At the funeral, Cai Fen takes a brief moment to grieve and then steps up to speak of Bort’s kindness and willingness to see the best in people around him. He relays, to those who have not heard it yet, the story of how Bort encountered Pharasma and cleverly escaped her clutches.

He stays at the Feedmill for the next few days, helping with the dinner rush. Though he turns in early, as is his want, he has a difficult time sleeping, and can be found in the common room or wandering Etran’s folly under the light of the stars. The shadows under his eyes grow deeper with every passing night.

Eventually, he says his farewells to his companions and quietly packs his things. He travels to the coast of Avistan and charters passage on a merchantman back to Tien Xia. He is greeted warmly by his parents and siblings upon returning to his ancestral home, where he stays for many months, working feverishly into the night on his novel.

Finally, the world joyously receives his masterpiece – “The Adventures of the Great Detective Smokehouse H’loms and his incompetent sidekick Doctor Wat Sun.” The book also includes other colorful and comic characters, such as a stalwart knight who is always one step behind, a leshie who only speaks in limericks, an elf that communicates entirely through gestures, and their adorable pet rat, Mr. Squeakers.

Cai Fen uses the proceeds from the novel to purchase a plot of land, supplementing his writing income with beekeeping. He also constructs a small shrine to Tsukiyo for the benefit of the town and stops by weekly to worship there. Stories begin to spread among the locals of a quiet, humble man dressed in simple white robes who can be seen wandering under the light of the moon, and who is always happy to guide a traveler, or soothe a troubled soul with a kind word and a jar of honey.

Cai Fen walks over to Ulf and glares as he slaps the coins out of Ulf's hands.

Do not touch the plaguestone, fool. It is tainted by death.

He explains that the alchemist Vilree sought to extract revenge on the town by sealing a plague within the stone, and was moments from unleashing it.

Yah!

Cai Fen urges his horse to make one final sprint and bears down on the drudge, his war flail weaving deadly arcs in the air in time with the hoofbeats.

Cai Fen mounts up.

To the Plaguestone! Go, Mr. Squeakers the 3rd, fly like the wind!

Cai Fen opens his eyes and screams, ready to leap into action, only to find the room peaceful. Fight, fall, wake up, repeat. Is the world looking a little washed out? He giggles involuntarily.

Cai Fen's confidence in his logical deduction gives him just the boost he needs to stay alive.

Cai Fen slowly lifts his head from the floor.

Urk... Called it.

He then falls back unconscious.

Even entangled, Cai Fen rapidly closes the distance with Vilree and delivers a powerful blow with his war flail. He then returns to the relative safety of the smoke cover.

The air grows still as Cai Fen draws a breath and lets forth a battle cry that shakes the cavern. Taking a hand off his war flail he closes with the creature and shoves with all its might, aiming to push it off its precarious position and down into the rapids below

He then chokes up on his war flail again.

Bort showed me friendship and great kindness. You seem to understand the concept of revenge, so how is this for irony: my vengeance on you will be to stop your vengeance on Etran's Folly.

I have great concern... no enough foolishness.

Cai Fen drops his goofy accent and mannerisms.

Vilree's plan is nearly complete. The diagram we found earlier shows how the alchemical plague can be loaded into the Plaguestone. The journal we found confirms that this has already happened. We need to stop Vilree and find that ring she mentioned before she has a chance to trigger the stone and spread another plague through Etran's Folly. I only hope that we are not too late, and that she hasn't already sent one of her pet orcs or monsters to finish the job.

Cai Fen takes one of the lesser healing potions. Before entering, he will drink the fire mutagen the group found earlier.

Shizuru grant them light. Pharasma, grant them peace.

Cai Fen will join Kyrie in a quick prayer over the shambling monstrosity, then search the area.

This appears to be yet another laboratory...

Cai Fen darts in and out, going for another trip on the Amalgam.

While the creature is distracted tearing the Biloko to shreds, Cai Fen darts in and tries to send it back down to the ground before retreating to safety.

Cai Fen darts in, elegantly snapping his war flail to loop around one of the creature's legs and pulling. He then retreats.

Cai Fen assesses the situation carefully.

Cai Fen takes out his war flail and attempts push past drudge in front of him, following his maneuver with a strike from his flail.

Pass Through, Acrobatics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14 If this succeeds, which I doubt, the target becomes flat footed to Cai, he will move next to Kyrie, and I will deal 2 extra panache damage on my followup strike.

Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

Cai Fen rewards the flailing drudge with fist straight to the face.

Trigger: An enemy misses Cai Fen by 10 or more, or rolls a natural 1 on an attack. Cai Fen must have performed confident finish on his last turn or must have panache (which he loses).

Feeling betrayed, Cai Fen changes tactics, grabbing not the rat but the cauldron it is hiding under, turning it over, and slamming it down on top of the creature in the hopes of trapping it.

I'll take my banked athletics roll and some interact/manipulate actions to make this happen

Oh buddy, I missed you so much! Says Cai Fen tearfully as he scoops up the rat and gives it a great big hug.

We should check the wooden door. I have great concern something might ambush us from behind if we do not.

Cai Fen does not want the stone mutagen. Maybe Kyrie might be interested?

Cai Fen contemplates drinking the fire mutagen before he heads down but decides to hold off. He does a few quick stretches to warm up and signals that he is ready to proceed.

Vile little creatures. says Cai Fen as he cleans gremlin brains off his war flail. Looks like another laboratory. Perhaps there might be something of use?

He glances around the room.

Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

Cai Fen chokes up on his war flail, steps into flank with Ina, and strikes at the acid-spewing gremlin!

Cai Fen shoves the cauldron near him straight toward the nearest creature (#4).

The fumes hit his nose with their relentless assault and he sneezes electricity (2,4)!

Cai Fen takes the proffered vial.

I have great curiosity about who keeps dedicating and building statues, murals, and paintings to this woman.

Cai Fen crosses his arms and eyes the homuunculus.

Oh sure. They pretend to act cute. They roll over and ask for pets and belly scratches. Next thing you know - BOOM!

He narrows his eyes at the creature.

I'm on to you.

Cai Fen reflexively grabs at the creature as it tries to fly past him!

Cai Fen moves forward and attempts to kick the door open!

If G'nak is not interested in doing research, Cai Fen mentally prepares himself and lines up by the eastern door.

Cai Fen darts in to flank with Ina and performs a Rebounding Strike with his war flail.

Don't tempt me. Cai replies, though some of his typical joviality is begging to leech into his tone.

Cai Fen accepts the potion of invisibility.

When assaulting a fortress, securing the high ground is key. Let us have alertness for any nasty surprises.

Cai Fen votes for second floor. Also checking for traps might be a good idea.

Cai Fen absently scratches behind Ina's ears and rests his aching shoulder. Visions of fire briefly pop into his head and he quietly shudders, realizing that he had another close call.

I have many thoughts about this plan we just executed, but it was really Marula who put it best a few days ago:

Seeing the bulk of the enemies retreat, Cai Fen rushes out from cover. Taking war flail in hand, he strikes the hulking barbarian.

Arrows fall around Cai Fen as he springs back up like nothing happened. He does however glare at the Orc on the tower for trying to pin him to the ground before he even got a chance to rise. Unsporting.

He throws another blow toward the swarming orcs (targeting #6)

Strike: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26 vs Flat Footed. Eat crit.

He then retreats behind the palisade to get away from the pesky archer and take stock of the situation.

The gate is unbarred friends! Cai Fen shouts to his companions on the other side. Just pull!

He his attention to the clumsy Orc that ran into his fist a second ago (Orc 4) and follows up his riposte with a solid strike.

He remembers he has an arrow in his shoulder and rips it out!

Turning to the Orcs he shouts, Come on fools, if you dare!

Cai Fen raises his hands and shoves the bars on the gate, trying to shift two at a time, just as he does with the tables at the Feedmill!

Hearing his friend in danger, Cai Fen nearly runs up the palisade!

Athletics, Climb: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30 That's 15 feet of movement, enough to get me 5 feet up and 10 feet down

He lets go of the palisade on the other side and lands gently on the grass. Free action - release, fall 5 feet.

Looking around he sees a veritable horde of Orcs and he rushes to Marula's side, striking one of the orcs flanking it. Stride, strike.
