Seems to be a pretty big overhaul to the Midnight setting, a far more optimistic version, unless of course the heroes of these past two years just get corrupted and turned into night kings themselves and it turns into a much worse situation.

I will say that the knight kings have always been my favorite thematically because the represent the idea of corruption that is midnights running theme. That evil managed to corrupt the best of us by using these heroes best qualities against them. Ardherin own bravery and love were used to make him take unreasonable risk. Sunulael's own faith in a higher power gets twisted. Jahzir knew he was the best person for running the kingdom, and it was probably true. I'm sad to see them go and I wonder if you will replace them with equally compelling knight kings.

I hope this setting retains the theme and feel of midnight.

Sounds like a lot has changed in just 2 years. Humans will be suffering big time from all of this. Without Ardherin or Sunulael there will only be two big powers. The Cabal and Jahzir. If they team up then the humans are seriously boned.

The shadow plotting against each other has always been its biggest weakness, taking out Sunulael might have been a bad idea. If they're united and focus down their problems they can fix a lot of loose ends like Badens Bluff, just set enough cablalist to divine out the problem. Jahzir could finally get serious about wiping out the free riders or focusing down the dwarves.

Do you want any of your previous players to join back in? I know I could get a hold of DoomedHero.

Well, I think I'm gunna have to bow out. I don't want to rant or complain too much because everyone els seems to be enjoying things but I have to say I am no longer having fun. I think it started when we where on the waters edge and we had a good opritunity for char development and the GM just told us what to do. Maybe I'm just picky about my DM's but I haven't liked the feel of this game so much for a while and now is as good a time as any to back out.

There is a part of me that is also frustrated but I realize that even if I rules lawyer my way back to life it means little when the real problem for me still remains. I'm not willing to play a revolving door of red shirts,

though the idea did come to mind that I create a string of Dornish channelers all with trandimensional spell feat so when they inevitably died they would still be able to cast and eventually Ragnar would be loaded to the gills with magic casting ghosts.

Anyway, I hope the rest of you still have fun and good luck.

Huh? These things are supposed to fall down to us? Where is my AoO for them crossing my threatened squares? Not only that but I should also get attack on every one within my threatened squares except the one that kills me.

I'm kinda pissed that I began this encounter with almost full health and have now been so battered in one round that I die.

Lanik is dead

As a ghost, Anvinder can't effect things on the mortal plane without the Transdimensional Spell feat, though he might not know that.

Well, he doesn't know that.

Nightflier, do we get AoO when the bugs disappear?

I was wondering this also. I made an escape artist check that should probably have me already clear plus an acro to land safely.

I just wanna be sure he know I'm not actually a palidin, as much as I try. Opening round and I got nailed for 18 hp and a grapple condition, which BTW leaves me at 6HP. Thank god I rolled well with my hp or I could be flat out dead. I'm not terribly complaining, just makes me worried to have a char with low hp.

Escape artist:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15

I have taken 10 dmg, not a lot compared to to others but a lot for me and considering that demons got it out for me I would like to be at full.

Lanik stays right in front of Ragnar. Lanik could use some healing.
1d10 ⇒ 5

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Slight of hand:1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13 Plus whatever bonus for being under a cloak and behind ragnar.

As Laniks body slumped on the ground he begins to move slowly, trying not to alert the soldiers. Trying mearly to position himself to be able to stand up erect if the need be. Being sure to use the confusion of the battle to hide his movement.

Lanik will use his AoO on the first poor bastard to try to get his head that goes through his threatened squares. He is still holding his glaive. I know I have penaltys for being on the ground but they cant be nearly as bad as the ones they have for being flat footed.

Lanik reciveing the last arrow, staggers. His eyes buldge for a second and then roll back into his head. His body stiffens and he give one last forced breath as he falls over dead.

can lanik bluff that the arrow did a lot more damage then it did? Thats what I was planing to do. Take an arrow and act as though it had killed me. Thats what the bluff was for. To them I must look like I'm on the verge of death because of my disguise.

There is no one shorter than you in the group and you are pretty distinctive anyway. Could you elaborate what you had in mind to achieve with your rolls.

sorry, threw down the rolls and then after I saw what they were I wrote out what the effect was. I figure its faster then saying what I was going for and rolling, then waiting for a response to write more.

Lanik come running up for the front of the crowd, along the way he grabs some of the red and blue barres he has seal up in his rations and mashes then in his palm, Then smears it on his face to simulate bruises. The he bites the corner of his lip untill there is blood flowing down. Finaly he cuts his jacket just below the right shoulder

Well the jackets red so no need to come out with blood for that.

By the time Lanik reaches the front of the crowd he has added a fake limp and is completely playing it up.

you bastereds want a... Lanik breaths in a hard painful breath fight with me? Common, bring it!

If I wind up at the top of the init list then I want to hold an action to do a bluff check on the first attack that comes my way.

I was estimating, I think we only managed to go one rounds worth of move before the perceptions kicked in, so thats the impression I have. BTW, Lanik is useing detect evil to point out enemy locations

Assuming it's not just leaving. If it flies out over the water, we can't really follow it.

Lanik sizes up the situation.

It will probably just get away and recover its strength before we can do anything.

The gnome rubs his chin for a bit. Then an idea strikes him.

Ragnar, perhaps we should set a trap for the demon. Confront these ones up ahead and pretend like we are loosing. If the demon thinks he can take advantage of the situation then he will join the fight. He seems to have some sort of connection to his minions, all we need to do is play the part.

Ragnar Death-Speaker wrote:

What you said brings up an interesting point though, something i hadn't thought about.

Demons, being "creatures of both worlds" pose an interesting situation for Ragnar.

The Midnight book says that outsiders, when destroyed, go to the spirit realm until such time as they can make themselves a new physical body, and are subject to all the same rules as the Trapped (all other spirits). Possessor Demons, like Ugly and Astiraxes, never get to leave the spirit realm. They just puppet corporeal creatures. A lot of abilities can effect a possessor without harming or effecting the host.

This makes me think that if ghosts and spirits have the ability to effect each other (which in most cases they do) that Sky'tor, Anvinder and Eyvinder are actually in a unique position to be able to help kick the Demon's but and possibly free the queen.

Might be a fun opportunity for Scranford, Gabboge and Twiceborn to temporarily reprise their fallen characters and just post their actions in spoilers or something. :)

Bump this topic for sure.

The demon has the ability to improve its flight speed to 240 for 1 minute per day, and its flying speed is 40 otherwise, so you will not catch it. But don't worry - he will be back. And just for the record, I'm using modified version of Shadow Demon. Essentially, it lost DR and some other stuff, but gained hps and some other stuff.

Does the demon have this weird fligt ability to make up for the fact it can't teleport?

Lanik keeps a look out ahead to warn Ragnar of any of the minions comming

I also like the way you flavor your abilities. My comment about Muni was strictly on the mechanical side. Muni is physical being and his movement must obey the laws of physics. Mage Hand is not. It does not move in the same way, so if Muni tried to share the burden with it, the different vectors of their flight would probably resulted in dispersing the hand, because greater force would be at work than just the dragging of the net.

For the record, sometimes I don't have the time to explain all of my reasons - but I always think it through.

I guess I misunderstood the issue you had with what i was trying to do. I thought you didn't like the idea of Muni "activating" one of Ragnar's abilities by yelling at a ghost or something, but it was actually that you didn't think Mage Hand should be able to work with or add to any physical action. Is that right?

I can buy that. Thanks for the explanation.

Kinda weird, I always thought of this ability as a ghost being able to help slightly. I don't see why a flying ghost couldn't keep up but I guess thats a bit convoluted.

heh. Yeah, I'd actually thought about how obnoxious it would be to have an entire group of people (us, for example) with Combat Reflexes and Backstab.

Surround the enemy. Hit them. When they hit back, everyone they don't hit, hits them again.

Toss in Karmic Strike or Robillar's Gambit, and even the guy they swing at gets to hit them again.

Sounds like a good idea for a deadly team of shadow goblins. Hehe

Yea, I'm gunna try not to abuse it to the point that the actions don't make sense.

But hot damn, just wait till I get my smite next lvl. With the new smite rules I would be riping this guy a new one by myself.

And I see you demon, I see what you really are, I see the uglyness beneath the surface.

Lanik stance changes as he prepares for another assault.

BTW lanik ignores 3 pts of damage reduction per attack.

..

so as I see it I have 4 attacks. First is when he attacks chops then is as he leaves my threatened squares, next my held action is triggered and my normal attack goes off and after that is his attack on Muni. So here goes

attack+7 +1MW +2 flanking
First attack he is flat footed.

att1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
dmg1d8 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + (4, 5) = 13

att1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
dmg1d8 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + (5, 5) = 14

att1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
dmg1d8 + 2d6 ⇒ (3) + (4, 1) = 8

att1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
dmg1d8 + 2d6 ⇒ (2) + (5, 6) = 13

So I wanted to post about this before it might become a big deal. The way I built my charecter is about to be shown off and I want to make sure everything is ok about it before I do it.

Ok so here is what I think will happan. Im currently hiding behind this demon, holding for one attack. Now, I have a feat that allows me an attack of opritunity whenever an enemy attacks the people I'm flanking with. I also I combat reflexes which adds another 3 attacks of opritunity.

So when big demon attack next round and launches a volly of attacks like last time I can get about 3 attacks of opritunity and one held attack in. All possibly able to do 2d6 sneak attack damage and ignoring 3 points of DR on each one.

I want to point out that this is the trick he was built to do, and that this is in fact the perfect situation for it. Normaly Lanik has to be in the thick of it and runs the risk of getting surrounded.

I just wanted to point this out in case the GM has a diffrent interpretations of the rules about this and so when it comes up we dont get bogged down.

Acrobatics:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Stealth:1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25

Positioning myself on the other side of this guy to attempt to use my back stab feat. Just to refresh you that means if im flanking him and one o the people I am flanking him with gets attacked then I get an attack of opportunity.

So if I can get to the other side of him with a 5-foot Ill do that but otherwise I'm trying to inconspicuous tumble to the other side of him.

Readying an attack for once one of my attacks of opportunity is used against the demon.

Lanik instantly slips out of his bright red jacket leaving it draped against the wall as to not draw too much attention to himself and rolls past the demon to the other side of him practically melding with the shadows.

Lanik does his best to stay focused and thinking only of how he feel and his heart beat. He believes that if this thing can speak to his mind it might also be able to read it. He is now in reactionary mode, waiting for an opportunity.

Lanik focus' in to try to get a grasp on how many evil creatures and what positions they are in.

nightflier wrote:
Lanik, I'll answer your question after this encounter.

Lanik is in. Also detect evil after 6 seconds should give me number and position of evil creatures, then after 12 it should give me magnitude, magnitude is based on hi dice apparently and not level of evil.

My detect evil is still up and sweeping for movement.

Lanik once again looks back.

Well, are we all put together? River willing, today we will end that demon. I'll Take the lead, I may be small but I'll be the first one to see this thing coming.

He moves to take the lead but then pauses. Looking back at everyone, his eyes finally fall upon the dorn.

Well I suppose if we are going to fight and probably die together you should know my true name. My name is Lanik Clearwater, and I was a smuggler of the bluff.

Lanik quickly hops up to the front of pack.

rather then a fate point, can I lvl Anvinder up to lvl 2? He was like 150 exp away and at lvl 2 he can enter peoples dreams.

Lanik turn back to Gillian. Staring deeply into her eyes. His voice is low, meant only for gillians ears.

gillian:

There is evil in this place. I can feel it and the River has blessed me with the ability to see it.

Lanik gaze falls to the ground

I have seen the dark god evil, it infects the world, it creeps in and finds a home in your heart and spreads. I have seen this over and over but what I see now is not that.

Lanik tightens his grip on his glaive and gives a hint of fear. A moment later it is gone, replaced with resolve.

There is another kind of evil I see, evil not of this world. It permeates these surroundings. The shadow has its agenda, you generally know what they want and can use that against them. These "creatures" are...... unpredictable. We have to show extreme caution.
