It's NYE here and so I won't be able to post overly much today or tomorrow. I'll do what I can, if time permits. Apologies.

I'd like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. Hope your celebrations are safe and joyful. Here's to a better, healthier and kinder year ahead. :)

After the quasit was put to death by Merixia, Elyda moved back from the building to join her companions; acknowledging the good work to finish the creature off. Upon Merixia's offer of some of the cold iron bolts, Elyda declined, "I have some myself, so I leave those bolts to those who have a need for them. Thank you, Merixia."

Listening as Klarah began speaking, it did no surprise her that Hulrun was dead, but to have his lifeless body displayed thusly did not sit right with the inquisitor. Hulrun wasn't well liked and could do unspeakable things, yet a person deserved a consecrated burial. Elyda then turned her attention to the human-faced bugs and what she knew of such creatures as they walked.

"From what you've described, Klarah, the human-faced bugs sound like demonic vermin. Warped by the Worldwound's Abyssal energies, these insects and arachnids have taken on qualities of demons such as resistance to non-cold iron weapons, fire, acid and cold. They have intelligence, due to their humanoid heads, and are as clever as an average human."

Perception to find a better place to climb up the building to the roof: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

Elyda surveyed the building, hoping to find a good place to climb up to the roof to reach the quasit. She moved 15ft to reach the building. (It's 15 ft up currently, yes? Are there any places on the wall of the house that Elyda can use as handholds or footholds? Or, is it a straight wall to the edge of the roof?)

Then she waited (holding to see what Merixia does next round) - hoping Merixia, with the aid of the levitation scale, would to get to the quasit and quickly end its life as it lay prone and wounded. (She'll be ready to climb up next round, if needed, to aid Merixia.)

Just a courtesy heads-up: From tomorrow until Sunday, I will be off the boards and not be checking in/posting in any of my games. Worldwound GM, if required, please bot Elyda accordingly during this time. From Sunday night, I'll be able to post for Elyda, again.

Thanks kindly.

(If these two can't be reasoned with, even a little, and Iomedae is all about righteousness, justice and honour, then Elyda may vote to spare their lives (they were crusaders and I can't see how Iomedae would be happy to have a follower of hers kill them because they're broken from fear. Do we know if they have killed innocent people at this stage?) and show mercy and let them go back to their friends. BUT with a definitive warning that if they continue to prey upon the innocent in the city, then she/party will hunt them down and honourably end their lives. Honestly, I've had a hard time trying to decide which side Elyda would take on killing them at this stage in game.)

Sense Motive on ex-crusaders (DC 15): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18

Elyda watched the interaction and then quietly cast a spell, once again calling upon her Lady's blessed guidance. Merixia had pronounced judgement on the pair whose fear appeared to be clouding all sense and reason. She understood Merixia's standpoint, yet she wished to try reach the captives before casting her own judgement.

Arik wrote:

"You ever fought a demon with a knife? It's suicide. You have your fancy magic, and your gold swords, and your arrogance, and think you know what it's like to try to survive without them?" He spits again.

Elyda began speaking; her words steady and uncommonly calm for the inquisitor. From her own experiences with strangers, anger and misunderstanding only begat anger and misunderstanding, and nothing got sorted.

"Fear and desperation are merciless masters and will not keep you alive in this city or any other. We did not always have sacred swords when we have fought demons - we have simply fought together, bloodied and almost at death's door, for the welfare of all. It is easy to pick off people if they are alone, separated or isolated. The heroes that have come before us - if they had given up hope, faith and their principles, then there would have been no place for those who came after - for us - in this land or any lands. We have not meant you harm, this girl Klarah was going about her day trying to survive. I have shown you my dedication to the Lady of Valour and still you resist the truth? The blood of a maid won't save you or this city. It'll leave it with less people to fight against the darkness. Anger and loathing make for critical mistakes and ones no one can afford at this time. We are not asking you to lower your guard, for trust is something to be earned and that goes both ways. We are asking that you allow yourself to see some reason, for a proper discourse, so we may not waste any more time bickering and wishing for death in plain sight of an enemy that wishes us all dead. Can we reach an understanding?"

Sense Motive on Klarah (DC 13): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24

In the same steady voice, she responded to the young woman they had rescued not moments before,

"Klarah, you have recently gone through an ordeal that has left you with less than charitable feelings toward these people. I am not making light of it. However, to leave people to die by the hands of demons is a grim fate indeed. As is killing people who cannot find some sense/reason. You have said you do not wish to kill them or save them and that is your choice. Yet, as we saved you from death, we cannot judge them to death so readily, even when time is scarce and threat is high."

Calling over to Merixia, Elyda relayed the results of her spell on the crusaders' gear, "The gear is not magical. It makes sense since they were desperate for a demon slaying blade." Laying her hand on her side, Elyda began to quietly cast; asking the Lady of Valour to guide her next endeavour/s. (Cast Guidance on herself.)

Elyda moved to stand near Thesius, the golden blade of Radiance ready to protect the company and not necessarily cut down the stirring captives. Periodically, Elyda looked up and around their current position, watching for anyone watching them or approaching the party.

Elyda watched as some of the ex-crusaders fled the area, away from them. Those, unconscious, on the ground were being restrained with Verene's twine. Casting her eyes to Elliot, she simply stated, "Well thought and done."

When the maiden introduced herself, Elyda acknowledged her with a polite incline of her head and replied, "It appears the gods wished for us to cross paths this day, Klarah. I am Elyda. Be not anxious, for you are among friends. Have you a safe place to return?"

After the girl answered, Elyda wished to be of some use, even as her arm bled, and she answered Merixia, "I will cast the spell and let you know," and then began to cast her spell to determine if the gear was mundane or magical. Cast Detect Magic on gear.

After a little time, Merixia called the injured to her and Elyda joined the cleric; relieved when the healing energy knitted some of the deeper wounds, but not all. "Thank you for the healing, Merixia. The battered blade cut to the bone," she said.

The pain was still there in her left arm - part of the skin raw and gaping. Once again, Elyda called upon her magic, this time to heal her remaining wounds. Kenabres had already proven to be dangerous and from a source she had not expected. Fear has brought on lawlessness. Lady of Valour keep us safe so we may aid the good people who remain.

CLW on herself: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Once the spell was completed, the deep cut in her left arm sealed whole and the skin returned to its rightful shade. (Elyda is back to full HP. She has two remaining first level spells this day.)

Elyda had kept her silence as her companions attempted to reason with the group of surviving or fallen crusaders. Unfortunately, her words could be misunderstood by those predisposed against inquisitors, so she remained quiet but watchful as the others spoke. Alas, the dialogue fell short of its intent and the ex-crusaders attacked. The woman with the battered sword almost sliced her arm through, even as she asked for forgiveness. What in the name of the Lady of Valour is going on, here.

Elyda's red scar itched as the pain of the deep gash resonated through her being. They dared attack an inquisitor of the Light!

Taking deep breaths to suppress the pain and anger, Elyda's light blue eyes fell on the woman who had sliced her arm and the others, even as she watched Merixia swing her blade at the male crusader who had attacked her.

Steadily lifting the iron holy symbol from her neck, so the sword and sun could be plainly seen, Elyda found and raised her voice and spoke with a steadiness belying her need to cut them down for their dishonour,

"Upon my honour and in the name of The Light of the Sword, the Lady of Valour, I ask for order and truce. We do not, and will not, cohort with demons and devils. We are sworn to protect the innocent and eradicate the plague that has befallen Kenabres. This Tiefling woman, the cleric Merixia, is an ally and we have fought valiantly side by side, in the name of justice and righteousness." She let the holy symbol gently fall to her chest. Even as the blood poured forth from the wound on her left arm, in her true hand, Elyda raised her golden sword just enough (but not threateningly at this stage), so the brilliant sheen of Radiance could be beheld, and began to recite (in part for expedience sake) one of the tenets her parents had often spoken as paladins of the Light, hoping the ex-crusaders would know the words and meaning, "I will have faith in the Inheritor and I will not tarnish her glory through base actions. If we were cultists, then I would not be able to hold this holy symbol or sword in the name of Iomedae." She was not taught to cut down other crusaders and good folk. Let them be calm, or else they will leave me no choice, she inwardly mused.

Diplomacy to calm and reason: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Then with a practiced, keen stance, Elyda quietly began to cast; a fine, shimmering golden light appearing at the end of her spell and surrounding her form - a magical barrier - before turning invisible to the naked eye. Radiance's golden blade radiated the warm light for a brief moment.

"I am a fair climber and have the advantage of the magical ring of climbing."

Elyda moved to the edge of the scar/ditch and looked down and quietly cast her spell - calling upon the Lady of Valour's guidance. Pulling the silken rope from her pack, she turned to her companions, "If we wish to preserve the scale's magic, then I can assist Master Arvashnial and Anevia down, if she wishes it. We can use the rope to facilitate the endeavour. I can do this a number of times, if there are others who find climbing difficult."

Elliot wrote:

"We * are* staying to fight, yes? Surely someone else has escaped to get help from Nerosyan before us."

Elyda turned her eyes away from the ruined city to Elliot, and quietly replied through the message spell link shared between them all, "Aye, we will stay and fight. I do not have family, here, yet there are good people - survivors - waiting for deliverance. May the Lady of Valour keep watch over them until we locate and secure each and every one."

As Verene spoke of the sections of the city that could be safe, Elyda found herself quietly nodding, "Ordinarily, I would agree that the temples in the Northgate part of the Gate District would be safe, yet now ...they are likely less safe than the Temple of Iomedae." She grew silently thoughtful; listening to Aravashnial, Anevia and Horgus.

"I have no issue with investigating each of your homes first," Elyda responded to the three denizens. Then looking to Merixia, she added through the message link, "Perhaps we can investigate the Temple of Iomedae, afterwards, if you wish to search for resources. Verene is correct - we shouldn't linger, here, any longer, for we are out in the open. Let us go...if Elliot is up to it?"

Also, if anyone has a better idea for a different title or surname for new Elliot, I'm open to suggestions! The current one is a reference to the Heron swordmasters from the Wheel of Time books and his foster family being Ulfren - Erik the Red was one of the Viking's most famous explorers. Also fits the flame theme for the Peri-Aasimar.

Elyda blinked rapidly, trying to get reaccustomed to sunlight after being underground. Unsettling silence framed the destruction of Kenabres and the smoke from fires in the distance. The short, ringing scream caught her by surprise and the fine hairs on her arms prickled with unease. Then, again, it was silent and she glanced at the others and noted Elliot seated on the ground, surrounded by Merixia and Verene. What has happened? she mused inwardly as she stepped closer to them and hearing Elliot's words, most importantly the name of his newly acquired black blade: Righteous Eclipse. Elyda looked down at the golden blade called Radiance in her hand and she marvelled at the gods' gifts.

As Elliot rose to his feet, Elyda looked the peri-blood over to ensure he was steady and sound. Heeding Verene's instruction to used lowered voice or speak through her message spell, she steadily asked the red-haired male, through the spell link, "Is all well with you, Elliot? And, aye, this is Kenabres, or what is left of it after the attack." After a few moments, Elyda turned her pale blue eyes back to the city that once was; the scarlet scar under her left eye beginning to itch. Where could the survivors be safely housed? she privately pondered.

With the words and sentiments spoken between them, Elyda bid Meron farewell and returned to the company's sleeping hut. Her thoughts were still engaged and she unsheathed Radiance and began her training drills; every elegant, familiar movement followed by a silent prayer to the Lady of Valour. She continued for an hour before she stopped to properly clean the golden sword and take some food. Elyda washed and packed her belongings for their exit from Neathholm in the morning. Then she slept.

Upon waking, performing her morning ablution, and breaking her fast, she stood side by side with her companions, taking one last look at Neathholm and bidding farewell to the Forgotten Children.

Retracing their footsteps, Elyda remained silent and watchful as they moved, ignoring the squabbling. She was relieved when they reached the exit to the sewers beyond the traitors' camp.

Elyda finds Meron sitting at the shore of the lake, watching over some sort of trap that the inquisitor doesn't recognize - presumably for use in fishing. Lifting her dragon-clawed hand, she rises to her feet. "Hail. You've returned already?"

She watched as Meron rose from the shore, and, the inquisitor lifted her hand in returned wave.

"Greetings, Meron. We have newly returned and I wished to check in and apprise you of our endeavours." Elyda then concisely recounted all they had encountered and triumphed over since the party had left Neathholm. "We have dispatched the Forgotten Children traitors and the cultists and dretches. We have traversed and ensured the maze is clear of threat or danger. They will no longer be able to hurt you and your people. I hope this will give you some sense of justice and peace." Elyda paused to see how Meron would react to the news.

Moving through the southern gates into Neathholm and accepting (with a polite nod/bow of head) the three-armed woman's cordial welcome at their return, Elyda turned to her companions and spoke quietly, "I would like to find Meron and personally tell her we dealt with the threat of her wrongdoers. She was their captive and deserves to privately hear what has become of the traitors, cultists and their dretches."

They had pushed on with consistent injury and less and less spellcasting. It was the right thing to do - find a secure place to rest and recuperate before scouting the old sewer system. She listened as Thesius explained the age of the structure and nodded in response.

Moving with Merixia and the others to the other side of the maze, Elyda spent a little time undertaking practice drills with the golden blade, Radiance; attempting to find the right balance/movement of the blade in her hand. After half an hour, Elyda ended her blade practice, with a quiet prayer to the Lady of Valour, then looked to whomever was still up and not sleeping/resting/learning spells.

"I will take first watch," Elyda advised steadily/quietly. Her wounds had been magically healed and even though the day had been a taxing one, Elyda was not injured like some of her companions and could stay up, for the next hour or two, to watch over them. Speaking/casting quietly, she laid her hand on her person, and called upon her Lady's blessed guidance. She kept Radiance in hand lest trouble came upon them.

"Good fight, all", she quietly praised her companions.

Pulling a rag from her pocket, a sombre Elyda wiped the blood and viscera from the golden blade that was Radiance; tossing the dirtied cloth away once she was done. Her arm was still bleeding from its deep gash (a "gift" from the dretch). Pulling a clean kerchief from her pack, Elyda wrapped it around the arm to stem the blood until she could imbibe a healing potion. (I believe we have four from the last search.) Once she was done, she crouched down and searched the dead body of dretch at her feet.

"Merixia, can you search the other one for anything we can use?"

Afterward, she took one of the green coloured healing potions from the earlier search and imbibed its contents to give herself some relief.

GM, does levitating up (or down) from her current square provoke an AoO from the dretch? If it does, Elyda won't as she's low on HP. But if it doesn't, then Elyda will activate levitate and float upward. Thanks.

Turning to the companions behind her, Elyda quietly said, "Several scuffs in the dust. Most are from boots, but there are some that could be made by bare feet. Let us proceed mindfully, unless Merixia you wish to look at the markings on the ground."

Elyda considered the bare feet markings, trying to determine what could have made them.

(Unless someone else wants to make a perception check and/or knowledge check?)

Once she can determine, or not, what kind of bare feet could make the markings...

Elyda, Radiance in hand before her, started moving into the maze, moving twenty feet before the maze branches and there are two paths they could take. She looked and listened to her left and before her, trying to gauge the best course.

Just as soon as the fight had began, it had ended, and Elyda was left feeling frustrated at being of little value to her companions. My Lady, even with the golden blade Radiance in my hand, I could not find quarry upon the enemy. I ask forgiveness and hope to do better in your name, she silently spoke to her goddess.

Turning her gaze on to Merixia, Thesius and Anevia, she gave an approving nod, "Well fought, all of you."

Elliot wrote:

"And I'm sorry about the fire spread, Elyda. Seems I overestimated the threat, but I take some solace in that master didn't know either."

Elyda looked to Elliot, "I understand, Elliot, and I hold no grudge. The space was tight with the faux worm-that-walks and not all things went to plan." Elyda sighed, silently chastising herself.

and then took a 5 ft step forward (for now, as the space was narrow and congested), using the curve in the rock wall as some cover against the enemy's arrows; Radiance in hand. (She's hoping to back up Merixia, if she can move closer at some point.)

Alright, Merixia, I moved Elyda back and she stays in place this round. And, Elliot, please don't damage Elyda (or Thesius) at this point with splash as we attempt to fight the enemy in close quarters. Respectfully, I don't think it's the right time to use Alchemist's Fire.

There has been many a discussion about this, but I found this online not long ago:

Does spiritual weapon occupy a space?
Spiritual Weapon does not occupy a square. A spiritual weapon doesn’t pass through walls. It also doesn’t occupy its space; it’s not a creature, and it’s not described as being large enough to fill its space.

I moved Elyda just a little to give the others access into the room (at least Merixia to try to hit it). If the others wish to remain below until we can hurt it a little or figure out how to hurt it, I can have Elyda move 5 ft to keep trying to hit it.

Elyda warily eyed the creature whose body was made of locusts. Her skin crawled at the sight. Then she heard Elliot's assessment. Lifting the golden sword Radiance, she attacked it.

Radiance Attack on Humanoid Swarm: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Before taking a 5ft step sideways, to allow Merixia to move up and possibly attack.

Perhaps Merixia and Elyda can take turns attacking and stepping 5ft back and giving each other access to the enemy? It'll look like a dance but being there's little room where it is standing - it'll keep both melee fighters in play against it. As long as the other companions leave the square with the hole (top of the stairs) and the adjacent square to the right unoccupied for them to be able to do this. Otherwise, Elyda can stay in her original square and keep trying to hit it.
