![]() Dies the Fire by S.M. Stirling. First book in the Emberverse series. Its worth a read. The second book, The Protector's War, slows quite a bit but was enjoyable to me. I have not yet read, or even bought the third book, A Meeting at Corvallis. Evidently there are now 10 books in this series. ![]()

![]() Ditto. We gotta trade LG stories sometime. Most of my characters were from the Yeomanry, but I traveled to California so much back then that i had one character from the Kingdom of Nyrond. And its similar. More splat book type books being released for revenue. More strange character builds taking advantage of unplanned synergies. Players "gaming" the system (Hey, we are gamers. Its what we do. ) to get more gold/resources than the campaign was expecting. etc. But, the Pazio guys are doing a better job closing loop holes and doing it faster than in LG. One thing I like they did was limit gold for playing up, while lowering the hit for playing down. In a 1-5 mod the 1-2 gold might be 500 and the 4-5 gold would be 1500. Now if you play a level 2 or even 3 at the 4-5 tier you get an average of the two tiers gold (i.e. 1000) instead of the full 1500. Likewise if your level 5 sits down at a con hoping to play up and everyone else at the table is a level 1 you walk away with 1000 gold instead of 500. Another thing is limit what you can do when playing pre-gens. Some people were playing pre-gens to get to play a higher level character when they had a valid one, save resources since gold spend when playing a pre-gen does not count against your actual character gold, and even avoiding dangerous mod death risk. But now if a pre-gen dies and you use that chronicle for a character, the death comes with it. There is a good summary of changes with the latest campaign docs. And I gotta say that the back stories are very good. Sometimes I only catch on after the arc ends. Just now figuring out the whole Shadow Lodge thing as my Shadow Lodge PC only made it to level 2 before that faction bit it. If you get a chance play both faction finale mods for Lantern Lodge and Shadow Lodge. And of course play the Waking Rune with your highest and best character you have when you can. And bring your "A" game to that one. I am going to try to keep up with the story behind year of the Demon better. There are hints to what is going on that I usually only see when the endings are revealed. ![]()

![]() Its a new day so the Share language spell will end unless renewed. River will renew it, but also offers to teach the team a new common tongue. The sooner you learn all to speak the local tongue the better. It actually takes a good chunk of my power to cast the enchantment on you. So its language lessons by the fire every night and review every meal time. Agreed? As the team is assembling River's small mountain lion takes a playful interest in the new dog that E-Terah brings along. There is a little playful scuffling but it settles down and soon, with a little encouragement from River the cat is trying to be friends. AS the group forms up River tells Beylinda that he understood that the sheriff has asked that E-Terah be in the front of the entire group due to her darkvision. He admits that he is not sure if any are spellcasters Doubtful. Its a rare gift still, but we should ask. ![]()

![]() I had fun. I need a few days of non-gaming and 8 hours nights of sleep to recover. Year 4 mods are pretty deadly and year 5 have continued the trend. And at these events there are a lot of good judges who know the rules and do not softball. I have 10 PFS characters. Two of them are level 12. Two 9s, three 8s, one 7, one 6, a 5, and two 2. The point is that I have a reasonable amount of play time and I have never had a character die. Two died Friday. lol. ![]()

![]() Once the group is together River asks So, did anyone learn anything? After listening to the group he puts forward an idea. One thing we could do is offer to help the town go looking for their men. That patrol station you found should have had 12 men stationed there. There were what, two dead there? That means up to 10 were taken. They hope to find a trail or at least signs of where the rest of the men are. The locals also want to send out a team to take a look at the summoning site for themselves and see if there are any other signs of Brotherhood or Cali activity. Their current plan is to get about two dozen men and head straight in along Hill Road with a pair of battle-wagons. Since you all have been to both sites I figure they would love to have us along as back up and might even hire us to help. What do you think? ![]()

![]() In his talks with the sheriff River suggests that the newcomers are going to need to earn their keep and that they seem quite capable. He wonders if the Sheriff might have some task with an associated bounty that is worthy of doing. Perhaps an escort for this group that is headed to the lava beds? ![]() Beylinda, The share language spell River cast on you will last a full 24 hours. Of the rumors he catches River is most interested in the one about the centaur tribes of the plains and the plan to by the sheriffs on a raid on the Lava Beds, aiming to kill the bull minotaur in charge. River would be interested in trying to calm the centaurs, strengthening or re-forming any alliance if he thinks its possible. Maybe there is some cause for their unrest that could be addressed. And if he thinks this Minotaur needs to be put down and that the shderiffs are worth supporting he might approach his new friends about seeing if they would be interested in helping with this. So, he will gather what information he can on both of these topics, storing away the other rumors for later. ![]()

Alabama caps the purchase at 750.00 but Tennessee lets you buy a computer up to 1500.00 and not pay sales tax. I want to buy my daughter a nice Mac Laptop. It will likely run 1200.00 or so. Planned to give it to her for Christmas. So do I buy it now tax free, or wait and buy it in December and pay tax. And if now, is it worth the drive up to Nashville to save tax on 450.00-500.00. Decisions... Oh yea, if anyone else is interested, Apple will through in a 100 iTunes gift card for a "back to school" incentive IF I buy this month. River had the summoning ceremony described to him and he can summon things himself, spontaneously. He knows you were summoned. The things he summons come from another place. Since you were summoned he assumes you do too, and is only confused that you have stayed tied to his home plane for so long. He has only used the term "another place" and certainly does not know where you come from. Makes sense to me anyway. Going with that. River nods. I have imbued you with the power to speak the local common tongue. It will last for a full 24 hours. Might I come in and speak with you for a while? Assuming Beylinda is ok with a longer conversation he comes in and sits before continuing, a large cat comes in behind him and makes itself comfortable on the floor by his feet. I am a druid and follower of some very old ways, at least for here in Oregon. This spell takes a considerable amount of my power and I cannot do this for the rest of your people so you will have to translate for them. Are you familiar with the term Druid? he continues, informing Beylinda that he learned from the girls how her group was summoned by the shepherd and that they must be from another place. I know less about your world than you about ours and would like to know more. But since you are here in my world I believe it more urgent that you know about my world first. He will quickly tell her about the Changes that happened (20 years ago now? 30?), mentioning that technology does not work like it did in the times of his parents youth and that his world was having to re-learn how to do things like they did a very long time ago. He will also go over the local power structure and the good and bad about it - not hiding any of the bad, and that he stands more with the farmers and the land than with any organized government. Here is a chance for our DM to tell me some things too. :) What else can I answer for you?

![]() Backtracking a little As the group walks River tries to talk to Veronica. From the story I heard from the other girls it sounds like your father opposed the brotherhood sorcerer and only helped him to save you. In the end he attacked the brotherhood agent the only way he knew how. He was a brave man. Tell me about him. During questioning. River explains everything he can to the the lawman, explaining how its likely that the brotherhood summoner was up to something very bad, about to fuel some evil summoning with the girl's lives, and the shepherd thwarted him, sacrificing himself to do so. He will add whatever he learns from Veronica to the story and tell it truthfully but with as much positive spin as he can for the shepherd (unless he picks up on something I do not know about). Its likely these folks got summoned in place of whatever the brotherhood had in mind. The fought off demons and managed to put down that summoner to boot. They saved your girls. ![]() Wow - Where to start? - First of all, Yes River does have a plan to translate, but he can not implement it until after we all sleep. So, for today we will have to tough it out. Since two of you can cast comprehend language, you could cast one on one of you and the other on me... Oh, and this is part 1 - I am out of time, More to follow. I would rather not rush the scene at the tower just yet. During the the fight with the stirges River proves deadly with his bow, launching what seem to be metal shafted arrows at the creatures in the air with better than average precision. He closes as he fires, moving and firing over multiple rounds. Perhaps someone with spellcraft (DC16) could roll to recognize his spell as Aspect of the Falcon. When no more stirges remain flying he drops his strange compound bow (pulleys) and closes with an axe of a strange material whose handle is not quite metal or wood. When no one is in any danger he goes around making sure each stirge is dead. After the fight he tends to your wounds with considerable skill (+10 Heal) and a healers kit full of all sorts of wonders. He uses healing magic on the most wounded of the group. Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8 He does take particular note of E-Terah and is frustrated that he cannot talk to her. He also notes Thom's ears, and seems to switch languages afterwards, trying to speak to him in what likely sounds more familiar to the group. (Sylvan anyone?) He is obviously positively influenced by Thom's ears and discourages him from covering them up, but does not prevent it. He talks to all the girls to get their story, and spends more time with the "witch" than the others. He seems to scold the others, but gives up. You might get the idea that he is frustrated with their behavior towards the girl. After hearing her full story he actually hugs her, and attempts to comfort her. Just before the group is ready to move on he whistles loudly and a young mountain lion comes bounding up. He introduces the cat to each person there letting the cat get their scent and encouraging everyone to pet the animal to the point of familiarity. Finally he seems ready to go. He gives the cat some sort of command and it bounds off ahead of the group, obviously scouting ahead. At one point it the trip it comes back with a game bird in its mouth, obviously proud of its kill. River takes the bird almost reverently and quickly field dresses it with the obvious skill of a practiced hunter. As the group passes through the farm land River stops to talk to some of the farmers. He seems to give them advise now and again. In one case he casts a quick spell and creates gallows of water to fill a trough for a man trying to carry water a long way for his livestock. In another he casts a spell of guidance on a woman trying to repair a tool. A few of the famers seem to either know him or know of him; you are not sure. All seem to appreciate his help and a couple make small gifts to him; An apple hear, a small loaf of bread there. River shares whatever he gets with the group, but always thanks the river and they says some sort of prayer before he shares. In general you get an earthy wholesome feel for River. He would come across as a cross between Grizzly Adams and a 1970's flower child. He seems very comfortable outside in nature and because he cannot speak with you gravitates to talking to the girls, doing what he can to ease any tensions between them. ![]()
