Questions about Tattooed sorcerer

Rules Questions

Hi,
I have a couple questions about Tattooed Sorcerer that I haven't been able to decisively figure out the answer to.

a) Create Spell Tattoo: What is the cost, if anything?
b) Enhanced Magical Tattoo: If you have Mage's Tattoo (Enchantment) then Geas-Quest is a legal choice for this ability. This ability doesn't mention time used to activate the spell like ability at all, hence it defaults to the 1 standard action. You can use this to cast Geas-Quest (or really any long casting time spell) a standard action. Am I missing something?

Shadow Lodge

a) No cost.

b) Looks like you have it right.

a. no cost (except expending whatever spell slot the spell uses)

b. where are you getting Geas-Quest for Mage's Tattoo? the list i see says you only get these spells:
Abjuration: resistance
Conjuration: acid splash
Enchantment: daze
Evocation: dancing lights
Illusion: ghost sound
Necromancy: touch of fatigue
Transmutation: mage hand

other than that Enhanced Magical Tattoo lets you trade out 2 uses of the SLA for 1 use at +2 caster levels instead of +1

Yep, you're missing something.

So no Geas/Quest cheese.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

You are misunderstanding the ability.

Enhanced Magical Tattoo wrote:

At 9th level, the tattooed sorcerer can pick any one spell she knows for which she has a Mage's Tattoo feat. This spell must be one that lacks focus components and costly material components. She can now use that spell as a spell-like ability once per day. This spell-like ability is not enhanced by her Mage's Tattoo, but it functions at +2 caster levels above her sorcerer caster level. Whenever she gains a bloodline power at a later date, she may change this spell-like ability to another qualifying spell.

This ability replaces the 9th-level bloodline power.

You pick a spell you know. As in sorcerer spells known, not the minor spell like granted by the Mage's Tattoo feat.

It must belong to the school enhanced by your Mage's Tattoo feat with no F or costly M components, and can use it as a Spell like ability. You do not get the CL boost from Mage's Tattoo, but instead get a +2 CL boost.

So if you have Mage's Tattoo for Enchantment, you pick any Enchantment spell you have as a spell known that has no F or costly M component, such as Suggestion.

This is a 9th level ability, boosting a 0 level spell is laughable. And the whole section on trading out the spell for a different one would be nonsense.

Create Spell Tattoo should probably be removed from PFS play, as it's basically scribe scroll as a tattoo. As written, it should have a cost as per the spell inscribed. The ability basically just allows the player to have tattooed scrolls in excess of the normal limits on magical tattoos. It also makes for very quick inscriptions.

"Enhanced Magical Tattoo" is not what it is called. I take it you are looking at the D20pfsrd version of the archetype. Try here
Semantics, mostly, but it helps to know what it is called when asking for help about it.

As for your question, Geas would qualify for that "Enhanced Varisian Tattoo (Su)" ability. You'd have to know the spell already, have picked Enchantment for your Varisian Tattoo feat (or have it as a bloodline power as per Bloodline Tattoos Ex).

As for the standard action bit, no. Geas has a 10 minute casting time and the ability doesn't mention reduced casting times. The Sp rules say to use 1 standard action "unless noted otherwise in the ability or spell description." And the spell clearly says it requires 10 minutes.

That's probably how its supposed to work RAI, but RAW it says "pick any one spell she knows for which she has a Mage's Tattoo feat". Since the only individual spells for which you can "have a Mage's Tattoo feat" come off that list those are the only ones she gets.

It's badly written, if it was supposed to work the way you have pointed out (which again is probably RAI) it should have been written like this: "At 9th level, the tattooed sorcerer can pick any one spell she knows from a school for which she has a Mage's Tattoo feat."

No, the school wording doesn't work because the archetype makes the feat also apply to your bloodline spells.

OOOOOH! i totally missed the bloodline tattoos bit, thats where they get geas-quest. that makes way more sense now

with just Mage's Tattoo and Enhanced Magical tattoo you only get those 0-level spells (which wouldn't make any sense for a 9th level ability)

Since the feat applies to a school and the archetype makes it apply to bloodline spells, you choose from that set for what the spell tattoo is.

No, that doesn't make sense.

The list in the feat are not "spells" that you "know," they are spell like abilities.

Select a school of magic (other than divination) in which you have Spell Focus—you cast spells from this school at +1 caster level. Additionally, you gain a single spell-like ability usable up to three times per day.

The feat applies to spells from a school, not to the school itself (which wouldn't even make sense).

So with Enhanced Varisian Tattoo you a)pick a spell you know, b)that you have Varisian Tattoo for, c)without focus or costly material components

A) means it is a sorcerer spell known, not a spell like ability
B) means it must belong to the school selected with the feat or a bloodline spell
C) is pretty self explanatory
