Background
--------------------

Ral is the only son of Kol Denaris and Chanterelle Denaris, a pair of nobles from the staid but wild world of Onderon.
As an only son, he is the ostensible heir to a large fortune and a noble title, but he is estranged from his father. He still has contact with his mother, on whom his father dotes. He currently has access only to a small trust fund, which he has leveraged into some business connections.
In his youth, Ral had the finest education available on Onderon, steeped in Galactic history, business, diplomacy, and many personal hobbies. He was escorted on carefully-guided tours to the wilderness of the planet and learned much of the history of his family and of the planet itself.
As heir to one of the Onderonian noble lines, Ral had access to certain family heirlooms, including ancient repositories of secret knowledge passed down for generations over the course of thousands of years. Much of this was fragmentary and incomplete, but bits were stolen from Sith teachings from the time of Freedon Nadd, when Sith lords ruled Onderon and many scions of the Houses studied their skills with the Force. The small bits that Ral learned lacked the deep teachings of the Sith, and he focused only on a few small tricks, learning to hone the ability to control minds and create illusions.
Now that the Empire is moving more strongly against Onderon, Ral has taken to diversifying his holdings, in the expectation that the Empire will start to seize assets from the noble houses. For now his family and the nobles of Onderon remain neutral in the conflict between Empire and Rebellion, but that could change if the Empire makes decisive moves to try to bring Onderon to heel.
Because of his business ties, Ral has had to go off-planet for various meetings and opportunities. This unfortunately gave the Empire a chance to seize him on some (partially) spurious charges of smuggling and dealing in contraband.

Appearance: Ral is handsome, with a well-groomed appearance, soft light brown hair, and a confident demeanor. He has a slightly androgynous quality that many people find attractive. He is of average build, not overtly muscular or especially skinny.
Ral usually wears fashionable clothing in somewhat archaic styles. (At the right kind of party he might even wear a cape.) He favors light colors such as white and yellow with a dash of gray for contrast.

Personality: Ral is a decadent noble who misspent most of his youth and is now having to actually work for a change; since the Empire has started shutting down Onderon's business and meddling in the planet's interests, Ral has been forced into making new investments, figuring out under-the-table business schemes, and developing networks of disreputable contacts to keep his income flowing.
Ral tends to be easygoing by nature. He isn't a despotic villain who takes pleasure in others' suffering, but he's had his share of poor judgment and he isn't above occasionally vindictively hanging someone out to dry if he feels it's deserved.
He can be quite animated, charming, and persuasive, and has many stories (some fabricated) with which to engage listeners.
He rarely lets his temper show; instead he files away grievances to settle later.
He dislikes children but enjoys many kinds of low-maintenance pets. He is a connoisseur and likes fine food and drink, though he occasionally "slums it" and takes in local cuisine and street life for the thrill.
Basically he's a gentrifying rich tourist party boy a@&&!@!.
