OK thanks for getting back to me. Thank you for your help

I have two orders pending since earlier this month, sent two emails to customer service but no response.

I am moving to the ISLE OF DREAD.

I agree with Chris; Dungeon! is so much fun. I had about every version of it through the years, and recently picked up an unpunched copy at my local game store. We play it all the time now. Great for a quick pick up game if you dont have lots of time. Also, Dark Tower rocks. If you google it, you can find a flash version that is fun to play just to hear the original sound effects and see the bug-eyed brigands.

There's the classic Dungeon! boardgame as well as the Dungeons and Dragons version of Clue (both can be found on eBay for $20 more or less.) There's also HeroQuest (for about $50 with all it's parts) with its many add-ons. Sure, there's Dark Tower but that'll set you back quite a bit if you're lucky to find a complete game in good condition (a NM one from the UK is going for almost $140 right now.) For something more recent, maybe a look at Hasbro's Heroscape. Sells for $40 new and has lots of add-on pieces for about $15 each set. Hasbro.com has all sorts of pics and info on their Heroscape game.

Good hunting and good gaming!

I have to agree that the sourcebooks are more flavor than substance....not worth the $ for the most part. Go to Borders and read it while having coffee or something...or save your money and buy Shackled City.

The old first edition picture of the grubs burrowing into the adventurer's arm is still great...for whatever reason, we always forgot to check for them, falling for the same "there is a old pile of garbage in the corner" routine...

We run a 2nd edition campaign (we are currently playing the Night Below boxed set). We have one DM, myself, and a few players who arent really that consistent. SInce I hate playing more than one char., we need some more people. DM has played 3rd Ed for sometime in another group, so we might be doing some switching in the future. If it matters, most of us are in our late 20's/early 30's. We usually play in my basement - Solanco area.

I know what you mean...sounds like your players know little about what role playing is really about. As a DM, you can set the boundaries. Although combat is part of the game, like in real life, players must realize that there is always someone or something bigger and badder than they are just around the corner someplace. As a DM, help them to understand that....I agree that maybe you should break their magical item, steal their spellbook, etc., so that for once, they might actually have to THINK their way out of a situation....Good luck.

Sorry for the confusion; those outside the gaming world were excactly who i was referring to. I remember all the bad press thrown at RPG's over that kind of content. One of my friends really took a lot of heat over MMI from his parents. I was really bummed when they scrapped a lot of the old devils from the newer second edition format.

Anyone playing 2nd Edition in Lanc? We have a small group, but membership fluctuates; need some consistent players.

I hear everyone re: Greyhawk. More stuff would be cool (or would have been cool from TSR). The only thing is, Greyhawk was kind of cool for First Edition because it had so little, which meant you had to buy less. Forgotten Realms, in my humble opinion, got way out of hand. I guess for me, a balance of materials would work, but not the commercial onslaught.

We play two campaigns. I DM one 2ndED Planescape campaign. My buddy also DMs a 2ndED Greyhawk campaign. Last sat we played from about 5 pm to 4 am on Sun. We used to play longer than that before jobs came along. It was typical in our younger years to play from about Fri nite to Sat Nite once a month. Personally, I hate short games, since its time to quit just about when the getting gets good. We have some players, tho, that are less familiar with 2ndED rules, so it takes time. Of course, there is the BSing, also. We often use miniatures we have collected over the years, some of them pretty old, so sometimes a head or limb falls off, etc.

I dont think you have missed anything. Mult classing isnt everything it is cracked up to be, espec with some of the kits available thru books like the Fighters Handbook, etc. A lot of people see it as the best of both worlds (or three worlds, whatever); however, it really is half of both worlds. A friend of mine was the king of multi class until he bought a few of those handbooks, and now he is happy playing a fighter from one of the kits. Like you said, you may get "spells and swords" by multi classing, but at higher levels you are left behind, sort of like the adage, "Jack of all trades, master of none." I found the same thing you did; I found that the multi class may help a small, lower level party. Multi classing can be cool, but its not always what it may appear at first. My answer was to add some NPCs on a temporary basis, which made for some cool role playing. I dont think you missed anything, tho.

If you are DMing, check out the "Dead Gods" supermodule for Planescape; hardly the God of Greed in that one. Orcus was always my fave in the MMI, and one of the reasons so many got pissed about all the 'devil stuff' in the first edition rules.

If you guys are into old school DandD, you can download Bone Hill, Palace of Silver Princess, Dungeonland, etc. at the WoTC website. Just go to the homepage and click on Downloads. Then go to the bottom, where it says old edition.

My top five, off the top of my head, are:

1) The Lady of Pain: not really a monster, but she popped into my head first.

2) Githyanki - just look at the Fiend Folio cover.

3) Any giants. Against the Giants does it for me everytime.

4) Tiamat. Say no more.

5) Beholder. Just cool looking
