I am here awaiting Jarl's action as he is next in initiative.

It happens to everyone. Glad to see you're back!

Aye, and just after I ended that gnome's adventuring career with a bullet to the knee.

He's at school. Maybe they are having exams. I know that here in the states, it is midterms ahead of spring break. Could be similar in Britain.

That's fantastic! I want a five day holiday!

Jakthion tugs his rapier free from the half-orc, whipping it out to shake the blood from it.

Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 2

Initiative: 1d10 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22

As the door slams open, he aims and shoots the vile little gnome.

Ranged 66%: 1d100 ⇒ 45

Hit Location: 1d20 ⇒ 4

Damage: 2d4 + 1 ⇒ (1, 3) + 1 = 5

How does Jakthion withdraw his rapier outside of melee combat?

Okay, I am completely new to this. I just looked up combat and maneuvers, so I think I will Impale and choose to withdraw my rapier as well. If I understand what I am doing, it should be thus:

2nd of two damage rolls: 1d8 ⇒ 4

I will choose to take the second roll of 4 damage instead of the first roll in my previous post.

I spend a second combat action to withdraw my blade. and make a Brawn check.

Brawn 31%: 1d100 ⇒ 38

Okay, that didn't work, so my blade is stuck inside the half-orc.

Rapier attack 63%: 1d100 ⇒ 35
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 1

Jakthion finally rouses himself as he sees the half-orc bear down on Catcher. He lunges forward, managing to pierce the thug's hide.

Ah, good. I'd been waiting as I was just about lowest initiative.

Awaiting Do Waya's action before Jakthion acts.

Initiative: 1d10 + 13 ⇒ (1) + 13 = 14

I guess I don't have armour. For some reason, I don't seem to have anything besides my weapons. I'll look into this and see what I did wrong.

Jakthion is caught unawares by the presence of all of the children. He falters for a moment before regaining his senses.

Jakthion cringes as Catcher kicks in the door. He sighs, "That was sarcasm because my hands were already full." The marine then joins the impetuous woman in her charge.

Jak holds up one hand gripping his pistol and then the other wrapped around the hilt of his rapier. "You want I should kick it open?" He whispers to the young woman.

Apologies all. I came back sick and this is my first night back on my feet. I just now posted to the IC thread.

"Agreed, let's rush them while we may still have the advantage of surprise."

Just a heads up. I am leaving for California this morning and will not be back until early Tuesday morning. I won't have any access until that time, so I will not be posting until late Tuesday.

Sorry for the short notice, but I completely forgot about it. Please feel free to run my character while I am gone and I will catch up when I return.

Jakthion will try to keep up with Catcher moving silently.

Stealth: 36%: 1d100 ⇒ 5

Whoops! Missed that. Catcher, Marada announced her perceptions of all the characters races/professions in character when we all first arrived at the Harrower's home. Jakthion made his statement based on hers.

"Well, if it looks safe to proceed, let's do." Jakthion draws his pistol and rapier then follows Catcher into the ramshackle building.

"The young lady asked us to await her here. Perhaps she is putting her nefarious skills to work?"

"Agreed. Let's get in there."

Curious of Catcher's words, Jak looks down into the water, "What is it?"

Perception 34: 1d100 ⇒ 57

Images of Radovan and that shark in the first scene of Prince of Wolves...

"That rickety walkway is likely trapped. If we decide on the front door, I brought along my size eleven lockpick."

"Who's alone? I did invite all of you to come along."

Jakthion glances at the woman, "We're not spending weeks or months learning to become a team before we go after Lamm. In a couple of days he'll be on to the fact that someone is sniffing after him. Then he might disappear again. He is not going to get away."

"We are not a team. Only Balian has similar training to my own. The rest of us are nothing alike. It's really very simple. This is going to be a solo operation, a pairing or a mob no matter how you work it, so if you want a chance at your pound of flesh, come on."

I was waiting to let anyone else make a statement before I responded, but I'll reply now.

Lore (Regional): 1d100 ⇒ 24

"I know that place." At that, he turns for the door.

Since I don't look at others profiles, I should assume the same and provide all with a description of Jakthion.

The man standing before you may be of only average height and build, his clothing plain and threadbare but, his bearing and carriage betray his breeding and upbringing. A floppy hat covers most of his face and the black tabard hanging off his shoulders marks him as one of the Sable Company. The marine wears a long blade on his hip, a dagger nearly concealed at his back. Your eye is drawn be the dull gleam off the blue steel of a pistol in his hand. You finally catch a glimpse under the hat and what you see causes you to hesitate. The high cheeks and porcelain skin denote strong Chelish blood. Yet, those hollowed eyes look haunted, despair plainly writ across the planes of his face. If the eyes are the windows to a soul, this one lies broken and shattered.

Nodding to Balian, the unkempt man in the Sable Company tabard holding the gun replies, "Hmpf. A townie."

At the woman's lowering of her weapon, Jakthion lifts the muzzle of his pistol up toward the ceiling, leaving it cocked. As the door begins to open behind him, he sidesteps into the room keeping all of the motley crew in his view. At the woman's introduction, he snorts in derision. Great, an imper, a moth, a horser and dancer. Nice friends you have here, Balian."

He regards the feisty woman once more. "My name is Jakthion Tauranor." He plucks at the black tabard hanging on his shoulders, "Of the Sable Company Marines."

Conjuring a harrow card to his hand, flicks it up to display The Dance on it's face.

Catcher wrote:

I apologize in advance if the Catcher seem a little strange at first.

I'm trying to create a somewhat paranoid, but naive personality. Such as doubting Jak, but trusting in Balian.

Not at all. I am playing Jakthion as an angry distrustful soldier, so don't feel alone.

Entering the room, Jak sees several other people in attendance. One such jumps up, drawing steel. At her threat, the mercenary draws his pistol. "Betcha mine's bigger." Looking at the assembled, he looks at the self proclaimed guardsman. "You. Your name."

Jakthion considers asking Marcus for details on the messenger, but reconsiders as he realizes that it makes not a whit of difference. He is going to this "meet" no matter what as any chance to bring down this bastard, Lamm, is worth the risk. He finds an empty desk with some paper, quill and inkpot and begins to scratch out a letter with many of the pertinent details from the missive he just received. Signing it, he spreads some sand to blot the ink and then seals the paper.

Stopping at the desk sergeant's desk, he hands the sealed letter to her. "Sergeant, keep this for me and don't forget about it. If the time comes, it's for you."

Winking at her, he leaves the building heading out to the location specified to see what lies in store for him. Halfway there, he notices that lengthening shadows, belatedly noticing the late hour. He was later for his shift than he had known and was going to have to hurry to make the rendezvous on time. Hustling, he made his way to 3 Lancet Street.

Arriving, he went straight to the door with only a cursory glance to see if there were any obvious threats. Seeing none, he entered without knocking figuring that any surprise would take back some of the advantage he gave up in rushing here.

I don't typically read other peoples posts unless I am included in them, so I don't know who else has arrived. I will read the spoilers for the three options above once I know the lay out of the room and its occupants and decide what Jakthion will do.

Yes, I'm still here. Just been busy here at work tonight. I'll get a post up now.

Slipping the card into his pocket, Jakthion looks around for Marcus, hoping to find out more about the message.

No worries!

Taking the envelope, he mutters, "Thanks."

He opens it and begins to look through the contents.

Looking over, Jakthion meets Marcus' eye. "Marcus. You waiting for me?"

Wrote in my first post that Jakthion is in uniform. :D

Walking down the street people just sort of moved aside. They didn't make eye contact, they didn't even seem to notice they were stepping out of his way. It wasn't the black tabard of his uniform. That symbol was recognized for it's protection of the city. The wide brimmed leather hat covered the hate in his eyes. The unkempt facial growth was untidy, but most folks didn't notice it. It was the aura of quiet menace. It was a bubble that pushed out from himself to keep others away.

Rendil's information had finally opened a door in the blind alley of his personal investigation into Aula's murder. He finally had a name; Gaedren Lamm. A corpse walking. He couldn't believe he was still heading in for his shift, but as the old man had put it, She ain't growing colder, lad. Your revenge is frosty as it gets. Let it reveal itself to you.

He was rounding the corner to the square. The Sable Company was on the far side. It was a market day and the business was brisk. People were thronged throughout the wide open plaza and he reflexively rest his hand on his rapier as he waded through press of bodies.

Apologies for the late arrival. I'm here and am heading to the gameplay thread now.

Yes, Jakthion is here!

I need to spend my skill points. It's 250 points, right? Do you have a preference for showing our work? I was planning to express my expenditures thus, [skill name] base + expenditure = total.

I took the Varisian regional trait: Local Know-it-all which give a +2 on Knowledge (local) checks for a community in which you have lived for 5+ years. How is that expressed?

When rolling, my target is under the skill percentage? For example, if my skill is at 56%, I need to roll a 55% or lower to succeed on the check. Is that right?

I think you answered this already, but I'm not seeing it. Is common magic a common skill or an advanced skill? Are advanced skills like trained only skills in that you have to have placed points into them to be able to use them?

Chris Parker wrote:

Right, Jakthion, one of the things with weapon styles in Legend is that you can just use one of the weapons with that style (for example, sword and shield allows you to just use a single handed sword). So you can pick a different third combat style if you wish.

Next up, we've got professions. I'd suggest that both Balian and Jakthion take the Soldier profession, which gives +5% to Athletics, Brawn, Evade and Resilience, and +10% to two combat styles appropriate to your culture. It also opens up Lore (Tactics). For Catcher, I'd suggest Thief, which gives +10% to Evaluate, Perception, Sleight of Hand and Stealth, and opens up Streetwise, Disguise or Mechanisms (your choice).

Also, Jakthion may add +10% to Influence (since this is used for intimidation, so it makes the most sense)

Sorry for the dearth of posting; I have been sick.

I do not understand your first paragraph. If the weapon style, pistol and rapier, just allows for me to use a pistol and a rapier, then I don't need to take either pistol or rapier as separate skills as I can use them both separately because I can use them both together.

I felt mercenary was the best fit as my profession, as Jakthion is an associate of the Sable Company Marines, a mercenary company. The skill sets of the soldier and mercenary are similar and both grant the advanced skill of Lore (Tactics), but mercenary seemed a wider dispersal more in line with a ranger type than soldier which seemed more suited to a fighter.

I added +10% to Influence on the alias profile.

Civilized

Random Age: 1d4 + 16 ⇒ (4) + 16 = 20

Starting Currency: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 6, 5) = 19 * 75 = 1,425 silver

I'm still here, too!

Okay, I was having trouble conceptualizing all of this information, so I went ahead and purchased the rulebook from DriveThruRPG. Having read through the character creation, I have a much better understanding of the process. That coupled with some of your responses above, I think I know how I would spend my creation points. (I highly recommend everyone get the rules for a $1.)

I believe I would spend my points in this way:

STR 10
CON 10
SIZ 11
INT 13
POW 10
DEX 13
CHA 13

I also think that common magic would suffice for the character. I don't see him as having much magic. Just like a ranger in Pathfinder; it's to add to the character, not define him. Size is used to determine multiple combat actions and requisites. INT and CHA are for both used for skills and POW and CHA are used for common magic. Additionally, INT and DEX are used for number of combat actions, dual wielding and ranged combat.

Now I have a question for you.

Spoiler:

In looking for the Legend book, I saw the Renaissance black powder supplement. Is this something you are allowing? It was free so I downloaded it to see how guns are implemented. As my character is a Sable Company Marine and by chance my avatar looks a bit like a musketeer, I began to think how it might be cool to have a swashbuckling sort of character. Would it be okay to wield a pistol and a rapier? Kind of a shoot in the first action then flip the pistol around and use it as a club in conjunction with the rapier in subsequent rounds.

Additionally, we can worry about an animal companion, of any kind, later on. It's not a big deal to me as I really did think that a griffon would only be for fluff anyway.

Thoughts?

So, I am going to need Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Power and Charisma? Of course, it seems like Constitution would also be important. This character is a MAD nightmare.

Chris Parker wrote:
Said a whole lot.

I trust your opinion and will place my character in your hands. Looking at your latest post, I do have a couple of questions.

Does the crossbow have minimum attribute requirements like the longbow?

You mentioned Common Magic covering most of a ranger's needs, but you also talked about creating a "cult" to cover the divine casting. Does this mean I need Charisma or Intelligence or both for my spellcasting?

There are seven attributes and I get 80 points to spend on them. Humans have a minimum 6 and a maximum 18. An even spread would result in having an 18 in four attributes and a 17 in the other three attributes. Why do I get the feeling that isn't correct?

It was for both and more. I like the skill set, the animal companion, the favored enemy/terrain and weapon styles. From what I have been told of the AP, the feat is likely to be more fluff than crunch and that's okay. I am interested to see what options are available in this system to build up a character and see how it compares.

I am interested, as well. I've never used this system. I have created a character for another recruitment for Curse of the Crimson Throne. Just look at the profile for this alias, read the background and disregard the stats. =D

A quick update. I have edited the background to include the extra credit of the first time Jakthion hears Lamm's name.
