"No, no, I was asking if you want the banded armour. Once the burly half-orc wakes up, he can tell us if anything is magic."

Turning to Haer Kul, "Did I mention you are looking positively angelic this morning?"

Prahd looks at the boy and nods. "I could tell you were clever right away."

"...ooow!" Prahd grimaces in pain.

"Okay, that's fair, I deserved that, but we really need to get you to Rexel now."

"Unhhh..."

"Grab whatever supplies youve got. And someone bring that crossbow."

Prahd patches himself up, and retrieves his own crossbow and waits for the others to gather the children.

Can you use ghost sound to pretend that an ice cream truck is going by?

Prahd looks at Petronicus and blinks a few times.

"You mean you didn't study the part of magic that is about magic?"

Sorry to butt in on your game. I've been away from the Paizo boards for a few years and just recently started in a new play by post. I noticed this game today and read through your game so far. It was fun to read! I hope you all enjoyed it. I wrote Prince of Augustana and a few other early PFS scenarios, and I always enjoy hearing people's war stories of the adventures I wrote, but this is the first time I've read someone else's entire play by post experience.

I particularly enjoy people's reactions to the spider swarm/gas trap, so thanks for that!

Carry on!

Prahd fires a bolt at the last farmer.
Crossbow: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 101d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
The bolt thuds into the shed wall proving that he can, in fact, hit the broad side of a barn.

Prahd shakes his head as he reloads one more time.

BTW, there is kind of a running joke that I always play a dwarf fighter. I probably won't actually. Although I might.

OK, that's just...just...a truly admirable idea. My hat's off to you, sir.

No, no, keep it on. It makes you look younger.

I would be perfectly happy with a structure whereby the factions were open and friendly and thus the PCs could act in character to support each other's goals. I'm not sure how it would work, but I'm sure it could be done.

Right now, that's not what we've got, and I don't think it's necessary to change from what we've got (although I have no objections to such a change).

Again, I'll speak anecdotally. So far I've seen the metagame faction thing work two ways.

1) A PC picks up the McGuffin and says "I'll hang onto this. It might be useful later." The other players look at that player and nod knowingly, and overlook the fact that they know he just completed a faction mission. They could argue, but choose not to.

2) A player says "Guys, I really like this clever plan you've come up with. Help me come up with a way to make it work for my character, so I can achieve my faction goal, which your plan would otherwise prevent." The other players proceeded to help.

I don't think I've run into the example I gave previously where two PCs argue ethics and then they resolve it by one player conceding to the other's faction goal. But I would completely do that if it were me.

So all of these look a little meta-gamy. Unfortunately I don't see a way to avoid this kind of metagame while having both faction goals and a 'No PvP' rule. And frankly, I personally would rather keep both those rather than eliminate the metagame.

Anyways scenario one happened several times, and never caused a big problem. Scenario two has happened in one of the nine PFS sessions I've been involved with. The secret of the factions only needs to be broken if that kind of conflict arises.

Also, if players can't separate player knowledge from character knowledge, they are going to have trouble with this whole structure to begin with, because they already know that every other player is in a faction. which I guess is Chris' point. Still, I don't see it as being a huge problem based on my experience so far.

It may require the DM to occasionally say "You don't know that" which can happen in any game, and is really much less onerous than the extremely rare instance where a DM might need to say "You aren't allowed to attack the other players."

I think it might be helpful if the guidelines for running scenarios included advice to the DM for when PC conflicts arise over/because of faction goals. I still thank that the general guideline should be "The PC who is trying to achieve their faction goal should not be prevented from doing so by another PC.

I'm not runing the STAP yet and I'm a little hazy on the details of this part, but I think it would be fun to have the PCs find their previous characters' bodies somewhere that they shouldn't be... maybe animated as zombies. Drop a few of their other bits of equipment into the area, and leave it as weird mystery.

I'm with Fake Healer.

I mean come on, letting people choose stuff about their characters? Ridiculous! I never got to choose; I was born a male human. Players should have to randomly determine their character's race and gender. And really, your class is mostly determine by opportunities you had as a kid, or natural leanings. You shouldn't choose those either. I'd say that as you go up levels you could maybe get a modifier to improve your chance of continuing in the same class, but it should still be mostly random.

And what's up with set encounters? Get rid of all that crap. Why does the DM get to decide who and what the PCs meet. All encounters should be random too.

And generally, I recommend randomly rolling to decide what your character does in any situation. I mean, we can't really know their motivations. It's not like we can decide what other people do in real life. PCs proabably have their own reasons for doing what they do. We shouldn't interfere.

Geez, people, this game isn't about being happy with your character or playing what you want, it's about rolling dice, and saying "D'oh" or "Woohoo" as appropriate. Why do you want it to be more than that?
