Flowered With a B:
Kojima Hanako slinks onto the stage before an audience comprised entirely of moustached men in funny hats and khaki shorts. She looks the eldest in the eye, and smiles sweetly at the way his raised brow drops his monocle onto his lap as a snap of the bard's fingers compels a lute to fall from the sky, into her gentle arms.

A pinch at the neck. A caress. The chord is repeated. The third is different. The instrumental has the crowd enraptured. The men's eyes are all on the vulpine maiden's lips. She sings,

"I've a cute little heart... yet to break in
I'm a sweet little... loveless maiden

"Do you want to take me home?
Will you do me no harm?
I get to be all yours--ALL yours

"This," she whispers seductively, "Foxy Lady..."

And it's only through sheer will that Hanako completes the line, for at the utterance of the syllable fox, she remembers--the funny hats, the khaki shorts, the curly moustaches--these men are "Fox Hunters!"

Hanako now sees herself coming up on a scene: herself, eight years old, curled upon Mother's lap! Mother gets up from her rocker and screams, echoing Father's words. "Fox Hunters!"

The child does not understand. Who are these men? What are these things they carry? These boom-sticks? One is pointed at Mother. It booms a hole in the wall. Father's katana flashes and the boom-stick is on the floor, still gripped by severed forearms. Many men lie at Father's feet, missing heads, limbs, or both.

Mother shouts, "the burrows!" and takes the shape of a fox. Hanako takes this as her cue to flee, and does so in her diminutive fox form! Boom-sticks cause cones of dirt to burst inches from Mother's tail, but the two vixens are too swift and too small to die so easily. And the burrow is now within paws' reach...!

But a BOOM stills the air. It stills Mother's escape. Her vulpine eyes look back, and Hanako does as Mother does. She sees Father... on his knees... a red splotch on his chest spreading as he faceplants. Behind him, the monacled man with a smoking boom-stick sneers as the samurai bleeds out.

Many others still live, and they point their boom-sticks at Hanako--

But in a flash, the men are obscured by the hem of Mother's skirt. Her human form towers over the daughter fox. There is time to say "I love you," but Mother chooses her last three words with prudence:

"Don't look back."

The little fox dashes into the burrow, her little paws drumming the earth to the beat of a dozen boom-sticks.

--and yet this flashback does not stop Hanako from dancing as she strums her instrument, for she knows what comes next: Miss Mizzola who taught her all there is about music, among other things, will avenge the Kojima family!

The succubus charges one of the men, goring his throat with a horned headbutt! The arterial spray does not distract the male gaze affixed to the bard's swaying hips, and so the next man falls to a skull-crunching cloven-hoofed kick. Hanako keeps twirling and strumming as the Fox Hunters drop like bloody dominos. The eldest is the only one who lives long enough to scream as the succubus jams her clawed thumbs into his eye sockets until his monacle cracks against his frontal lobe.

Hanako drops her lute. A broken string twangs as the summoned instrument fades from existence. And the little bard girl turns away from her mistress to vomit.

"There, there. Let it all out," Miss Mizzola says. "But as promised, your parents are avenged."

Hanako turns. "Promised? I don't remember..."

"You suppressed your memories, dear. The Fox Hunters killed your parents. I killed them. Now, we live happily ever after."

Hanako tries to remember... and she does. She has another flashback, only... in this version, Miss Mizzola is the one with eight-year-old Hanako in her lap, leading her to the burrows as men try swatting the little fox with BROOM-sticks!

"Broom-sticks?" Hanako asks the succubus. "Why do I remember it differently?"

The succubus looks annoyed. "You misheard me the first time. Look, sweetie. I'm tired of wasting all my precious--all my freakin' time. The deal is I avenge your parents' death and you and I rule as succubus and succubus, wife and wife. Well, until next century. Then you join my ex-wife entourage."

Six more succubi come out from back stage. One has a mop and bucket, and begins cleaning Hanako's vomit without having been asked. Another moans, "Do we need to lure more johns here? Or should we change brothels? My guy said there's a rumor that men check into this place, but never check out." She points to the man with the gored throat when she says "my guy."

Miss Mizzola says, "We'll get a new place by next full moon. Oh, and we need a new monacle."

One ex reaches into her purse, which has several monacles in it. "Done," she says as she hands a monacle to Miss Mizzola.

Hanako, seeing this exchange, does all in her power not to barf again. "Wait... so these are not even the men who murdered my...?"

"Oh please," Miss Mizzola says, "What kind of a dick kills a kitsune child for kicks? Your mom died birthing you, and your dad... you don't wanna know. Point is, you gotta be all mine--ALL mine, Foxy Lady. And you've been of age for over a year. So do I memory-wipe you a-friggin-gain? Or can we just consummate our relationship without me having to kill a bunch of middle-aged dude-bros?"

"What is a... dude-bro?"

One ex-wife glares at Hanako, then at Miss Mizzola. "You dumped me for this clueless moron?"

Hanako says, "How dare you, you, you... witch-with-a-B!"

"Seriously?" says another ex-wife. "Are you really so pristine a maiden you can't even swear?"

Another ex warns her, "Miss Mizzola doesn't need your words. She needs action, and you better give her what she wants or you'll end up as a wretch-with-a-D."

Hanako is even more confused now. "A dretch?"

Miss Mizzola gently explains, "It's the lowest form of demon, my sweet. Too low even for you, even when you refuse me for the hundredth time. That's fine, however. Two of my lovely exes here have played hard-to-get longer than you. Longer than they can remember. But I'm afraid you've lived among foxes for too long, so I need to try a new tactic. But first, a punishment for your refusal to be deflowered."

Miss Mizzola releases pink petals from a cherry blossom into Hanako's hair. Within seconds, a flowering lattice is entwined in the maiden's hair.

"Since you refuse to be de-flowered, I have BE-flowered you instead!"

The vomit-mopping ex says, "What kind of punishment is that? Why not make her clean her fishy puke! Girl, the f#*! did you eat today?!"

"I... forgot," Hanako replies.

"Of course you did," Miss Mizzola says in a tone that is not angry. No. Not angry at atll. "My dear bride-to-be, the Beflowering marks your virginity. You will remain pure for me. And you will go to another place where you will see, others are not as kind as me. Then you will come crawling back, kissing my hooves, begging for me to kiss you back."

"But Mother," Hanako says to Miss Mizzola, her overwritten memory adding confusion to a conversation the girl can barely comprehend, "you kiss my cheek every night before I sleep..."

And the next thing Hanako knows, her eyes flutter open. And she has no idea where the heck-with-a-double-L she is!
