My worry, is that there is no DCs for crafting or repairing. It just says the DCs are determined by the GM. If you get an adversarial GM, what is to stop them from setting the DC to repair a wooden shield at a 25 at 1st level.

A number of us who do not like the method the OP brought out is because we suck at rolling.
I've rolled arrays of 4d6, drop the lowest and then totaled it for point buy.
I've had a few in the 30s sure. Most come out in the teens (at best), and the most memorable was a -3 point buy.

I mentioned to Zo! that he might think about getting the Junk races on his network. He told me that the junk race's broadcast rights are owned by another network. I then mentioned how there is a small party of Starfinders that want to compete, and has he thought about sponsoring them to get his show mentioned on another network?
GM stared at me for a minute, then didn't even have me roll for success. Instead Zo! took off, followed by his assistant, as he started calling people on 2 phones at once. Achievement unlocked!

(swimming across a pool is different.)
Or if you have never played an instrument, why should you play almost as good as someone who has spent years practicing?
Or if you come from a backward tribe of barbarians who view ALL magic as evil, and practitioners should be quickly killed. Why should you have any knowledge of how magic works?

I was inspired to make a few cards of characters from Terry Prachett's Discworld.
Here they are with comments to follow.
Rincewind
Ally 1
Human, Wizard
Check to acquire: Charisma, Diplomacy 8
At the beginning of your turn, reveal this card to recharge The Luggage from your discard pile.
Discard this card to evade a non-villain monster, or barrier, then move to a random other location.
Recharge this card to add 1 to your non-combat Knowledge check, or check to recharge.
The Luggage
Ally 3
Arcane, Automaton, Magic
Check to acquire: Arcane, Knowledge 14; Diplomacy 16
At the beginning of your turn, reveal this card to recharge Rincewind from your discard pile.
Display this card. When you would discard an item, place it on this card instead. During your turn, you may bury this card to draw all the cards on it. Succeed at an Arcane 16 check to discard it instead of burying it.
Bury this card to defeat a non-villain monster whose highest check to defeat is no greater than 14. Succeed at an Arcane 16 check to discard it instead of burying it.
Detritus
Ally 2
Troll, Constable, Veteran
Check to acquire: Charisma, Diplomacy, Ranged 12
Discard this card to add 1d4 to a combat check at any location, or bury it to add 1d8 to a combat check at any location.
Discard this card to explore your location. Add 1d4 to all combat checks during that exploration.
With the new mechanic for allies that are linked, The Luggage and Rincewind mesh perfectly.
I'm not sure if the luggage should be a deck 3 or 4 ally. And I think the check to acquire and recharge checks should possibly be higher.
Detritus' power represents his crossbow made from a cut down ballista.

Many times when I see someone complaining about how overpowered a spell is, when you dig deeper you find that the limitations are not being enforced.
Someone on these boards, once complained about Detect Magic being too powerful. Turns out the GM was not enforcing the 3 round rule.
Someone once complained that flight, and overland flight was overpowered, and making it hard to come up with encounters. That time the Gm was thinking to linearly and not expanding his encounters beyond "You are ambushed in the forest."
And some of these spells the OP was complaining about you do not see until 15th level or above. When you should be able to cast earth shaking spells that have lasting effects.
