I'm going to say it... one of my favorite items has filigree
I've upvoted filigree items many times. One overused/sometimes misused visual element isn't a dealbreaker. It just means that your item will be teased mercilessly, even if it is Top 32 material.

Yes, filigree. It's been used so often, especially in recent years, as part of item description that it's become something of a running joke.
I don't like your name. It is wordy and weird. Your effects are not that interesting or unique, but I still see something in you. And you are just better than the other item.

From my perspective, something like the word "filigree" as a description is lazy writing. It is like making a character in a story and saying they look like Brad Pitt or Jennifer Lawrence (as Mystique, not Katniss). Rather than paint the image of the item, it tries to cut down on the words used for description. Yes, you should not be too verbose with your descriptions, but that does not mean you can equate it to something else in order to shave off words. It is just lazy writing.

It is just lazy writing.seriously??? filigree is an actual thing, and quite descriptive/evocative of specific imagery. while i may not have used it, i don't see how it is any lazier than describing the exterior of a dwelling as "clapboard" as opposed to getting all Stephen R Donaldson about the details, acting like the reader has no shared frame of reference through which single-word terms can provide instant mental images, and spending 2,500 words describing a guy walking a block to pay a phone bill.
it's not "equating a thing to another thing" to use the word 'filigree' if it actual has filigree; it's simply calling it what it is.
The real problem is that most of the times 'filigree' was used the year that it became a meme, it was clear that the writer didn't actually know what it meant, beyond "fancy-sounding word that applies to jewelry". So many things were described as filigree that were obviously not actually filigree.

Let's say you make a ring (using this since there were not allowed for this season). Which would give you a better image in terms of description.

That beats having each of those items with filigree to have "ornamental work of fine wire formed into delicate tracery" added to the description, especially if it is a small detail. It is not necessarily "lazy," but a good way to tell the reader what the item looks like without using more words than necessary. The problem with filigree is that it was over used and used wrongly a number of years ago and became a joke. If your description is "The crown is made with gold filigree in a circle," that would be lazy. But if it were,
"The sweeping filigree of this delicate silver circlet weaves into and out of the wearer's own hair, giving it a salt-and-pepper appearance, and providing a distinguished air of wisdom to the wearer."
That would be ok. Not lazy. Just a descriptive word.

That would be the proper way to use filigree because you then move on to show and create imagery. Most items I've seen using filigree tend to just say "this filigree [item]" counting on that one word to give the item visuals.
EDIT: Replaced a word with [item]. Realized that an entry might have done that this year, so though it best to fix that so that know one thought I was pointing at their item. It was just a poor example choice word.

The year of the filigree meme, my backup item had been actual magical filigree. It was a net of magical filigree that could be applied/overlaid on a holy symbol and done neat stuff.
Probably best I left that one in the drawer.
To see filigree on items these days means either the designer never checked out the past advice/critique threads, or else was gutsy enough to put out an item that was guaranteed to get a bit of heckling from the peanut gallery.

Two more slots left in my personal Top 32. I'm willing to bet that at least half my choices won't be in the actual Top 32. In fact, there might be at least one or two items there that will make me do the Vader "NOOOOOOOOOO!!!" But we'll burn that bridge when we come to it.

Weird, I just had a couple of pairs that were total mismatches. Like, template error vs solid item. I also had multiple template errors, and one that had spelling and template errors (but is still somehow around).
It's like a reverse-cull just happened.

yeah, it's just disappointing (and again, i didn't go the filigree route myself) that a valid descriptive word results in downvotes independent of the quality of the submission, all because it's become an "inside joke" for the votingest voters in voteworld. yet those same folks believe they are voting for the best items. :/The year of the filigree meme, my backup item had been actual magical filigree. Who said they're being downvoted for the word "filigree?" I certainly didn't. I just snark about it because after you read some words time and time again, over and over, they cease to have any meaning. Just because a person snarks about an item, it doesn't follow that they're never voting for the item. I, and most voters, I'd like to think, vote for the better of each pair, whether or not they have to groan over an overused word or turn of phrase, such as "this item is prized by...".
Also, I don't believe I'm voting for the best items. Hopefully no one believes that. What you should be confident in is that you're voting for the best item out of a pair. Every time. That's what makes the system work. Sometimes I may be voting between two of the worst items in the contest, but the better of the two always gets the vote, whether or not it has filigree on it.

Yeah, I won't down vote or even think ill of an item with filigree. I didn't even notice all the filigree items in 2013 when the filigree thing got started. I would think ill of the item if the designer used it to describe the wrong thing, but even that is excusable if the item is clever and unique.

I'm at a point now where most of my paired items are about even in quality. What it typically comes down to is which one reads better.
This item is from a video game. And even if it wasn't, it's silly. Losing faith in voters if this has survived this many culls.

I agree to a point but it has the template right, the mechanics are clearly written, and the theme is actually pretty cool. I do not like that it's similar to an item form last year that was already a ripped off video game item... The problem is it usually is against inferior competition when I see it.
Yeah. Probably so. My two hot buttons are "non-serious" and "unoriginal". Either one on its own is an auto-downvote for me, and both together bugs me. :-)

The item that's competing with my item for design space has a huge design flaw. It took me forever to see it, but it's there and it breaks everything.
Granted, I can't tell the voting public what I noticed, but I now have a legitimate reason to down-vote my biggest competition. I was starting to worry I was going to have to up-vote that thing based on its merits almost every time I saw it, but it turns out it isn't as well-designed as I initially thought.
