Rommin watches the hit that Therbin takes and raises his bow. He hesitates a moment when he sees that the dwarf is still alive! He puts an arrow into the stubborn giant. Longbow to hit 1d20 + 9 - 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 9 - 2 + 1 + 2 = 30 deadly aim, pbs, favored enemy
Edit: Possible crit.
It looks like things have progressed some since I posted the withdraw, so I'll go ahead and keep that action the same and trust Brother Hawthorne to keep the matron from the squishiest of our team. Rommin watches the matron as he sheathes his sword. He raises his bow and looses an arrow at her. Prescience 1d20 ⇒ 12
Edit: He'll substitute in that 12 for his to hit roll, giving him a 16 total, if that makes a difference.
Rommin sees the one trying to flee, and considers. Maybe the crazy little gnome could stop him, maybe not. Rommin tries to help stop it. Prescience 1d20 ⇒ 14 Rapid shot, deadly aim.
Edit: let's sub that 14 prescience roll for the 3 on the second roll, giving it a 19 as well to hit result.
Rommin aims past Ungor massive limbs and fires at a giant in the background (orange). Longbow, rapid shot, deadly aim, favored enemy.
With Wisp on his shoulder, Rommin leans against the door. He raises one had to hear ear to block out some of the noise of the melee while he focuses on listening for activity beyond the portal. Perception 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (6) + 21 = 27 Rommin listens at the door. Can he tell what if anything is going on beyond it?
Rommin hugs close to the wall, keeping the way clear for others to move past him. With his bow raised, he waits with the patience of a hunter for the perfect shot. Thanks for the bot, Vakmu. The site wasn't showing me new posts for the thread! You did capture his main routine; if these were more dangerous foes he might use his prescience as well.
Rommin stays a half dozen yards behind Hawthorne, watching for signals or obvious trouble. I completely agree that we should keep moving, though a quick detect magic may help us find trinkets that we wouldn't want used against us when things get hot. A giant is tough enough without having a potion of bears endurance or something like that.
At the hand signal, Rommin moves up. Taking stock of the situation, he slides up to one of the giants. Stealth 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (17) + 19 = 36 He pulls up his bow and fires a single well placed arrow into the slumbering behemoth. CDG, auto hit. Damage 3d8 + 33 ⇒ (8, 5, 8) + 33 = 54 If that goes as hoped, he'll move to the second and repeat the process. CDG, auto hit. Damge 3d8 + 33 ⇒ (8, 2, 5) + 33 = 48 If both work, he'll recover his arrows and clean them with a quick murmured spell. prestidigitation.

Real life comes first, and right now real life is a bit more... real. I love the way you are laying out this story for us, and any time you feel like it will make a nice break for you, I'll be glad to pick up again.
Before we look at going through another door, we should see if we can take any quick steps to minimize the changes of an alarm being raised if someone comes through here. Maybe use cloaks to cover them? Or the massive bear we have to drag them away? When it comes to the scouting and CDGs, I am fine letting Hawthorne take the first crack at it when the opportunity presents. His method is less messy than mine. :) And I can be back twenty feet or so with a ready action to CDG if Hawthorne's thump doesn't do the trick. Thoughts?
Stealth 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (20) + 19 = 39 Perception 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (14) + 21 = 35 Rommin follows Brother Hawthorne's lead. He keeps a score of paces back from the little warrior, bow at the ready. He watches for hand signals from the little fellow, trusting his judgment if he needs Rommin closer or further back. When Hawthorne is lining up for a strike on a hapless sentry, Rommin draws his bow back in case the hardy stock of the giant-kind wins out over the deft blow. When Hawthorne scouts ahead, Rommin will follow about 20' behind, more or less if Hawthorne wants. He'll ready an action to attack the creature if the cdg doesn't take.
Order looks good. For those in group that aren't as comfortable navigating the wilderness, Rommin takes advantage of the time that Ungor is preparing to coach them on getting back if they are on their own, even if it is dark. "Remember, head towards the peak that is rounded, turn towards the sound of running water when you hear it. When you get to the stream, follow it uphill until the log across it. Then leave the stream up keep going up until you get to the cave. Round peak, stream, log, always up."
My tactic of choice is tossing a few well placed arrows into the fray. If I can finish a foe that a front-liner wounded or take out a foe that is creating a flank, awesome! Same with enemy leaders or casters. I like Vakmu putting me at the back of the line; when necessary, I can sword-up and be the rear guard for our casters.
Rommin doesn't look at the warriors as they compare combat styles; his gaze searches the distance for the returning halfling or signs of trouble. But he contributes his own thoughts. "It is good that you confer on tactics. I myself can resort to the sword if need be, but more likely I will deliver carefully placed shafts to supplement your rending."
I think we need to see what comes of Hawthorne's scouting. If a great many of them are drunk, passed out or hungover, that might let us assassinate some and may give others disadvantage on their attacks. If we can set up the cave that the familiar found as a place to retreat to, I would be all for an incursion tonight.
"May the spirits of the elves go with you, Brother Hawthorne." As Hawthorne heads out to scout, Rommin lends him his cloak of elvenkind to help ward him from sight. "Wisp, go with him." The small thrush trills in acknowledgment. "Send him back with word if you run into trouble, or want us to advance to your position."
Radish Hollow... Rommin tries to recall if he's been to or through that community, but nothing comes to mind. He looks the new gnome down and downer and says "Well, it is clear you aren't a giant trying to infiltrate our effort. I say, 'welcome!' But, can you spare us some patience? We are going to approach the giants' lair with some caution, scouting it out and planning our assault. We don't want to-" For an instant, he was going to say "get overwhelmed", but given the gnome's attitude, he instead finishes by saying "We don't want to let any of the giants or their minions escape by going at them haphazardly."
I will try to post when I can, but if you do need to bot me feel free to do so. I'd hate to slow the game's momentum just because I have been having a spike in workload. I'm hoping it will drop off some after this week. Rommin will definitely share anything he knows or discovers with scouting or skill checks. And he will cooperate with group plans; he not above taking risks like scouting himself.
