I don't understand how your homebrew games don't give you the feeling of progression because Society isn't really any different from "regular" play!
I feel like there are too many people who have this idea that if they aren't playing AL, PFS, or whatever then they're not playing right! I have no idea where this idea comes from or why this idea seems to exist! Play how you want with the things you want. As long as everyone is having a good time you're doing it right!
Oh yeah, I understand that this entire thread is all essentially just hinges on playing officially, which is a pretty big hindrance.
I do agree, yes it is hindering and we do also have our own homebrew characters that we all love and enjoy.
I have convinced my brother to go with your suggestions, and currently we are going through the Beginner Box. I have a feeling we'll be enjoying this campaign regardless.
