I was using a 20 point build on the 6player Kingmaker Conversion. The CR12 or so encounter was 2d6 wolves, and I happened to max it out completely, they won with lucky rolls and thinking well enough to get close to each other so that the cleric could get around to everyone when damage was taken. Add that to the amazing dice rolls that they had, with a ton of critical hits rolled and confirmed, they were nearly one shotting the wolves.

They had a gun slinger, inquisitor, illusionist sorcerer, rogue, cleric and a evoker sorcerer, and were around level 3 at the time of the battle with the Stag Lord. They actually haven't dealt with the trusted servants of the Stag Lord. Suffice to say they thought the whole attack through, poisoned a ton of booze that the Stag Lord ended up drinking because he didn't notice that the booze had been broken into, and consequently was knocked unconscious because of the CON damage and some good rolls by the players.

I will most likely be giving them another 10 build points as reward. The lieutenants will most likely be bomb shelling and having their own small bandit forts later, so that will provide an interesting way to make them really work for the exp later. I like the suggestion of bandits with ranger levels backing them up, and if Akiros were to be levelled up a little more then it might make things really interesting.

Like I say, even at second level they were remarkably good, they simply have tactics down. Most characters are optimised well, but with a fantastic backstory. Personality and character has been taken as a must for each character, but the mechanics haven't been ignored. My only worry is that the cleric of Desna has the stag lords helm rather than the rogue who is actually a worshipper of Erastil. But hey ho.

I am having an issue with my players. Not so much that they aren't enjoying the game, because they are. The problem comes more from the fact that tactically they are incredibly sound. Many of them play MMORPG's or other strategy games, and so if I give them so much as a couple of rounds of preparation before an encounter then they have it beaten almost before initiative is rolled. On the other hand, when they get caught completely by surprise, then there are usually heavy casualties, often meaning that they go into negative HP.

What is interesting that when they were first level they were able to take on a CR10 encounter against 12 wolves (albeit without the +1 bonus to the bite damage) despite being caught by surprise, with minor wounding and a single character going down to negative HP.

I think that I have made them too confident in their own abilities, so much so that they do not run from the massive encounters that I throw against them, and end up with good dice rolls that somehow pull them through.

My question therefore is really two fold. Firstly, how the heck do I inspire the fear of the monsters again into them without killing the entire of the party.

Secondly, how the heck do I resolve that they have captured the Stag Lord alive, stripped him of all his possessions and now want to send him to Restov to stand trial there?

Part of me simply wants to give them a much larger reward, and they have certainly deserved it with the amount of work that they have carried out, wiping out all of the bandit problems without actually dealing with any of the side quests, and convinced that the beautiful boar Tuskgutter is actually the bear from the temple.

It varies wildly, but going up a level every three sessions is a fairly brisk pace in my experience. That's the rate that's used in Pathfinder Society organised play.

I tend to use the Medium experience track, although have been known to throw it to one side when needed and rule things on a more adhoc basis. Really the best answer is that you need to speak to your GM and figure it out between the two of you. There is no hard and fast rule

I will back Alaric's Vote for the monarchy with chosen successor, with the proviso that if a direct successor is not chosen before the monarchs death then the council chooses.

I would like a Lawful Good Kingdom, or at least a lawful Neutral one.
Bronwyn is spending 300gp on his new bow that I am crafting for him.

Personally i would wish a patron god of Erastil for the lands. Any evil deity or worshipper thereof I would like kicked out of our kingdom.

Thank you for the answer Alaric. I think then that our courtrooms might suddenly find they are hard to lie in by anyone who is there.

My vote is for either a straight monarchy or for a peoples' republic with overriding control vested in the one person. Am exploring as already mentioned, and will post what I want in terms of equipment ordered soon. It consists mainly of a better melee weapon only, either with the grayflame magical property or something similar.

Also, how would one go about enchanting an area permenantly with a zone of truth spell that has been somehow metamagicked to be more powerful? Something in the lines of DC20 or 25 rather than just the 15 that it currently is?

@Troubleshooter Thank you for your response, however, I'm failing to see how the Freedom of Movement example you have given is "similar" or relevant at all. To your other point regarding the cure spell: I am saying is that a non-magical condition would simply never occur. Stating "cure spells would remove the condition" assumes that it has already transpired which it never would have.
I think his point is that a cure spell would remove the condition from non-regenerating people.

Ultimately the reason for the fatigued condition and the like is not due to damage perse, but more that your body can only give you a certain amount of energy before at the cellular level there is simply nothing left to give. Therefore, you end up with the fatigued condition or the exhausted condition until you sleep and rest and such like. Therefore, regeneration would not work to my understanding because it cannot regenerate the energy that you have extracted from food. Therefore, regeneration and similar effects cannot be used to make an eternally running or moving character.

Khrovin once more listens to the points that Brett and Alaric were bandying between one another. That Alaric had so much patience for Brett was remarkable, and that they both had such a grasp on the minutia that he had personally not even thought of was also slightly intimidating. Still, there were other matters to discuss with this new kingdom they were trying to make, and there seemed to be so little time left really. With the Stag Lord dead, there was a power vacuum within the lands, and it needed filling quickly before someone stole the initiative and set themselves up in the man's image.

I would join you in the surveying of these lands Ariarh and Kae, if it were not for the fact that I have so little comprehension as to how to formally survey anything. Still, the ride might do me some good. If you will have me, I will come with you. Perhaps you can teach me a little

Capital punishment is fine, but do we really want to be that harsh with everyone? I'd say 3 strike rule, or only on a repeat offenses, but for the first one or two, there is forced labor, then execution, except for a few very severe crimes.
I made mention of an idea about punishment in my prior posting. I suggested that not all offences should be brought to a "court" or incur a heavy penalty (I won't reiterate it all here, again.) It's a few postings previous to this one. I agree with you, each crime should be weighted/judged on their own merits.

Yes, I agree with the idea that minor crimes should be dealt with at a local level by someone who is sworn to uphold our laws. What laws they uphold is also however something that needs to be looked into.

I do not agree however with the idea of making the capital punishment the last resort as it were. If someone can be proved to have premeditated a crime such as murder, then that should be dealt with in the same terms in my opinion. The same with rape and other crimes in the same vein as these two.

Seems like it should work

ANy other suggestions

Death penalty should not be ruled out. Capital crimes should include any violent crime where premeditation can be proven. That includes rape, murder and the like. Assassination should be a very bad bad bad thing.

Taxes I would suggest at 10% of income at years end. Some subsidies and the like should be available for trades such as farmers and the like.

I like the idea of the layers structure, means that in theory we do not have to micromanage.

Elect people for a term of 2 years, with a maximum of 2 terms consecutively.

Whilst Alaric will have final say on matters due to being king and all, I believe that the idea that in theory we all have equal weight in discussions is possibly the right way to go.

The second is a matter of funding for the religious direction. I am looking at helping the creation of this settlement, but these things are not cheap. Also, I want to create a brand new temple for Erastil on a place that in the far distant past once held one. The site is fairly well kept, but would need significant work, both in terms of materials, but also in the terms of skilled craftsmen. I would ask if you could do me a great favour in petitioning on my behalf for these materials.

There are other matters that are close to my heart, although currently I do not feel right putting these thoughts to paper. Perhaps when we meet each other once more.

Male Human Cleric 3/Paladin 1

It would seem then that we have another foe out there that potentially wishes us ill. Still, what is new eh? Khrovin's more flippant remark attempts to hide a deep-seated worry.

Male Human Cleric 3/Paladin 1

I have no foul intentions against any within this party, not even Brett Rowan who quizzed me so strongly about what it was that I stood for. If it would make my party feel more safe around me, then I will surrender both my armour and weapons to them until such a date that they feel I can be trusted with those same articles once more. I will also refrain from spell casting of any kind if they so wish it, up to and including the channelling of my dear Erastil's power. The only thing I will have to do with a weapon is to finish the bow that I have been making for Kae.

Your concerns are indeed valid, and I believe the extreme measures that I have offered freely are therefore warranted. I know a little of the cleric that came before me, although very little has really been told other than that she left in bad circumstances.

In the meantime, what can you tell me about this Scarlet Brotherhood? Is there anything that I can do to help research the way to destroy them once more, but so completely that they can never rise once more.

Khrovin completes what he was saying before offering his weapons first to Kae and then to the Lord Aliento. Once one of them takes the weapons, he will begin to remove his armour, once piece at a time, handing it once again to either Kae or the Lord Aliento. He attempts to keep his dignity throughout, although it may well be difficult.

In fact, it was he who dealt the killing blow the the Bearded Devil that the Baron's dark priest summoned. It was quite impressive." I was unfortunately unable to land a blow against the creature, but managed to slay the abomination's summoner."

Khrovin looks slightly bashful at this praise that has been heaped upon him. What he did with the dispatching of the devil and the like he did because it was required. For him it has been as natural as breathing. That Kae had taken so little of the credit for himself was strange, for if Kae had not been flanking the devil on many occasions, using his talents to distract the creature, then many of Khrovin's mighty swings would not have hit. The slaying of the Stag Lord and the demon were a joint effort, and none of us could have done it without the rest of us. Truly the sum of our skills was greater than the individual parts. I fight well, and have some skill with healing, be the source magical or through the use of common herbs and the like. With weapons I am skilled with the sword and the bow, although my sword work needs much practise

Khrovin's own smile grew wider at the fact that Ariarh slipped back so easily among the people at the trading post.

She would do well as the queen of this place, and yet something tells me that Alaric will take the role of King. I will not cede Ariarh to him. Although is it possible that I might be a better man to lead these lands than he? Nay, that is a treasonous thought, I should cast it from my mind.

The horses were soon well looked after, and just as the party begins to wind down, the flute once more comes out and Khrovin performs as best as he can to raise spirits further. He throws himself a little more into the music than normal, seeking to instil comfort and security and the feeling of what it is to love someone into the music.

He wonders what the world might have in store for him and his friends in the future, and the challenges that they might face.

Brett and Alaric turns to you all, watching you stand around looking at the folk, though none of you speaking to any of them directly. Then, Brett and Alaric head inside Oleg’s, taking the rather rotund man by his arm and lead him inside to chat. Anuk-su accompanies Alaric with a sense of purpose, though she pauses to give a courteous bow to the Ustalvians who stand there looking on.

You can see that Aliento’s eyes widen in surprise at her presence, then narrow coolly, and he whispers something to Sir Dashan, who looks surprised and nods.

Seeing that the group is content to stand and smile; waving at them and occasionally drink a drink, the caravan and outriders will begin to disperse and let you bask in the remains in their warming glow.

Khrovin will slowly play on the flute, hoping that Ry will begin a song of some kind and continue the celebration, for it would be a shame for the celebrations to finish so early.

Khrovin will gently kiss Ariarh and mention to her that he will go and take care of both of their horses. Mentioning that she might be better helping with the rest of the group to get lodgings and perhaps work through the state of affairs with Oleg. He means well, after the long days riding he wants nothing less than for Ariarh to get some rest and sleep. He keeps to himself for a little while, taking care of the little things, polishing saddles and such like. He feels a little out of place with the proceedings as the party reunites with the rest of the party.

Where can I sit and work on the bows? I believe that I already know just how to get the mechanical draw weight into the bows.

Khrovin listens intently to all of the discussion about guards and the border patrol, agreeing with the idea of the guards, and most certainly seeing that they could be a useful resource for a warning system for the towns and other settlements that we wish to make one day. That the demonic presence was actually what killed the Stag Lord was in its own right little to write home about really, for the end result that had been wanted was achieved.

More research was needed as to why the demon was summoned, and whether there were specific weapons that might be of greater use to one who would fight the demons.

The only thing that he would not stand for was deception of the people however. They had not been the ones who had killed the Stag Lord, although the argument that their presence had killed him was an intriguing one.

In the meantime, his personal plan was to write to Anor, continue his suit with Ariarh, and make the bows that he had promised both Bronwyn and Kae.

I will be swapping out my own breastplate armour for the masterwork breastplate if there are no objections to that course of action. Other than that, its a case of restocking the 5 or 6 arrows I am missing, and grabbing about a weeks worth of food. The sword I gained from Kae I believe to be a masterwork great sword. I had an idea to get the trappers kits etc, but they are looked after, and if Ry has already grabbed the potions then again, Khrovin will cede them to her. Channel energy and my own sacred hands do a pretty decent job of keeping you all alive so far

To Ariarh

Do not get my wrong, I do not wish for you to hold your tongue at all. Your insight into a situation might be the very one that could avert disaster. I am most likely the one at fault in this situation for it was I who stated that we are butting heads in the manner that we do. For me it was simply a case of stating that whilst we have very different opinions, I will always listen to your insight. Hence why I will be at your side on the journey to Oleg's, and if you allow it, far beyond that.

To all.
The title of Father Khrovin works well enough for me, and whilst I am more than content to take the majority of the burden for the religious direction of these lands, I know that I would only feel comfortable doing that in conjunction with Ry. If there is ever a hospital made in our lands, then I believe my particular skill set, in conjunction with Ry's would also leave us to be perhaps the best to look after the healing of the sick and wounded. However, we must also be careful to not leave ourselves too stretched out. Bah, these are discussions that we can have over the many hours that we will while away as the winter snows come and go. For now, I will happily tend to us and any of those that ally ourselves to us and our cause.

Will work out spells soonish, but until I post otherwise, assume the previous spells are simply re prepared.

I was editing my previous posting when you were replying. :) Would Khrovin assist Ariarh with the journal that contains the hybrid experiment information as well?

Khrovin will assist Ry with anything and everything that she wants help with.:D

This is in relation to the Book 1 Summary the GM sent us via email. Ariarh would like to bid for the following items: dragon amulet, 1 CLW potion and 1 set of healing herbs. She will also wish to read the following books over winter: Lencher's Journal (50 hours of study, which she has already started) and the Tome of Potions and Elixirs (50 hours of study).

Khrovin would like to put in a bid for the masterwork breastplate and any potions that are left over. He will happily cede the amulet back to Ariarh. He would also be working with Ariarh on both the Tome and Lencher's journal.

superiority for a pick of two of them would not be a terrible idea, I'd say. it's cheaper, and i think you can add stats to it as time goes on and funds become available.

That's true enough I suppose. Would most likely pick cha and wis. I have a fair amount of skill points, but the other two are my main stats.

Male Human Cleric 3/Paladin 1

So long as Alaric isn't the diplomat then I am happy to be fair!

The rebuild is more in terms of the feat selection, because as a cleric3/paladin1, some of the feats I had chosen should not have been available to me at the time. The stats and the like I am happy with, although a headband of mental perfection +6 would be nice. Only issue is that it costs 144,000 gold. It does give me +6 to Int, Wis and Cha though...

There are spells that can be used to make the bodies of the dead much harder to reanimate, although I would have to wait at least till the morning to be able to prepare any of them. In the meantime, the idea of burning the body till it is mere ash is usually enough to prevent most types of magic that would bring back a body from the dead.

I was planning on moving some of the equipment onto the cart and off. The trade goods didn't factor into the equations, but anything that isn't of immediate use was going to just be so much clutter

I could not agree with you more Khrovin. This place is perfect. I hope you will all forgive me but I have made a promise to Ariarh that I hope you will allow me to keep. I promised her that the first city would be named after a friend that she lost. Therefore I hope you will join me in naming this place Saravale. Alaric will bow to Ry and then help Khrovin load the cart...or atleast he will direct his Unseen Servant to do it.

I too have knowledge of this friend of Ariarh's, and thus gladly join you in the naming of this place as Saravale. May its fields always be bountiful, it's citizens happy, and the trade routes productive.

Hey Waiph, I have craft wondrous item now so if you want something crafted and have the resources let me know what it is. I also plan on taking craft magic arms and armor but that is mostly so that I can get craft Golem *squeals with glee* ...ahem...sorry I don't know what came over me lol. I won't be getting golem until 9th though at the earliest because I am taking Leadership at 7th. Not set in stone that I am taking craft arms or golem but as of right now thats the plan.

I am working on the basic craft of bows, but will happily take the craft magic arms and armour. It makes more sense for my character, and means that you can focus on other feats etc that might interest you. As it is, Khrovin is about to get almost completely rebuilt because of issues that I have found make him an illegal character. Selective channeling will find its way onto the feat list though you will be glad to know

Indeed, keeping the Kobolds as our personal secret might indeed be to our favour for the moment at least. If they were to stay here, then we could well be back within 2 days at the most with more men to support this area. Let us load as much as we can on the cart and then move on to Oleg's. Each moment we dally is a moment that we might yet fail.

Turning to Alaric Thank you for your kind words Alaric, I came to these lands for a purpose that is entirely my own, and alas I have had no luck in completing it. Perhaps with this land being ours now I might be able to devote a little more time to it.

In the meantime, have you thought about where to place the first city of our kingdom? If it were down to me, I would actually place it on this very spot. Did we not fight hard and furiously in order to claim it as our own? It is a heavily built fortress, and should this land that we call our own come under attack we would be in the right place to defend it from almost all those who would wish us ill.

Khrovin then proceeds to work hard to fill the cart with as much as it can take, and then sits and begins once more poring over the charts and blueprints for the bows that he is to make for Bronwyn.

The last of the bandits fell swiftly enough and whilst the bearded devil was a much harder proposition, Khrovin's skill, and much help from his new friends eventually dispatched the nightmare beast. One final exaltation to Erastil provided much of the healing that the group needed, although Sir Bronwyn was still a sickly white colour. When more closely inspected, the savage wounds that he had taken were deep and bleeding freely with some kind of taint from the beast that had finally been slain. Quick action for several minutes was needed before the healing potions and spells that both he and Ariarh possessed were enough to stabilise his condition.

With the immediate panic over his mind went back to the one who had captivated his soul and heart so swiftly. Ariarh was only very lightly hurt, and indeed the channelling of holy energy direct from Old Deadeye had seen to her most critical wounds. Khrovin was glad that the worst of the combat had been raging around Brett, Kae and himself. He looked at Ariarh for just a moment, but that moment dragged itself out till it felt like a year. A good year, with bountiful harvest. The light gained a lighter, softer quality, and Khrovin moved swiftly to Ry’s side. Sheathing his weapons, he wrapped an arm around her slim beautiful waist, holding her gently and gazing into her eyes. The fire that she had mentioned in an earlier conversation was back, and he longed to claim her as his own. To propose that they throw convention and tradition away and become man and wife in the near future, or at least become betrothed.
A subtle voice within him plead for caution however, reminding him that Ry was only young, and their acquaintance had been for such a short time that his chances of winning this suit were minimal. He listened to it, and so simply kissed Ry. A long, slow kiss, light and tender, and a deep sense of longing and of how right the situation was came over him. She was truly his strength, with her he felt right. The world around him made more sense, and he felt more at peace with himself and his quests than perhaps ever before.

His other arm wrapped itself around Ry’s waist, so she was encircled in his strong arms. He wished that she was closer, that his breastplate was not stopping him from pulling her closer still. He wanted to have her close enough that their hearts would be beating in synchrony. He pulled back ever so slightly from the kiss, and then slowly kissed a little lower, making his way round to the beautiful crease between neck and ear that she had. He whispered in her ear that he was glad she was still alive, for he would have been devastated if he was no longer able to speak with her about the ways of the world around them, and of their plans for the future of the lands around them, and the people contained within it.

It is good to know you are safe Ry, the world around you and I both seems to somehow be a better place now that we have dealt with this small part of what ails it.

He kisses her once more, and then motions towards the carnage around them. We should search this place for what we can, and then get the hell out of here. I fear that this is not a good place to be right now, for in our weakened state, and with so much of the keep unexplored we would be easy prey for whatever would befall us. Let us finish our business here and then get out and back to Oleg's. I sense that this is a time to rejoice, and my heart knows it without a doubt that a corner has been turned in these lands, but so much could yet go wrong. He went to the body of the cleric and Stag Lord, searching them both thoroughly.

Perception check to find anything of interest on the bodies, and taking 20 if I am able to. Gives me a result of 24. Anything I find will be stored in saddlebags for sorting out later. Similar process with the other bodies. After that, grab the bodies and put them together in a single area, then say some minor last rites asking Erastil to take mercy upon these men and take them into his service.

Small talk with each of the party members, double checking whether everyone is ok and double checking for any hidden wounds or anything of the sort that wasn't obvious earlier.

[b]We are all in fairly decent shape at the moment, if a little depleted in terms of spells and the like. The towers from earlier, we went through them, but never really properly searched them. If there is a little time on the way back, I would suggest we perhaps take a look into it, for who knows what might be hidden in them. Also, this garrison is too large for just the 10 men that we found here, it's almost as though there are more of these men that we might have to fight. I am no leader, but I suggest we search them for anything that might help us otherwise we might never recover those lost treasures.

Khrovin looks around to the others for their opinion of his plan, and spends many long moments looking once more at Ry, his eyes yearning.

Hi guys,
Finally got my university timetable more or less sorted out. The only real day I would be able to do is thursday, simply because of not having university the next day. I will have to call myself out from this combat therefore, because I have a pretty full day tomorrow, and its an early start. Sorry

Actually, Khrovin, you cannot hit the bandits on the left. If you look where you are in the map, you are not currently in their line of attack. This is why bandits 1 and 2 aimed for Ryul and Brett, and Bandits 3 and 4 aimed for you. Bandits 1 and 2 are on the left side.

In either case, your shot will miss, as you have not rolled high enough to strike your target. You can move to shoot, though, if you want, but this will involve pushing you and your horse into an angle of attack.

Bandits 1 and 2 have the Purple angle, 3 and 4 have the blue angle. You are currently in 3 and 4's angle, but if you move back, you will be in all four angle. If you move forward, you will not be able to be hit; though your friends will.

I should add, this information is for everyone. That said; what do you do everyone else. Khrovin, your shot still misses, just keep it in mind for future shots, though.

Addendum: If and when you get inside the towers, I will make the stairways more clear for you all to see.

Ok my mistake. Will be shooting at 4 then. It makes little to no difference because I miss anyway, but hey ho

So when all this business with the ustalavians is done, what will we do? We could stablish ourselves in Oleg's post until the winter finishes, but will our food stores last that long?

Surely the first thing would be to send word to Restov and Brevoy of our success, and then huddle together and deal with the winter and dwindling food stores as best we can. Of course, with the bow that I plan to make you, you and I could go hunting for fine elk and the like so as to feed us all. That is if you feel up to the challenge?

Ariarh:

Celestial As is yours for me. May they burn forever bright for us both/Celestial

Khrovin looks to Ariarh once more, considering long and hard the journey's undertaken to get here. The friend that he lost and is searching for, and how life had truly thrown him a very different path for him to tread than he had ever thought possible. Before this path, he had never thought about sharing life with another person. He had never thought much of the future. Now, there was a future with a beautiful woman. It would be a hard path to tread, for there would be many who would see that happiness torn apart. Khrovin felt up to the challenges though, for with Ariarh by his side, their capabilities were seemingly endless.
When the lands were settled, he dreamed of children with her, although this would be something that he would have to broach with Ariarh as and when the time came.

There was much to be said that they had good friends in both Alaric and Brett, although neither completely trusted him yet. He would have to go to a tavern with them some time and drink to their health. He could think of none better to have by his side when riding into battle. Oh the songs that would be sung and played to their honour and efforts in the years to come. But first, this battle had to be won for the side of good. Then he could retreat into the temple, and work on building a house for himself and Ariarh whilst tending to the needs of the people that would come. If Anor could make it, then he would feel more comfortable in his role, but that was a long shot, Anor was getting old now, and who knew when he might feel able to travel all that distance?

Male Human Cleric 3/Paladin 1

Ariarh:
Khrovin holds Ry's hand for a long moment, enjoying the simple human contact. Thinking of what Brett would say if he saw them now brought a smile to his face, and he kissed Ry once more, but on the cheek this time. If this is madness, then I do not wish to ever be sane
