Something else to keep an eye on- The gibbering madmen that gave us the silent CoC movie are making progress on their adaptation of The Whisperer in Darkness. This time it's a talkie!

Wow- ninja'd.

Right, but nothing in the 3.5 Monster Manual is open content.

Paizo (and other companies re-using WotC open content / OGL) are using the SRD as their source. Not the specific book that the content was published in (usually). Everything in the SRD is open.

The monsters in the Pathfinder Bestiary came from the SRD, another OGL source, or from Paizo directly.

What everyone else said, plus kudos to Vic, Gary and everyone keeping the machinery running in the background.

Also, thanks to Lisa, Erik and all the Paizoians for hosting the whole shindig in the first place.

I had a lot of fun coming up with (and throwing away) items. The contest is what I needed to get the creative juices going again.

Thanks!

Excellent stuff. I laughed out loud at the Hruggek, Kurtulmak, Vaprak part.

It's pretty faithful, if memory serves. I don't have a copy of the original, but I certainly lost some characters to that meatgrinder back then.

Spoiler:
The green slime tapestry and the devil of annihilation are still there at least.

WotC did a 3.5 conversion that is available for free.

That should be a pretty good starting point.

Disqualified! That's just a blatant rip-off of those old 1e UA Anything Items. For shame.

Nightingale's Tongue
Aura faint illusion; CL 3rd
Slot --; Price 300 gp; Weight --
Description

This small, pink confection is shaped like a nightingale's tongue. A nightingale's tongue allows the user to vocalize normally in an area of magical silence. Vocalizing includes typical speech, casting spells with Verbal components, the use of Perform skills that are primarily vocal (such as Perform (sing) or Perform (oratory)), and the use of Extraordinary, Spell-Like, or Supernatural abilities dependent upon vocalization or vocal Perform skills. Each tongue is use activated and is consumed when placed upon the character's own tongue (standard action, as per potion activation).

All characters both inside and out of the area of magical silence can hear the user normally, up to the typical range of the user's vocalization. The effect of a nightingale's tongue does not dispel the magical silence effect, nor grant others within the silence area the means to vocalize. The effect does not extend to musical instruments played by the user (including woodwinds), or to other activities such as clapping, walking, or ringing a chime.

When the user is not in an area of magical silence, a nightingale's tongue doubles the distance range of the user's vocalization. This doubles the range of vocal Bardic Performance and Perform skills as well. Spells cast by the user are unaffected, including those with the [sonic] or [language-dependent] descriptors.

The effect of a nightingale's tongue lasts for 15 minutes.

Construction
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, ventriloquism; Cost 150 gp

Only problem is, I don't have the bestiary yet...so if it's not in the first two previews I don't have access to it.

All of the Bestiary critters are in the Pathfinder Reference Document. You may not be able to access it during play, but at least you can use it to prepare ahead.

Also, d20pfsrd.com has many pregenerated stat blocks of the summonable versions.

A couple of us posted apprentice level systems down in the Conversions forum.

Ninja'd by Tom, but here's my quick take:

Fast and Filthy Apprentice Rules:

1st level Multiclass characters must choose two classes to begin play. Character must qualify for both classes. One class is chosen as primary, the other secondary.

Hit Dice: At 1st character level (ChL hereafter), per primary class. At 2nd ChL, per secondary class.

BAB: If both classes give +1 BAB at 1st class level (ClL hereafter), then +1 BAB at 1st ChL, otherwise +0.

Saves: At 1st ChL, +1 cumulative to a save when that save is given a +2 at 1st ClL.

Skills: At 1st ChL, skill points per primary class. At 2nd ChL, per secondary class. All class skills from both classes are considered class skills at 1st ChL.

Class Features:
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: At 1st ChL, character gets all weapon and armor proficienies of both classes.

Spells: For each class that provides spellcasting at 1st ClL: Character gains all 0 level spell casting abilities. Character can also cast 1 1st level spell per day (no bonus spells for high ability scores). For classes that allow for a limited number of spells known, character knows 2 1st level spells. All are cast at caster level 1.

Bonus Languages: May choose from any bonus language provided by either class at 1st ChL.

Other Class Features: May choose one 1st level feature listed under Special from each class table.

Equipment: Starting money per primary class. Character gains any equipment provided via any class feature chosen at 1st ChL. Remaining class feature equipment is aquired at 2nd ChL.

Favored Class: Character's favored class bonus is applied at 1st ChL if it matches the primary class, 2nd ChL if it matches the secondary class.

At 2nd ChL: Character is required to take the same two classes that were chosen at 1st ChL. Character gains all features of both 1st level classes as per normal multiclassing rules.

This should be extensible to most any set of base classes.

I believe there was also an effort to relax the restrictions on prestige classes that use the race as a prerequisite, and hence the dwarven defender is gone while the arcane archer allows half-elves now. Might be wrong on this one.

I believe you're correct about the racial PrCs. I think James has mentioned that the racial pre-req for Arcane Archer may be errated out entirely.

Also, Red Wizard wasn't released in the SRD, so that one wasn't coming over in any case.

IIRC the PDF won't be ready until Dec. 9th.

It's available to subscribers only now, I believe.

Agreed. I hope that some form of the 1st level multiclass rules find their way into the APG or GMG.

I'm not sure why they were dropped on the way to 3.5. They were a nice, flavorful way to describe many multiclass concepts without changing the character's power level.

jreyst wrote:
Oh also, in case you didn't notice it, all pages have a Print this Page link in the top left area of the page. That formats the page a little better for printing in case that helps you out.

Thanks! Yeah, that's a nice feature, but I wanted to distill the statblocks down to fit several per page. I have all of the SM I creatures on one page (front and back). Nice and handy.

jreyst wrote:
We have fully statted out blocks for either all (or pretty much all) summonable creatures.

And thanks for that excellent resource, jreyst. I was going through those last night to build a printable document to have at the table. I found that many of the links from the Summon Monster spell don't lead to the summonable version of the monster. Also, the summonable Horse entry seems to be just a template.

Those entries did save me quite a bit of time, though, so thanks again!

I was hoping there were actually Pathfinder rules on the subject. Seems like an oversight if not.

James mentioned that the GameMastery Guide might include something along these lines.

Lenny H wrote:
And who actually put Baba Yaga in D&D universe?

Welcome aboard, Lenny!

Baba Yaga's Hut was detailed as an artifact in the 1st Edition Dungeon Masters Guide. An earlier version may exist as many aspects of 1e first appeared in Dragon magazine, Chainmail, and the D&D folios.

The various hags have always seemed like a Slavic influence to me.

I was kind of surprised to see d8/mid-BAB/light armor for the Summoner. I guess it's solely to allow him to buff his pet during combat and be able to take/avoid a few knocks while doing so.

The eidolon seems like a pretty powerful class feature on its own, though. The additional martial prowess might be a little too much. I think I'd prefer the Summoner to consider whether casting Magic Fang on Fang during combat is worth risking life and limb.

Maybe that's the hold-up? Jason is clearly suffering from pie deficiency. I also suspect a woeful bacon deficit.

Who could work under such conditions?

In your time, Jason.

Now, I think the gem dragons may have been Dark Sun originals. Not sure. If so, Dark Sun may have copyright to them, and DS is still owned by WotC. But, again, can something as generalized as "crystal dragon" even be copyrighted?

The Gem Dragons first appeared in Dragon #37 in an article by Arthur Collins. They've been around for a loooong time.

If they weren't specifically OGLed at some point, the specifics of those Gem Dragons still reside with WotC. Paizo could probably do different Gem Dragons, but they've expressed an interest in steering away from doing dopplegangers of WotC-owned creatures. In any case, it wouldn't make much sense for Paizo to do any primarily psionic creature until a Pathfinder psionics supplement sees daylight.

Despite my lack of interest in psionics, the Gem Dragons remain some of my favorites. Thankfully, the Psionics Handbook web enhancement featuring the Gem Dragons is still available for those that don't have access to 3.5e MMII.

Hooo boy. Well, I guess I have no choice but to add this to my still-pending GM Screen order.

Damn, that order has gotten big...

Well, shoot. I just had a post eaten by the Messageboard Monster.

The short version:

The Piasa (pie-a-saw) might make an interesting Bestiary critter. I've never seen stats for it anywhere and it follows along with Paizo's interest in using legendary creatures.

Just a thought.

Pg 6 gives the elite array as 15,14,12,11,10,8 while the Core Rulebook lists it on pg 451 as 15,14,13,12,10,8. The stat blocks for PC classed entries in the Bestiary (well Aasimar and Tiefling, at least) use the Core elite array rather than the one listed in the Bestiary.

Heh. I guess "S,M, or F" is close enough to "smurf" to change our avatars. I was wondering what on earth was smurfing on.

Rogues with Minor/Major Magic don't cast spells. They have spell-like abilities that mimic spells. They aren't require to provide V,S,M, or F components. Armor never affects a spell-like ability, even if the ability resembles an arcane spell. (pg 221 Core Rulebook)

I'd say no to rogues with Arcane Strike.

Doh! I meant to add to my post, "or switch the wild and wood elves," but I've been so busy I forgot to actually do it. :p

OK, I'm at home- sick and bored- so I dusted off some old stuff.

Wood / sylvan elves and wild / grugach elves both appeared in 1e Unearthed Arcana, which was released in '85. The first Forgotten Realms boxed set was unleashed in '87. Before that Ed Greenwood was really the only contributor to FR lore (via Dragon).

I'm not sure what to make of any of that. Take it for what it's worth.
