Search 14 (7+7)

You don't find any traps, although I'm assuming the search was only the near section of the hall, not all the way down.

Both archways are open portals, without doors/

Well, I guess we can run with the three of you (Xer, Shariv and Melani) then...

Did someone want to check for tracks, as was suggested by Shariv? If not, how would you like to proceed?

Sorry for the delays. Promotions that double your workload without doubling your pay suck. I should have read the fine-print beforehand, lol

You exit the raptor room through the eastern door, and following the 10' wide marble hallway. It goes east for 20', then takes a 90 degree turn and heads north for another 70' before narrowing and turning east again. After a short distance, the narrow hall widens back to its previous width as it turns north again. Apparently the architects didn't like long straight halls...

Taking a cautious look around this last corner, you see the following:

- An open archway on the west wall, approximately 30' down the hall.

- An intersection to the north, approximately 50' down the hall. This intersection has a pair of open archways (presumably leading to different rooms) at the north end, and a hall continuing to the east.

What do you do? And can I get a party order please?

Glad to have you back, Talion.

Bereka and Adaro seem to have vanished. I'm fine with continuing as is.

Rauno hasn't posted in a while either...

Well, lets keep this thread bumped to the top of the forum for a day or two, and then we'll proceed with whoever we have left.

*And in the meantime, you survivors can discuss which way you'd like to go. There is a doorway to the west of your entrance through the ventilation shaft that wasn't opened yet. And another closed door on the eastern wall of the Abyssal Raptor room.

(And my wife seems to have overwritten our maps on the website with more baby pictures... I'll get the map as (you know it) posted up on photobucket or something soon so you have a better reference)

Sorry guys, I've been busy and away from the computer over the weekend.

I'd assume this is done unfortunately, or at least on hiatus. We seem to have lost half the party.

But if you want to continue with a reduced party, we can do that. We'll just rule the non-posting PCs go explore a different part of the complex.

Xer Androssi wrote:
I don't think i was injured aiside from the blindnss thing.

Nope. Xer was blinded, and the raptors then ignored him, going for Berekiah and Rauno primarily.

There is the doorway to the east across the room.

Or you could reverse your path and go out the door you just came in, and then through the hallway, past the opening to the ventilation shaft, to the western door you originally decided to skip.

As the others investigate the bodies and discuss healing, Rauno carefully walks about the rest of the room, looking both for danger and things hidden from sight while also inspecting the arrows he'd shot. It is obvious from his gait that the archer is still feeling the sting of that raptor's claws. As his companions find items of interest, Rauno calls out, "I can stow stuff in my haversack if it looks valuable." He then resumes his inspection of the room.

Trying to recover whatever arrows he can. Figure it'll take the rest several minutes to search through the bodies, so Rauno will take 20 on a Search of the room if possible, or some rolls to cover the more interesting areas if needed (+11 Search modifier). Rauno is at 24/45 hp.

You note that on the raised platforms on the north and south ends of the room, there are what appear to be portals to other places. The first is a barren wasteland under a scorching sun, while the second is to a primordial jungle teeming with life. However, the portals appear to be visual only, as nothing can pass through them. You can however see raptors, quite similar to the ones you killed, moving about in the distance of the junglescape.

Melani Starsmite wrote:

I am guessing that Melani saw the blindness came from the obsidian wands. Or that the ivory wands healed up the goblin wounds

DM - are you allowing my cleric to just use the healing wands or do we need to sort out command words etc?

Meanwhile Melani casts resistance on Xer. Then she takes out her pearl of power and re-casts resurgence on him. He gets another save against the blindness.

"Xer this magic is strangely resistant to my spells, may your eyes see the light now and for the rest of your life. I call on Sarenrae to hear my prayer."

Yep, Melani (and others) saw that the obsidian wands cast blindness/deafness, and the ivory wands are curing wands. Cure Moderate to be exact. Melani can use both easily, as they are on her spell-list. And so that should allow you to get the party back up to full. 30 charges in each wand.

While that was one of the toughest encounters in the dungeon, at least on the first level... it also had some of the richest loot, especially in terms of healing items

Nice work to finish off both almost simueltaneously.

Berekiah pounds his opponent mercilessly with his spiked chain, driving it to the ground under a flurry of blows. When the raptor attempts to stagger to its feat, one last devasting strike to the head drops it for good.

Nearby, Rauno launches a barrage of arrows into the raptor attempting to maul him, and this time multiple arrows find holes in the wounded raptor's hide. Gushing blood from multiple puncture wounds, the last raptor tumbles to the ground.

Assuming someone decides to search the bodies. And really, what type of good adventurer/mercenary doesn't loot dead bodies? You find:

2 ivory wands, and another pair of entwined silver and obsidian wands. (1 of each from each of the goblins). Additionally, you find 2 potions (inky-black, but odorless, liquid in a glass vial) and an assortment of lances, chain shirts, and daggers. The raptor's also had barding, but I doubt that fits anyone in the party.

What do you do?

Berekiah wrote:

Overbalancing, he leaves himself open, and the Raptor takes full advantage, at it hits him savagely with a claw. Although it is far from a fatal wound, it still cuts deep.

Now I've "only" lost half my hitpoints.

Oh, and I rolled a one on my AoO if that matters (I hope not).

Well, if this were my house game, there'd be a roll on a critical fumble table... but we'll just call it a miss, since I didn't specify that we were using Critical Fumble/Hit results. Although the GameMastery Critical Hit deck is pretty cool....

Melani, Xer, Rauno and Berekiah are up next. Both raptors are looking pretty beat up at this point.

"Aww!!" Berekiah roar in pain as the Raptor drops him to 11 hitpoints.

I assume (since it was a full attack and I didn't get an AoO, it attacked from prone?

Looks back over thread....crap, in my notes with the running HP totals and status effects, I must have erased his prone status when I last updated the HP totals.

You do indeed get an AoO, and so does Shariv, from its standing from prone.

And because standing from prone is a move-action... he only gets 1 attack off. So its a claw for 13, rather than the total I quoted earlier. Unless the AoOs finish it off, which is a possibility if you roll well

My apologies on the error

Both of Shariv's tosses hit the mark, with the southern raptor now seeming even more unsteady after taking another hit.

Adaro peeks around the corner, and points his finger at the Raptor attempting to disembowel Rauno. 4 scintillating streaks of light shoot forth from his hand to blast the raptor, noticeably staggering it.

Magic Missile, 15 pts of damage

Everyone gets +3 HP from Fast Healing

Shariv is next

Sorry guys, I've been a bit busy with work, and I didn't realize how long we've been waiting for Adaro's post.

I'm just about to take my daughter out Trick or Treating, then I'll DM Adaro's action to get everything moving again. Unless of course he posts it himself in the next hour or two.

Oops. In retrospect, I'm not sure why I said it was a "glancing" blow with your shot. You did hit, and make the miss chance, etc.

Sorry for the lack of posting recently, I've been pretty busy with work. But everything should be back to normal now

Quick Summary:

Melani moved and healed Rauno.
Rauno took 3 shots, one of which hit the Southern Raptor, the other knocked a wand out the Southern Lancer's hand. (Yes, thats twice he has succesfully used ranged disarm this fight)
Berekiah and Shariv are attacking the Northern Raptor in melee. And its still prone.
Xer took a blind (literally) shot and manage to hit the Northern Raptor with a glancing blow.

---

The Southern Raptor, heavily bleeding with several arrows sticking out of its hide, lunges at Rauno in a desperate attempt to slay its assailant and stop the barrage of arrows.

And it hit, landing talons first on our beleagured archer. You take 17 points of damage. Good thing Melani healed you and is still standing there beside you ;-)

---

Adaro's turn, then everyone gets +3 HP from Fast Healing (Thanks to Melani) as it rolls back to Shariv at the top of the initiative order.

Although standing from prone does provoke an AoO, according to RAW, the AoO happens before he stands, so I can't actually trip the raptor. Of course, if you want to rule differently, I'm obviously fine with your ruling, but thought I would let you know what the rules say should happen.

Oh, good point. Its been a while since I've played a trip-happy character, and I forgot where the AoO came into the sequence.

Well, we'll stick with the raptor being prone, since I already ruled that, but we'll go with the correct SRD ruling in the future.

Melani can 5' step to the north and get the healing spell off on Rauno.

Xer's turn, then Rauno, then Berekiah

The Northern Raptor struggles to rise from its precarious prone position before Berekiah and Shariv, but Berekiah viciously beats it down with his spiked chain.

Berekiah used the AoO to trip and then hit for 13 with the free attack from Improved Trip

Shariv, your attack missed, but you do get an AoO from the prone raptor trying to rise. Don't forget to add the +4 bonus for melee vs a prone target

The Southern Lancer swears in Abyssal as he touches his wand to the neck of his saurian mount. Light flares from the tip of the wand, and some of the raptor's wounds start to close, although it is still heavily bleeding and scorched from Rauno's arrows and Adaro's magic.

Melani's turn

Xer's arrow flies wide of the mark, but luckily doesnt' hit one of his comrades. Didn't get a high enough attack role

The Southern Raptor roars in fury and darts forward to attack Rauno, who continues to pelt it with arrows. The raptor's movements are thrown off by the arrows in its hide, and it only lands a solid blow with one claw.

Rauno takes 14 pts of damage

Melani gets an AoO from the Raptor's movement if she has a weapon ready

Adaro's turn

Xer: You can find your bow with a move action (I'm assuming its relatively close in front of your, unless you dramatically threw it into the air when you were blinded) so you can get off a shot this round.

SRD wrote:

Blinded

The character cannot see. He takes a -2 penalty to Armor Class, loses his Dexterity bonus to AC (if any), moves at half speed, and takes a -4 penalty on Search checks and on most Strength- and Dexterity-based skill checks. All checks and activities that rely on vision (such as reading and Spot checks) automatically fail. All opponents are considered to have total concealment (50% miss chance) to the blinded character. Characters who remain blinded for a long time grow accustomed to these drawbacks and can overcome some of them.

If you can make a listen 10 check, you can determine the square where the raptor is, as its only 10' away from you. However, it will have total concealment against you.

Rauno fires off a trio of arrows in quick succession as he moves backwards out of range of the southern raptor's slashing claws. One arrow goes wide over the lunging dinosaur's head, while another deflects off its scaled hide. The third arrow does find a weakspot in the raptor's scaly underbelly, and buries itself to the fletching.

Berekiah twirls and lashes out with his spiked chain while in mortal combat with the northern raptor. While he is unable to land a solid blow on the agile beast, he is able to drop it prone after a strike to its right leg. You did trip it, but didn't roll high enough to hit it with the additional attacks

lol. At least she didn't use a spell on Ruano first ;-)

The southern Goblin Lancer (nearest the door) pulls another wand from his belt and touches his wound with it. A flare of light later, and its wounds are partially closed.

Melani's turn

The northern raptor turns from Berekiah to attack the latest foe to injure it, Shariv.

Shariv tumbles backwards to avoid the raking talons and vicious bite, but still is slashed twice by the raptor's claws.

Shariv takes 28 pts of damage

Adaro's turn

Thats it for the round, unless Adaro wants to take his delayed action

To recap:

Adaro is still in the hallway outside the room, albeit with a delayed action

Rauno is in the door, with the southern raptor trying to eat him.

Xer is in the square immediately to the East of the door, but the raptor ignored him as he is blinded.

Melani stands beside Xer. (Either to the north or south, I wasn't sure. Either way, the Raptor was going after the archer who put a pair of arrows into it, so it didn't matter too much in the first round)

Shariv stands to the east of Melani and Xer.

Berekiah is the furthest into the room, immediately to the east of Shariv. He has the northern raptor trying to eat him as well.

The goblin lancer on the northern raptor was hauled off (tripped) and killed by Berekiah after Shariv hit it with a throwing spike.

The goblin lancer on the southern raptor still has a surprised look on its face after Rauno took a perfectly aimed shot and knocked the wand out of its hand. It also was hit by a throwing spike from Shariv.

And now its Shariv's turn as we start the next round

The southern raptor starts to charge the party, then veers to the left to attack the archer who hurt it.

Rauno, standing in the doorway to the room, tries to avoid the ferocious assault, and partially succeeds. A single claw slash and a wicked bite take chunks (26 HP) out of Rauno, but he successfully avoids the disemboweling talon strike of the leaping raptor.

Berekiah's whirling chain snares the goblin lancer and pulls him off the raptor mount. A quick pair of strikes with the spiked head of the chain leaves the goblin battered and unmoving on the ground.

Rauno wrote:

Rauno is already firing as Melani shouts, shifting his first shot slightly. His arrow flies toward the wand-wielding goblin that fired at him, aimed in truth not at the goblin, but at his hand...

Two more arrows fly lightning-fast toward the last raptor that hadn't yet acted, the archer instinctively taking advantage of the creature's slower reaction time.

Rapid Shot, with first shot used for a Ranged Disarm attempt vs. the goblin (opposing Attack roll of 20). Last two shots go at the flat-footed raptor (Attack rolls 30 and 26, damage 17 and 15).

Attack roll, attack damage, sneak attack damage (1d20+12=20, 1d20+12=30, 1d8+5=7, 2d6=10, 1d20+12=26, 1d8+5=8, 2d6=7)

Nice shooting!

The ivory and obsidian wand flies out of the astonished goblin's hand, and a heartbeat later two more arrows bury themselves to the fletching in the chest of the raptor.

Berekiah's turn, unless Adaro wants to take his delayed action

Melani is now up. Maybe she has some restorative magic that could help?

Both goblin lancers will lower their lances, and pull wands from their belts as their saurian mounts charge into battle. (Neither has a shield, I'll post a pic up on the website right after I finish this post.)

One targets Xer, while the other targets Rauno.

Can you both make DC 13 Fortitude Saves please.

Rauno wrote:

Nah, that's okay...still going before one of the raptors so that'll give him the flat-footed state needed to lay down some sneak attack smack!

On the flipside, if Berekiah had "won" initiative, those raptors would have been eating a couple of spiked chain trip AoOs on the way in too.

This should be a tough fight, probably the toughest on this floor IMHO, but you guys just lucked into hitting it first. At least you haven't expended any resources yet ;-)

The two goblin riders clutch their wounds after Shariv's Throwing Spike barrage, but they still cling to their mounts.

The NW Raptor charges and launches itself through the air at Berekiah. The raking rear talons and bite scrabble against Berekiah's dwarven-crafted armor, but the forearm claws lash out and score wounds against weak points in Berekiah's defence.

Berekiah takes 28 pts of damage

Adaro's turn

Melani Starsmite wrote:

Rauno 3+11=14
Berekiah 12+2=14

Thanks. I'll interject the monsters:

Shariv 18+5=23
NW Raptor = 21
Adaro 15+4=19
SW Goblin Lancer = 19 (Adaro won the tiebreak)
NW Gobin Lancer = 18 (He won the tiebreak)
Melani 17+1=18
Xer 13+4=17
Rauno 3+11=14
Berekiah 12+2=14
SW Raptor = 13

Shariv's turn. The NW raptor/lancer duo is in the corner, ~15 away. The SW duo are in the other corner, ~30' away.

Ok, I've got the party order as: Berekiah, Shariv, Xer, Rauno, Melani & then Adaro. I'm assumng Adaro would be in the back with the other spellcaster.

As Berekiah walks into the room towards the door at the eastern end of the room, the others follow him. Berekiah, Shariv and Xer are in the room First 3 squares immediately to the east of the doorway, while Rauno is just in the doorway itself. Melani and Adara are still in the corridor.

Xer looks arounds as movement catches the corner of his eye in the smoky NW corner of the room, in an area that had been out of line of sight from the doorway. At the same time, Berekiah hears the scrabble of claws on marble.

"Beware!" Berekiah calls as he unlimbers his spiked chain.

From the NW corner of the room appears a charging scarlet raptor, devilish claws reaching forward to eviserate you. On the back of the raptor rides a winged goblin wielding a lance.

A similiar raptor/goblin pair also charges from the SW corner of the room towards the party.

Could the first person to post roll initiative for the whole party please?

*That should save us a day of posting back and forth to get the initiative order figured out. Melani +1, Xer +4, Shariv +5, Rauno +11, Berekiah +2, Adaro +4

Can I get a marching order for when you guys head into the room. So far it looks like Berekiah in the front, followed by ???

Melani Starsmite wrote:

Melani concentrates hard on the room and its fittings.

She tries to pinpoint the magic, even if she cannot guess the school involved.

Aside from the magic emanating from the two demonic visages (conjuration), there appears to be sources of magic (conjuration and transmutation) in the two corners of the room along the north wall.

I won't be able to post for the next few hours, as I'm going to a hockey game. I'll be back and posting around 1030 PST

At first glance
The air in this room is thick and cloying, carrying upon it the heavy and offensive smell of rotting flesh, sickly sweet flowers, exotic smoke and reptilian musk. Shadows and smoke coil in the corners of the room, and the floor is smeared with dirt and patches of pallid mold.

To either side of the room's central dais, stone carvings of demonic visages yawn, their open maws revealing two different and hostile terrains.

There is another door along the eastern wall.

If you look at the north and/or south demonic carvings more closely:

Spoiler:

The opening to the north shows a verdant jungle of fungus that serves as a battleground between enormous insects and gargantuan reptiles, while the southern maw shows the same landscape with the jungle burnt away, leaving nothing but skeletal fungoid trees and an ash-charred landscape.

I'll update the map as well

I follow Shariv down the corridor, staying alert and keeping an arrow nocked in case of danger.

I'll jam the blades long enough for them to get through, then follow behind and unjam them so our presence will be less likely detected." Heading back to the opening, he motions the others down. Once all are gathered, he looks over the mechanism driving the fans, extracts a rolled up leather tool belt, then with a few twists and pokes using strange devices Rauno set to work temporarily shutting down the drive mechanism.

Disable device check. (1d20+13=29)

Rauno examines the arrangement of gears and spinning blades carefully, then deftly inserts a tab of soft lead into the machinery.

The blades noticeably slow down then halt completely as the gears try to chew through this obstruction. Rauno figures it will take at least a few minutes before the blades start spinning again, but the lead shouldn't cause any permanent damage to the machinery.

Shariv avoids all the spinning blades and is now crouched in the shadows at the far end of the ventilation shaft. You can see that the ventilation shaft intersects a hallway in a "T" junction.

The hallways is crafted of finely cut white marble, with 8' high ceilings. There is a closed door, darkwood reinforced with steel bands, at either end of the hallway.

For Shariv, and anyone else that follows him down

As you near the opening in the cliff face, you can fell the onrushing air being sucked inside. The opening is more than large enough for a man to fit through, and once inside, it widens considerably into a worked tunnel.

Ten feet in, the tunnel divides into three shafts, each filled with multiple man-sized turbine blades that spin lazily, driven by rumbling gears. You think you could time it and dodge past the blades (Tumble), or perhaps temporarily jam the gears to slip past (Disable Device). Of course, smashing the blades and/or gears is an option as well, albeit not a stealthy one.

Peering past the twirling blades, you can see a hallway of smooth white stone, brightly lit by continual flames every twenty feet. The ventilation shaft is very dimly lit by moonlight from outside, and the light from the hall.

I've posted a map up for what is visible to the first person that enters the ventilation shaft.

After a few hours of searching and bribing (or intimidating) locals, you manage to find a window in the outer wall of the Core that is roughly above where Tirana’s complex is supposed to be located.

The window was barred, but it is only the work of a few minutes to chip away the mortar holding the iron bars in place.

Leaning out of the edge, you can see what you think is the ventilation shaft opening ~30' below. Warmer air from inside steams slightly in the cool night air, helping to mark the location where the shaft opens. A faint toehold of a ledge is also visible.

Below the opening in the cliff-face for the shaft, the cliff descends vertically for roughly a quarter mile before it begins to slope outwards towards the plans. A waterfall can be heard off to your right, as one of the streams flowing from Kaer Maga's spring-fed lake gushes over the side of the cliff.

It would be easy enough to secure a rope here in the room.

Who climbs down the ventilation shaft first? Or are you going to use a different method to climb down to the opening?
