Kankai clicked her tongue in amusement at Thetin.

"Yes, you seemed disappointed we would chose Irabeth even if you did like the choice. I have a book that I was forced to memorize that I think you would find quite enjoyable to hear. Maybe over the camp fire I can quote it chapter by chapter and let you memorize it."

Her eyes studied him. "It is called the Art of War. I had to be able to quote the entire thing even when engaged in battle. Ahh, to be a trainee again."

--------------------------

The next morning, before Dawn broke Kankai woke up Kyra and took her to a spot that the sun would touch with its first rays.

Kneeling she would hold Kyra's sword in her hands. Praying in her native tongue for Sarenrae's blessing to be upon the blade and its wielder.

As dawn approached she turned to Kyra.

"Kyra, you have granted me a great honor to speak with the blade and allow me to name it. I have fasted and spoke with it. Watched you dance and fight along side it. This is what I have learned."

Kankai plucked the feather that she had painted for this and slowly tied it to the hilt. The feather itself was painted but Kankai made it a point that Kyra couldn't see it yet.

"Redemption can be found in many places but, like the Phoenix that dances in the sky to celebrate its life before burning to ash, life must sometimes end in flames.

Take heart that the phoenix even in death is not gone forever, and a new life is formed. With this new life, there are new possibilities and a new chance to redeem their souls.

Considering Sarenrae's feather went into the making this blade I can understand why it chose the name it did.

Not many realize what a feather can do and how important it is. A single feather seems weak, and easy to snap by our standards. The opposite is true though. Feather's serve many purposes but flight feather's especially. On the down stroke of a wing, it presses against the air and allows lift and flight, but on the upstroke it is designed to give and allow air to flow around it. Both hard and soft, both cutting and comforting. Much like the steps of a dancer as they move through a dance.

Feather's are used for communication, keeping one warm, and even sometimes to warn others.

This blade does all of that and it is why it has chosen to awaken itself to you. It enjoys being in your hands and believes in you. It quite enjoys it when you dance with it and the passion you express. It makes it feel like it can fly again and you are a worthy soul to burn those that can not be redeemed so they have another chance in the next life."

Kankai hands the sheathed blade to Kyra.

"Draw the sword that will be your partner Kyra. Say hello to Dancing Phoenix."

The sun cresting the horizon hit the blade as she did so and as the feather twirled in the wind it showed the scene of a woman and a phoenix dancing together.

Stella shuddered as her halo turned bright pink tinged with red. Everything was bathed in its glow. While this hid her blush somewhat it did not hide the fact the tips of her ears were turning red.

Kleora:
"That is cheating. No whispering in the ear."
She whispered back.

Stella took deep breaths as she felt Mary comforting her.

Now it wasn't as bad as seeing her previous teacher disemboweled and .....

Stella murmured a rhyme in her head over and over again to get both images down in the depths of her mind.

In the far days, when every day was long,
Fear was upon me and the fear was strong,
Ere I had learned the recompense of song.

Creeds the discolored awed my opening mind,
Perils, perplexities - what could I find?
All the old terror waiting on mankind.

Even the gentle flowers of white and cream,
The rainbow with its treasury of dream,
Trembled because of an ungracious scheme.

And in the night the many stars would say
Dark things unaltered in the light of day:
Fear was upon me even in my play.

There was a lake I loved in gentle rain:
One day there fell a bird, a courtly crane:
Wisely he walked, as one who knows of pain.

Gracious he was and lofty as a king:
Silent he was, and yet he seemed to sing
Always of little children and the Spring.

Pity was in him for the weak and strong,
All who have suffered when the days were long
And he was deep and gentle as a song.

As a calm soldier in a cloak of grey
He did commune with me for many a day
Till the dark fear was lifted far away.

Sober-apparelled, yet he caught the glow:
Always of Heaven would he speak, and low,
And he did tell me where the wishes go.

Kinsfolk of his it was who long before
Came from the mist (and no one knows the shore)
Came with the little children to the door.

Was he less wise than those birds long ago
Who flew from above (He surely willed it so)
Bearing great happiness to all below?

Long have I learned that all his speech was true;
I cannot reason it - how far he flew -
Power is not terrible nor thunder-blue.

Sometimes, when watching in the white sunshine,
Someone approaches - I can half define
All the calm beauty of that friend of mine.

Nothing of hatred will about him cling:
Silent - how silent - but his heart will sing
Always of little children and the Spring.

Stella's halo glowed softly as she would touch Azariah's hands and guided her next to Unbolath.

"It is okay. It is only temporary. We have quite a while on the water breathing magic. Your sight may be gone but you have other senses. Your hearing and sense of touch and smell. Calm and listen. Make sure nothing is coming up to us. My perception is good but I can miss things because I rely on my sight."

She grabs Ritmush and brings him over also. "Come on right here is safe." Looking back at the creature she would bit her lip.

Now was a dilemma. Kill it now or worry about her new companions getting blinded again.

"Ritmush, I couldn't hold onto that thing to use it in such a way and it has nasty claws and probably bites. So no, I wouldn't use it to do such things."

Sealith smiled. "I love hunting challenges and dangerous creatures. But those that I can find use with meat, hide and bone. I would love to hunt with you. I did promise you a hunt today. Shall we go hunt together."

Sealith and Suzume:

Sealith reached out and caught Alexis before she fell. Holding her in her arms as the clerics healed her.

"I nearly didn't. She almost had me there, if I hadn't tripped her up and used her weakness for wanting her blade. The seal was her wanting to use that spell."

Dripping blood Sealith would stand there and spreads out her wings slightly as she debated on using her own magics but stopped and nodded. "Your healing would be greatly appreciated, just don't remove the scar from that one strong hit right here."

Once she woke.

"You are heavy in armor." She says and smiles helping her stand. "It was a good fight Alexis. You almost had me. I will keep the scar you gave me in remembrance."

Stepping back she would look at those around.

"Combat is not a friendly sparring match. It is life or death. Every choice, every reaction, every step is your life or your death. You will find the training you will have, not only teaches you how to protect yourself. But to protect your family and friends. It will not be easy, it will be rough, you will curse it, you will hate it."

Looks at everyone assembled.

"Then the day will come where you will thank us. It won't be soon. I hope for your sake, it will be a long time into the future."

Her wings spread out. "NOW STOP GAWKING AND GET BACK TO WORK!"

"You know it is rude to leave me hanging like that. Tell me this training method you are thinking."

Looking out over the recruits she looks at Suzume to see if she wanted him to do anything.

Feel free to rant. There is another way you could do it. You could have us randomly roll as we go through the sewers and make the map of the sewers that way. Just for giggles.

"Vasu, to either side of you. The more armored ones flanking you!"

She called out in Auran.

Init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

If they move in/she sees their intent as going after Vasu she would drop from the sky raking the first with her talon as she drops to the ground shoving him down with her weight.

I think Technically this would be a trip maneuver as she lands on him to shove him to the ground. But she is landing on him with her talons so I will make your call if there is any damage but will post it.

Talon Trip: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23

The Gang Missing Vasu:

Sealith looked at Suzume when he came in and very slowly brought a claw to her face and shook it as she listened to him.

"I know I told you. It was not my intent you tell everyone. Just to be able to share the knowledge of their new pairing. I guess Tengu traditions are different than ours."

Her wings shifted and settled as she thought something over. She still looked irritable but it didn't show in her voice.

She stalked around the room towards Gogrin looking at everyone gathered around.

"Greetings to you Gogrin, Telula, Alexis."

"I wouldn't know. I do not know your histories. But, what I have learned of leadership. Followers prefer a truthful and honest leader. One who will stand beside them and do the same work they will. I may not be able to use tools but these claws can still cut things. And clearing stone is easier when it is broken."

Turning to Suzume. "Sorry I took them over but I figured we should head to Gogrin's and talk to him immediately. I....well lets just say we have some very personal things to discuss and plan. Elyse, you will come too. I promise Suzume, I'll find some of your favorite drink if I can and compensate you. Elyse we need to travel fast, you have a way to make us faster?"

She trusts you more than Gogrin and since you are mated she figures you would tell him also.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

Sealith and Suzume:

Looking to Suzume. "Gogrin is her mate." She said matter of factly.

"Welcome back to 42 Mother Elyse." Sealith said this with a soft proud tone telling her she approved of her decision.

"Suzume is right, the hardship will do them good. But it can't be to hard. These people aren't anywhere prepared for such a thing and rioting and conflict will erupt. There is perhaps another way. If Telula could assist us. The people of this city can assist Elyse in her ritual and give back some of the life they have taken from it. Symbiotic relationship of sorts. Even if it is only temporary."

Turning to the Mother. "Write notes to Gogrin and tell him your decision. Also, pen one to Telula and ask her if she has any knowledge on mass rituals to share life force, or a way for the cities people to give some of themselves also to help support the tree until they can get the infrastructure ready to support themselves. The ash in the fields is a boon as it fertilizes the soil but it must be capitalized on soon."

Looking at the people milling about.

"EVERYONE FRONT AND CENTER. LINE UP, 4 LINES IN FRONT OF ME IF YOU ARE WANTING TO BE A SOLDIER. WORKERS TO THE RIGHT. CLERICS TO THE LEFT. I SAID MOVE IT!" Sealith's voice barked out loudly carrying over the rowdy crowd.

Intimidate: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16

Turning to Suzume and Elyse. "I will be asking them questions, don't hesitate to answer them when I ask them. It will be mostly hand raising. It is time we start your campaign and whip these people into soldiers and Samurai."

Looking at each person around.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

"YOU CALL THESE STRAIGHT LINES. MOVE YOUR ASSES BEFORE I RIP THEM OFF AND FEED THEM TO YOU."

Think old drill sergeant

[b]"Listen up! Elyse wishes to speak with you. This city is going to go through some rough times to come. I will not lie to you or sugarcoat it. Things will be hard. You will feel hunger, you will feel pain. But now is not the time to balk. WHO HERE WOULD SACRIFICE THEIR LIVES FOR THIS CITY EVEN IF IT ONLY MEANT ONE MORE DAY OF SAFETY?!"

Roar, Hoot:

Waving a slight goodbye to the others and a simple salute to Suzume, Sealith would follow Vasu.

Auran
"Earth creatures are varied in how they do things. Even in the same race. Cultures and areas change the more you travel. I have experienced it in my travels. It can be a bit overwhelming but also very fun."

When Vasu first looked back she saw Sealith walking to a wall and quickly climbing it. Once on top she would flap her massive wings with loud womphs of sound. Taking off into the night sky she didn't look the most graceful, but the power behind each down beat was apparent.

Once she got high enough she would shift to gliding and that is when her grace became apparent. Complete silence as she glided along and much of the ground she had lost was gained back as she flew over the city with Vasu. Vasu when she did look, would see the massive amounts of control her wings possessed, able to fold and control the speed and direction while gliding with very little effort.

Sealith circled the tree looking for a branch that could take her weight. While Vasu was nice and light, she was anything but. Finally noting one in the lower reaches she angled her way in her wings tucking close as she shot the needle and her claws dug into the bark. There was no back-winging for her to do, since that would land her wings into the tree uncomfortably. The limb bowed before rising back up after she landed. Her claws leaving marks.

Seeing Vasu above she would start to climb. Her powerful arms pulling her up without need of using her legs. Vasu, would see her wings also used as the claws that hooked on her shoulder reached up pulling her up the tree until she was near her. Settling herself on the limb she let her talons wrap around the branch as she settled herself.

"It has been a while since I flew with anyone else. Thank you Vasu."

Sealith looked at her, her silver grey eyes dark in the shadows of the tree.

CAW, HOOT, and ROAR:
Sealith would chuckle at her hushing her. In auran she speaks to Vasu.

"Vasu, shall we join them near the fire? I can massage your back as we rest and listen. I can teach you some words of common. That way you understand when they thank you."

Sealith and Owl Beak:

Sealith yawned deeply, her teeth flashing in the morning haze. "Vasu, I will have to leave you here. I have been up all night now with you and was up all day traveling 42 to attend to fixing the wall. I must get at least a nap before the rest of my day starts." She helps her get the deer to someplace to store it.

"I figured you would want some help and didn't want you to be alone. Have a good hunt again tomorrow Vasu. I'll see if you need help again tomorrow evening my friend."

Waving and picking up the cloak that had fallen off yet again. The clasp having broken she would head to her own inn to sleep. Making a mental note to get her skinning supplies if she hadn't by the time she woke up.
