As always, Ludger carefully considers possible gambits before deciding on the most appropriate…

Ludger shouts at the top of his lungs, ”wake up Axel, we’ve been robbed!”. Then dressed in just his undergarments Ludger charges from the room looking for the thief. On the way out of the room, Ludger grabs a candlestick to use as a weapon.

Warhammer Game Notes & Maps

Axel, with all that shouting you'd have to be very asleep to not wake up. On the other hand, the bath was really nice and this bed is wonderful. You can make another Perception Test, this time at Very Easy (+60) to wake up while everyone else is acting in this psuedo-initiative turn we're in.

Hans had gotten up and put on his trousers. He had been robbed more than once before. It was a danger of being on the road, afterall. But nonetheless he readied his dagger, one hand on the sheathe and the other on the handle. If a thief decided to steal from his room then they’d find a nasty surprise. And yet he was the one surprised, when he heard the voice of one of drinking friends yelling. Without thinking he threw the door open, standing there with naught but pants and a dagger as he looked around for the thief.

As Ludger begins shouting, you hear a cry of alarm coming from nearby followed by thumping footsteps. The thief has gone to flight!

Magda still has potential to do something in the first 'round' of initiative. I'm assuming that the party wants to chase this guy, which puts us into the Pursuit rules (page 166). The starting distance is 3. The typical test in this situation would be Athletics.

* Axel is taking a -20 on any Pursuit test he makes in the first round because he is still in bed & not fully aware of the situation
* Hans has no modifiers if he wishes to pursue
* Ludger has no modifiers
* Magda's modifiers would depend on any pre-pursuit actions she takes, but the fact that she's aware of the man & not just waking up would matter.

Magda and Axel both get tripped up in their bedsheets, but Hans jumps out of his door and arrives close on the heels of the thief.

Party's best SL is +0 while the thief got -2 SL, so the distance closes from 3 to 1. Not 100% on this, but it looks like the Pursuit rules cited before result in the party all catching up to the 1 distance mark. Which is weird. It looks like the rules heavily favor the chasers in a Pursuit. I'll run it this way for now, but I'm curious about what everyone thinks in Discussion when we're done. Kind of glad we're trying this out.

Warhammer Game Notes & Maps

The thief got +4 SL. Axel got -5, Hans got +3, Ludger got -4 and Magda got +0. The thief gains 1 Distance and is at 2 now.

I'm going to say no on the second candlestick toss altogether. It would be one thing if Ludger was doing well on his Athletics tests, but the only reason he still has the thief in sight is because of the weird pursuit warping. With the chase this desperate, Ludger can't spare time to get the fallen candlestick. (I don't think the Pursuit rules really contemplate combat happening inside the system either. More to talk about later.)

The thief agilely leaps over the railing of the stairs leading down to the common room, landing on a table and leaping off without missing a step. Hans follows close on his heels, completing the maneuver without quite so much grace.

Axel & Ludger get tied up on the stairs, colliding into each other and nearly falling headlong down the steps before they catch themselves while Magda races ahead of them.

Thief Round 3 Athletics 40: 1d100 ⇒ 39 - +1 SL

What will spending a Fate do?

Warhammer Game Notes & Maps

/technical-hat: spending a Fate is way too big for this and is used for other things. Do Fortune instead.

Fortune has two use modes:
#1: reroll a failed test. Axel could do this because 38 > 30. He'd need to get +2 SL to even match Magda though.
#2: gain +1 SL on a Test. This would boost Axel from +0 SL to +1. That isn't strictly useless, but Magda got +2 SL on this Test and we only count the highest result.

Now, if Magda spent a Fortune on this...

Edit: Magda asked about her slower speed. I'd assume that the speed difference would matter as well but I'm not seeing it in the book & I want to finish this pursuit by-the-book before I start tearing up the concrete.

Warhammer Game Notes & Maps

We're still missing a roll from Ludger, but we should probably move on. The thief got +1 SL, Magda got +2 SL, Hans got -1 SL and Axel got +0 SL. Distance reduces from 2 to 1.

Magda races nimbly between the tables, making good use of her small stature to avoid the obstacles in the room. Hans and Axel follow closely behind, but aren't able to maneuver quite as well. Hans finds a mug that was placed on a side table during clean up & throws it into the back of the fleeing felon.

+2 SL +3 Strength +1 Improvised -3 Toughness = 3 Wounds for a total of 7 Wounds taken

The thief's movements are guided and practiced, as though he knew what would be in the room before he entered. As he dives through the window into the moonlit street outside, he tosses his candle back through the window.

Hans will still get to make use of that good roll he made (the 13). It's possible others might get this as well. If anyone else wants to try, make the final Pursuit test followed by a Opposed Perception Test. The Perception test takes a -20 due to darkness. Night Vision obviously helps with this, but I might allow other Talents to help you out too. If you have something you think might be relevant, go ahead & ask.

You can also make an Intuition Test to see how much you believe this guy's pleadings. Please don't assume that he's lying just because you can make the Test.
