Congrats on making the Top 32! I like this item a lot. I like channel energy as a tactic, and this is a wonderful item to have. Each aspect of it feels well crafted, to the all at once burst, to the slow recharge time requiring natural sunlight. It all really comes together. The only thing that I wasn't sold on was the price, as for that amount of money it competes with some other great items in its slot. Still, a real forerunner in the competition for me. Congrat on making the Top 32! I like this item. The first thing that had me liking it was getting a heat based darksion. This harkens back to much older versions of the games roots, and had my support. I would have liked just a little more about the differences of from darkvision, as it leaves some things up in the air. Can you see warm blooded invisible creatures, as invisibility and other illusions don't alter your temperature. Stuff like that. Spend some word count on that and the previously mentioned broken condition, and I think it's a real winner. It's got great theme and mojo to it. I look forward to seeing your map. The only large complaint I had was the aura strength. still, an overall strong entry that would just need an editing pass to pick up a few things to be print ready. Look forward to seeing your map. Congrats on making the Top 32! I like this consumable. Its fun, and has a lot of uses. I had a few issue with some of the language; I wasn't wild about the onomatopoeia, or the description of free action speaking in the first section. I also think it's a little odd that you can walk on them or through them, your choice. Also, when an electricity effect charges the cloud, how long does that effect last? If just instantaneously why say "passing through", and not just in contact with? Also, should there be a limit of one on the number of times the cloud can zap a creature in a turn to prevent everyone piling on damage? And finally, why only spells? If I have other effects that do lightning damage, should they charge the cloud? In the end, I really liked the item and can imagine lots of fun uses for it. I would want to see the language and rule tightened a bit, but in the end I would still be excited to get my hands on one of these. I think all the end case questions come from me excitedly wanting to know more about what I can do with it, which is a good sign. Good job. Looking forward to your map. Congrats on making the top 32! Now you have made 2 things for this competition that I love. Keep it up on the map round. I like this weapon's theme, and more importantly I liked that you did not use the word wolf once in the body of the item. Thats good, we get the reference, you don't need to beat us over the head with it for us to see the clever theme. You managed to resist the urge to say it's grey wolf fur, or wolf like howls. That both saves precious word count, and forced you to add in better details, like spine-chilling howls. Letting allies join in on your fun for free is nice, and give players something to do while waiting for your turn instead of drifting off. Free tactical repositioning is also always a really simple but effective power. As mentioned by others, limiting it to another ally threatening or an ally flanking the target would make it better. Some of the wording can also be tightened up a bit. Overall very strong though. Best of luck in all future rounds!
Congrats on making top 32! I like the item, as it just lends itself to cinematic moments so well. It does raise a few questions for me though. There is no action listed to direct the swarm, nor info on it this concentration might incur AoO's. It also uses different rules on when the damage is done than most similar effects. Oddly, and entire army could run through the cloud without taking damage as long as nobody is in it at the end of the wielders turn. Also, since it is the end of your turn that it does damage, given that you can direct it, and because there is no save there is basicly no way out of this for casters. I would much rather this use rules more like existing effects. The lack of any duration is also a killer. Overall, wonderful idea, great combination of concept and cinematic effect, but I feel some rules aspects were not fully realized, and that playtesting might show some munchkiny uses. I would love to see a polished version in my games though! Best of luck in all future rounds!
Congrats on making top 32! I like the item quite a bit. While its conciseness is a plus, I might have added just a bit more, as most of your entries brevity and design come from it using an already existing item type. This can earn you points for conciseness, but it also doesn't do much to illustrate superstar level design. It was risky, but it paid off. Best of luck in all future rounds!
I know that feeling well, my own item this year looked fine to me until after I submitted, then I noticed the issue in the crafting price. Eats a hole in your gut while you wait to see how many people notice and knock you for it. Clearly though many people agree that your item was great! Now go do a map and let that start giving you heartburn too. :P
First off, congrats! I am immensely happy to see your item receive some credit for being so wonderful, even if I don't get the chance to see your map entry. This was a personal favorite of mine. It was a bit flawed, but in a lovable way. Here were my thoughts about your item back when I had to be vague.
I'm going to say it... one of my favorite items has filigreeI've upvoted filigree items many times. One overused/sometimes misused visual element isn't a dealbreaker. It just means that your item will be teased mercilessly, even if it is Top 32 material. And if being a boy in grade school taught me anything, its that you tease things to show that you like them!
I don't know why we shouldn't discuss how we vote while we are voting. If the objection is that it might influence how some people vote, I chalk that up to the free marketplace of ideas working it's magic. You can't tell people they are not allowed to change their minds about the voting process. If the concern is that It might get too specific about indivigual items that cause it, I will defiantly agree, and am adding an edit to remind people to be vague until the vote is closed.

Snarking on other people's snark is called meta snarking This made me think of mecha-sharking, while was an enjoyable thought. This led me to think about Mecha-Shark, which was also enjoyable, and I like to imagine it would be great on the snark threads. This led me to think about Mecha-Shark vs. Crocosaurus, so I went to Netflix and put that on. I regret that very much. This led me to imagine the movie MECHA-SNARK vs. PRAISEOSAURUS, which I think should totally be the name of the RPGSS movie.

Before submitting an item, lets say the "Pauldrons of Ungainly Size", check to see if there are any other published items using the same item type. Following my example, I would feel quite foolish submitting my pauldrons only to find out I used a different item slot that all the other pauldrons already published. Surprisingly, a few items post cull 3 have had such an issue, and I can only assume it is because voters just are not looking into the details that far. However, I think now that we are looking at the top ~50%, these are the sorts of things voters should be paying more attention to. I know most voters have seen a lot of items multiple times now, but please make sure you are not voting based of your memory of each item and give them a thorough check each time. I also know now is when your willpower might be faltering as voters, but now is when the items need the most consideration, as the faults will not be as obvious. Happy voting!

Yet my restless spirit can not pass on until my unfinished business here is resolved. I can not move on into the sweat embrace beyond the mortal coil until I know, so I am damned to haunt these forums till then... -There are secret achievements above even Champion Voter that require superhuman endurance and dedication to obtain. -Paizo has raised the remain of Dr. B.F. Skinner from the dead, and now as a lich he continues his research into better ways of conditioning us to vote. He plans on using his finding to create a way to enslave us all to his undead will. -The reason Paizo will not give you warning of upcoming culls, or tell you when your item has been culled, is because they are taking money from big pharmaceutical conglomerates hoping to increase their sales in anti-anxiety medication.
Every so many votes, Paizo goes and inserts a random formatting error into the item submitted by the last person to have posted in the snark thread. This is why you can sometimes find new errors in items you could have sworn were fine last time you saw them. They call this the karma program and use it to teach humility to the snarkiest of us.
Somebody watched this before creating their item... and I love it. First Joke/Reference type item I have fully appreciated.
I figured after 9 hours post cull with no reported sighting that I was done for, but sometime early this morning it did finally show up. Lesson: Never look into my item until at least 24 hours have passed. It's just not worth the grey hairs and heart palpitations it gives me. As always best of luck to all still in it.
Please raise your right hand and repeat after me: "I do solemnly swear that before submitting my next RPG Superstar entry, I will take 10 seconds to open the rules for Detect Magic and see what my item's aura power should be. I also do swear to mercilessly downvote any item whose designer could not be bothered to take those 10 seconds to check such a simple aspect of item creation."
That is not a unit of measure used anywhere in the pathfinder RPG, and for an obvious reason. I intrinsically know how decimals work, but I don't want to stop play to look up how many X's are in a Y. Maybe I'm a dumb for not simply knowing that, but this dumb gets to vote on your item.
If you write your item with a rich and varied back story (you generally shouldn't, but if you feel you must) take a step back and look at your construction requirements. Understand that this is you admitting how any schmuck with these feats and spells can make this item. If you want to talk about the person who had the idea first, that's one (still kinda bad) idea. But if you are saying in your item's back story that all of these items where made long ago by one person, and never since, then why bother entering anything besides "Be that one epic dude long, long ago in a kingdom far, far away" in the construction requirements. Then take a step back and realize you are talking about either an artifact or plot maguffin, not a wondrous item, and go back to the drawing board. That said, I will promises that next RPGSS if someone enters a rich and varied back story about the great person who first made their item, only to later have their IP stolen by casters everywhere to make cheap knock offs, I will upvote your item every time.
If your item is designed specifically to let one trick ponies ignore their hard counters, then you are most likely the lowest sort of low hanging fruit.
Wow. Two goggle type items with goggle in the name... and both use different item slots... AND NEITHER ARE EYES?! *facedesk* Guess I will go with the one that selected an actual item slot in pathfinder.
Three times now I have had it immediately give me the exact same 2 items, just switching sides. I'm wondering if it's a bug, or a feature to catch bots. Just wish it wouldn't make me wait through the timer again before assuring it that my opinions haven't changed in the last few seconds. |
