Character Backstory:

Life is cheap in Rag's End, the worst slum in Magnimar. Raven, or "Vulture" as he was known back then, was born a scavenger. Pitiful and discarded, he begged and stole every day just to survive. Worst of all, theft was never his talent. Underneath the mud and filth, he was shrewd and sensible. Graceful and charming. He always felt that if he was dealt a better hand, he could have been like the priests who visited the district to aid the poor. Or like one of those fancy bards, who earn their keep with a song. Eventually, he got his chance. By stealing from the wrong people.

For better or worse, Varisians are considered tough marks. Their reputation for being underhanded meant real thieves avoided them in favor of easier prey. Vulture, however, had not eaten in three days. He shadowed one such band of Varisians for six blocks. They had weapons, but he didn't care. They moved gracefully, like some of the cats he had eaten before. He didn't care. Finally, he made his approach, eager to grab at least one bag of coins. Or even just one single coin.

The "scary one" moved like a blur, grabbing him by the throat and lifting him up. The "nice one" called out, and he knew that she had saved his life. The nice one spoke again, this time in Common. "You are brave, child. Brave and foolish. I see potential in you." She pulled a deck of cards from her pack, and drew a single card from the top. It showed two slaves underneath a bright sun. One of the slave's chains was broken, and he smiled up at the sky. The nice woman smiled. "The Big Sky. You are fortunate, child. I will free you from this place. You will soar through that big sky in time. Do you have a name?" Wracked with fear, the boy replied truthfully. "They call me Vulture." Again, the woman smiled. "Vulture? Yes, your past is dark and pitiable. But in truth, you are a far more elegant bird. My Raven."

10 Minute Background:

Five Things
1. Raven was born in the slums, but he was adopted by traveling Varisians.
2. He doesn't care who his birth parents were, he considers his adopted parents to be his true family.
3. He has cleaned up well from his slum days, and is a successful Cleric.
4. Now that it is largely unnecessary, he prefers not to engage in criminal activity.
5. His loyalty to his family sometimes compromises his morals.

Two Goals
1. I would like to have Raven steer his family away from crime.
2. I would like to have Raven find out the real meaning behind his "Big Sky."

Two Secrets
1. Raven would like to think he never killed anyone in the slums, but he's not sure. Once, when a storekeep was chasing him with a club, he threw a rock at the storekeep's head and knocked him out cold. He never checked to see if he was alive.
2. Raven left behind his only friend in the slums, "Ferret." He doesn't know what happened to her.

Three People
1. "Nice" Jenna Zarelli - His adoptive mother. She is a fortune teller, and a respected member of his Varisian clan.
2. "Scary" Manfrid Zarelli - His adoptive father, and one of the greatest warriors in the clan.
3. Ferret - Raven's oldest friend, now a rising crime lord. She could cause trouble for him if they ever cross paths again.

Three Memories
1. When his mother named him Raven.
2. When he experienced a divine connection to Desna for the first time.
3. The one and only time Manfrid said he was proud of him.

Appearance:
Raven is a jovial young man with long red hair and bright blue eyes. His soft features and gentle personality cause him to appear even younger than his actual age of 18. He is average height for a male human, standing at 5'10' with an athletic build. His musculature is lean and compact rather than bulky however, implying a talent for agility and endurance rather than raw strength. A Desnan Holy Symbol is proudly displayed on his belt, and underneath his armor are pristine clerical vestments.
