Ok, So Mark Sheppard is one of my favorite genre character actors. He has appeared in Supernatural, Dr. Who, Warehouse 13, Firefly, BSG, ST: Voyager, Sliders, etc.

Who could he play in future episodes/seasons of Game of Thrones?

My vote is for Halden Halfmeaster. A bit of a snarky quircky character, as well as I'd love to see him pit wits against Tyrion...

Any other suggestions?

1st level and 5th level... What nets you the best bang for your buck(Feat)

For first I'm looking at Mage Armor. at 7th level it pretty much saves you from buying a +4 bracers of armor.

or

Vanish 5 rounds of invisibility 2/day is nice.

Not really hit 5th level choices yet, but interested in feedback.

In the bestiary under FAMILIAR it states; "Presented here are the base animal statistics for all of the
most commonly used familiars".

So obviously other normal animals may become familiars. Thematically for a character I am working on, A wolf Familiar would be appropriate.

By adding the young template, A wolf seems to be on par with some other familiars;

young wolf:

Young Wolf
CR 1/4
XP 100
N Small animal
Init +4; Senses low-light vision, scent; Perception +8

DEFENSE
AC 14, touch 14, flat-footed 10 (+4 Dex, +0 natural)
hp 4 (1d8)
Fort +3, Ref +7, Will +1

OFFENSE
Speed 50 ft.
Melee bite +0 (1d4-1 plus trip)

STATISTICS
Str 9, Dex 19, Con 11, Int 2, Wis 12, Cha 6
Base Atk +1; CMB +0; CMD 14 (18 vs. trip)
Feats Skill Focus (Perception)
Skills Perception +8, Stealth +8, Survival +1 (+5 scent tracking); Racial Modifiers +4 Survival when tracking by scent

Especially now that UM has added some small critters as Familiar options;

Donkey Rat:

Donkey Rat CR 1/4
XP 100
N Small animal
Init +3; Senses low-light vision, scent; Perception +4
Defense
AC 14, touch 14, flat-footed 11 (+3 Dex, +1 size)
hp 5 (1d8+1)
Fort +3, Ref +5, Will +1
Offense
Speed 30 ft., swim 20 ft.
Melee bite +0 (1d3–2)
Statistics
Str 6, Dex 17, Con 13, Int 2, Wis 13, Cha 4
Base Atk +0; CMB +1; CMD 9 (13 vs. trip)
Feats Skill Focus (Perception)
Skills Perception +4, Stealth +15, Swim +11

and
Goat:

Goa t CR 1/3
XP 135
N Small animal
Init +1; Senses low-light vision; Perception +0
Defense
AC 13, touch 12, flat-footed 12 (+1 Dex, +1 natural, +1 size)
hp 5 (1d8+1)
Fort +3, Ref +3, Will +0
Offense
Speed 30 ft.
Melee gore +2 (1d4+1)
Statistics
Str 12, Dex 13, Con 12, Int 2, Wis 11, Cha 5
Base Atk +0; CMB +0; CMD 11 (15 vs. trip)
Feats Nimble Moves
Skills Acrobatics +1 (+5 when jumping), Climb +5, Survival +0
(+4 to find food); Racial Modifiers +4 Acrobatics when
jumping, +4 Survival to find food

Then upon reaching 3rd level, Improved Familiar could theoretically advance the Familiar to a true Wolf. As it seems on par with many improved familiars of that level.

Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Okay, Here is a silly, somewhat useful new spell with a bit of flavor. Let me know what you think.

Summon Fidzit

School conjuration (summoning); Level antipaladin 1, bard 1, cleric/oracle 1, sorcerer/wizard 1, summoner 1, witch 1

CASTING
Casting Time 1 round
Components V, S, F/DF (a tiny bag and a small candle)

EFFECT
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Effect one summoned creature
Duration 1 minute/level (D)
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no

DESCRIPTION
This spell Summons one (1) Fidzit. You can command this creature to take dictation, or to copy writing from one source on to another. A Fidzit can only copy non-magical text or illustrations, not magical writings (such as spellbooks and scrolls). A Fidzit can copy or write 250 words per minute, one (1) detailed illustration every 5 minutes, or one (1) minor illustration every minute. The Fidzit does not translate the writings for you. If you can not comprehend the original source material, you gain no benefit towards understanding the copy.

Fidzit CR 1/8

XP 50
LE Diminutive outsider (devil, evil, extraplanar, lawful)
Init +2; Senses darkvision 60 ft., detect good, see in darkness;
AC 16, touch 16, flat-footed 14 (+2 Dex, +4 size)
hp 1 (1d4-1)
Fort +0, Ref +4, Will +0
Offense
Speed 5 ft., fly 30 ft. (good)
Melee bite +6 (1d3–6)
Space 1 ft.; Reach 0 ft.
Spell-Like Abilities (CL 1st)
Constant—detect good
Statistics
Str 1, Dex 15, Con 6, Int 2,
Wis 10, Cha 4
Base Atk +0; CMB –2; CMD 3
Feats Weapon Finesse
Skills Fly +16, Perception +4;
Racial Modifier +4 Perception
Ecology
Environment any (Hell)
Organization solitary, pair, or flock (3–10)
Treasure none
Fidzits are the clerks of Hell. They are the least of all the devils. A Fidzit can copy or create any document at 250 words per minute. There is a lot of red tape in Hell!

Yeah I know, how often do we get to 18th level. But to get three extra castings of any 9th level spell is a bit powerful perhaps. The eidolon casts more 9th level spells than a wizard of 18th level. All for a mere six evolution points (4 pts for two ability increases and 2 pts for Spell-like ability 3/day).

Comments?

Brian

The subject pretty much sums it up.

As an example;

Levels one through three your Eidolon is a small quadrupedal form (small black cat)

Levels four through six your Eidolon grows to a medium quadrupedal form (medium black panther)

Levels seven through twelve your Eidolon evolves into a medium bipedal form (medium cat man)

Levels thirteen through fifteen your Eidolon evolves into a medium serpentine form (medium flying feline Serpent)

Levels sixteen through eighteen your Eidolon evolves into a large serpentine form (large flying feline serpent)

Levels nineteen through twenty your Eidolon evolves into a huge serpentine form (huge flying feline serpent)

So your Eidolon progresses from your little pet cat to a huge feline dragon beasty. Great for RP.

I was just thinking. Oracles are a perfect venue for escaping the trappings of Domains. May take just a bit more work to build the Bonus Spell Lists, but;

Oracle of Music
Oracle of Illusions
Oracle of Shadow
Oracle of Time

or following a different vein...

Oracle of Lust
Oracle of Gluttony
Oracle of Greed
Oracle of Sloth
Oracle of Wrath
Oracle of Envy
Oracle of Pride

Just an Idea that popped in my head. I'm sure if I took a minute, I could follow the structure of the current Foci and create these for myself and my campaign. But thought I'd throw it out there.

Comments as always are welcome.

Quote:

SHORT

You are unusually small for your race.
Detriment: Humans, elves, and half-elves are
treated as Halflings for purposes of tactical
speed and reach. Short half-orcs are treated as
dwarves. Short dwarves have a tactical speed
of 15 ft. and a natural reach of 0. Short gnomes
and halflings have a tactical speed of 15 ft. (or 10
ft. when wearing medium or heavy armor) and a
natural reach of 0.

Is a halfling with short considered a tiny creature? If a halfling is under 2' and has a reach of 0, wouldn't it be a tiny creature? What about a human, elf, half elf? Are they considered a small creatures if short?

Or does this only affect speed and reach #'s?

Does a specialist wizard who takes divination as a prohibited school still have read magic in his spellbook. As well as being able to cast it from memory?

Brian

Quote:

Spellbooks: A wizard must study his spellbook each day to prepare his spells. He cannot prepare any spell not recorded in his spellbook, except for read magic, which all wizards can prepare from memory.

A wizard begins play with a spellbook containing all 0-level wizard spells (except those from his prohibited schools, if any; see Arcane Schools)

Sometimes I'm slow, I mean really slow. But I just noticed this change to Familiars and I was just curious as to the reasoning behind it.

"At the master’s option, he may have any spell (but not any spell-like ability) he casts on himself also affect his familiar. The familiar must be within 5 feet at the time of casting to receive the benefit.

If the spell or effect has a duration other than instantaneous, it stops affecting the familiar if it moves farther than 5 feet away and will not affect the familiar again even if it returns to the master before the duration expires."

This entire aspect of a Familiar's Share Spells ability has been changed out. Was buffing a familiar by extension deemed too powerful?/ plain unnecessary?/ everyone is getting a bonded item or sword anyway?

Heh, Thanks in Advance,

The RPGs: Book-based or Computer game-based thread got me thinking.

A quick search of the web brought up this page of literary sources for DnD from 1st edition DMG.

http://www.geocities.com/rgfdfaq/sources.html

What more recent Books/movies/series etc. have influenced DnD today, or perhaps were heavily influenced by DnD themselves.

Here are some I've enjoyed;

Greg Keyes - THE KINGDOMS OF THORN AND BONE series

Lian Hearn - THE TALES OF THE OTORI series (Oriental Adventures)

George RR Martin - A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE series

Steven Erickson - MALAZAN BOOK OF THE FALLEN series (just started reading the first book, but am enjoying it so far)

I know I've used elements from these books when building my campaigns/characters.

What are some other influences?

Brian

(also looking for my next read after I finish MALAZAN :) )

These are feats from complete Scoundrel;

OK

I've updated the feat a little.

STEALTHY HUNTER
You combine your knowledge of anatomy learned as a rogue and your strong hunting abilities.
Prereq: Sneak Attack +2d6, Favored Enemy

Benefit:
Your rogue levels and 1/2 your ranger levels stack for the purpose of determining the extra damage granted for sneak attack. For example, a 4th-level rogue/3nd level ranger would deal an extra 3d6 damage when using sneak attach, as if she were a 5th level rogue.
Your ranger levels and 1/2 your rogue levels stack for the purpose of determining when you select additional favored enemies, as well as the total bonus granted against your favored enemies. For example, a 4th-level rogue/3rd level ranger would have two favored enemies and could allocate an extra +2 bonus against one of those favored enemies as if she were a 5th level ranger.

SWIFT HUNTER also adds;

In addition, your skirmish extra damage applies against
any creature you have selected as a favored enemy, even if
it is normally immune to extra damage from critical hits
or skirmish attacks.

I felt leaving this out and halving the levels stacking brings this closer to being workable and not broken.

Let me know what you think.
