Well, Chi is being nice with his hugs. Normally he just bows. The Boss told me it was very important to him. I hug him back.
Frankie's innocence is still intact. Yay! That's always the first thing to go from these short-lived mortals. He still reeks of maple syrup, though...
I've been organizing more and more at the Farmtownbreach. Lots of First Worlders are arriving to check things out, and I have to lay the ground rules.
- Pranking is OK, unless it kills them. Mortals don't like that.
- Alert the patrols if you see cold-forged iron; we need to keep track of it.
- Remember the Mortals haven't figured out their purposes yet, so don't stifle them too much.
- Be wary of which animals you awaken. Some of them are meant for harvest.
The Queen and the Boss figured it out, huh? Good, I hate keeping secrets. The Boss keeps wondering about her eventual return to the Grove and meeting Queen Syntria again. The Queen of Thorns decorates the rosebed and keeps her temper in check everytime the mortals do something silly. The Boss is keeping the Queen calm. Maybe Syntria's experiment is paying off: teach the Queen of Thorns humility by using the Boss's experiences.
I fear the Wind. He's whispering into my ear or a friend's ear, like a bug digging into your bark. If you ignore it, it burrows deeper and deeper, draining you dry. If you dig it, it squirms faster and steals your attention. And when you pull it out and throw it away, the bug left its mark. He wants me to remember something I did and... I don't want to. I just want to help the Boss.
So I curl up next to her and the Queen. The tea leaves smell like comfort as the Boss drinks up from her teapot. The Queen nitpicks every blemish and error in the grove, especially if Mortal trash blew in. But the Boss does compliment the irrigation system, or the tools used, and even the teapot. All made by Mortals.
The Boss scratches me behind the ears and it reminds me I'm important. That's all I could ask for, really.

Meredith + Denair have a solution... no wait, Meredith needs 4th level spells to pull that off. So we could Power Level Meredith for 3 more levels, or...
Once we pull this guy out of the goo, we run. Let the rats scatter.
Actually, are they big enough to take half damage? Denair could just hover above the swarm and pummel it to oblivion.
Denair is the all-in-one air rescue chopper AND apache attack vehicle! Pew pew!
Denair tries to keep her grip on the man before pulling again. "So the tree was really happy about its new spot, but it was sad about the grubs and the little mole who lived near the roots. The mole was able to find a new home next to another tree, so it mostly turned out okay. A few of the satyrs were impressed with the loggers, and left a few gifts for them and their mates. Um, and they also left other gifts but the Boss warned me about talking about those kinds in front of strangers. But the next generation of loggers had a lot more fur and hooves than before."
Denair continues to yammer on as she resumes her airlifting duties.

"Okay, it's like the time those nice loggers moved a tree from some diseased puddle of... something or other." Denair carefully scoops the man up. "They dug around the roots first to give it plenty of room. Well, they missed a few roots but that's not the point. Then they slung this big harness underneath so the tree wouldn't drag across the forest floor. Some of the branches did and snapped off, but they were trying really hard!" Denair rambles a bit as she tries to get the victim to relax.

Denair notices the rats crawling out the whole. "That's a swarm of rats. Rather advanced. Why are they in a sinkhole? Are they diseased?"

Thanks to the weird lights, Denair feels a bit more confident than before. She stretches her arms down to scoop up Benedict before his rage overwhelms Antaios.

Denair thought a dryad would have sprung out at some point from the roses. It grew quickly enough, expanding from a sprout into a small patch Denair could hide in. Then she realized the thorns only moved away from her and no one else. Oh well, she enjoyed the privacy.
"Oh, hey Boss! Want to practice the Outflank manuever? I think you figured it out." Meredith nods and the two run around the roses, using the edges as target practice. Meredith thrusts her spear as Denair slams down, hitting at the same time. Meredith's timing gets closer to Denair's, and they act as one.
Meredith pauses for a bit. "Hold on, I'm exhausted. Man, this rose bush is huge. Smells nice, at least. I should make more rose water for the tea." Denair scuttles up to Meredith and lies down, and Meredith instinctively pets her fur. The Boss is a lot more calm.
"Oh jeez. Sorry Denair, I forgot to tell you. Before I met the delegate and she gave me the tea set. There was... someone told me to tell you hi. I couldn't see him. And then I got the tea, and all of this Queen of Thorns stuff made sense, and then the fey moved in and I've been dealing with that-"
Meredith catches herself. "I always feel comfortable talking to you, I sometimes ramble. Anyway. He said you knew him. He was like a whisper on the wind-" Meredith nearly jumps back as Denair suddenly springs up and grabs her arm, tightly clutching it.
"He didn't hurt you, did he? Did he talk about anyone else? Does he know-" She looks around to the bush, to the barn, to the trees. "Does he know about me?"
Denair stays at Meredith's side for the rest of the day, even when Meredith unfetters her. But the Boss doesn't understand her fear. No one does. Except for him. And that's the problem.

"Well, if you owe everyone a favor it might cancel out... Oh! Let me show you my house! It's a big oak tree, but's hollow on the inside. There's a bed made of leaves you can sleep on, and all the water you can drink, hot or cold." Her ears flutter before they flatten. "No syrup, though."

Everyone is sitting around, and they FINALLY decide to call upon the Queen for help. Of course, duh. So she nudges Meredith to talk to the grass, the wind, the birds. They all speak to her, she speaks to them, and they carry their tale to the Queen. Hopefully Meredith doesn't invoke her wrath.
Hearing about the cure does bring joy to Denair. There was fear in her mind as she heard the tales of the dying fey. "Laurel, could you... um... write down the cure? The Darkwood would love to hear more about it."And it would make a good offering.
The night is young, and most have gone to bed. Denair urges Meredith to relax and get to bed, even though the human is wide awake. The humidity is just right. The pollen smells just right. And there's a hint of persimmon in the air. Meredith's going to embarrass herself if she does this wrong.
But finally, the Queen arrives. Denair keeps her head low, and thinks about getting Meredith to bow down, but it would seem silly. Plus she may as well enjoy the Queen's dramatics and sense of flair. Bye Vonderella. Hopefully she won't be too cruel.
A feast, yes. Let the others participate, eat and drink. Denair's time to shine is now. She walks up to one of the Queen's emissaries. "We're all sorry for what happened. We have brought the person responsible. On behalf of my Boss, I present to you the cure the Humans developed to fend off the disease. Here is a copy. Hopefully we can modify it to help those of the First World. The Former Queen of Thorns and the Pathfinder Society send their thanks and well wishes."
Denair walks up to every emissary and courtier she can and reminds them of where the cure came from and who was responsible. Most of them are quite thankful. Some even mumble her name, trying to memorize their saviors. Others grumble their ounce of gratitude, warning her not to let the success go to her head. Ah, politics. One day Meredith will be fully reborn, and all of these favors will pay off.

Denair takes the moment to slip away and approach the many mourning dryads. She tells them of the cure, and tries to raise hope for those still fighting. She tells the dryads about her incredible journeys and describes the outside world to them. She's lucky, and she knows it. "They take it for granted- sailing across the ocean, walking for miles into unknown territory. We're chained to our Homes. But I'll give you the ability to project yourself. Using only words."

Denair pulls out several leaves, stained with ink. Some have drawings, some have words on them. All of them describe the many journeys and locals she's visited. "Read the words, look at the drawings, and let your mind take you there. It's better than the real thing. I'll write as much as I can, and bring more here. The Boss... she still doesn't know what I've been doing with all of those lessons she's taught me."

Denair sits next to Meredith and stews. But as everyone mentions the basin, she finally gets some clarity and grabs some cloth to wrap around her wooden hands. She gathers the courage to fly over and grab it.
It's quite beautiful, with a style and craftsmanship no one could make here. Holding the basin, she wonders what Isandrea was thinking when she made this cursed artifact.
Revenge. She must have been furious at the humans in Falcon's Hollows. So she built this. And Vondrella's father drank from this. And she lost her parents and the town abandoned her. So she took her revenge. And now Denair knows the fey of Darkmoon Wood are infected. Denair realizes she's about to enter a cycle.
She picks up the basin, lowers it at Meredith's feet, drains the water near an empty patch in the forest, and asks Annea to burn the patch.
And then she falls to her knees and cries, barking, whining and wailing. Meredith gives her a solid hug to comfort her. It takes her some time, but she finally calms down enough. to speak to Vonderella.
"Laurel said she was a child when your parents died. Her mother told her the tale. Do you know what she's doing now? She and Lady Cirthana are trying to cure the infected right now. You said no one helped. A cleric of Iomedae and the town healer- they care." She points a wooden paw. "I'm sorry no one cared when you needed help, but there are people now who care. And they might die trying to fix the disease you spread."
"The infected- they are parents. If they don't recover, their children will be orphaned, like you were. But this time, Falcon's Hollow is trying to help. You wouldn't be in a crazy death cult if they tried to help your parents. So, do you want more broken people, or do you want to see the good Falcon's Hollow can offer?"
I'm defending humans. She looks at Frankie's hands, she looks up at Meredith (who smiles) and she looks to Vonderella. Denair breathes a sigh of clarity, and she calms herself.

Of course they've heard rumors about the Queen's return. Now they want to act nice. Denair decides to be alone during her rest. She has enough to worry about without courtiers weaving a political web.
Denair is glad to see Meredith taking charge. She's also glad to see people who are tune with the land, not chopping it down. "Oh... um... hi. If you know which fey live in this forest and would be receptive to guests that would help out a lot too!"

But she notices Meredith is getting wound up again. Sure, Denair could spot in the darkness but everyone else would be going blind. Or they would expose themselves to ambush by lighting torches. Denair puts her hand on the Boss's shoulder to calm her down.
"Boss, maybe we could all use some rest." She takes a glance at Frankie, knowing those boils are just going to get worse. But there's no point to rushing. "We'll get ready in the morning, okay?"
