to realize "Hey the other doubles turned into these grey creatures but that one didn't. We may have made a mistake." As it was the group was kind of glad to be rid of Morrik as he was a jerk. The character, not the player. Good roleplaying on the players part though.
I have a store that makes regular appearances in my games. It is called "Rings and Things." A store that purchases and sells some of the more commonly aquired devices (Ring of Pro+1, Wand of Light....) That kind of thing. As the name fits, the owners; Willum Dercius and his wife Minda make rings and things. They are both lvl 15 Wiz and have retired from adventuring. With all of the item creation feats spread between them they can manufacture items for the group. As former adventurers, they may have a soft spot for the PC's (Diplomacy DC15) and are willing to knock off 10% from the market price for whatever they make or sell to the group. The store itself, well design it as you want, but I have it set as a spartan building where what you want is in glassteel cases along the walls. That leaves it open for them to make sure no one is trying to steal from them. At night when the couple go to their home they lock up the shop and a stone golem guards it. All the doors and windows are arcane locked and they update the password randomly. Plus it is secured from Ethereal travel and stuff like that. Hope your adventures enjoy their shopping at Rings and Things.
So what do deployed soldiers do during their limited down time? Kill the agents of Kyuss is what. My friends and I are half way through our "year" long deployment and have been playing the AoW as much as possible. Leave dates and long missions have delayed a serious amount of game time though. Our expression is "barring missions or explosions we'll game." Right now they are in the middle of a fight with the Worm Nagas (Spire). The fact that we have a nice long adventure path is great. I can't thank the Dungeon crew enough. Two years ago we were playing in Afghanistan and it helped us get away from the war for a while. Anyways. Thanks for making it, thanks for reading this post and thanks for the great product you all put out. -Armer Burkart
