![]() GM Screen:
I kind of hinted at this in my first Shield Block post, but basically, I would like to save myself first, then save my shield second. So I would like to block the first hit that would knock me out or that I can take without breaking my shield. If I were at full HP (47) and my shield were at full HP (20), it would be anything that's 14 hp or below or 52 hp or above. Currently, I have 37 and my shield has 16, so anything that's 10 hp or below, or 42 hp or above.
In a F2F/VTT game, there'd probably be a lower limit to what I'd Block (I'd probably rather save my reaction than block a 1 hp hit), but that's probably too complicated to describe in PbP, and it's more of a qualitative thing than a quantitative thing. --- "Much obliged! ![]() Zallarra wrote: So, what does everyone think a 'relatively safe' bonus is to make a roll? +5? +6? Specifically for this challenge in this scenario: The way I read it, only one person needs to succeed, and whoever makes one check has to make both checks. So I think Fangor, or Fangor plus Froggie, should go. --- Apart from this scenario / in general, the rule of thumb that I use is that if one is trained, one should make a roll. If the DC of the challenge is lower than the DC of Aiding (which it often is in the first few levels), one should just attempt the challenge in parallel. There's some weirdness at low levels because someone could be untrained with a +4, and have it be better than someone who's trained with a +3, but "trained = roll" the easiest rule to remember IMO and by 3rd level, I think it's impossible for any untrained modifier to be better than a trained modifier (don't yell at me if that's untrue). The more complicated answer is that under a typical scheme where crit success = +2 units, success = +1 units, failure = 0 units, crit failure = -1 units, the math works out such that the magic number is natural 15. If anyone needs a natural 15 or lower to hit the challenge DC, they should attempt the challenge straight up; if they need a natural 16 or higher to hit the challenge, but a 15 or lower to hit the aid DC, they should Aid; if they need a natural 16+ to both hit the challenge or aid, then they shouldn't roll at all. But depending on how bad crit failure is vs how good success is, the magic number can change. This also assumes that multiple successes are no better than a single success - if a success per player is required, you're usually forced to roll (but usually there's a choice of skills to use so very few people are forced to roll with a +0). ![]()
