Kaylee sighs at the fur sample. "Well, it doesn't look like this fur belongs to any dogs around here. In fact, it doesn't look like it belongs to any animal that I have ever seen before. Must be from something more exotic than your average pet. Guess we will have to send the fur off along with the synthetic acid to be analyzed in depth at the off world lab."

Kaylee finally looks up from her work to acknowledge the newcomer. "Welcome Marcus, my name is Kaylee Veridian. We have quite the little mystery going on around here."

Frustrated at getting no leads with the acid for now, Kaylee will also take a look at the hair sample to see if she can at least help identify it.

Helping to analyze the hair sample: 8d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 2, 1, 6, 6, 1, 5) = 32

"I wonder how easy it is to get a hold of synthetic acid around here."

How long does it take us to send samples out to the lab for more information?

Kaylee wanders over to a terminal to see if she can find information on the availability of acids or the components to create one.

"I will agree that we do need to discuss the methods that we use to gather information and question witnesses. The main thing is that I am really uncomfortable with anyone going off alone. It seems unnecessarily risky since we have yet to determine what is going on exactly and how many perps we may be dealing with. Plus, if someone else had gone with Hoss, we would have another persons perspective of what happened and may better understand the miscommunication that must have happened between him and the shopkeeper."

"And what about the break-ins? Has any happened while we have been here?"

Kaylee follows the Sheriff with the others into the room with the cell and remains quiet for the moment while she tries to analyze the shopkeepers words and behavior as she tries to figure out what he is actually frightened off and if he seems guilty of anything.

"We really appreciate all your help Sheriff. I just hope we can use the info we've been getting to figure out some useful leads on whatever is happening around here. After we pose a few questions to the vet, we should probably consider getting some rest ourselves, right after a good meal of course since we seem to have skipped lunch today. Been so busy running around I didn't even think about it."

Kaylee asks for the name of the vet and then has no more questions for the lady.

Once back in the vehicle with the sheriff and Phineus: "I'd like to talk to the vet just to see if he had any idea if it was a weapon or something natural that caused the scratch. I'm wondering if maybe someone had tried to run the dog off from something they were trying to hide and then finally gave up and killed the dog when it came back."

"We'd like to go ahead and take a look at those bills then, if you don't mind. I think that after that, I am out of questions for now. We'd like to thank you for taking the time to talk to us Mrs. Alenin."

After they make note of the names on the bills, Kaylee nods to the Sheriff to indicate that they are done here.

Once in the vehicle: "Sheriff, we'd like to speak to Philip Van Hooser next, if you know his location."

Kaylee takes a seat and speaks in a low and calm voice, trying to do her best not to further agitate the upset woman.

"Mrs. Alenin, please know that we are here to do our best to find out what happened to your husband and that any information you can give us will help us with our search."

"Now, we were given to understand that your husband was often sent out to work on unstable dig sites since he is the best here at that sort of job. Did he happen to mention anything to you about where he was heading last or for whom he was working for? Perhaps we could have a look around his office to see if he had made any notes about the job?"

"We don't wish to intrude upon you, but being able to find the site that he disappeared from would really help our investigation into finding him."

"Thank you Sheriff. We'd appreciate a ride out to question a the reporters of missing people and dog. I believe that was Angelina Sanchez, Alise Alenin and Philip Van Hooser."

"First though, what can you tell us about any recent excavations being done?"

Kaylee shrugs. "I have no idea why they just up and head off without a partner or at least giving us notice and details of exactly where they are heading."

"Heading back to the Sheriff's office sounds fine. We can let the others know via the wristcomps where we are going and that they can meet us there if they want."

Kaylee looks down at her wristcomp the same time Phineus does and sends off a quick message of her own.

"Grabbing a bite to eat real quick, can you give us the location of where you are heading? No one should be heading off to investigate leads without letting at least one other person know their location. Just in case, you know..."

She will sit in the diner and order a light breakfast.

Kaylee nods at Phineus. "I should be able to figure out who has the know-how to build that elevator as long as the Sheriff can provide us with any personnel logs. Though I worry that may give us too many suspects unless we can think of other ways to narrow down the list. Knowing the exact timing of the thefts and disappearances would help with eliminating alibis. I would also like to know the skills possessed by the people who disappeared. It is possible they were taken for a purpose, though what purpose a dog could serve I have no idea."

"It is too bad the crime scenes are so spread apart, I was rather hoping to be able to narrow out search area."

I do love watching procedural television shows, so don't be surprised if I have Kaylee do stuff from them, like a giant map with red marker.

Will wait with Phineus on the posting at the diner area. Though before that, Kaylee has another comment on the research.

When working with Quinton on where the elevator could be built at, Kaylee has another thought that she voices to the group.

"Perhaps we could request a look at the personnel records of the colony, assuming that they have any, and attempt to figure out who has the working knowledge of how to build one of those elevators."

Is it possible for one person to build such an elevator? Would you like some kind of roll from Kaylee to determine how many people it could take to build it?

During the late night research session, Kaylee goes old school and prints up big maps of the area to pin to the wall. Taking a red marker out of one of her bags, she consults the list of missing items and persons and marks down their locations on the map, along with the estimated times they happened. If nothing else, she figures it may be handy for later to compare to alibis when they finally get any suspects. For now though, they can use it to most efficiently map out the route they wanna take when they head out to physically investigate the areas.

Once the group realizes that the missing items could potentially be used to build a high-capacity elevator, Kaylee does some research in order to determine what other parts may be needed for it and where they are located. "If someone is trying to put together a high-capacity elevator and still needs any parts, perhaps we could stake out the areas where they may try to steal more parts from."

How large is a high-capacity elevator? Trying to determine how easy/hard it would be to conceal the building of one.

After making notes on the missing people, including the locations they went missing from , the people who reported them missing and the home addressees of both the missing and the reporters, Kaylee finally succumbs to the long day and falls asleep on a couch for a few hours.

After waking up, she notices that two of their number have gone out and replies Phineas's comments:

"At least going out in pairs would seem more sensible. Since something is obviously going on, we should definitely exercise more caution. I also think that not being so obviously heavily armed would be a good thing too for now. We don't want people too scared to talk to us since we have a lot of questions that still need answered."

Kaylee's stomach grumbles a bit loudly at his mention of food. "Yeah, food sounds like a really good idea right now. I think I forgot to eat anything for dinner yesterday once we started getting into researching the situation."

Were we issued rebreather masks with our gear before we came down? If not I suppose we need to see about getting some just in case.

Kaylee will join the others in following the directions given and heads on over to the Sheriff's office. She will give the door a knock and then open it if it is unlocked.

Kaylee departs the elevator as well, pulling her roll-a-long suitcase behind her. She starts heading on down Main Street as well, looking about at all the buildings they are passing and reading any street signs posted.

Were they given contact info for the sheriff? Or were they able to locate any maps on the trip down here of the town that would indicate where the office might be?

Kaylee shrugs and smiles at the surly man. "It is always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared. I really hate to be in a situation and wishing for something that I wish I had brought. Sadly that thinking extends to everything and I am sure I overpacked my clothing and tools as well."

Kaylee is wearing her uniform. It may be slightly obscured by her jacket, but she does have her badge hanging visibly from a lanyard around her neck.

Kaylee sighs as the door slides shut. "You would think they would be a bit more friendly since they sent for us."

Kaylee shrugs at the question. "Mom was an engineer and Daddy was a lawman. I guess I just inherited both their interests and had the bad-luck to stumble onto some people doing something they shouldn't."

Kaylee sighs and looks over to Quinton. "You are right about there being very little information. I haven't been able to find anything matching my search criteria here. I suppose that any in-depth research will just have to wait until we reach the colony itself and have access to their data."

As the topic of weapons comes up, Kaylee looks over to the two talking about it. "What to do with weapons is a good question. Though I always carry around my pistol and a knife in a boot sheath, I wouldn't mind taking a shotgun or rifle and some form of non-lethal subduing equipment. So I suppose we should request a portable weapons safe to take with us."

While researching at the terminals, Kaylee thinks aloud. "Perhaps we should try mixing search criteria? Such as trying to determine if the timing of any disappearances coincides with the drilling of new tunnels. That may at least let us know if there could possibly be any connection between the two. Plus we could start our investigations with those disappearances first since there is bound to be at least some unrelated crimes in a colony that size."

She will attempt to see if she can get any results with her search criteria on the terminals here.

"Do we have any background information on Sheriff Fielding?"

Is it possible to view local news reports that Presidia broadcasts on the terminals here or will we need to wait until we reach it?

"Do we know how stable their tunnels are and if there have been any reports of seismic activity? A few collapsed tunnels and unmarked air shafts could easily account for missing animals and people. The missing gear could just be a thief."

I figure that Kaylee would just carry around one spare clip for her gun. Can I get a holster for my gun that has room to store the spar clip on it?

I will also be carrying around a knife located in a boot sheath and some kind of current version of a multi-tool.

I'd like a first aid kit and a small toolbox of some basic engineering tools.

Kaylee was born and raised on Ganymede. She is also of mixed decent, a little bit of everything in her bloodline basically.

She looks to be in her mid-twenties, stands at about 5'4" and has long dark brown hair and hazel eyes.

Kaylee is fairly easygoing and friendly.

Her main interest/hobby/occupation is engineering. She loves to tinker around with stuff and enjoys taking things apart just so that she can figure out how to put them back together again.

Haven't worked out the backstory yet, but the main inspiration for personality will be Kaylee from Firefly. The crunch for the character complete, minus a few more quirks to be added as the backstory is worked on.

"Not a problem Arduino, it seems like these things are more vulnerable to brute force rather than your magic. Be careful looking it over, some things still twitch after they're dead. I suppose we best be careful, there could be more of those things infesting the ship."

Kaylee finishes looking over the room.

Kaylee will once again swing at the creature with her mace.

"Geez, what is up with all these things? Did we run into their breeding ground or something?" Kaylee advances on the creature with her mace and takes a swing at it.

Any way to get into a flanking position with Ishirou?

Kaylee nods at fish. "Allrighty, I'll head on to the captain's cabin first. I'll give a holler too if I run into any problems."

D'oh. Forgot that. Nevermind that last bit about talking to her, but still checking those two cabins first.

Kaylee looks over to Aerys. "My advice would be to check the Captain's cabin. He most likely kept his own stash where the rest of us couldn't get to it. I plan on searching that room first, good chance he'll have some chart or maps there too. I can keep an eye out for any bottles. After that I'll head over to the navigator's cabin."

Is the boat straight out in the water from their current position or up or down the coast?

Kaylee wants to head out to the ship and look for any maps or chats so that they can figure out where exactly there are and what direction they should be traveling in.

"Well, some maps and charts would be great for figuring out where we are, which in turn will help us figure out where we should go to reach civilization. Perhaps some of us should head out there now for charts and the rest set up camp? I really don't want to worry about anything useful being washed out to sea with the next high-tide. We may also be able to scavenge some food and other useful items and check on the conditions of any of the longboats."

"Well, for where we are, I could probably get a better idea at night from the stars. Though our best chance for figuring out our exact location would be to head back out to the wreck of the ship and see if we can find any navigational charts or maps. I'm also hoping to find my compass somewhere in this pile of stuff."

Kaylee sighs is frustration as she looks at the remains of their ship on the rocks. "I'd like to know just went wrong. The captain had made this run dozens of times and I can't believe he'd take the ship close enough to shore to wreck regardless of how odd he'd been acting lately."

Shaking her head, Kaylee stalks up to the pile of belongings and sorts through it for her stuff. "Don't worry too much about water Krokod, I have small spell prepared to create some as needed. I just need to find something to hold it in. Anyone find any waterskins yet?"

"What I'd really like to know is, where the hell is the ship?"

Kaylee stalks down the beach to the edge of the water and peer out into the ocean and then up and down the coast, trying to spot any sign of the ship.

Now that she's not right next to the creature, Kaylee will stand up and then fling off another icicle at the creature.

"What the hell are we doing on a beach with these ugly critters?"

"Ow!" Kaylee wakes up in surprise at the pain from the creature sting.

"What the hell is going on?" From her prone postion, Kaylee crabwalks backward 5 feet and then flings off an icicle at the thing that stung her.

Kayless gives a little groan. "I haven't gotten seasick since I was 13. It's more likely that Rambar used some fish that had already spoiled for the soup. He isn't always too careful about what he puts in his pots."

Kaylee shakes her head and speaks over to Arduino. "Best be careful who you mention that word around. People can get keelhauled for that kinda talk." I'd rather the captain not get wind of this kinda talk. It'd be bad for us...

Kaylee continues her conversation with Noro. "So, I'm still thinking of disembarking next port. See how quick I can get work on another ship. Maybe one with a less dangerous route."

I wasn't sure what to put as her ac or carrying capacity since I wasn't sure what equipment we'd be starting out with. Do we just assume we have everything at start and then adjust accordingly?

Also, do you want a separate listing of what Kaylee will be carrying on her person as she goes about her duties on the ship? Some of her gear will be left in her room since there wouldn't be any need to keep everything with her. For example, she'd leave her crossbow and trident in her room unless they're expecting trouble and just carry about her daggers and mace. If she was expecting to do any work up in the rigging she would bother with wearing her armor that day either.

For my skills, I usually only list which ones I have trained/have ranks in.

I put some information up in the header for you for quick reference.

I think I'm ready for a final review.

Kaylee's been a sailor for several years and Magnimar is an important port city, so Kaylee's likely to have been there various times in the past. It's likely enough they've run into each other in the past and Kaylee knew her as a hard worker even if she does have a short temper.
