Warren awakes from his stupor on the ground to see new people had joined the group and were divvying up the tiger-demon's things.

Warren approaches them, shaking, "I'm sorry to have to do this. But this isn't for me. I'm not ready for all this, I think I'm more suited to my small town's militia, the piano at the inn, and Rachelle's arms at night. I'm out."

After shaking the hands of everyone who's willing, he mounts Fencer, and rides off into the sunset, playing one last tune on his orphica.

"When that flamin' chariot comes,
I'm gonna leave you
I'm bound for the Promised Land,
I'm gonna leave you
I'm sorry I'm gonna leave you,
Farewell, Oh farewell
But I'll meet you in the morning,
Farewell, Oh farewell..."

Sorry guys, I thought I could jump back in, but it's too much of a time commitment; bonne aventure!

Warren chokes on his song as he sees Krokkin attack a defeated enemy, he sprints back about to urge him to stop when he sees the others come and restrain the creature. Heaving a sigh of relief, Warren collapses on the spot in pain and exhaustion.

I'm assuming Warren was too far away to be healed by the channel since I think Sorogar was between the rakshasa and him before he ran 30 feet away, and channel only has a 30' range iirc.

Sorry for the delay, I've been sick for a couple of days.

Warren reels from the burning pain of the tiger-thing's spell, and runs 30 feet away from the tiger-man, but still in view of it in fear, before the song he's been singing inspires him to stop, turn, and fire his loaded bolt.

"You can throw your hands up,
You can beat the clock,
You can move a mountain,
You can break rocks..."

as for lyrics, I enjoy the challenge. My undergrad is in english with a focus in literary criticism so it is fun to get to adlib sometimes.

I try not to take away your opportunity to post yourself though. SOmetimes I just get super excited as to how things are going and lose my patience. So sorry for boting you instead of allowing more time.

It's actually a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP), but thanks!

No worries, as an experienced GM, I'm well aware of the pressure to keep it moving (especially during combat). I just wanted to take the poetry off your plate.

I also like the "initiative group" idea, given our busy lives and all, it would allow us to go when we're on and keep waiting/spoilers to a minimum.

Sorry I missed my cue. Had some quizzes due for my doctorate program, had to get them finished.

I appreciate the effort, Herk, but you don't have to write out the lyrics if you don't want to...

I'm fine with four, but yeah we could do with more arcane power; Warren's not totally useless with that crossbow, and Mosely's a switch-hitter, so I'm not sure how much we need a ranged attacker.

Also guys, don't forget, Warren's singing a song for Inspire Courage. (see the spoiler on my last post)

Gonna wait for Sorogar to post her turn before I decide what Warren's going to do.

Warren welcomes the life-link!

Not going to be able to be on much today, I'm going to go ahead and post Warren's action, hopefully it won't preempt Krokkin's.

After Krokkin's turn:

Perc: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23

Seeing both threats, and seeing Mosely go after one and Sorogar after the other possibly with Krokkin's help, Warren draws his loaded crossbow and begins singing an encouraging song:
"Yeah, you could be the greatest
You can be the best
You can be a dire ape banging on your chest..."

Inspire Courage for a +1 to attack & damage, and fear/charm saves

It just occurred to me that I put background skill points into Profession (shepherd), but I probably should've put them into Handle Animal (I'd forgotten that skill existed), since his family had more than sheep on their farm... @Herk: is there any way I can retcon that?

Good to know about Herk's power outage, thanks.

Congratulations Trevor86! Kids are awesome!

Sorogar:
Warren keeps playing the orphica, but more softly as he answers, "I'll admit, I haven't quite found a calling. I've done a great many things, and found value in all of them, but none of them were quite what I was meant for. I have occasionally used my music to save my family's herd from predators and snakes, and when I did that I felt...something. So, I figured I'd dive further into that, and this endeavor seemed the best opportunity!"

Hearing the call of acid rain, Warren tries to think what the best thing to do in this situation is for the animals. He puts Fencer under a cover with the other beasts of burden, and tries to determine which animals are getting the most anxious.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Knowledge (Nature): 1d20 ⇒ 6

Warren goes to whichever animals he decides are such and positions himself to get as many animals as he can within ten feet of him and casts Lullaby again with a song: "When I find myself in times of trouble
Ma' Jaidi comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be..."

Male Human Animal Speaker (Bard) 3 | 20/28 HP | AC 18 T 14 FF 14 | Fort +3 Ref +6 Will +2 | Init +3| Perception +5 | Bardic Performances: 7/11

Seeing the weasels have gone to sleep, Warren continues playing (but not casting lullaby) and patrols the entire area, ensuring that all the creatures and his fellow adventurers remain safe from any threat from which the weasels might've otherwise distracted him.

Int: 1d20 ⇒ 15
Perc: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Wis 1: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Wis 2: 1d20 ⇒ 5

Hearing Sorogar and her ghost-bat-friend explain the situation, and ignoring the jab about something being wrong with him, Warren volunteers for first watch, gets out his orphica, and begins plinking out a peaceful, soothing lullaby. He makes his way nonchalantly over to where the angry ferrets were that Brujah pointed out, and uses the song to cast Lullaby on them.

DC 13 will save or they and anyone else within 10 feet of Warren becomes drowsy and inattentive. Warren would make sure none of the group are within 10 feet of him before he begins casting.

Not being sure who Moseley was talking to, and not seeing anyone else pick through the belongings, Warren whistles for Fencer who trots up to him now that the coast is clear. Warren stows the machete, the silver, and the gem in the pack saddle.

Warren will stick with the group.

Warren begins constructing a poem to remember all the information they'd learned...and failing.

Male Human Animal Speaker (Bard) 3 | 20/28 HP | AC 18 T 14 FF 14 | Fort +3 Ref +6 Will +2 | Init +3| Perception +5 | Bardic Performances: 7/11

Warren chuckles, as he peels off the limp vines from around his feet and torso, and sheathes his rapier, "Well that was something, wasn't it? Glad I had such a powerful team to keep me alive! Plants...are not my specialty."

Warren is no longer singing/performing, so the bonus is no longer present.

Survival: 1d20 ⇒ 3

Warren looks around and raises an eyebrow. "I must've gotten turned around in that fight. Which way are the mountains?" As he speaks he equips his heavy crossbow and loads a bolt.

Male Human Animal Speaker (Bard) 3 | 20/28 HP | AC 18 T 14 FF 14 | Fort +3 Ref +6 Will +2 | Init +3| Perception +5 | Bardic Performances: 7/11

Warren's actions probably won't depend much on what Moseley does.

After Moseley goes:
Warren continues singing, seamlessly transitioning into a new song, and tries outright attacking the vine with his rapier instead of trying to break out.

"Dark twisted vines
from a world that never shines
This determination's getting old
I've seen the sky
But my feelings fell behind
And I just can't seem to let it go..."

Rapier (entangled, inspired): 1d20 + 4 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 4 - 2 + 1 = 14 damage: 1d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 1 = 4

Sorry, guys. Thanks Herk. In the future, keep in mind that Warren's INT and WIS are both 9, he's not certain of anything...lol

On his turn:
Warren continues singing to maintain everyone's inspiration "The daughter grew into a fair maid, and with not a single man she laid, instead she took to roses and look! A master of gardens is made!" Warren attempts to escape again EA: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

"Totally new to me," Warren answers, then turning his attention to Krokkin, "What do you mean 'there are feathers'? Is Sorogar right? Do you think these vines are a part of a larger plant that ate these birds?"

Male Human Animal Speaker (Bard) 3 | 20/28 HP | AC 18 T 14 FF 14 | Fort +3 Ref +6 Will +2 | Init +3| Perception +5 | Bardic Performances: 7/11

Warren, accustomed to being wrong and corrected, listens closely to both Flit and Sorogar. Hearing Sorogar's fear of a large ogre tribe, he chimes in, "I think he was just explaining to me that such a thing as an 'ogre tribe' is very rare, and it's more likely just a gaggle of diffuse families. All the same, best to avoid."

Male Human Animal Speaker (Bard) 3 | 20/28 HP | AC 18 T 14 FF 14 | Fort +3 Ref +6 Will +2 | Init +3| Perception +5 | Bardic Performances: 7/11

Hearing these warnings from the fairy, indeed seeing the fairy in the first place, solidifies and makes real the situation for which Warren's signed himself up. He responds, "Thanks for the tip! I think it was the plan to go north, if I'm not mistaken, but we weren't going to get very far in that storm. These ogres you speak of, they wouldn't be a strangely amiable tribe, would they?" The look on Warren's face isn't hopeful, but he figures it's worth asking.

Male Human Animal Speaker (Bard) 3 | 20/28 HP | AC 18 T 14 FF 14 | Fort +3 Ref +6 Will +2 | Init +3| Perception +5 | Bardic Performances: 7/11

Yeah, I was just thinking that...even when you're ranging, you're at a 19 to his 18. Hell, I have the same AC as him...and Grenon is second. So really, it should be Mosely, Warren, Sorogar, Krokkin, Grenon. But it sounds like in roleplay, Krokkin isn't going to allow that, and he's going to push in front of you...which is fine, since he's a mobile martial character.

@warren, I apologize, the scene got fast forwarded into the next scene and into a possible combat situation before i had a chance to respond to your introduction (on a side note, Sorogar already introduced herself to Warren a few posts ago, since I assumed from the GM's posts that the five of us were already together). I'll get back to this new introduction after we get out of this fight (?), I hope.

No worries, I have no problem rolling with it. I imagined since Warren didn't interact with anyone that he slept in. With an intelligence and wisdom of 9 each, I plan on playing him as mildly incompetent...until his skill set comes into play.

Herk, I will go ahead and set up Warren's tagline. With an AC of 18, Warren's pretty squishy, so he'll probably want to hang out in the middle. He's a debuffer primarily though, so more like second (right behind the high AC front-liner, Krokkin).

The bard hears a strange language in his head, so he does what he always does when this happens, just like they trained him in that month he spent with the city council: cast Tongues.

Warren produces a long, thick bit of parchment wrapped in leather, he unties it and begins to read off a spell, "Gaiss Domas Valoda!" If the being wants to resist, it's a DC 13 Will save to negate

If the being does not save/resist:
Thinking back, he can now understand what was being said, and can magically be understood when he speaks aloud, "I am Warren, we are very trustworthy. We have only come to record this land and locate a particular animal for our benefactor. We have no quarrel with you, and will gladly leave, but I personally would much rather prove our trustworthiness to you in some way if possible, so that we might part allies or at least amiable after this storm has passed."

If they resist:
I'm not sure that Warren would notice whether or not the spell worked, if he doesn't, then see the previous spoiler; if he does, then he would likely try to find another place to weather the storm Survival: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (5) + 0 = 5

Male Human Animal Speaker (Bard) 3 | 20/28 HP | AC 18 T 14 FF 14 | Fort +3 Ref +6 Will +2 | Init +3| Perception +5 | Bardic Performances: 7/11

"Sorogar...okay," Warren mutters to himself, un-phased by the apparent distractedness of his new teammate. He jogs over to see what Mosely's looking at.

Will continue this post later. I'm being summoned.

Having grown up on a farm the majority of his life, Warren was no stranger to rain-beaten sleep and shouting. Ahead of the oncoming second rains, comes an annoyingly cheery and soaked bard on the back of his mule. "Thought you could leave without me, eh?" Warren hops down off his mule and looks at the rest of the party, seeing the Idylkin, he thinks for a bit and says, "Grenon isn't it? I've heard of you, haven't I? You've aided the militia in my town before, Megaira the Ungiving speaks highly of your skill."

Looking further he sees the half-orc lady, and says "You, though, I know not by name or reputation," he holds out his hand, "name's Warren Motter, musician, farmer, jack of all trades."

"Krokkin old boy, you made it! I'm afraid I know no more than you do as far as operations are concerned. It seems we're camping here for the night, then moving North in the morning." Given that understanding, Warren begins to unpack his camping gear from his mule's pack saddle.

So, we're in a makeshift base of operations in the jungle? A major campsite from which the expedition will be made?

Goals:
main goal: to find long-term purpose. A big part of Warren's life has been his dabbling, his inability to find work that truly fulfills him, sure he's good at singing and playing music, but he doesn't feel like he's making a real difference with that. Secondary goal: he wants to make enough money (eventually) to make a life with Rachelle, specifically to buy a suitable plot of land to have a family on and live out their days together.

Male Human Animal Speaker (Bard) 3 | 20/28 HP | AC 18 T 14 FF 14 | Fort +3 Ref +6 Will +2 | Init +3| Perception +5 | Bardic Performances: 7/11

Rolling on the table for Grenon and Sorogar:

Grenon: 1d100 ⇒ 8 Friend of a friend; it's possible we're from the same general area, and you could've helped the militia through the forest at one point, making friends with one of the soldiers to the point that I'd heard of you.
Sorogar: 1d100 ⇒ 89 Best friends! I'm not really sure how that could be given our backstories, however. Maybe we became fast friends when we met in Anderia? Or it says "you've seen enough of Durvans," I could be one such Durvan and we could be pen pals from that point? Idk, seems unlikely given you grew up in an orc tribe.

Rival is in the bio: Lord Mishra

Two goals are pending. Again, busy busy day...

Time zone: Eastern (U.S.)

Tried to edit, it didn't work

**Edited**

Top two in order: Trevor86 & Zinnath

Opinions on recruits:
Trevor86's Sorogar shaman character looks like a good addition, heavy divine casting without being useless in melee.

Zinnath's faerie dragon rogue would absolutely be invaluable on any mission. I've personally never played in a game with a faerie dragon PC before.

A nature-based cavalier (King Hot Trash's idea) could be good, especially if he goes high AC, could be a very good flanking partner for Krokkin. But if he's willing to do anything, then we could use a druid or a full nature-based caster, thoughts?

I don't want Gruingar for two reasons: one, we don't need a bloodrager because we already have a partial arcane caster and a barbarian; two, I loathe enlarged text; and three, I loathe kobolds. I realize the last two are personal so feel free to ignore them.

Who is Beswar?

@Herk: I use HeroLab as well, so I don't need my stats up there, necessarily

As for maps, I GM quite a bit and rarely build my own maps. I follow the r/battlemaps and r/dndmaps subreddits and steal them from there. I have dozens now, and I rarely have trouble finding one to fit the scenario.

From there I just make a Google Slides file, share it with the group (everyone's an editor), that way we can paste our own character images (I usually recommend using the avatars on here, so it's easy for everyone to keep straight) and move them.

I prefer slides to drawings, because it allows for easy progression and regression (e.g., if you have a city/ship/outpost encounter map that we might be coming back to more than once, you can just leave it there and make a new slide for other maps).

Requires having a google account, but most people already do, and it's free and quick.

@Zinnath: I agree that the Utility role is sorely lacking

"Well well well, if it isn't Mosely Terrahap! Intrepid explorer and naturalist extraordinaire!" The smooth, almost musical voice would've caught the young ranger off-guard if he hadn't heard the attractive young black man mindlessly playing his orphica upon his approach, not to mention the beast of burden trailing behind him. Warren turns to the white spotted mule behind him, "What do you think Fencer? Is this the Shadow of the Maplewood in the flesh?" The mule goes on chewing whatever feed was in his mouth, completely underwhelmed by his master's words.

Here's Warren.

@Herk, is there anything in particular you'd like in the stat-block?

As for how we know each other, I'm going to go ahead and roll on the table for each of you, and we can nit and pick as we please.

Krokkin:
1d100 ⇒ 46 Romantic competitors. That means at one point we both were in love with the same female. I have a current lover Rachelle Ambrosi. It's possible she was in the merchant group you saved/travelled with, and given her disposition and fearlessness, it wouldn't be too odd for you to fall for her before you discover that she's spoken-for; then you and I would've met when she arrived in Sendariel and introduced us leading to an uneasy friendship. Or we could do something different, thoughts?

Mosely:
1d100 ⇒ 71 Met on a pilgrimage, caravan, or journey; not too difficult. It's possible that we crossed paths on your initial journey. Given that my backstory includes a brief stint with the local militia, you and I could easily have met fighting the orcs. After which, I'd have told you about our small town, and the inn where I sing and play, offering it up as a way-station in your travels. Then over time, we could've become good friends with me providing a sense of stability for you, and you regaling us with tales of your travels. Or we could do something entirely different, thoughts?

Edit: if we're all friends, I assume we'd all be hired by the menagerie guy at first, but Warren's definitely interested in starting a settlement.
