Having reached a wayside inn late in the night the heroes quench thier thirst and end the ache in thier bellies. But when the morning comes, thier gear is gone, weapons and equipment. No one saw anything, so what shall they do? The owner of the inn is an old lady in her late 80's. Hardly a suspect. Though there WAS some OTHER guests last night....

Perhaps they may have thier items as they departed at sunrise, headed east she thinks.

Just give them a wild goose chase for a bit in a major city.
But do allow them to run into the thieves as word of mouth in town says that the PC's are honored guests in the Dragon's Nest Inn, for the thieves are in fact another band of adventurers seeking to cash in on the PC's reputation.

To be a real pain, (only for a home campaign) make the thieving heroes diffrent charcters the players run on other adventures.

I've done this once, it was a real laugh.

In a PC's humble beginnings he once played a high stakes game of knucklebones and lost his shirt, after getting roughed up and kicked out the PC never thought anything of it, some 15 years ago...

Now, apparently someone has put a bounty on the PC's head.
Turns out the fellow the PC owes coin to is quite dead, and his son blames you as he needed the money to payback some shady individuals. Now brought full circle, you must find a way to settle this debt, the son of the gambler needs his head off the chopping block and gave them yours instead.

Or, it could go another direction...
Help the son of the gambler to even the score, as these slimeballs hurt or had someone the PC cared for killed?
Thus it would be beneficial to end this trouble, who is to say the gambler's son hasn't faced the same pain and loss as the PC. Make your PC's really have to think about this choice.

Days after a terrible earthquake has torn through a small community southwest of Dyvers, unearthing what appears to be an entrance into what the local scholar claims to be the sealed dwarven city of Thundalin. According to his research the dwarves lost many kinsmen in the depths of thier old home when journeying too deep and thus according to legend, awakened an ancient evil that sealed thier fates. Few survivors of this place gave warning for many years to come through thier descendants, never to return. But talk of great wealth and abandoned dwarven artifacts has lured many adventurers from the surrounding lands, hoping to try thier hand in finding wealth and glory.
Or perhaps the PC's are the first to explore the ruins, hired by the Sage of this small community to learn what they can of the fate of this legendary dwarven city.

Ok, just to shed some light on the subject... They made 2 inch tall plastic collectables of the action figures, all the figures I know of are as follows;
Villans
Kelek, Warduke, Ogre King, Drex, Grimsword, Mettaflame, Hook Horror (moster), a nightmare mount, Zarak, and Zorgar. (about 13 in all)
Heroes
Strongheart, Bowmarc, Deeth, Mercion, Ringlerun (was on 1st editions Player's handbook painted by Jeff Eastley), Northlord, Melf, Elkhorn, Valkeer, a Titan, and Hawkler.

They had a huge list of figures back then and very nicely done monster figures that would make he-man soil his loincloth.
So yes I did my research and I've noticed they go for quite a bit on ebay.

Behold another lycanthrope adventure hook....

The Village of Stillvale is the best your heroes can do for lodging before sunset, Not many of the townsfolk take kindly to strangers, but that is to be expected in the life of an adventurer. They seem to be in preparation for some kind of festival, harvest moon or something as such you suppose. Still the dying traveller on the side of the road who looked to be mauled by a wild beast spoke in his last breath of men who were not as they seemed. With the sun setting you are rather unsettled by the howl of a wolf....

(It's not just one villager is a lycanthrope, they all are. Have fun.)

Leaving your homeland was not as hard as returning to it. In your absence many things have changed, enemies you made in your travels have come here and extracted revenge by enslaving the people, who hold you responsible.

(Hit a PC where it hurts, use this adventure hook.)

One night you are awakened by a woman's scream, quickly equipping yourself you leave the comfort of your room at the inn to witness a mob of people gathering around one of your companions and a woman laying face down in a pool of blood.

(Really put a PC in a tight spot, tell them they remember having a drink with the lass and then they were here.)

This is an awesome idea for a thread, King Ghidorah! Can I play?

I would be honored. As this helps all of us fight the ho-hum of yet another start in a tavern for the PC's.

...By the way, that was very clever, and direct. Keep up the good work.

When passing through a small farming comminity in a thick forested land, that you inquire where an inn may be found for the night, visibly shaken one commoner tells you there is no place for travellers to stay in these parts. Advising you strongly to turn back the way you came. Within the hour you push onward looking for a place to set up camp as night draws near. Time passes as you find a clearing to make camp, it is then that you see the lofty spires of a castle keep some distance ahead, while you approach a storm is brewing overhead.

(Could be a deathtrap to PC's, Vampires perhaps? Or a madman who invites guests into his home and they are never seen again, as your room is trapped and the dungeon stocked with trolls or perhaps a demonic sibling (struck by a curse) who stalks the labrynth beneath the keep.)

2 people marked this as a favorite.

It seems to me that everyone needs a little spur of the moment adventure sometimes, or simly a catchy beginning to a new campaign, so I propose to post here every day at least one new adventure hook for anyone to use, anytime they need one.

1. A strange illness has taken members of the town watch, now with few guards left in reserve you and your party are drafted into the townships defense. You must discover who or what is behind this epidemic, as it is spreading to many in the old districts. Where the main entrance to the sewers can be found.

Actually yes I fequently use Green Ronin stuff if it enhances the game by adding a new flair where needed, my fiancee often plays a witch from one of thier master class series, it works well enough and doesn't upset the game mechanics or flow of an adventure. So thank you for the info, i'll look and see if they do have one on the Cavalier.

One nice thing about 3.5 is it has that 1st edition feel.
That alone has me comming back for more all the time.

True love in D&D, yes my first time my signifigant other killed my charcter was through friendly fire with an arrow in my back, the next time was being a halfling rouge getting shoved into the hallway to see if it was filled with traps.

Sadly.... It was.

Well, look at it this way. It's a chance to see what you made in an undead and eternally rotting way, it's almost refreshing. (ha.)

I have a library of old adventures and books filled with villans, that would be heaven for me. I can think of at least 20 Greyhawk old school villans off the top of my head.

In my opinion I will always love the Cavalier class, it is sadly missed in almost every adventure, as well as no longer being a Charcater Class. Why not have an adventure with an NPC that is a Cavalier? Despite it all I'm glad they are at least a Prestiege class. So I can play a Fighter and have all the fun I want with bonus feats.

The Paladin Cavalier oh yes, the ultimate shining knight, but fallen from grace? Why he would be a black knight. hmm the campaign possibilities.

My first demise. Now that's a fond memory. No really, I was a Cavalier (one of the best classes in my opinion, and I miss it so as Core Class), but anyways I was ambushed by a female Vampire on the road in the dead of night, I was 3rd Level and she was hungry, need I say more?

It's a laugh that My DM still has that PC turned Vampire, so it's a reunion every now and then for my new guys to meet the first PC I ever made.

Actually we could do that here if nobody minded.

If you find yourself a fan of this major villan then I suggest you hop in ebay or your local game shop and try an find these ancient adventures from Dungeons & Dragons;
XL-1 Quest for the Heartstone
AC 1 The Shady Dragon Inn

In the Shady dragon inn reveals he may have once been a good aligned fighter who was changed by the power of the Heartstone, in a sense it brought out his darker side. His trusted friend the paladin Strongheart became his hated enemy, though the paladin carries no grudge towards his old friend, he feels he must somehow stop him or save him from himself. (typical goody goody behavior, but admirable)
So over time Warduke disappears and is revealed later just as he came out in Dungeon 105, clearly joining the ranks of the horned society as a sellsword, and rather a favored henchman of sorts, though i can't help but say he could easily face his former friend again someday or gather his former lackeys to do his dirty work.

Random Facts:
He appeared in the Cartoon episode:
"In Search of the Dungeon Master." in which he and his bullywugs ambushed the little guy and he froze dungeon master with a unique burst of power from his frost brand (don't ask me but it was great to see the little guy sweat it), thus Dungeon Master is entoumbed in ice and taken back to the Fortress of Fangs, where he summons shadow demon to make an offer with venger (who I always thought was Asmodius). But the children come to the runt's rescue and the fortress crubles with warduke inside, certainly not dead but out of the way.
Kelek was his favored ally though he'd gladly kill him if he ever turned on him, anyways Kelek was in an episode on his own as well as Strongheart.

Warduke's Sword is named "Nightwind" See it listed in Encyclopedia Magica for AD&D 2nd Edition.

The Fortress of Fangs is his headquarters, he usually has Bullywugs in his service and a crew of henchmen; sadly I know every one of thier names.

His mount is a Nightmare. Doesn't that just fit his current revision. Perhaps in today's revision you could say it was a gift for his service to his master? Either way he had it back in 1985.

In 1985 they had a plastic miniature of Warduke, Kelek, Zarak, Strongheart, and Elkhorn. I actually still own mine, as he was a major charcater in my storyines in gaming.

If anyone has any questions feel free to post them as I will be happy to awnser them, as I am still one of his oldest fans.

Thank you Dungeon and Erik Mona.

Just think, gothic horror at it's finset.
Ok maybe not Dracula at the reigns but perhaps Strahd? Come on who Hasn't played Castlevania, I was just thinking every monster is easy enough to find in the Monster manual and Fiend Folio, etc. Instead of a solo hero, it's the descendants of like the Belmonts, hence no lawsuit. Gathered together by an ancient curse that draws them here, through the mists and into Barovia. What do you say? Dos this idea hold any intrest?

I've run this campaign style every halloween for my group and it's big hit, sure a greatsword is better than a whip but if it's a +4 whip that does double to triple damage on undead, give me the whip over the sword any day.

Seriously I want to know what everyone thinks.

Hmm, how old school are you looking for? Warduke was an 1980's bad boy, let me help you by recalling all his lackeys.
There was the Ogre King (a Ogre with a troll bloodline in my game), Zarak the Half Orc assassign, Kelek the necromancer or rather an evil wizard who had fiendish blood in his veins hence a human with pointed ears and rather nasty looks. my favorite would have to be Warduke, I do have his stats if you need them just let me know.

See unearthed arcana if you need further info on bloodlines.
