After several days of rain, it's finally nice weather again. The sun is shining bright and hot, quickly evaporating the puddles left behind from the awful weather of yesterday. It's the second of Erastus and it's looking like it might be the hottest day of the year so far. Summer is well and truly here.
It has been almost four years since the whirlwind of events that saw Sandpoint bathed in blood and chaos. The perpetrators of those events have all been dealt with and the heroes have moved on. The tales about them have moved from status of hot news into almost that of legends. Though the marks of what happened is still visible with the husk of two burnt out buildings still remaining and many villagers sporting old scars. But with so little happening, the force of the law has fallen back to a skeleton crew. It's just sheriff Belor Hemlock, a handful of guards and whatever help they can get from the ranger Shaelu when she's in town, which she currently isn't.
Sandpoint is a moderate town, not as sprawling as Magnimar a day and a half of travel to the southwest, but still with over a thousand residents. It has several bustling industries, including lumber, fishing, farming, and glassblowing as well as a number of unique businesses and entertainment venues.
One of these unique places is The Rusty Dragon Inn. It's located just past the southern bridge overlooking the Turandarok River at the corner of Market and River Streets. It's a large wooden building marked by a sizable weather-worn iron dragon that looms over travellers from the building's roof. Patrons enter through the inn's common room, its largest area, with over a dozen tables, a large stage, a hearth, and of course a bar.
Every window in the establishment is covered in glass, which is quite unusual and luxurious, but it does make sense given that the owner of the tavern, Ameiko Kaijiutsu also owns the glassworks in the city. The inn is quite well known for its exotic and spicy food and this morning the selection is between a spicy fish soup with noodles or a variety of deep fried batter-covered ingredients called tempura.
Along one wall is a message board, containing various tasks and jobs that need doing. For that reason it's quite a popular place for adventures and several seem to have gathered here despite the early hour.
There are a number of other patrons too. An elderly couple dressed in decent, but not fine clothing enjoying breakfast together. A slightly greying man dressed in finery playing go against what appears to be a farmer. A nobleman is eating alone while spending most of his time eying Ameiko and the other staff. Finally a skittish man dressed in what might have been fine clothes once, but now they're singed and dirty and it appears part of his hair has been burnt as well. The skittish man is constantly looking around, behind him and at the door nervously as if he expects an attack of some sort.
