Wonky takes on Ahto's advice and excuses herself after a few murmurs of greeting with some of the Tamlyn councillors and prominent citizens. She then heads for the library, intent to take a few moments to peruse the stacks and ensure her budding institution's safety in the face of the primal chaos - and to source her stately outfit from her private chambers therein.

Sprocket and Doo-dad waggle after her, their erect tails and ears indicating their curiosity in the environs.

Wonky casts a short incantation, then walks up and places her hand on Ahto.

"This small enchantment will provide added weight to your words. I will do my best to translate what you say into Sylvan."

Casting enhanced diplomacy on Ahto. He gets a +2 enhancement bonus to either his next Diplomacy or Intimidation check within the next one minute.

Wonky then turns and nods to Pelipe.

All good! Fey gonna fey, am I right?

"For the sake of argument, if Nyrissa was travelling in disguise, how would you be able to discern that she was not any one of a number of people that you would meet on your way to Tamlyn?" Wonky's pointed question - out of the blue - finds its way to Tromaki's comment.

"How would you be able to tell that she had changed her gender, racial heritage, or even genus or species?"

Wonky, who has seemed to be in a fugue state for the majority of the interaction with the maenad, shakes her tossed green hair as the procession continues forward. As she and Pelipe continue their makeshift study session on the back of a shared horse (having been displaced from their previous secure study), Wonky seems to come to life again.

"I cannot be sure of anything with respect to the First World. The shifting and inconstant nature of that place defies record-keeping at times. That being said, I do recall there being some distant transitive connections between Nyrissa and the Forest known as Thousand Breaths. That place is in the far western regions of our very own so-called Stolen Lands. It may be that we can liaise with one of the other royally-decreed parties charged with canvassing that area once we return to Tamlyn - if we make it back there without further mischief," Wonky finishes, risking a glance behind her at the wagon where Tromaki rides.

Wonky considers the dialogue silently, her mind slotting pieces of information in place with rapid ease.

This maenad desperately wishes to be a part of Nyrissa's court, yet she is so easily fooled that Elenthe was able to portray the role convincingly, if not for a short time. Tromaki indicates that Nyrissa is due to announce her next betrothed in Tamlyn, likely due to the demesne charter unifying the denizens of the First World with the Prime World. No one knows who Nyrissa is likely to name, both there's this Prince Ranalc to consider now as well...

Wonky's gaze glides to Ahto as she considers things.

Some people have all the suitors.

Wonky stirs from her reverie.

"It would seem that our path is clear. This creature is wilfully subjugating those others, human and non-human alike. How long before they come to Tamlyn?"

The gnome looks to Ahto for the signal.

Wonky advances with the team, quiet and thoughtful, but seeming to be withdrawn into some internal struggle. Sprocket gives a quiet and low growl.

Wonky gets up in a bit of a daze.

”Who….?” she manages. Once she determines what has happened, Wonky suggests a plan.

”Sprocket and Doodad can track them by smell. It should be a simple thing. Of course, if the fey have taken an interest, it will not be simple.”

Wonky offers to take the last watch of the night if it is needed.

Hey, VV. You have to do what is right for you.

"Perhaps they have more complete information that could inform us of the situation behind the incidents occurring in Restov and Pitax."

Wonky cocks her head at the messenger guild clerk.

"Oh? That is curious." She then wanders off after perusing one of the expansive maps of the area on the wall.

Wonky waits patiently outside, seated on the curb outside the guild, continuing her scribbles in her journal, absently scratching Sprocket or Doo-dad behind the ears in the moments as she ponders her thoughts.

Wonky remains largely introverted on the trip back, constantly scribbling in her book and muttering to herself. In the evening, she spends more time talking to her dogs than to anyone else.

As the group arrives in Mivon, Wonky accompanies Pelipe to the couriers, curious about any word sent to them from Tamlyn. She expects nothing, but feels a duty to check.

I don't think it gets said enough - Ahto, you're a paragon of role-playing panache.

Wonky prefers to ride either next to the driver (if there's space) or in the carriage. During the ride back, she will be fastidiously copying out notes on the dead treant, Mather Nithra, and unstuck Uringen, attempting to draw parallels and construct theories based on her analysis of events, cross-referenced with her encyclopaedic fund of knowledge.

”The return of unstuck Uringen to the First World will allow us the time we need to make preparations in Tamlyn for the rescued gnomes. It is in fact a good thing,” Wonky says to Pelipe, ”though I recognise the disappointment in the lack of access to the specialised mercantile portals it had offered.”

Wonky sniffs.

”Shall we not tarry?”

Wonky awaits for the hub-bub with the Vixen’s egress to die down before she nods to the others.

”Shall we check in with the mayor of this facet of Uringen? He may be well interested in the recent developments.”

Wonky quickly discerns the impending planar shift.

”To the border! I’m sure it’s this way!”

I’m relishing Wonky’s final few contractions.

Wonky glances down at her canine companions.

She then looks up, scanning the area where they're barking.

Wonky is all for practical sales.

Wonky greets the Embeth Travelers with surprising gregariousness.

"Welcome! We've heard much about you, and your reward is most kind. I'd like to introduce myself - Wonky Prong, Jr, Chief Librarian of the Great Library of Tamlyn. My colleague Pelipe Lightdriver and I are questing in order to seek any scraps of knowledge that we might find to uncover the cause of the Bleaching affliction so common to my kind. We had felt that Nithra was likely selling snake oil cures for it, and we were proven correct, but more to the point - what resources might the Embeth Travelers have that could aid our quest?"

Wonky looks shockingly coy. "I was raised a traveler myself, of course. Not your kind of traveler, but still a tinker's daughter. An itinerant home on the road, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I'd be keen to know more of your organisation, if I may."

"Well there's an unexpected effect," Wonky exclaims. "It would appear that the treant's heart can be used as an amplifying focus for the energy emanating from it. It'll make our work easier, thanks to you, Pelipe." Wonky gives an acknowledging nod.

"The treant in this form is dead, however, but we still may be able to obtain a cultivar from its hollow trunk."

Nature Check, Inspiration: 1d20 + 17 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 17 + (2) = 23

Wonky observes Pelipe’s experiment wordlessly, keen to see the scientific process acted out upon the First World testing stage.

”At what point would you consider this experiment to not bear fruit? That wordplay was unintended.”

Wonky likely considers herself a First World native (a few times removed), hence her repugnance to wield such a weapon.

Wonky recoils at the notion of carrying such a dagger. "I would sooner carry a 'dog-bane' weapon, I would think," she indicates, agreeing that Katrine would be the most apt party member to carry such an important weapon. "Don't mistake me; I believe that it is a necessary enchantment to fight those that we might find ourselves up against. but it's not me that would wield it."

To Pelipe, Wonky poses the reply: "If the treant has indeed perished from the Bleaching, then there is little purpose in returning its heart to its inert form at this point until we can cure it of its lethal illness."

According to the spoiler posts, the treant is dead.

Prior to leaving the First World side of Uringen, Wonky takes the briefest of moments to hunt for a trinket that could be affixed to the harnesses on both Sprocket and Doo-dad. "They need a tchotchke as a reminder of their time here, and possibly a focus for future spells," Wonky explains.

GM: Wonky is prepared to spend up to 20gp for two such baubles, though they don't absolutely need to be that expensive.

I confess that I had no clue about the wooden object being a heart, much less a treant’s heart. Could someone link me to that post? Was it a spoilered post?

Pelipe, I don’t understand your question for Wonky. What heart and what tree are you talking about?

”Ummm….hmmmm,” Wonky lets escape as Ahto makes the offer. ”To be certain, I am not running any clinical trials or anything of that nature at the present moment. Experimentations involving other organic beings have not yet entered the realm of possibility. I am purely gathering information and perhaps completing some key bench research, but nothing more at present. I would not wish to offer any false promises, nor would I like to misrepresent the nature of the work that I am undertaking at present, though it be the most pressing and important work of my life, to be sure.”

Wonky offers a frozen smile to Ahto for a brief second, transforming it into a normal smile for all others.

"Does Uringen - either side - have a library, Mayor Aurelia?" Wonky pipes up abruptly. "As the lead archivist of the Great Library of Tamlyn, I would be keen for any inter-library exchange that could be managed."

”I have one suggestion,” Wonky spouts before the team departs the mayor’s audience. ”Master Goshstone was unbelievably brave in allowing us to use his bakery as a launching point for our assault on Nithra’s forces, not the least because of the veritable hostage situation involving his brother. He should be rewarded for his bravery in some capacity, I believe. Your mayor-ness.”

The last word seems to be one of the few times that you’ve seen Wonky slip up with words. Emotions truly must have come at her hard and fast.

Wonky remains in deep thought as she attends to the Mayor.

”We are sorry for missing the official state function,” she says in a brief window of external focus before drifting into her mind again.

"What?!" Wonky sticks her head out of the oven, bonking into Sprocket.

"Oh. Yes, of course. Well, let's carry on then."

Wonky looks a bit abashed.

Oops.

"Miss Prong, do you need us to wait for you? We can see to our business with the Mayors if you are currently engaged in important research..."

"...Nithra probably had hundreds of years to perfect the art of deceiving people without actually telling an untruth."

"AH!"

Like a thunderbolt, Wonky turns on her heels from the reunited gnome brothers and returns to the portal through the oven. After a pregnant pause in which they glance at each other with all-too-human expressions that seem to say "Not again", the two canines loyal to Wonky race after her, scrabbling through the oven.

Wonky follows Master Goshstone’s brother to Master Goshstone. Once the joyful reunion pauses, the gnome bluntly asks.

”While we are no closer to solving the Bleaching, I’d be keen to know what, specifically, that Mather Nithra promised you. It would seem that he had a powerful yet wicked fey ally, one that might do all the he promised.” The gnome pulls out a slip of paper and a piece of charcoal, scribbling quickly as she does so.

”Was this name (Thousandwhispers) mentioned at all?”

Voldemort.

As is her custom, Wonky seems lost in thought on the way back to Uringen. At the appearance of Althea, Wonky's musing abruptly ceases.

Wonky looks around in alarm. When her colleagues point out the jest, Wonky turns on a grumpy expression that only gets dispelled by Pelipe's unspoken queries.

"I'm keen to put our heads together."

"My master is Nyrissa, the Nymph Queen of Thousandbreaths."

The force of the name smacks the gnome in the face. A straddler of the First World and the Prime World, Wonky understands the power of true names, especially those within the upper echelons of potency.

The potion shouldn't be difficult to manage given its size, and if I remember correctly in 1e, all wondrous items (like those bracers) automatically re-size for the size of the creature using them.

The bolts wouldn't be useful, and the wands would be a challenge to use, but not too much of a challenge for someone small-sized....

Wonky would be interested in either of the two wands, and I'm willing to roll off with anyone for them.

I would be happy with Sprocket remaining as an Animal Companion and Doo-dad instead getting the Fey Animal template. Fey-Touched wouldn't be so useful, as most of the benefits of that don't kick in until HD 5 or greater (and Doo-dad is only HD 2, though I am grateful, GM).

I was actually thinking of using the Research rules to figure out the wooden magical thing powering the portal to the First World, but yes, the Bleaching would also be an excellent target for Research.

Regardless, that helps me choose between Outflank and Precise Shot for my bonus Hunter feat for Wonky. I will go with Precise Shot - it makes perfect sense for Wonky to try to avoid her allies with her stonebow shots.

I will apply a second HD to Doo-dad and await your thoughts on how to Research, both in the short term (the wooden thing) and the long term (Bleaching). Cheers!

GM, can I ask a query about Doo-dad?

Sprocket is my animal companion and levels up appropriately, but Doo-dad.....well, is there any benevolent level up for Doo-dad from his single hit dice to a 2 HD animal?

Lastly, Wonky is taking a second level in Hunter that gives her a bonus feat. I have two choices: Precise Shot (not requiring any prereqs) or Outflank. Outflank isn't very useful to Wonky as she doesn't engage in hand-to-hand if she can help it, but the bonus feat specifically says that Outflank (if chosen) gets applied to any animal companion(s) as well.

Outflank would be super useful for BOTH Sprocket and Doo-dad to have, and I could see them starting to hunt and attack as a pack together. In short, could Wonky take Outflank and have it affect both Sprocket and Doo-dad?

I know; I ask for a lot.

Wonky gets her coat hooked on part of the curtain partition and has her attention diverted.

I like that scene as a capstone to the victory in combat and the subsequent level up - Ahto gets to judge Nithra’s soul via speak with dead. Very apropos.

Wonky would’ve been interested in Bonded Mind as a teamwork feat, but still woo-hoo! 6th level! Decisions, decisions…
