Jotun is taking a peek through the other door, if he can get it open somewhat quietly (see last post.)

"Maybe the cup can be fixed?" Jotun asks hopefully, looking it over to see if maybe it can be hammered out to hold liquid again. If nothing of use is found (either by himself or the others), Jotun will move to the doors exiting the chamber and crack them open, taking a peek through to see what lies beyond. Trying to be quiet, of course. I'll make some rolls below to see if any stick. Scan (TN 15): 1d12 + 2d6 ⇒ (11) + (4, 4) = 19

Jotun nods slowly as he realizes what he's seeing. "Thieves, maybe? Come in through another way and dropped that chalice? I wonder if they're still around... Can you tell anything more from the tracks, Bain? Are we dealing with Men, or something else entirely?" Unable to help himself, the barding moves to pick up the golden chalice, looking it over carefully. Trying to determine it's value, but also, is it 'crumpled' as though something stepped on it? Or crushed it with brute strength?
Male Barding (Big Folk)| Endurance: 25/25 | Hope: 13/13 | Parry: 18 (w/ shield & sword combo) or 16 | Bold, Eager, Burglary, Prowess | Sword 2, Bow 1 | 'Fell' Longsword (can use 2-Handed), 5 Damage, 18 (20) Injury | Fatigue: 0 | Character Sheet
I think that Gandalf rune means auto success? I won't bother with a roll, as I can't hit the TN needed and a '12' has already been rolled. Jotun grins at Bain. "One of these days my friend, we shall make that journey to Khazad-dum. I should like to meet this Balin." The barding takes a look around, though his gaze keeps coming back to the golden chalice. It looks quite valuable...
Male Barding (Big Folk)| Endurance: 25/25 | Hope: 13/13 | Parry: 18 (w/ shield & sword combo) or 16 | Bold, Eager, Burglary, Prowess | Sword 2, Bow 1 | 'Fell' Longsword (can use 2-Handed), 5 Damage, 18 (20) Injury | Fatigue: 0 | Character Sheet
"If only we had a key..." Jotun mutters as he keeps working uselessly at the lock. Damn, totally forgot that scene! In my defense, it's been nearly 10 months... :)
Male Barding (Big Folk)| Endurance: 25/25 | Hope: 13/13 | Parry: 18 (w/ shield & sword combo) or 16 | Bold, Eager, Burglary, Prowess | Sword 2, Bow 1 | 'Fell' Longsword (can use 2-Handed), 5 Damage, 18 (20) Injury | Fatigue: 0 | Character Sheet
Their hard labor is rewarded by the magnificent sight of the gates - probably crafted by elves, the barding thinks as he gazes at the scenes depicted. His eyes fall upon the lock, and he smiles a bit. "Perhaps I can do something about this..." He ventures, drawing a set of lockpicks out of his pocket and going to work. Stealth (Lockpicks): 1d12 + 2d6 ⇒ (12) + (5, 5) = 22 vs DC 15 Not sure how Jotun's Burglary feature comes into play here. Does it give him additional dice? With that '12' it might not be necessary, but just in case it does I wanted to mention it.

Jotun shakes his head as he looks over the rubble. "We'll have to clear it, if we want to use the stairs. No telling how far down the blockage goes, though..."

Jotun nods tiredly in response to Bain, his muscles aching after that battle and his nerves a bit frayed after their brief encounter with the dark creature that definitely did not seem human. Elf? That didn't quite seem right either. Still, he manages a small and claps the dwarf on the back. "Indeed, we sent them running like cowardly dogs, did we not? Still, Waylon is right, we need to find our way inside or this has all been for naught." He turns to the hobbit and the elf. "We had precious little time to speak before the attack, but I count you both friend and stout companions. What brings you to this desolate place? Have you, by chance, found a way inside this ruin?" The barding is looking for a way into the place as well, but is perhaps distracted by the conversation. I'll try a Scan as well. Scan: 1d12 + 2d6 ⇒ (8) + (1, 4) = 13 vs TN 15

Jotun sets aside his sword, readies his bow and fires as he shouts after the fleeing figure. "Craven dog! Flee back to your dark lord and tell him of your cowardice! I am sure he will be most forgiving!" He mocks as the arrow shatters against a rock close to his target's head. 2d12 + 1d6 ⇒ (10, 2) + (4) = 16 [6] vs TN 15

Not one to back down from a fight, Jotun gathers his courage and shouts a battle cry as he charges forward to meet the dark warrior in combat! Using Forward Stance, will spend Hope along with the Bold feature again as well, to hopefully bolster this important attack! Longsword (+1d Forward Stance, +2d Bold/Hope): 1d12 + 3d6 + 2d6 ⇒ (10) + (4, 1, 5) + (1, 1) = 22 vs TN 15
A lot of nothing on those success dice (well, not nothing but no 6s), but it appears to be hit and I think that 10 on the feat die gives me a 'Piercing Blow' for my enemy to deal with! And Jotun's longsword is a Fell weapon (the 2 is already added in the stats above) - so I think that means the TN for her Protection test is 20? Protection 4d (3d [armor] +1d [helm])

Jotun's smile is positively vicious beneath his leather helm and he bangs his sword against his armor in response. "I choose Death! But for you and your dark allies! If I fall this day bringing that about, I will be smiling as I depart this world for the next one!"

Jotun takes a deep breath and cleans his blade before retrieving his shield, or perhaps one carried by one of their fallen enemies before readying himself for battle again. He turns to Bain, concern in his eyes. "Are you well enough to continue the fight, my old friend? These next foes seem dire indeed, by their countenance. But I am certain we will emerge victorious." He grins then, his teeth bared ferociously as he begins to work himself into the mindset for coming battle. Try and grab a shield, as I think mine was rent and damaged beyond repair? If not, no worries I'll continue to use the sword with a two-handed grip. Can I try to inspire Bain somehow to 'heal' him in some manner?

The battle rages on and Jotun eases up a bit to reserve his energy, though he maintains his offensively-minded stance. He focuses on his opponent, slashing with his blade to bring him down and tilt the odds to favor himself and his allies rather than the enemy... Again with Forward Stance, not spending Hope this time around, as I want to try and conserve what I have left - for the moment at least. We'll see how this round goes... With a fierce grin, his sword bloodied and ignoring the pain of his own wound thanks to the rush of adrenaline and the cries of the fallen enemy, Jotun calls out again to his comrades. "Fight on! Send the rest of these evil bastards running back to the darkness that spawned them!" The barding does his best to assist the wounded Bain with his foe. Sticking with Forward Stance, spending another Hope point along with the Bold feature. Looking to help Bain taking down his enemy, since his dwarven friend is so badly wounded. Longsword (+1d Forward Stance, +2d Bold/Hope): 1d12 + 3d6 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + (3, 2, 2) + (3, 3) = 17 vs TN 15
Well THAT time my Hope point was well spent! No rune dice though, alas... Still, that'll be the last Hope point I spend for the time being. Will save the remaining ones unless we REALLY get hammered down in the next round. Protection 4d (3d [armor] +1d [helm])

Though still outnumbered, at least Jotun and his allies have their barricade still in place, giving them at least some modicum of protection. Still, the barding gamely fights on with unflagging vigor even as blood flows from his bicep. In fact, he scarcely remembers taking the wound. Exhorting the others to keep up the fight, he slashes again with the heavy sword, wielding it with both hands! OK, wound taken, but will continue to take a Forward Stance and use another Hope point. Again, using Bold feature to get that extra dice on my 1 Hope point used this round. Longsword (+1d Forward Stance, +2d Bold/Hope): 1d12 + 3d6 + 2d6 ⇒ (7) + (6, 4, 2) + (1, 1) = 21 vs TN 15
Ugh, waste of a Hope point I guess, but that 6 is a boon at least. Going to use Heavy Blow with that Success roll to deliver additional damage - which I think is 6 (5 for my STRENGTH rating, and additional +1 for using the sword in a two-handed grip.) So that's 11 damage total, if I'm reading that correctly? Protection 4d (3d [armor] +1d [helm])
Male Barding (Big Folk)| Endurance: 25/25 | Hope: 13/13 | Parry: 18 (w/ shield & sword combo) or 16 | Bold, Eager, Burglary, Prowess | Sword 2, Bow 1 | 'Fell' Longsword (can use 2-Handed), 5 Damage, 18 (20) Injury | Fatigue: 0 | Character Sheet
With a howling war cry, Jotun lets go the hand strap of his shattered shield and takes a two-handed grip of his sword, slashing with fury at the enemies that threaten to surround them! Jeez, this is getting grim! Continue to take a Forward Stance and use another Hope point. Might as well not go down with anything left in my pocket, right? Will again use my Bold feature to get that extra dice on my 1 Hope point used this round - if that's allowed? Or can you only use your feature a limited amount during a battle? If that's the case, just drop that second (and last) d6 roll below. Longsword (+1d Forward Stance, +2d Bold/Hope): 1d12 + 3d6 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + (4, 2, 3) + (2, 5) = 20 vs TN 15

For Sargon: The elf tries to break out of the grapple with the pirate... So Brawling uses the highest combat proficiency of the character, but at a disadvantage (1d), so that'd be Sword at only 1d6, if my interpretation is correct. Being stuck in Forward Position though gives him back another 1d6. If all this is correct, the roll is below: Brawling: 1d12 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (11) + (4) + (2) = 17 Good Lord... Eye of Sauron? Really?
Male Barding (Big Folk)| Endurance: 25/25 | Hope: 13/13 | Parry: 18 (w/ shield & sword combo) or 16 | Bold, Eager, Burglary, Prowess | Sword 2, Bow 1 | 'Fell' Longsword (can use 2-Handed), 5 Damage, 18 (20) Injury | Fatigue: 0 | Character Sheet
Seeing Bain taking several brutal hits by the pirates and Sargon grappled by one of the enemy, Jotun shouts another inarticulate battle cry and hurls himself against the sailors with reckless abandon! Take a Forward Stance and use another Hope point, as things are starting to look a little desperate here. Will also use my Bold feature this time (as I mentioned in my last post) to get that extra dice on my 1 Hope point used this round. Longsword (+1d Forward Stance, +2d Bold/Hope): 1d12 + 3d6 + 2d6 ⇒ (10) + (3, 1, 3) + (2, 2) = 21 vs TN 15
Piercing Blow! No Success results though... that kinda stinks. But the Piercing Blow does extra damage, I think? Protection 4d (3d [armor] +1d [helm])

Well done, Padraig! My final roll will, of course, depend on what the GM thinks about Jotun using that Bold feature to get 2d out of his use of Hope. But if I can squeeze out yet another 1d6 for the Enhearten to boost that number even higher, here goes... Enhearten bonus dice 'Forward Stance': 1d6 ⇒ 4 For a possible total of 19? :)
Male Barding (Big Folk)| Endurance: 25/25 | Hope: 13/13 | Parry: 18 (w/ shield & sword combo) or 16 | Bold, Eager, Burglary, Prowess | Sword 2, Bow 1 | 'Fell' Longsword (can use 2-Handed), 5 Damage, 18 (20) Injury | Fatigue: 0 | Character Sheet
With another fierce shout, and trusting his armor and shield to protect him, the barding slashes again, trying to take down his immediate foe for good! Take a Forward Stance once again, spending 1 Hope point from my pool. GM, given that terrible roll on the Feat dice, can I use my Bold feature to grant an additional die on the Hope dice? That'd give me a shocking success if so, I do believe. Anyway, if allowed and pull victory from the jaws of defeat, I'll use that success die to Fend Off, granting a +2 to the Parry rating below. Longsword: 1d12 + 3d6 + 2d6 ⇒ (1) + (6, 2, 4) + (1, 1) = 15 vs TN 15
Protection: 4d (3d [armor] +1d [helm])
Bain, for the Protection Roll, roll a Feat die (d12) plus a number of Success dice (d6) equal to the PROTECTION value of your armor. In this instance, use the number PRIOR to the Weariness has set in. GM, the weapon list on pg 100 has it as 18 for the Injury score, isn't that correct? My own longsword is usually 16 when wielded one-handed, but it's a Fell Weapon, so that boosts it to 18.

Nice!! Too bad there were no rune results on those six sided dice rolls, as the Gandalf rune on the feat dice only means it's an automatic success no matter the TN - though with that result I doubt you could have failed in any case.
Male Barding (Big Folk)| Endurance: 25/25 | Hope: 13/13 | Parry: 18 (w/ shield & sword combo) or 16 | Bold, Eager, Burglary, Prowess | Sword 2, Bow 1 | 'Fell' Longsword (can use 2-Handed), 5 Damage, 18 (20) Injury | Fatigue: 0 | Character Sheet
Figuring that the barricade will give them only a brief advantage, Jotun presses that advantage and adds his own shout of "For the Dale!" as his stout companion also bellows a battle cry. Lifting shield and sword, the barding hacks into the front ranks with reckless abandon, looking to drop one of the wounded pirates. Take a Forward Stance as well. Sword: 1d12 + 3d6 ⇒ (8) + (3, 5, 4) = 20 vs TN 15

Jotun draws another arrow to string and lets fly hastily, missing the mark by a wide margin before dropping the weapon and taking up his shield and sword to attack the pirates that make it through the barricades they've set up. Bow: 1d12 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + (4) = 9 vs TN 15

Nice! So folks, roll that extra d6 we all get for Moderate Advantage, it might turn that miss into a hit! The TN you're using as a target is your STRENGTH TN, by the way (modified by the Parry rating of the enemy, though we won't know that number.) So the bow damage is 3, knocking the Endurance of two enemies down by 3 points, if I'm reading the rules correctly. I'll use those 'Rune' results to hit two, rather than try for a Piercing blow, because even if I used both of them I can't get my feat die result up to a 10 to make a Piercing Blow (I could get it to 9 if I used both, correct?)
Male Barding (Big Folk)| Endurance: 25/25 | Hope: 13/13 | Parry: 18 (w/ shield & sword combo) or 16 | Bold, Eager, Burglary, Prowess | Sword 2, Bow 1 | 'Fell' Longsword (can use 2-Handed), 5 Damage, 18 (20) Injury | Fatigue: 0 | Character Sheet
Jotun feels a chill go through him at the elf's pronouncement, but the barding sees no other choice but to continue with their ambush. He lets fly an arrow... Bow: 1d12 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + (6) = 11 vs TN 15 = Failure! ... and frowns as he misses the mark. OR (if we maybe have moderate advantage since cover for the targets is scarce AND they aren't suspecting an attack?) Moderate Advantage: 1d6 ⇒ 6 for a 17 vs TN 15 = Success! ... grins as the shot finds its target! IF that moderate advantage bonus die is allowed and it's a hit, I'll have two 'Rune' dice to spend. Can I take Widen Influence to hit more than one target or maybe Cancel a Failure for two others? Whatever works best to whittle these incoming pirates down fast!

Though he busies himself readying their defenses, Jotun takes a few moments to introduce himself to the elf and the hobbits. "I am Jotun, Son of Jungarr, and it would seem these Southerners are headed to this very ruin - though fortune allowed us to arrive first. And also to find you as well." He adds with a smile, though his expression quickly turns grim. "We must trust to hope that our meeting here will not be short-lived, and that together we can defeat this group headed our way. Perhaps afterward, we can exchange stories of how fate has brought us here together, but for now, it is time to fight." With that pronouncement, the barding removes his shield and leans it against whatever cover he will be using while using his bow so that he may grab it readily when the enemy is upon them and he must needs drop the bow in favor of the sword... Greetings all! And now, let's fight! I also like the idea of aiming first for their leaders - hopefully our arrows will be able to penetrate that heavy armor...

Apologies for delay. I'm here, just very busy at work of late with no time/energy to post. Feel free to bot me when needed and welcome to the newcomers! :)

Prisoners of those coming our way? Or heck, maybe they're already camped out in this ruin somewhere and just figuring out they have visitors?

Jotun Battle (TN 15): 1d12 + 2d6 ⇒ (12) + (5, 1) = 18 Well-versed in fortifying defenses, the barding does what he can to make it tough for the enemy to attack. He keeps the sword and shield near, but readies his bow to fire upon his foes as they get close...

Jotun grins at Bain. "I like it." He readily agrees, drawing his broadsword and hefting his shield as he dons his leather helm as well.

Jotun nods and gathers up his own gear to conclude their journey to the ruins as quickly as possible.

Good luck Tilly, I wish you and your family all the best as well. Also hope to see you return in the future! GM, that sounds like a great idea!

Though wary of the ranger at first, Oromar proves to be a boon companion and a helpful guide as they make their way through the wilderness. He bids farewell to the woods-savvy veteran when they part ways, taking his advice to heart. The journey isn't as exhausting as the one that they recovered from in Rivendell, but they have a long way to go yet. Jotun does his best to hunt game as they journey, doing what he can to keep everyone nourished and in good health. Travel: 1d12 + 2d6 ⇒ (8) + (2, 1) = 11 Ugh...

Jotun stops himself from sharing any meaningful looks with the others in the presence of this stranger - though Waylon in particular seems to trust him at least. Instead, the barding only shakes his head at Oromar's words. "Fell news indeed, friend Oromar. I am named Jotun, son of Jungarr, of Rivertown. Do these goblins and men of of the south seem to be in an alliance of some sort? Or are they simply moving at the same time? Perhaps they will only succeed in getting in each others' way, if that is the case." He adds hopefully. He keeps his thoughts to himself for now, but this all seems far too coincidental for Jotun. Likely these men of the south are in league with Gorlanc. And the goblins too? Perhaps...

Nice job, Tilly! GM, didn't realize that about the Special Success for Travel. That said, can Tilly use one of them for her roll? Should we claim one when we roll it or will you figure out what 'fits' best, given the situation? |
