Lark laughs, "Greenworm? That sounds fishy to me. Who'd want to ship out with some johnny-come-lately with name that shows off how inexperienced they are?"
The rogue returns to the ship, resumes his usual outfit, and reports what he learned to the others. "Anyone have any good way to penetrate illusions? Sounds like that's what we'll be facing if we have to get into it with Morton."
Lark will ask Dr. Fitch about reputable (or close to reputable) potion sellers. If there's time for another shopping trip he will look for any potions or items that might help see through illusions.
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
Since Threnody has Red Light Street covered, Lark tries the nearby taverns. He gets the names of a few other captains from Dr. Fitch and then the young rogue dresses down, appearing as a ordinary swab. Lark asks about captains, including Morton, that frequent Ollo and might be looking for hands.
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
The captain hands Dr. Fitch off to Yamtisy to be settled in a guest berth. He brings the rest of the officers into private conference.
Once the confusion about Morton's status is sorted he says, "Well, we're spoiled for choice. A fight, a heist, even a plain old mugging could work. Anyone have any bright ideas or actual plans?" Lark pulls of his tricorne and idly brushes off some dust. "If he does dock here in Ollo soon that will be our chance to scout his ship and crew. We can follow Morton if he comes ashore, maybe an opportunity will present itself."
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
Lark grins at his first mate, "Thanks, I appreciate that." He attempts a wink with his new wooden eye, but the unused muscles give more of an odd facial tic. "That didn't feel quite right. Guess I'll need to practice."
Carrying on...
"If Captain Morton is due in Ollo soon that's certainly our chance to go after the ring. Chakam, you're right, we've got more than one way to be sneaky among us."
"Dr. Fitch, would you care to share what kind of doctoring Morton was looking for when he came to you?"
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
After the eye goes in the young captain blinks several times. "That is peculiar, but I like it!"
He listens closely to Dr. Fitch's explanation, then nods at Chad's comment, "We can have this talk as we go." Lark leads out and heads back toward the docks.
"I don't mind a fight, but if Morton's a Free Captain we can't attack him without provocation. We might gin up a reason, but seeing how we're new to the game I'd want to be careful with that." Lark looks around at the group. "This is where I ask the rest of y'all about magic stuff. Even if we don't have such a spell among us, could we get a scroll one of you could use?"
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
Lark interjects after Chakam's question, "Competition or not, we're headed after the Banshee and this is strong lead. I'm sure the good doctor can tell us what he knows when we're underway."
"Yes, Dr. Fitch we have a deal. You help us find the ship and you'll have your retirement share of its spoils." Lark offers to shake on the deal, then continues, "What do you say we hang about while you pack. Then we can escort you to the Fearsome Tide. Now that we have a lead I'm loathe to let it out of my sight."
"I'd still like an eye while we're here. That one in fact, if it'll fit." He points to one of the wooden lacquered orbs painted to look human-natural.
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
Kahuranga, I'm happy to be with you too, even with no spells ;) I hope you're feeling better.
---
Lark patiently holds still for the examination and measurements.
"Aye, waiting for news can be as hard as getting bad news. One more reason I prefer being out on the water." He tries for a sympathetic tone, "It sounds like worrying about your friend weighs on your heart and your livelihood." Lark opens his purse and starts counting out a large payment for the wooden eye. And no, they've not talked price yet.

"Just a few of us, no problem." Lark nods in approval as the crew sort themselves into guard positions, then steps inside. Looking around he says to Dr. Fitch, "I'm sure it's better not to have a bunch of folks knocking about all your equipment."
Lark glances at cases, then he does a double-take and steps up for a closer look. "I really wasn't sure you'd have anything for me, but these are quite fine. Show me the wooden ones." He offers Dr. Fitch a handshake, "Captain Lark Greenwood. If I'm to have a new eye I may as well stay on brand."
The captain is serious about buying an eye, but as they discuss the items as prices he says, "I've not seen a lot of Ollo, but these don't seem like local products. Do you travel much to keep up your stock? Any interesting trips lately?"

Provided we're able to dock and get started without trouble....
As they start searching Ollo, Lark removes his eyepatch and spins a story of lingering problems from his injuries. "I look for sawbones in every port big or small. Some have helped and some hurt, but either way I keep trying. Maybe it's foolish, but I'm still hoping."
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
Lark talks to the docking crew. He's willing to pay full price, but dickers briefly, just to keep in practice.

-----
The captain gives a sharp nod at Chad's conclusion. "Nice catch, putting that all together." He moves the meeting to the chart table and instructs Belina to start plotting a course. "...Ollo. While you're at it see if we can cover some of the Quent to Ollo route, without going too far out of the way."
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
Lark remains aboard the Fearsome Tide at this port of call. He takes the opportunity to cover the ship from stem to stern, checking on repairs and the never ending upkeep required by all sailing ships.
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
"Okay, I think we should chase them now, across the reef. If we can't find our prize then maybe we get Vakarla talking. For now I hope she stays out." Lark looks directly at Yamtisy, "If she gives you any hint of trouble while we're gone don't hesitate to finish her off."
"Sandara, can you get Chad moving again? And maybe a little extra healing for the rest of us, if you've got it? While you're at it, you can add my thanks to Besmara that you and Chad pulled through."
Lark binds Vakarla and tries to staunch the worst of bleeding. "I've no mind to spend much healing on her, but it's probably wise to keep her breathing until we've secured our prize." He surveys the deck, trying to take stock. "Her crew is fleeing, but how soon can we give chase? The Tide will take some work to get off this reef and I don't love the idea of sending the bulk of us haring by foot or small boat." Lark pauses, then points to Chad, "And someone get that man a drink. He's not all the way back with us yet."
Lark spits a curse at the invisible wall and calls out, "Belina, belay that! Chakam, Quinn, drop the anchor! This $@#%! wall might rip off a mast if we move."
It looks like Chakam and Quinn are right next to the anchor winch. Please let me know if that object on the map isn't what I think it is.
At Chad's warning the captain readies a melee attack in case anything emerges from the mist.
Damage, IC, prayer, sneak attack:1d6 + 5 + 3 + 1 + 4d6 ⇒ (3) + 5 + 3 + 1 + (2, 5, 4, 4) = 27

"Helm! Hard to starboard! Rosie, help with the wheel." Lark orders the runner to help get the wheel moving as quickly as possible.
He continues with a string of orders, "Thren, bring the sails about, we need a hard turn! Yamtisy, get us to general quarters, but ignore that ship, it's an illusion." He points to the ersatz Shining Star."Chakam, get your gunners ready, I'll try and have a real target for you shortly."
Lark tries to gauge their distance to the reef. "Chad, get ready to cut loose those barrels once we're turned away from that reef. We may need the extra speed to counter our momentum."
Once all that is in train the captain addresses his seacaster, "Kahuranga, if that ship's an illusion, where's the real one? Could they have made their whole ship invisible?"
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
Towing barrels, nice idea!
Lark works with Chad to purchase the extra supplies. When the Fearsome Tide approaches the right spot they rig the barrels to float at or below the water line. If they appear slow and lumbering then hopefully Vakarla will make an incautious approach.
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
"I think that covers it." The captain stands and bows to Dindreann. "I look forward to seeing you again and placing the Vespal in your hands personally."
On the walk back to the ship Lark says, "Let's have one full watch rotation so everyone gets a little bit of shore leave. That should put the crew in a good mood for a hunting expedition."
How about this idea: just before we get to Rampore find a place to load the Fearsome Tide with some extra heavy ballast, something that's easy to jettison. If we ride low in the water we'll look more like a prize. Then we can drop the weight to chase and attack Vakarla as needed.
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
Lark nods thoughtfully at Kahuranga's idea. "Well, whether the prize was taken by luck or design, we'll get it back either way. It will be our pleasure." He smiles at Dindreann. "We knew Captain Fairwind's job would be more than playing courier. I'd be grateful for anything else you know about Vakarla. With that and a quick resupply we can be on the trail of your relic is short order."
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
The captain takes up one one of the offered drinks and raises it in a small toast. "Thank you for you those sentiments and for your hospitality. I don't know how much else you and Captain Fairwind have in common, but you both favor very fine settings." He takes an appreciative sip and smiles. "And may I say, you both adorn your settings like polished jewels."
"To answer your question, we've been set on the trail of Chelish spies. We're hoping you've some leads that will help with rooting out a network of informants they're cultivating."
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
"Threnody, you and Yamtisy arrange a watch rotation. But let's have all the officers available for this first, ah, meeting." He adds, "That includes Sandara, if she wants."
After the first liberty party receives their instructions from Thren, et al., the captain gestures for the crew to lead the way. "We'll give them a little head start and mingle in right behind them."
Lark strolls casually with his shipmates along the Blue Sky Road to the temple. He will discretely hand over his note to a cleric or servant when the opportunity presents.
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
Noting the crew's interest in visiting the Calistrian temple Lark puts a question to his officers. "I was pondering how to get an interview High Priestess Dindreann. If so many of our folks are visiting the temple maybe that's a good excuse. In fact, we could all troupe over there together. I suppose some might find that awkward, but it might work under the 'hiding in plain sight' theory."
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
Lark responds to Threnody's comment about visiting Captain Fairwind's home port. "I'm interested to learn more about the good captain for sure, but don't forget she doesn't want our association to be obvious." He glances around to include the other officers, "Let's all be careful about how we use her name."
-----
Lark uses what he can recall of Corwin's training drills to organize sparring practice. "We've not had any shipboard action lately, let's not get too rusty."
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
The rogue shakes his head with a bemused expression. "I've nothing extra for spices right now, but good luck keeping Beryl happy, one way or another. You can tell her I spent it training a new artillery engineer, if that helps."
"Since you're all here, I'll remind you that our new commission starts with Quent and Bag Island. I lean to visiting Quent first, but that's just my gut reaction. He pats his stomach, "Or else it's the remnants of Captain Fairwind's fine meal. Anyway, speak up if you know aught of either one."
-----
At some point Lark makes a small fuss of meeting with Belina and presenting the new maps with a flourish. "Here's something special for my favorite navigator." He spreads the heavy parchment on the chart table. "I'll warn you though, you may have me over your shoulder more than usual with these." Lark leans in and traces weather patterns on the map, going on in a distracted voice, "Can't you just imagine it now, battening for a storm off of Drenchport, or enjoying the sun on the beach at Brightglass Isle?"
He straightens up and clears his throat. "Ah, yes. So, our next heading is Quent and Bag Island. Let's see what you can do with these to set us a fair and speedy course."
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
After Tessa explains her task Lark taps his chin with a forefinger and says, "Just to make sure I'm clear on this. The temples have leads on the informants, right? You don't suspect that either one has moles in it?"
Lark is thrilled by the ice cream and digs in with obvious gusto. The young captain gets an almost equal enjoyment watching his officers appreciation of the meal. With a fond smile he says, "I think we need to vary our shore leave routine. There's something to be said for a bit of fancy food and drink."
In the sugar rush from the dessert he allows himself to almost glow with excitement over the maps. "Ah, these are lovely pieces, and useful in so many ways..." He trails off in thought, "I think I could lose a lot of time just watching the weather all over the Shackles. Plus Belina should be over the moon when I show her these." Lark glanes up at Fairwind and says, "That's our navigator."
I'm ready to say a gracious fairwell to Fairwind and wrap up the night. Does anyone else have anymore to say or ask?
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
"Well, I know when to agree with my crew!" Lark gives a self-deprecating grin. "Honestly, I'm of the same mind. Going after some Chells, keeping the Shackles free, all sounds good to me. On top of that it'll be a good chance to try each other out." He tips his head to Fairwind. "You get to see first hand just how good we are, and we get our first marker in the big game."
Lark stands, gives a slight bow and extends his hand, "In good faith we'll agree to pursue this task and keep your confidence, as long as you keep faith with us."
Sense motive:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
Provided Tessa reacts favorably...
After shaking hands Lark chuckles, "That was a bit over the top of me. I get carried away with my speechifying sometimes."[b] He tugs at his collar. [b]"That's what I get for wearing my opera clothes too much." Resuming his seat Lark says, "Let's hear about the job, and don't tell me you haven't got some fancy dessert to impress us with!"
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
At Fairwind's introduction the young captain doffs his hat with a sweeping gesture. "It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm glad hear our reputation preceded us. We certainly worked hard at it." He turns to the rest of group, "And none performed more skillfully than my first, Threnody Nocturne. Our stalwart seacaster Kahuranga and his companion Taniwha keep our winds, er, fair.. Last but never least, Chakam, our artillery engineer, strikes foes from any distance." Lark gestures to each person as he introduces them.
As they sit and begin eating Lark says, "Thank you for welcoming us, and for your efforts to make us feel comfortable." He gestures to take in the room. "I take it you're accustomed to entertaining folks, like us, that aren't used to more, ah, formal dining?"
At Fairwind's political question Lark glances among his friends. "Well, I'm glad you asked. The short answer is, not a lot. We've seen the king and his court, but really we've only barely met 'em. Out on the water we earned our letter with one set of skills. Here on shore may call for a slightly different set."
On their way to the academy Lark says, "I shoulda realized you'd be going to the Mystic Redoubt. They'd take your entrance fee in trade too, but I don't think we have any fancy artifacts like that right now. The Redclaw would have been overkill. Ah well."
After settling accounts the captain wishes Rowena fair sailing. "Study hard, we'll expect great things when we get back."
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
Lark thanks the pirate for the meal and the advice. "I'll keep all that in mind."
Afterwards he corrals Chakam, "Let's have a little sit-down with your engineer before we see about arranging their tuition. We've never recruited anyone this way, so I'm curious to see if we can make it work."
Lark wants a chance to hear her story for himself, but just over a drink or two, nothing very drawn out.
Sense motive:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16
If there are no major red flags, then the captain will suggest splitting the tuition payment. Something along the lines of giving half to Rowena, and the other half directly to the school. That way he can see if the school is legit and show some trust to Rowena as well.
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
If the messenger waits for a reply then Lark scrawls a quick note with an affirmative RSVP. He hands it over along with a tip and a question, "Do you know who else got one of these letters?"A generous tip to encourage an answer, a few gold?
"We did make a splash with the Redclaw, but I expect you're right, there'll be more than food on the table. Either way I'm not going to risk an insult by declining." Lark scans the parchment thoughtfully. "I'm going ask around if Captain Fairwind usually entertains new Free Captains. Threnody, would you have time today to do your mending trick on my opera suit? I'll wear it out at this rate."
Lark spends part of the day trying to find out who else might be attending the dinner and if Fairwind usually invites newly made captains.

To jump back briefly...
When the group arrives at the docks Lark addresses their other new acquaintance, "Mr. Jerrell, thank for your speedy help back there. You're welcome to wait aboard the Fearsome Tide while the ruckus dies down. We're going to have a little palaver with Caulky. I think you've earned a seat there, if you like."
---------
Lark winces in sympathy when Caulky describes losing her eye. After she finishes speaking he says to her, "Threnody and I can both attest there are more than two ways to be dead. In the interest of having some better choices down the road you best stay here tonight. Honestly I think it's safer for you and for us if you stay until the Wormwood. sails. Whether you go or not after that will be your choice."
More generally he says, "I'd pay a lot to know more about whatever schedule Harrigan is so keen on. When Caulky here doesn't return he's sure to get even more paranoid. I wonder if he might even leave early?"
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
Lark hustles the group onto the Fearsome Tide.
"Alright, anyone hurt? Get patched up and meet in my quarters. Caulky, take some time to get yourself together, then I hope you have a story to tell us."
Before starting in with any questions the captain takes time to try and make Caulky comfortable and feeling as unthreatened as possible, given the chaos of their escape from the bar.
Diplomacy:1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Looks like I need some help with the diplomacy on this one. Also, what all do we need to ask? I think we'll be squaring off against Harrigan in the regatta, so anything Caulky can tell us about his current ship and crew. Also, was Caulky just on a mission to capture more crew, or was there more going on?

Rain of Frogs would be pretty funny in the middle of a bar fight. But you're right, it might injure a lot of people, including us.
"I might be able to get that door open and get us all out of here, if you give me room to work." Lark suggests trying to escape, but he waits to move until he sees Caulky's reaction to his crew's entreaties.

Lark nods at Threnody's invitation. "Aye, I like the cut of your jib, Mr. Pierce." He scratches his cheek below his own eyepatch. "Join us for a drink."
At the shrine:
Along with Sandara, Lark leaves five mother of pearl disks (undersea currency he acquired back around Warvil's Folly).
Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]
Despite the early hour Lark happily accompanies Sandara to the Berth of the Sea Wraith.
The other task the rogue sets himself is to gather information about the free captains, especially Harrigan. Lark devotes a few evenings to buying drinks at different taverns and asking for stories about the other captains. He keeps a careful ear out for recent news of Harrigan and how well he's recovered from the loss of so many crew. Just to make things tougher Lark also tries to hide his particular interest, he doesn't want word getting back to Harrigan.
Lark listens with interest to Chakam's story about his recruiting efforts. "Nice work out there. We've recruited most all our crew from one tavern or another. Clearly we should broaden our horizons." He cocks his head at Rowena's offer. "Never tried sending someone to school before bringing them aboard. It might be worth another chat, see if they're serious and trustworthy."
---------------------
Kahuranga - don't let me step on your adventure, just a reminder that Lark is generally happy to poke his nose in things and get into trouble if you want any backup.
As he speaks Larks makes a circuit of the room, jumping from table to table. He tells a light-hearted version of their capture by and contract with Varossa. "If anyone ever asks if you want to see what the inside of a lightning bolt looks like, just say 'no.'" He points to is missing eye, "And duck!"
With self-deprecating humor the captain tells of their wide-ranging quest for "the three reasons to live." He'll keep an eye on Threnody and the others, if they want to chime in or take over. As the story approaches Brightglass island he'll adopt a more serious tone, and hand off to Thren if she hasn't taken over before that.

Lark echoes Threnody's sentiment, "Chad, well done, I like your priorities." He looks around to catch all his officer's attention. "Nice job, everyone! Kahuranga, don't sell yourself short. Knowing you all have my back let's me charge in like a reckless fool. Next time, when I fall on my face, you'll be there to pick up the pieces."
"Now it's time to break out our opera clothes and go see a man about a letter." After a quick change of clothes Lark leads the way to the Gatehouse, fancy invitation in hand.

"Sandara, Chad, look sharp! He's gonna climb up near one of you to avoid the grease."Hopefully he'll think we're focused on the edges to the fog.
After a quick warning and hopeful misdirection Lark advances quietly into the fog. He draws his blade and prepares a pointy surprise if the giant draws near.
