As much as I hate to lose this game, I'm glad to see you taking steps to take care of yourself. Thank you for the time you put into this; it was certainly enjoyable and nostalgic for me! And if RL settles enough for you at some point, I'd love to game with you again.

Rommin whispers to the thrush on his shoulder "Wisp, find the giantess. Come back and tell me where she is. If I am incapacitated, tell any of the others."

With that, the little bird takes off in the direction that the giantess was last seen.

Vakmu Blackhorse wrote:
Fenla, are you willing to risk Twilight pushing forward to scout for us? We need to find and put down that giantess...

I'm on it. :)

Rommin watches the hit that Therbin takes and raises his bow. He hesitates a moment when he sees that the dwarf is still alive! He puts an arrow into the stubborn giant.

Longbow to hit 1d20 + 9 - 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 9 - 2 + 1 + 2 = 30 deadly aim, pbs, favored enemy
Damage 1d8 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 = 16

Edit: Possible crit.
Confirm 1d20 + 9 - 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 9 - 2 + 1 + 2 = 24
Bonus damage 2d8 + 6 + 8 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (1, 2) + 6 + 8 + 2 + 4 = 23

Totally. Real life first, always. Even if you just need a hiatus, I'd be glad to pick up again at any point.

Rommin darts forward, lightly springing over the corpse of the matron, landing at the open doorway that she emerged from. With his bow at the ready, he takes in the scene in the room.

Double move, reflected on the d20 map.

It looks like things have progressed some since I posted the withdraw, so I'll go ahead and keep that action the same and trust Brother Hawthorne to keep the matron from the squishiest of our team.

Rommin watches the matron as he sheathes his sword. He raises his bow and looses an arrow at her.

Prescience 1d20 ⇒ 12
Longbow to hit 1d20 + 9 - 2 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 9 - 2 - 2 + 1 = 14
Longbow damage 1d8 + 3 + 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 18

Edit: He'll substitute in that 12 for his to hit roll, giving him a 16 total, if that makes a difference.

Ungor the Dire wrote:
Rommin, I plan on fighting the Ogre right here versus in the hallway. not squeezing is better for my AC :)

Since that's the case... GM, would it be okay if I changed my action?

Seeing Ungor emerging from the room, Rommin slides back carefully to make room for the massive druid.

Withdraw action, reflected on the map.

Rommin glances over his shoulder. Seeing Fenla darting into the room and Vakmu behind him, he presses his attack against the matron to guard the less sturdy of their squad.

Longsword attack on matron, to hit 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 2 = 10, damage 1d8 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 2 = 6.

Alas.

Rommin marks the positions of Vakmu and Fenla, then stands his ground. He draws his sword and slashes at the mighty matron.

Bow to his offhand, draws sword, attacks.

Longsword to hit 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 7 + 2 = 15, damage 1d8 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 2 = 6

Rommin sees the one trying to flee, and considers. Maybe the crazy little gnome could stop him, maybe not. Rommin tries to help stop it.

Prescience 1d20 ⇒ 14

Rapid shot, deadly aim.
To hit 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 7 - 2 = 19, damage 1d8 + 3 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 7 = 18
To hit 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 7 - 2 = 8, damage 1d8 + 3 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 3 + 7 = 17

Edit: let's sub that 14 prescience roll for the 3 on the second roll, giving it a 19 as well to hit result.

Though it pales in comparison to the flailing jaws and claws of the massive bear, Rommin tries to make a difference with a single well-placed arrow shot.

Deadly aim arrow at orange giant. To hit 1d20 + 9 + 1 - 4 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 9 + 1 - 4 - 2 = 18. Damage 1d8 + 3 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 4 + 1 = 13

Good to have you with us!

Rommin aims past Ungor massive limbs and fires at a giant in the background (orange).

Longbow, rapid shot, deadly aim, favored enemy.
To hit 1d20 + 9 - 2 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 9 - 2 - 2 + 2 = 19, damage 1d8 + 3 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 4 + 2 = 13
To hit 1d20 + 9 - 2 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 9 - 2 - 2 + 2 = 11, damage 1d8 + 3 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 4 + 2 = 17

I'm sure we're not the only ones that were sent to deal with this menace. More fodder is always welcome! If someone is following the game and reached out, that tells me their likely to want to stick with it.

It looks like Rommin has line of sight to the blue giant, so he'll send an arrow at it.

To hit 1d20 + 9 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 9 + 1 - 2 = 19 Damage 1d8 + 3 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 1 + 4 = 12

It looks great!

If Rommin hears any activity behind the door he's at, he'll relay what he hears to the others through Fenla. If there isn't the sounds of a threat, he'll move down to the designated door to back up Brother Hawthorne when he kicks it open.

Message to Garcia

A book, read by quite a few Marine types.

I hadn't heard of it before, but I'm going to have to check it out!

Not that I'm a marine type, just curious.

With Wisp on his shoulder, Rommin leans against the door. He raises one had to hear ear to block out some of the noise of the melee while he focuses on listening for activity beyond the portal.

Perception 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (6) + 21 = 27

Rommin listens at the door. Can he tell what if anything is going on beyond it?

Rommin moves back to the door at the end of the hall (shown on map) and listens at the door in case the rending behind him alerts anyone to come and help the ogres.

Rommin hugs close to the wall, keeping the way clear for others to move past him. With his bow raised, he waits with the patience of a hunter for the perfect shot.

Thanks for the bot, Vakmu. The site wasn't showing me new posts for the thread! You did capture his main routine; if these were more dangerous foes he might use his prescience as well.

Rommin also advances, watching the corner of the corridor for any sign of the ogres coming down.

Move action to the spot located on the map. Standard action: ready to attack first ogre that shows itself at the corner. To hit 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21, damage 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9.

GM, unless there is something special, Rommin should go in the surprise round too per his wizard class ability forewarned

Rommin utters a spell, and immediately starts to grow indistinct. Casting blur.

I appreciate you acting as caller during these more routine encounters to help keep our momentum up. I've done that in a couple of games before when my workload wasn't quite as high as it is now. When we hit a novel situation that doesn't follow our standard protocols, we can voice more opinions.

Rommin stays a half dozen yards behind Hawthorne, watching for signals or obvious trouble.

I completely agree that we should keep moving, though a quick detect magic may help us find trinkets that we wouldn't want used against us when things get hot. A giant is tough enough without having a potion of bears endurance or something like that.

At the hand signal, Rommin moves up. Taking stock of the situation, he slides up to one of the giants.

Stealth 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (17) + 19 = 36

He pulls up his bow and fires a single well placed arrow into the slumbering behemoth.

CDG, auto hit. Damage 3d8 + 33 ⇒ (8, 5, 8) + 33 = 54

If that goes as hoped, he'll move to the second and repeat the process.

CDG, auto hit. Damge 3d8 + 33 ⇒ (8, 2, 5) + 33 = 48

If both work, he'll recover his arrows and clean them with a quick murmured spell. prestidigitation.

Rommin continues to follow along behind the halfling, giving him room but ready to rush up if he finds trouble.

Rommin edges forward, watching the little halfling up ahead. He gives the master acquisitionist the room he needs to do his thing, but watches for any sign he wants help at the point of the group.

This week has been a bit of a wipe. Sorry about that guys, but the stars kept refusing to align. I will continue on Monday once the new normal is, er, normalized.

I totally get it. Real life comes first, and right now real life is a bit more... real. I love the way you are laying out this story for us, and any time you feel like it will make a nice break for you, I'll be glad to pick up again.

I'm checking in as often as I can. I think we have a good foundation here; we just need to be patient.

Rommin nods when the whisper hits his ear and he slips ahead of the massive bear. He takes the option to whisper a reply "I can cast a divination to detect concealed doorways if Hawthorne thinks it is prudent."

Before we look at going through another door, we should see if we can take any quick steps to minimize the changes of an alarm being raised if someone comes through here. Maybe use cloaks to cover them? Or the massive bear we have to drag them away?

When it comes to the scouting and CDGs, I am fine letting Hawthorne take the first crack at it when the opportunity presents. His method is less messy than mine. :) And I can be back twenty feet or so with a ready action to CDG if Hawthorne's thump doesn't do the trick. Thoughts?

Rommin slips up the stairs with Hawthorne. When they see the sleeping giant, he nods to the other and carefully aims an arrow.

Rommin gets within 30', and then does a CDG. Damage 3d8 + 9 + 21 + 3 ⇒ (4, 7, 4) + 9 + 21 + 3 = 48.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Doing well. My wife and I qualify as high risk, so we are only going out rarely. I am fortunate that I can telecommute (and have been for a little while now), and we have a great family support structure nearby.

Thanks for the bot, GM. I'm sorry for the erratic posting. I'll try to get back to a solid rate as soon as I can.

When I post an action in advance like that again, I'll try to do the rolling as well to make it easier to resolve.

I will place and delay until after Hawthorne.

Stealth 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (20) + 19 = 39

Perception 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (14) + 21 = 35

Rommin follows Brother Hawthorne's lead. He keeps a score of paces back from the little warrior, bow at the ready. He watches for hand signals from the little fellow, trusting his judgment if he needs Rommin closer or further back.

When Hawthorne is lining up for a strike on a hapless sentry, Rommin draws his bow back in case the hardy stock of the giant-kind wins out over the deft blow.

When Hawthorne scouts ahead, Rommin will follow about 20' behind, more or less if Hawthorne wants. He'll ready an action to attack the creature if the cdg doesn't take.

Order looks good.

For those in group that aren't as comfortable navigating the wilderness, Rommin takes advantage of the time that Ungor is preparing to coach them on getting back if they are on their own, even if it is dark. "Remember, head towards the peak that is rounded, turn towards the sound of running water when you hear it. When you get to the stream, follow it uphill until the log across it. Then leave the stream up keep going up until you get to the cave. Round peak, stream, log, always up."

My tactic of choice is tossing a few well placed arrows into the fray. If I can finish a foe that a front-liner wounded or take out a foe that is creating a flank, awesome! Same with enemy leaders or casters. I like Vakmu putting me at the back of the line; when necessary, I can sword-up and be the rear guard for our casters.

"We should set a rally point before we go any further. If we get separated, it will give us a place to meet up again."

Immediate attack, though not guns blazing.

Sorry. There are dozens and dozens of posts in this for me to catch up on. I'll get through them as soon as I can.

Thanks for the bot, GM.

Rommin doesn't look at the warriors as they compare combat styles; his gaze searches the distance for the returning halfling or signs of trouble. But he contributes his own thoughts. "It is good that you confer on tactics. I myself can resort to the sword if need be, but more likely I will deliver carefully placed shafts to supplement your rending."

I think we need to see what comes of Hawthorne's scouting. If a great many of them are drunk, passed out or hungover, that might let us assassinate some and may give others disadvantage on their attacks. If we can set up the cave that the familiar found as a place to retreat to, I would be all for an incursion tonight.

"May the spirits of the elves go with you, Brother Hawthorne." As Hawthorne heads out to scout, Rommin lends him his cloak of elvenkind to help ward him from sight. "Wisp, go with him." The small thrush trills in acknowledgment. "Send him back with word if you run into trouble, or want us to advance to your position."

Radish Hollow... Rommin tries to recall if he's been to or through that community, but nothing comes to mind. He looks the new gnome down and downer and says "Well, it is clear you aren't a giant trying to infiltrate our effort. I say, 'welcome!' But, can you spare us some patience? We are going to approach the giants' lair with some caution, scouting it out and planning our assault. We don't want to-"

For an instant, he was going to say "get overwhelmed", but given the gnome's attitude, he instead finishes by saying "We don't want to let any of the giants or their minions escape by going at them haphazardly."

Perception 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (6) + 19 = 25 +2 if vs. giants. Note: this does not include Alertness feat since Wisp is away scouting.

Stealth 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (13) + 19 = 32

I will try to post when I can, but if you do need to bot me feel free to do so. I'd hate to slow the game's momentum just because I have been having a spike in workload. I'm hoping it will drop off some after this week.

Rommin will definitely share anything he knows or discovers with scouting or skill checks. And he will cooperate with group plans; he not above taking risks like scouting himself.
