Ludger is well pleased with the idea of being paid well so doesn’t push the issue.

Once the cargo is placed, Ludger rests his arms on the gunwales and is content to watch the scenery go by. If asked to help with something on the barge he will but otherwise he loafs during the voyage.

Somehow Axel's pitch for more money comes off as incredibly crass, even to himself. Rutger seems offended by him for a moment until Magda's suggestion distracts him.

"Oh! That does make sense. I hadn't thought of that." He looks around at the people gathered nearby. "I think we should be good with who we have on hand, though. Something to remember for next time!"

Some of you just got a lump of money. Remember to go shopping if you feel like you need something before we move on!

"Our group can help you out. The Halfling is a wonderful doktor. Axel, despite uh, being a bit rough around the edges Axel is clever and quick, and I am Ludger Braunlich. You've probably heard the stories about me, slaying greenskins and zombies, fighting crocs single-handidly, an expert on the river, etc., etc." Ludger looks at Rutger hopefully to see if he recognizes Ludger's name.

"So, what's the job pay? Now, don't be stingy considering the skills we bring to the table, eh..."

Ludger will attempt to Haggle to see if they can get more money for the work.

Shopping
Ludger will hunt for a hand weapon and finds what seems like a decent sword. The standard price is 20 shillings for a sword so Ludger will pay that from his new earning. Not haggling as can't really afford to pay more than 20 shillings. That takes Ludger back down to 6 shillings and some pennies.

A bit of setting stuff in relation to what Magda was saying: the comments about treating everyone were well-taken. Happily here, a Kislevite probably wouldn't meet massive prejudice in this part of the Empire anyway. Kislev is very distant from here, but it is a known area that is at least on the same side of the 'Chaos is bad' front the Empire tries to uphold.

The foreigner thanks Magda for her assistance as she bandages up his sword wound. He seems quite embarrassed about being wounded by his own weapon, although a subdued persona doesn't seem to fit the man. As he starts to converse, you get the strong impression that his someday tale about this encounter will involve a crocodile at least twice as big.

His Reikspiel is heavily accented, but understandable. "Thank you for rescuing me! When Dafa told me to come to this place, I doubt that being eaten by that thing was what he had in mind for me. On the other hand...many of the things he said were very odd."

”Who’s Dafa? Is the Ice Queen as beautiful as they say? Do people really ride bears? Did you see the way I drove away that croc that was about to eat you?” Ludger is almost babbling with excitement this being the first Kislevite he’s ever met.

I believe Ludger would retain his Advantage for that attack, which should easily put him over the 'hit' zone. Without running the math closely, it would do 8-10 Wounds which wouldn't be enough to take out the crocodile, but Ludger gets a small victory there.

With the crocodile in retreat and the help of those on the barge, Ludger is easily able to retrieve the riverman and get him up on deck. He managed to avoid being bitten by the monstrous beast, but the wound from his own sabre is bleeding profusely. No actual Bleeding conditions. He's really just missing a bunch of wounds and will shake off the Stunned Condition on his own before long.

As recovery efforts continue, Captain Fein bellows out over the ship. "Well done men! You're all heroes today. We'll have an extra coin for everyone when we make port."

The cheers from that announcement are cut off as he motions for silence on the deck. "But! There was foul sorcery involved. You all saw it. We have a witch on my ship..."

”A WITCH BOSS?!?’ Ludger says amazed. ”I didn’t see no sign of witchery boss but of course I was awful busy smashing that croc single-handily. Let me tell you that lizard had some big teeth…” Ludger prattles on like that trying to get the attention focused on him instead of his companion because he was pretty sure that Axel had used witchcraft but Ludger sticks by his friends even if they are soul-cursed, filthy warp spawned witches.

dice=Crocodile Weapon Skill vs Ludger 40]1d100

The crocodile fights back against Ludger furiously but he easily fends off the attack. Ludger, the attack wasn't even close this time but remember to specify whether you are using Melee or Dodge for your attack on these differently-sized creatures. Ludger goes up to +4 Advantage. This is the sort of area where Advantage starts becoming silly. We'll see how things go. As a note, I missed 3 crit-based Wounds from Axel earlier. The crocodile's total Wounds taken should be 15.

** spoiler omitted **

Everyone can act!

I did completely forget about the negative modifier to Melee defense because of the size difference so Ludger will be using Dodge (skill of 40).

Ludger continues to whack the crocodile, trying to press he’s advantage. Hopefully this critter will give up soon, or die…either is good, Ludger thinks as he whacks.
Ludger Attack (58): 1d100 ⇒ 43 With Advantage that is a SL+5 and combined with the bad croc roll is a SL difference of 9. So Ludger hits for 17 wounds minus 5 toughness and 1 armor for a total of 11 more wounds inflicted. And Ludger now has +5 Advantage

Ludger continues to get solid whacks against the big lizard and is feeling more and more happy with his foolish decision to fight a croc in the water.

Ludger Defense (Dodge) (40): 1d100 ⇒ 11 With Advantage that’s SL +8

Swim Check (48): 1d100 ⇒ 33

Ludger happily paddles around the croc, whacking it occasionally and dodging its sluggish attacks.

Since Ludger got his Fortune point back from the Blessing earlier in the encounter he will go ahead and use a Fortune now to avoid being fish food.

Ludger's Reroll for Defense (58): 1d100 ⇒ 7 I think that’s a SL +6 including Ludger’s Advantage and thus much better than his scaly friend.

Ludger is surprisingly nimble (or incredibly lucky) in the water and managed to jam his fingers into the one of the eye sockets of the river monster which startled the massive critter enough that he missed biting into Ludger’s delicious flesh.

Ludger should be at +2 Advantage now

After already whacking the gigantic once with his boat hook and then blocking its attack, Ludger is feeling quite confident as he attacks the croc another time. Maybe it is true that the gods look out for the stupid.

Ludger’s Attack (58): 1d100 ⇒ 5Well, that’s a good roll. Even with the croc’s decent roll, Ludger should be at SL +5 overall including his Advantage and subtracting the SL 2 for the croc. That’d be 13 wounds minus 5 for toughness and 1 for armor for 7 more wounds and Ludger goes to +3 Advantage.

”Take that you filthy beast!” Ludger shouts as he strikes the big lizard yet again. He has to force himself to not look back to the boat to see if everyone is impressed by his heroism. Concentrate on the croc and then flex.

Swim Check (48): 1d100 ⇒ 17
Ludger continues splashing happily along in the river, the thought of possible drowning never occurring to him.

Shaking his head, embarrassed by his father’s behavior, Ludger thinks I really hate coming home.

Ludger then thanks Axel and Magda for standing by him and apologizes to Magda about his earlier remark…”It were meant to be a joke Magda but it don’t appear that it was funny. Sorry bout that.”

Ludger hops to once Isaak gives orders to cast off, anxious to leave before his Da comes back with more men.

Alright, time to get back to this. I'm hoping that I have things figured out now and just need some momentum.

First, a quick retcon. I reread Ludger's background and this Bodo guy he's trying to scrap with wouldn't have a reason to be on the docks or under the thumb of Ludger's father. So, it isn't Bodo anymore and for the sake of time is some rando...I'll assume that Ludger's reaction is the same to since I don't want to waste more time.

The stevedore knocks aside Ludger's attack and immediately takes a swing at him.

Ludger fails to take down his foe so gives up on grappling and takes a boxing position that his friend at taught him years ago. Ludger slaps aside the man’s swing and then launches an uppercut at his chin.

Intuition Test (36+40): 1d100 ⇒ 70

Ludger's face reddens as he realizes what his drunken father is doing. He gives a signal to Magda and Axel and says "stay out of this!" as he doesn't want his new friends to get hurt.

Ludger nods at Bodo and gives him a bit of wink and then puts his head down and charges his friend trying to get him down as quick as possible. The two young men have wrestled hundreds of times as children and Ludger is hoping that they can make it look like a real fight with but with no one get seriously hurt. Ludger figures that the old-man wants to see a show...

Ludger is going to try to Grapple Bodo. Reading the rules it looks like it starts with a regular melee test but instead of doing damage if you hit you are successfully grappled with your opponent.

I’m thinking our fearless GM is busy in RL as he’s not posted for a few days in the game i run and he normally is one of the most active posters.

Ludger’s dad is the boss of one of the gangs of stevedores so he basically claims ownership of a small part of the very large docks. There’s about a dozen stevedores in the Braunlich gang, mostly siblings or cousins of Ludger. Ludger is the only one in the immediate family that left the gang. Ludger and Meik have always hated each other going back to childhood. Neither remembers the original reason for their feud but both Ludger and Meik are excellent at holding onto grudges. Since they are ‘family’ neither would kill the other but hurting each other is acceptable. Meik ‘accidentally’ broke Ludger’s nose when they were teens when Meik let go of a box the two were trying to load onto a barge. A couple of years later, Ludger ‘accidentally’ gave Meik a concussion by ‘slipping’ on a wet ladder and knocking Meik off the ladder causing him to fall headfirst into a ship’s hold.

Ludger ambles over to the two men trying to look confident. ”How’s tricks Tim? Any good scores?”. Ludger sneers at Meik but doesn’t say anything to him. Ludger pales hearing his Da is on the way but speaks with false bravado, ”Oh, great, Da is coming here. I was just about to go see him to say hello.”. You’ve killed zombies, you can handle talking to the old man, Ludger tells himself. However a little voice in his head whispers, zombies are nothing compared to Da.

Axel subtly points these facts out to Ludger.

Both unsettling and creepy... what's happening here?, he mutters to them both.

”Oh crud...family. Don’t think I mentioned it but my family, well my Da, runs one of the bigger gangs on the docks. He weren’t too happy when I took up the wanderer life instead of staying on the docks. Wasn’t planning on coming back here until I was a success so I could show the old man, but now look at me, just a common deck hand on an ordinary boat, back where I started. I guess I better see what they want. It’s probably not going to be good though...” With that, Ludger starts down the gangway, midway he turns back to Magda and calls, ”let me know if you got any poison in your bag, I may need it.” Head hung low, Ludger makes his way to the men on the docks.

Ludger shares the gossip about Stimmigen with Axel and Magda. ”Ain’t that Stimmigen place near the last spot that the ship was seen? That’s too, uhm, what’s the word...coincidental for my comfort. With the zombies here and that scary guy in Stimmigen it sure seems like there’s a connection.”

Two topics of discussion:

First, there's one more thing I want to have happen in-game before we start recruiting again, but that makes it a good time to ask what direction the party wants to take the campaign.

When we started, part of the idea was to have a less-than-legal campaign focusing on river travel. I think we're doing a decent job of that so far. Is everyone still happy with that general theme? It would be good to confirm that before we start inviting more players on.

-----------

Second, my assumption was that the party would just take the notes back to Grunburg and hand them over to Lutz and the Greater Reik Trading Company. I was thinking you get back to Grunburg and have Downtime while Lutz sorts out the next step.

You definitely don't have to do that though. Axel's recent post in Gameplay alerted me to the notion that you could just try to find the Earl of Harwich on your own. See the less-than-legal theme above.

If you want to try going that direction, you can. Just vanish before or after arriving at Grunburg, find an alternate means of river travel and use the information you have on hand to try to locate the ship & its rumored treasures yourselves.

One thing you might consider if we go this "even less legal" path is Marven's compass he showed you during the meeting with Lutz. It was supposed to be useful in tracking down the wreck once you get close enough. You could either try to acquire it or leave it in the hands of the Greater Reik Trading Company.

Ludger would vote to stick with the plan figuring that the 3 of them alone aren't qualified to chase down the EoH without help

Since Ludger slept while everyone else was working in the zombie house, he finds himself with energy and nothing specific to do. He does know that he needs to get off the Sunfish before Krieger has him swab the decks. Ludger sees his friends to their bunks and then hops off the boat.

I wonder if I can find out anything about the big guy that killed that tavern owner, Ludger thinks as he begins walking the familiar streets of his hometown. He decides to see if the coach companies brought in some guy that made them feel uncomfortable in the last couple of weeks. To do that, Ludger heads to a tavern that he knows of where the off-duty coachmen tend to hangout. Buying an ale he edges into the coachmen’s group at the bar and listens closely, laughs at their ‘funny’ stories and agrees with them when they complain about their bosses. After a while he casually mentions that he heard there’s a necromancer in town now and that he’d have come in by coach recently. Ludger asks his new ‘friends’ if they ”remember a big guy who kept his face covered and was downright scary riding with any of you lately...”

After resting for a little while, Ludger wakes to find the researchers still hard at work. Ludger listens in to the conversation and when Achill finishes says, "Wait a moment! Weren't were supposed to find where the Harwich was last seen so, uh, what's his name...Lutz! So Lutz can use his odd little compass and we can get the treasure? We just need to take all of this stuff to Lutz right?"

”This rekilling the dead has me worn out. I think I need to get some rest. Someone figure out a watch schedule and wake me when it’s my turn.” With that said, Ludger makes a nest the best he can in a corner of the room and settles down for a nap.

If you guys have questions about what you can roll, let me know.

I do...so Achill is going thru the papers and assuming that Magda and Sandra are helping since they can read. Axel and I have searched the house and didn't find anything. I'm not sure what Ludger could do to help the search. I'm wondering if Axel and Ludger should do something else while the house is being searched. Maybe we should see if anyone in the neighborhood heard or saw something odd in the last few days??
