Hi James,

Welcome back. I want to say I really appreciate you opening up the thread again, even though I certainly respected your need to close it.

On to the question.

Have you read much Joe Hill? I just finished NOS4A2, and liked the references to King's work. Do you have a suggestion for a good second Hill book?

Thanks again.

It was intentional. They goal was to get the football audience to stick around for the show, then hopefully follow when they moved it to Thursday. Thursday they will see if it worked.

And probably in part that people that like McFarland's shows are used to tuning in on Sundays. They couldn't leave it on there because a large part of their Sunday lineup returns there on October 1.

Yeah it sucks but it happens to every single one of them. I'm honestly surprised no one has tried to use a mod deleting a post or locking a thread as evidence in a rules argument yet.

Well, if the Pathfinder Design Team answered FAQs more than once a month or so, then people wouldnt have to.

Yes, it's true that answering questions doesnt directly make them money, as opposed to new products, but supporting older products in important.

51 FAQ requests, 3 years and not answered.

There's others.

I agree with you in part. Ultimately the GM just needs to make a decision. Jacobs used to answer rules questions with the caveat that it was how he would rule. Then one day the design team answered a rules question differently and a poster went on a rampage posting in multiple places that Paizo needed to get its house in order and James got called into the boss to explain himself. That's when he stopped answering rules questions. And that's why we can't have nice things.

Because I did that recently.

Nah. That's a simple mistake. Like the time I started a frogamoth an extra 60' closer to the PCs, then misread the cutting your way out of its stomach rules, and TPK'd a party...

Hi James,

Have you had a chance to poke your head in on the results of the Strange Aeons AP, and read any of the final product?

I have to say I am really enjoying it. Volume 3, the one with lots of Dreamlands stuff is particularly great. As much as I would have loved to have you develop it, you being such a huge mythos fan and scholar, I am personally still very happy with the results.

As always, thank you for being a part of this thread. I would have understood completely if you had decided to let it go, because I can imagine in some way the need to be on top of it likely adds some stress to you, but I, for one, find it one of my favorite spots on the internet.

I don't know if it'd still be the Flash I love if Barry figured out he can be an idiot. I'm starting to wonder if the writers are smarter than I think, and his low wisdom is a character weakness intentionally.

That said, when I saw another f@&$king speedster as a villain in the first episode, I got concerned.

So, Mr. Schneider!

I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed In Search of Sanity! What were your influences in coming up with the idea?

Let's hear about your campaign. Maybe someone can throw some ideas your way.

The PCs are part of an outcast prince's attempt to start his own country on a different continent. So far they've founded two towns and befriended both a tribe of kobolds and a nest of phase spiders. There is an overarching plot involving demons and a Lamashtu cult, but the last session before the break developed that, so I'm mostly looking for ideas for interesting things to have them do while I try to get my brain back in GM mode.

The PCs all work for the fledgling government. The indigenous population is short on core races. Except gnomes. Those guys pop up everywhere.

If that summary isn't helpful, I'll be glad to answer any questions anyone has.

How about do a Roanoke Colony thing. The party gets word that when a messenger went to one of the towns it was entirely empty. Everyone had disappeared without a trace.

Diego is right, I guess. You'd have to research the spell Call Cow.

Edit: fixed a punctuation error.

It's not a cow, but if I remember right in the old boxed mega-adventure Night Below, there was a magical statute that summoned a roasted pig once per day. Best item ever.

Does this mean that in a country like Cheliax, the majority of the population would pay lip-service to Asmodeus, perhaps event attend church, without being evil themselves?
That's pretty much exactly what it means. Paying lip-service to a deity does not require faith in that deity, and in fact if you're paying lip-service, that more or less means you do NOT have faith in that deity. You're just afraid of the repercussions of appearing non-faithful, or trying to avoid causing problems, or deliberately being deceitful, etc.

Hi James!

That made me think of a follow up question. How does Pharasma view such lip service? Does it matter that in a place like Cheliax one would be heavily influenced to pay lip service whether they wanted to do so or not? In short does intent make a difference?

Thank you!

Good Morning James!

Here are a couple of off the cuff questions if you don't mind.

Do you have a favorite type (subgenre, style etc.) of horror?

Have you ever read The Talisman by Stephen King? Did you enjoy it? It strikes me as interesting that it could be fit into the urban fantasy genre before that was a category. Making him a pioneer of sorts.

Thanks again, and have a great rest of your week!

Oh, Barry. You magnificent, lovable idiot.

I do wonder how entertaining movies and television would be if the heroes only acted on perfect logic, instead of giving into emotion and human feeling. I imagine kinda boring.

A good friend of mine who had never really GM'd before (only played) tried to run a MERP (Middle Earth Role Playing) game. He decided to run a campaign where we were a decoy group to the Fellowship, meant to distract the agents of Sauron. So basically we were following the books. Not really original, but there you go. I was fine with that. So we started character creation and no one wanted to play the hobbit, so I volunteered. MERP was a simplified version of Rolemaster, which was a pretty complicated table based system with extensive hit charts.

I started to make my hobbit, and chose the best items I could under the circumstances. Took some decent skills in hand axe and sling, making him able to somewhat contribute in combat, along with the required sneaking skills.

That's where the problem starts. The GM looked over my character sheet, and says that hobbits in the books only use daggers and throw rocks, so that's all I could do. Because of how armor reduced damage I was then completely useless in a fight. Keep in mind the humans weren't required to only use the weapons from the books.

I did go along because he was so new to GMing and he was my friend, but I have to say I was not dismayed when the game got derailed when our fighter broke his leg own with a critical fumble with his flail in the 1st combat.

Eh...if we are going for "Awesome ways to murder Ramsey", my vote is death via Giant punting.

Roose's death was the most "shocking" moment of the ep for me, although I knew it was coming this season and since season 4 they have been building up his inevitable betrayal. I don't think Roose was stupid exactly, but mostly far to overconfident; Roose has, probably since Ramsay could barely walk, alternated between cutting Ramsay down and making him feel insignificant, and then building him back up. I think he was just confident that he was emotionally in a place where the idea of him betraying him just was inconceivable.

I like that the series seems on trajectory to finish, and all that entails, but I do worry they are rushing a bit too much. Tyrion's decision to free the dragons or Davo's being all pro Jon Snow resurrection seemed kind of sudden, and I am not really sure why Davos in particular was so gung-ho about that. There really wasn't a whole lot of scenes last year with those two, nor much to establish why Jon is snow important.

For a show rushing through things, could have used more development there, and you certainly could have cut "random guy getting killed by Frankengregor" or the really drawn out "Ramsay deals with Walda" situation in this episode to build upon that more.

Particularly since in the books, Davos is nowhere near there at the time John dies. I mean, I know they are modifying and condensing storylines (and I am fine with that), but sometimes the choices they make in doing so really puzzle me.

Although for what it is worth, the director and, I think, one of the actors has denied the rumor that the reshoots were aimed at more humor. I read a transcript of one of the director's tweets today that implied they just gave him expanded budget for upping some of the action shots. Considering it seems to have some rather optimistic word of mouth already, I kinda believe him. They may be hoping that if it can pull out a solid critic and consumer rating that it will hold folks over to continue to watch despite BvS.

Thanks for collecting that data above Archmagi. It's cool to have it all in one place! That said, one of the things I find interesting is that Deadpool was made for only about 48 mil per IMDb. That is a HUGE profit margin compared to BvS quarter of a billion cost. Of course, I imagine that the marketing costs aren't figured into the 48, either.

I messed around with this for a bit to get the feel, then tried a serious play through. I went probably 6-10 missions with only 2 deaths. Then it ramped up and the last 2 missions I've lost 2-3 squad member in each. Ouch.

I was DMing the Night Below boxed set for 2nd edition D&D, and there was a place in town where you could purchase dogs. All the PCs bought one, and took them adventuring. Eventually one of the dogs died, and my ex-wife, who was playing, rage-quit the session and made me sleep on the couch. No, ah, snuggling, for like a week either.

Wasn't even her character's dog, either.

Yeah, it struck me as odd that he didn't really have any sort of reaction post the event itself. Does he blame Leia in part, for what happened? Does he consider his life debt to Han over and will he go home to Kashhyk now? If he was a real character, and not a walking carpet that yowls occasionally, these sorts of things might be explored.

Instead he's just going to follow Rey around, for no reason, apparently.

They did show him mourning right before R2 wakes up.

Hmmm, speaking of which, he'd been shut down for years and only wakes when Rey is nearby....

As to Captain Pharasma, I noticed on my second viewing, that twice she mentioned her "division." I think she's in charge of a division responsible for maintaining storm trooper "mental conditioning." So while her whole division may have special dispensation, she is only captain of one division. That explains her rank.

I also noticed that Ren is very clearly only playing with Finn. He doesn't take him seriously at all. Same with Rey at 1st. She spends most of the 1st part of the fight running.

Lastly. I feel really bad for Chewbacca. Got me a bit teary thinking about it.

The porn industry is dying. The only reason it has moderately continued to be successful is because the company that owns Pornhub owns a significant number of the major production studios. It, in essence, pirates itself and survives on ad revinue. Actors have seen their pay plummet.

One of the reasons that film companies have seen blockbuster flops happen more frequently in the last few years is because they took the exact approach you suggest with directors. For decades, directors were expected to prove themselves on smaller projects prior to being given the reigns of a large, costly project. When that paradigm shifted you ended up with large productions that were over budget and lower quality. There was an article about this in Variety just the other day.

Being able to make a 2 minute YouTube video is absolutely nothing like major film production. You insist on making absolutely horrible analogies. That's why the mockery. Frankly, though, your point boils down to nationalistic chest pounding, combined with an unsurprising positive self-appraisal of your own opinions and abilities.
