In my world, Sorcerers don't gain their power through heritage. They start off as children who, for one reason or another, attract the attention of spirits. Their primary spirit is their guardian. All sorcerers gain familiars (wizards gain arcane bonds, but not familiars). The sorcerer's familiar starts off as a normal animal which acts as an anchor for the guardian. With feats, the familiar can become more powerful. Okay, so far, this sounds a bit like witches, the difference being that witches are Int-based scholars who have tried to duplicate by means of technique, what sorcerers are and have found malevolent entities from the nightmare plane who convince the witches the entities are guardians. Sorcerers have an exceptional connection to magic, but have a reputation for not having the best control over it. They are usually ostracized and chased out as teenagers once their nature is discovered. Typically growing up homeless, they often end up in secret societies covertly helping each other. PC sorcerers have ties to these organizations and can buy special "sorcerer only" feats representing access to various resources. Lacking formal training in magic and faced with magic they are fearful of losing control of, young sorcerers may create superstitions to help them control their magic. A rabbit's foot may have no intrinsic power, but the young sorcerer believes it does. It becomes a psychological aid which helps the sorcerer. The sorcerer is convinced the item provides magical aid. Therefore, it actually does provide benefits. People with Arcane Knowledge call these items fetishes. Many Int-based casters unfamiliar with fetishes have been driven into utter confusion over how seemingly random detritus provides obvious benefits to sorcerer spell casting. As mentioned earlier, sorcerers have an exceptional connection to magic. This connection comes with a price, however. It can warp the sorcerer, both mentally and physically. This warping is called corruption. How corruption manifests depends on the guardian's nature. Corruption provides both helpful and detrimental changes (for example, fish scales which must be regularly oiled to prevent drying out, but provide endure elements (cold)) and can get increasingly pronounced. The worse it gets, the more obvious it is (for example, the aforementioned fish scales spread over a greater percentage of the body and a fishy smell develops). Purification is possible with lengthy rituals which must be learned. Also, guardians fall into the following three main types; ancestral, primal, astral. Each of these fall into subtypes, primal falls into elemantal, draconic, and primeval.
Considering how even murder can be okay for good characters in some campaigns, has anyone ever tried to run a game with alignments your real world culture would recognize? I'm thinking it might be kinda interesting and challenging. A law enforcement officer can't just knock down doors and kill people because they look shadey. The officer would have to investigate. Then, they'd have to consider charms, polymorph, illusion, etc.
I've done my due dilligence (checked the FAQ and forum history) and could find no official rule clarification for these feats despite the question having repeatedly come up in the forums for at least a year. I'm requesting on official FAQ entry on this. How do these two feats interact wrt the bleed damage they generate?
Which table top RPG games have you played in the last two years? When you've switched to a new table top RPG in the last two years, how did you decide which new game you switched to? Which table top RPG game genres do you enjoy;
thank you very much for your response
Sorcerers often start demonstrating their powers as children or teens. But, just because they start demonstrating them at that age doesn't mean that they will pursue master of those powers. How would you create a character who has innate sorcerery powers, but never bothered to master them? Would you give them access to some feat? Perhaps that feat gave them some sort of wild magic kind of thing or the ability to cast a few cantrips?

A poster asserted in a different thread that if the US Government makes or authorizes an obligation or expenditure for which funds don't exist, then an appropriation or funds must later be made available. That seems to be wrong.As per the law referenced above, the government cannnot make or authorize an obligation or expenditure until -after- the appropriation or funds are available. In other words, it is illegal to pass a law which creates an obligation on the part of the US government until _after_ the funds/appropriation for those funds already exists.
I was watching Young Justice after reading one of the many ubiquotous alignment threads on this forum, so I was already in the mindset of thinking about alignment. What alignment is Dr. Fate? He seems like a good guy, but holding people hostage (as he does with many of the people who wear the helmet) is in no way a good act.
Superstar 2013 will start around December with R1 being around January. Now would be a good time to start warming up. This thread will be a chance to practice. I will post a different challenge each Monday. The community will (hopefully) respond to your entries with an eye towards helping you get ready for Superstar. I'm planning Superstar practice challenges to require creativity, detail, as well as mastery of game mechanics. So, some of them will be different than you've seen in previous challenges. Please post your replies in this thread. On the first line of your post, type the phrase ENTRY SEPTEMBER 16 CHALLENGE (in caps) then hit the enter key and start on a new line. Your reply will be judged by the community. Their feedback will be posted in this thread. Your entry probably will be compared to other entries, so do your best work! :-)
Just for the fun of it, here's a competition. Your character is inspired by Monty Brewster. Monty Brewster is, in my opinion, one of Richard Pryor's most awesome characters. Your character has been promised something (for example, enlightenent) if he lives by a vow of poverty for a year. The vow prohibits him from giving more than 5% to charity or gambling more than 5%. He must pay fair money for services rendered and he cannot toss money away (as in literally tossing money away). Your character is a level 2 Monk. He does not have to be a monastic aesthetic. And to complicate things even more, he must be a dwarf. Other than that, anything goes. Since he's starting his monk journey, he may be a spoiled rich kid or a pauper, a city dweller or a hermit, its up to you. So, here's the challenge. Whoever comes up with the greatest story about this character wins. Your story can take place in the present or at any time in the past. I will not choose the winner. The winner will be decided upon by your fellow forumites.
I want my next character to be a monk who is pretty much as far as possible on the opposite end of "monastic aesthetic". This guy is going to reak of the distillery, have stains on his clothes which you really don't want to guess where they came from - think of the monk from The Golden Child. If there's a trait for it, I want him to have sleight of hand. I'm thinking he'll be a Drunken Master and a Master of Many Forms (because I enjoy coming up with combat manuevers). So, can you optimize this for me? 25 point buy Must use at least one archetype (rules of the GM's table)
Much has been made of the druid's ability to tank and his ability to control the battlefield, but one thing I don't hear people discussing is the druid's ability to be an assassin. The druid gets powers like venom immunity and a thousand faces. They should make great assassins. Has anybody tried to min-max a druid for this? Or has anyone actually played a druid that focused on this?
This is chilling. The average game designer at a place like Paizo makes less than a guy working at McDonalds? A college graduate can't afford to work as a game design shop because of all the student loans. Someone without a college degree who might want to work at a game design shop is going to have financial pressure to move up the job ladder and become a fry cook. Paizo will have to start outsourcing game design to barefooted Mongolian children in Asia. The next time you see "magical script" in an illustration in the corner of a page, it might actually be saying "screw you, white guy!" PF would not be here without its designers. I don't trust anyone who likes the game 100%. Differences of opinion are part of being human. But, we wouldn't be here if we didn't see more good than bad in Paizo and its managers/staff. So, here's my appreciation and, yes, I'd like fries with that.
A simple, yet possible, solution to help keep high-level casters in check. How about simply letting other casters (as well as people appropriately trained*) have a chance to sense the casting of powerful magic (higher than 5th level) up to miles away? It may take awhile (longer than the duration of a combat) to be sensed. The reactions of the high-level people who sense this magic can be modified to suit any campaign (they may note it for future rumor mongering may come read to fight, they may just be apathetic). *'appropriately trained' does not necessarily mean 'full-caster' it may mean skilled in a relevant knowledge.
I'm going to try to post one use of illusion spells each day.
Arrow of Piercing Shadow Conjuration will create objects that are 20% real. So, what happens when you create a bunch of missiles and shoot them at a wall? Seems to me that there is only a 20% chance a shadow missile will stop at the wall. What happens if you can see a target on the other side of that wall and fire at it? The arrow gets a chance to go through the wall, then it may hit the target. If the target gets hit, it takes damage (if the target makes it's will save, the target can take only 20% of the damage).
My friends want to play a Dwarf-centric game. I want to play a Sorcerer "Illusionist" with the Dreamspun bloodline. I cannot come up with a character concept that would make such a character work if the character is a Dwarf. Dwarves are dour. Illusionists are artsy-fartsy. Please brainstorm for me a bit and toss out ideas for a Dwarven Sorcerer "Illusionist" with the Dreamspun bloodline. |
