A small band of mariners find themselves press-ganged into service on the Wormwood, led by the fearsome Barnabas Harrigan. Will they turn their misfortune to glory on the high seas, or will folly lead them to an ignominious watery death?

Owlbear flinches as though he had been struck. "Talky gave'em to me. Talky said they was mine." He wraps his ham-sized fists around the bushel protectively, but hearing the order clearly, he heaves a great sigh and, looking for all the world like he just watched 10 puppies get strangled, picks up the basket and dutifully carries them over to the stairs to the galley. The top of the basket still half off, several crabs still jump out of the basket and skitter across the deck. Target practice for Taniwha later, most likely.

Folks going ashore, let me know roughly where you're going and what you're doing. Diplomacy and similar checks will be called for gathering information. It occurs to me I don't have a lot of data on Ollo so I'll go flesh out some details in the meantime.

Before he leaves the ship, Chad pokes his head in the galley. "Make sure that Owlbear gets at least one crab tonight. I will grant he had several previously, but they really are better cooked." Shaking his head to himself, Chad gets ready to search for the necessary supplies for their upcoming capper.

"Let's go do some legwork and find out what we can on the streets then. Sooner we get started, sooner we're done." The bard suggests.

Out on the street, our tiefling spends time at first casing the Red Light Street area. She notes where the brothels are, how they look, likely approaches. When she gets a chance, she stops to chat up any 'unoccupied' ladies of negotiable affections and asks about Captain Morton. She slips them some coins for their trouble, making sure they know it's also buying their silence that anyone was asking about him. Thren also asks about which women he's enjoyed, getting an idea of his preferences and which brothels he likes the most.

Chad identifies an "herbalist" who likely has few scruples in the kind of materials he sells. The human, young adult, has a few scars and a shaved head.

"Man, are you in luck. I didn't have anything like what you wanted made--doesn't work too good on the shark folk, you have to get too close--but a young lady came in here just this morning and sold me three vials of oil of taggit. She had an eyepatch. I guess she wanted to keep that one eye open!" He laughs at his own bad joke, and produces the three vials. "I've confirmed it's the real deal. 90 gold apiece."

Chad examines the vials. The smell, size, shape seem to guarantee it is indeed oil of taggit. The shopkeep is asking market price. Either because the goods are second hand or he likes the cut of your and Kahuranga and Taniwha's jib, he apparently decided to ask for higher, though that wouldn't be out of place in a place like this. Taniwha can tell the man is holding an open posture and probably believes what he is saying.

Chakam until you say otherwise, I am assuming that you're in seagull form keeping an eye on the split party, flying back and forth between each location. Post when you are able. It's a busy time of year.

While the two sylphs head to a street close to where Dr. Fitch's office was, Lark and Thren head to a pair of intersecting streets just above the dock district, Rum Street and Red Light.

The men and women who work on Red Light street are just coming out, staking their turf. Some don't wish to answer questions even for a bribe, not wanting trouble, but some direct Thren toward "Millie at the End of the Block." Millie is a half-elven woman, with dyed bright red hair and tired eyes, and asks for 10 gold for a promise of silence.

If Thren Pays:
"Old Milksop? He's been coming here like clockwork every other month for, oh, years now. Best you ask Madam Tilbury in the Torn Skirt. It's not the only place he goes, but she runs a tight ship, and she's less likely to turn on you... if you cut a good deal with her, know what I mean?"

Lark meanwhile heads into a place called the Dock's Hand, marked such by a hand roughly carved out of wood, where a lot of young mariners seek booze and work.

Some, plied with coin and liquor, are happy to discuss Morton. "Loves his fish chowder when he comes in, don't he? Always orders a heapin' bowl and soaks his hardtack in it. 'S'why they call him Milksop. But he ain't a lightweight--wizard, he is. Half his ship ain't crew, it's... it's things... Things he summons, things that move that ain't supposed to move. I hear the ballista fire themselves. He probably pays well, but he don't hire much because of that. You'd be safer with a free cap'n anyways. I hear there's a new one sailing round, based somewhere northwest. Greenworm or something."

Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]

Lark laughs, "Greenworm? That sounds fishy to me. Who'd want to ship out with some johnny-come-lately with name that shows off how inexperienced they are?"

The rogue returns to the ship, resumes his usual outfit, and reports what he learned to the others. "Anyone have any good way to penetrate illusions? Sounds like that's what we'll be facing if we have to get into it with Morton."

Lark will ask Dr. Fitch about reputable (or close to reputable) potion sellers. If there's time for another shopping trip he will look for any potions or items that might help see through illusions.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

The pirate chatting with Lark, a heavyset fellow with a gold tooth shakes his head vigorously. "No no, man, not 'lusions. I mean... I dunno... it could be 'lusions, but I don't think so. I mean shit like, he calls wind elly-mentals that blow the sails or mess with an enemy ship's rigging. I don't think 'lusions can do that. " He frowns at Lark. "Wait a minute, I thought you wanted to get hired, now you wanna get in a scrap?"

Dr. Fitch trusts the alchemist whose shop is across the street from his. He says the one on the next street over deals in Black Market items and he tries to avoid that one.

Thren pays her informant and head's off to find Madame Tilbury at the Torn Skirt.

Assuming she gets in to see her, Thren does ask about 'Old Milksop'. "I'm looking for him. No point hiding that. Seems he visits here regularly." The bard says simply.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

Threnody is led into the Torn Skirt, an establishment nondescript on the outside, clean on the in--which probably takes some effort given the looks of some of the patrons waiting in the front lounge. A halfling greeter escorts Thren to Madame Tilbury's office upon Thren's request.

Madame Tilbury is an older human woman with wrinkled, creamy brown skin, dressed in a tight purple silk dress adorned by a chain belt with a long, sheathed dagger hanging off one side. Something tells you she likely knows how to use it. She eyes Threnody appraisingly in the way a combatant sizes up an opponent.

"I appreciate a body who comes to the point," She says to Thren. "I'll do you the favor of the same. Milksop's a good customer. But he's also caused trouble for other good customers in the area. Who are you, and what are you willing to offer for information?"

"Time is money, why waste it? My name's Threnody. First Mate of the Fearsome Tide. Morton has something my captain wants. So I'm out here learning what I can so we can take it from him. But some are less in Iomadae's graces than others." The bard grins wickedly. "Also might not hurt to teach him that there's pirates, then there's Free Captains. He's still not a big fish in these waters."

The bard slides over 25 gp. "That's for listening. More for talking." She grins now. "And I think you've got plenty to say."

We are on a break, but I did say I would post a response to the posts that are up, so this is it

*Thren*

"Hmm, what kind of thing? Information? Loot? That fancy figurehead on his bowsprit? I wouldn't go for the last, I hear it's mean." Madam Tilbury twists her mouth in thought. "Look, I'll give you this advice for free: Sorrinash is a mean motherf~@$er, but he's never taken on Morton. Sorrinash could tear him limb from limb if he wanted, but figures he leaves Morton running between here and Plumetown, it keeps other rabble out. So while you may have a right to Morton's plunder as a member of a Free Captain's crew, it might annoy Sorrinash if you upset the dory too much. As long as you're not about to do anything that rash, I might be willing to help. But I'm a business woman, and I need to feed, clothe, and keep in good health my staff. Clothing is especially expensive--the name of the place may be 'torn,' but this isn't some cheap molly-ken. I need to keep the men and women in my employ presentable. And you wouldn't believe the price of silk these days."

*Chad and Kah*

The bald shopkeep considers. "This is good stuff, and it's all I've got. How about this: same price, but I throw in this." He pulls out a pouch of dried herbs. "Masks the smell and taste of taggit. Makes it easier to sneak into someone's drink or whatever, and which is usually what people want this kind of thing for."

Appraise DC 10:
The herbs are what he says they are... of a pleasant, mild fragrance, their qualities tends to mask bad tastes.

A shadowy figure is watching the door to the apothecary shop where Chad and Kahuranga are going, but after a few minutes, they slink into an alley and disappear.

The wind swirls around the two sylphs.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

If the apothecary wasn't convinced by Chad to keep quiet about the purchase, the 10 gold from Kahuranga certainly helps.

As for Threnody, Madam Tilbury explains she's more in need of material goods. If they can provide either quality fabric, clothing, or the monetary funds to buy it--at least 300 gp (30 courtier's outfits for 10 employees)--she will be happy to provide ample assistance. The consideration of a visit from a tailor she will consider adding in something extra, but the promise of a visit of someone whose skills she had not tested is not convincing enough.

Threnody, a DC 15 Bluff or Diplomacy check can reduce this to 250. You can tell easily enough that she has good information to offer or would not be asking this much.

If Threnody pays:

"He keeps a very regular sailing schedule for a chaotic pirate. He'll arrive in two days by noon, and stay in port for three days for ship repairs and to sell his ill-gotten gains. The first night, he gets a meal at the Dock's hand, then comes to visit the Greenbloom Girls, and then goes to the Red Canoe to have several drinks and then sleep it off. The second night, he comes to my establishment to drink and do business with a couple of my girls. The Dock's Hand barkeep is easy to pay off if you want to try to do something to him there, or... as I would prefer to be sure he is not killed, if you have poison or magic to apply and tell me what information or thing you want from here, I am willing to have my girls take care of it when he visits. I can understand if you do not want to give me that much access, but it also keeps your hands less dirty. Alternative, you could try to ask him directly what he wants; I'd wait until after he's been drinking the first night; he may be willing to do business, but trust that he will ask a very high price. I wouldn't irk him, whatever you do--in addition to the fact that Sorrinash lets him live for a reason, he is a skilled conjurer. While I expect you can handle yourself, along with your mates, he has gone uncontested on his route for years for a reason. He is less dangerous ashore than on his ship, but I would not test him were I you.

"Finally, he keeps an odious air mephit as a familiar. Be aware that even if Morton is less than aware of things, his familiar will keep watch. All the more reason to either let me help you, or be prepared to do business up front."

You find a jewelry and pawn shop easily enough in this kind of town.

The difficult part is guessing the appearance of Morton's ring not knowing anything other than its name. You can buy any old metal ring at a low price, or one made of a precious metal at market rate. You could attempt a Knowledge Arcana check to guess at your knowledge of what the Ring of the Iron Skull might look like, or ask the shopkeeper while providing some incentive.

Note that if you're hanging out in brothels, they're gonna think it's weird if you don't hire their services although you could of course bribe them or otherwise make them understanding of what you're doing... this makes the most sense at the Torn Skirt as the Madam is in on it.

Lark returns and listens to the planning, but says, embarrassed, that while he was looking for helpful potions in town he accidentally inhaled some debilitating herbs getting too curious about one shop's products and is not feeling well. Quinn and Dr. Fitch have both looked at him and are under his care but he asks that you carry out plans while he recovers. He trusts whatever you decide to do will be fine.

Milksop Morton is due to arrive in two days. Yamtisy has released the crew for a brief leave while you wait, though some are still working on repairing your ship from the damage it took scraping against the coral reef.

Kahuranga will work with those repairing the ship as necessary. He can grant water lung to allow folks to breathe water as long as he is there to renew it every minute. He will also magic up a bit of helpful air (unseen servant) to help with minor tasks, freeing up the more skilled carpenters to focus on the hard stuff.

He is also happy to hire services in brothels as time grows closer. He has always thought of himself as called by the wind and the wave of Gozreh, but his recent brushes with the Calistrian faith are intriguing.

"Morton will arrive in two days. I think the second day he's here he'll be vulnerable. I'm thinking we grab the ring while he's visiting the brothel with help from the ladies of the evening. We knock him out and get the ring then. I can see if they'll help out, maybe put myself there with their leave to perform for a bit."

Let me know when you guys are ready to go. You've got the oil of taggit and the aid of one brothel. Sounds like Kahuranga is happy to hang out at the Torn Skirt, and Thren may perform in their common room. Any pieces of the plan I need to be aware of?

Chad nods. "On the day, I will stand by near Smythe and Sons. Once you have the ring, have either Master Chakram or Master Taniwha bring it to me so that I can find a suitable replacement. I will then send the replacement back to you... courtesy of air mail... while bringing the ring back to the ship."

After two days, you receive words from cremated keeping watch for you that the Dryad's Grave has entered port. It's quite noticeable, with a huge figurehead in the shape of a crossbow-wielding satyr. A smaller crew gets out than you would expect for the ship of that size. Morton, in a long navy blue coat and balding pate, is pointed out to you by Fitch (who otherwise stays out of the way so he is not associated with your efforts, lest he blow your cover). Morton is always accompanied by a silvery white imoish creature with translucent wings, breezes always blowing around it--an air mephit. Chakam watches him in seagulls form and he sticks to the known schedule for the first day, visiting prostitutes then getting a meal of fish chowder at one of the local inns. The second day he is expected to head to the Torn Skirt.

Please give me final actions, along with appropriate die rolls, e.g. stealth if you are hiding, Perception to keep an eye out, Sleight of Hand to swap rings, etc... I trust you know what to do and roll the right dice for it.

Rolling Perception to see if Chakram (or whomever is dropping off the ring) is followed and Appraise to find/barter for the adequate replacement.

On the day Dryad's Grave arrives into town, Chad takes up his position near Smythe and Sons, sipping a tea at an eatery nearby so that he does not draw too much attention while he waits.

Thren on the fateful day will be performing at the Torn Skirt.

She'll be keeping her eyes open in case of trouble...besides our plan, of course.

Is Kahuranga also at the Torn Skirt? Just double checking

Also--what is the exact plan to actually obtain the ring? I am still not clear on this.

Yes, Kahuranga will be at the Torn Skirt.

K Bluff I'm just a customer: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17

Taniwha look at the tiny dragon, he is very distracting: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18

What I think the plan is: 1. Doxie greets Milksop as usual and offers him a drink. Drink is drugged with the oil of taggit and tasty herbs. I misfortune DC 19 him to make him take worse of d20 for a round. Next round I evil eye him (DC 19 Will Save, -4 to saves for 1 round if successful or 8 rounds if failed). He makes the save vs the poison after a minute (have to time all of that well). DC 15 or asleep for 1d3 hours. While he is asleep, we take the ring and have a facsimile created. Facsimile goes back on his finger. We set sail.

I guess the back up plan is "Get him!"

Everyone please correct me, add to the plan, or just trash the whole thing. I feel like I've derailed things a bit with this con job. I'm not trying to hog focus. I don't think we necessarily have the skills to pull this off.

Kahuranga I am taking your familiar's roll as an aid another; with my aid another houserule, your Bluff result is 20

On Day Two, Morton enters the Torn Skirt in the evening, where Thren is keeping marks and customers alike well entertained. One of the employees has placed a sign by Thren in several languages that says, "Do not touch the tiefling on pain of pain."

Morton, a middle aged man covered in numerous scars, enters with a good bit of swagger and is greeted as a loyal regular, customers, servers, and prostitutes alike waving or calling out to him. Perched upon his shoulder is a little bat-winged creature with pale, translucent flesh and with wispy fur coming out of his head that seems constantly breeze blown, much as seen with Chad and Kahuranga. Morton refers to the creature as Xicorax. While the good captain behaves the the bravado of the unwary (and probably already a bit buzzed), Xicorax keeps a constant, leery eye around the tavern. Madame Tilbury herself greets him, mentioning that his usual favorite Melinda is out of service due to illness, but the lovely Tina is available to offer her services to him. Milksop seems to have little issue with this, although Xicorax grumbles.

Auran:

"She's not the usual one, be careful! Who is that tiefling, she's never been here before? That man, he smells nice... but there's too much cardamom in the wine tonight!"[/b]

But Morton swats the mephit, fairly hard by the looks of it, giving Kahuranga a chance to cast his hex unnoticed. Tina, a half-elven lass with creamy skin, takes him to a discreet corner to "get him warmed up," with a mug of his favorite spiced wine (while Kahuranga prepares the next hex).

I'd rather have these rolls for Dottie, dammit! Still, Evil Eye works for 1 round and that's all you need hopefully

She drinks one alongside him.

You know, sometimes as the GM, I actually don't want to "win."

After chatting with him for a bit, she sees he doesn't seem to be getting sleepy, so she offers him another.

Tina Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

He acquiesces and drinks another.

Morton, Fortitude Save DC 15: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
If it makes all of you feel better, I--and probably Tumbler-can guarantee you that all my PCs in my other games will roll nothing but 1-3 for the next three weeks at the very least.

She chats with him, surreptitiously giving the party an agreed-upon signal that the plan does not seem to be working. You are aware from Madam Tillbury that Tina has some capability of swiping things the old fashioned way, while distracting him the other old fashioned way, but she's not super-skilled, and can't guarantee you success by a long shot.

Meanwhile, the mephit continues to scan the room with suspicion. Of course those of you with familiars are also aware that if Morton feels anything odd, the empathic link with his familiar will alert the mephit.
