The return to the Last Homely House is bittersweet for Amalina. Its welcoming warmth, dry clothes, and wonderful meals were reason for much joy within her heart. But the needed departure of Gylwinth to warn her people left a hole despite her understanding of she left. Usually Amalina was the one doing the leaving. Always forced to flee town or village to stay ahead of the shadow and its hunters, even as she did her best to hunt them. This time the tables were turned and she didn't like feeling that somehow she'd failed, by not defeating Mormog and his plans completely.

Yet, the shadow was always lurking, so if not this threat, then another would have drawn Gylwinth to aide her people. Such is the way of things. And brooding would do her no good at all, so she opened her heart and mind to the warmth, song, hot meals, new clothes, and a good long hot bath. All the comforts that Elrond's house had to offer and the did much to revive her spirits and heal wounds both physical and mental.

As usual she tried to avoid undo attention upon herself choosing instead to highlight the exploits of others when recounting the tale to the council. Being sure they knew of Findegil's standing firm against the goblin hoard and going toe-to-toe with the trolls and ettins, Estel by his side. The work of Cereidh's mighty bow and her stealthy exploration of the caves beneath the ruined keep. Wulgith's welcome blade and inspiring determination to save her own companion, the proud and daring Swiftkiss who was able to carry both Wulgith and a badly wounded Cereidh clear of the troll army. And of course, Gylwinth and her expert healing hands and fine stories that kept us all going during the long hard journey and the aftermath of such challenging battles.

"I am proud to have them as my companions and to have done what little I could to help achieve the success we did." It is at this point in her tale that she remembers one promise still left unfulfilled.

"My Lords of the council." She says a frown growing on her face. "We did discover beneath this ruined keep of Arnor, a chamber where a spirit had been imprisoned long ago. After we defeated Mormog's allies, this spirit revealed itself to us as one called Feredrun. This spirit claimed to have been a prisoner of the Shadow for many long ages and wishes to be freed, but cannot do so." Her eyes to turn those with more wisdom and learning than hers. "Had we the means, we would have released this spirit to return to the void, but we did not. Instead we promised to bring the creatures tale to you here, that you may have a means for either freeing or delivering this spirit from the bonds and influence of the dark one."

I don't know if we've landed on an answer to the continue/not continue question, but I thought I would throw out the offer to GM things over the summer if Therenger needs a break and wants to be a PC instead. (The return of Hobwise?)

I know the original idea for this particular game was to have the GM duties rotate. It'll take me a few days to come up with something to get things rolling. Also, I'd likely rotate Amalina out unless we really need her as a GM-NPC.

Anyway, offering up the idea since I think I've got just enough bandwidth to take this on at least for a couple of months.

With Midwinter fast approaching Amalina is sure to secure the best fat from her most recent hunts. During the evening while on watch she renders down the fat over the low coals of the fire, removing the impurities. As the fat slowly cooks, the woodwoman braids seven long wicks from thread taken from one of her more worn and travel stained tunics. One for each of her companions, herself, Winter and Swiftkiss.

Carefully she ties a small coin to the bottom of each wick giving it weight and then dips them multiple times into the tallow. It takes a bit of time but eventually she creates seven rough looking but functional candles.

"Among the wood folk it is always a part of the celebration of the longest day to light candles to last through the dark of the night. A blessing for friends and family and a reminder that even in the deepest night, the light will soon return." She says to her companions. Noting the puzzled looks at the two extra candles, Amalina simply smiles. "I always light one for Winter and knowing how much the the riders of the south value their horse companions, I thought Wulfgith might wish one for Swiftkiss."

For a few moments, her eyes stare off over the wild dark landscape of these forsaken lands. Finally she breathes deeply and smiles again. "The tradition seemed even more important and worthy, given that I hope it helps symbolize the small bit of light we've brought to this land through our recent efforts."

I'm good to continue, but totally understand if others are drained. I agree the C7 materials often leave a lot to be desired when it come to adventure design, so there's extra burden on the GM.

Definitely enjoyed the surprise add of Aragorn into the mix, especially since Amalina got to be totally besotted with him for a while. I'd just echo the other comments that you did a great job with the final encounter. Certainly suspenseful and I wasn't sure if we'd make it out of there. :)

Despite the bleak country and cold weather, Amalina's spirits seem unexpectedly high. After all they may not have killed Mormog, but they certainly bloodied his armies nose. And once they reached Rivendell, the Council could figure out what to do about the remnants of his attempts to restore the dark land of Angmar.

With many of the trolls gathered under Mormog's banner and not lurking in their usual haunts, game was actually easier to come by. The Losrandir making their winter migrations back into the Trollshaws, provide good hunting and indeed she and Winter are able to bring down two of the creatures while on their journey. The hunt providing not only meat, but excellent hides to be cured, antlers for carving, and marrow for a healthy, warming soup on those cold nights.

Using her knowledge of woodcrafting, she uses one of the antlers to craft a flute and soon enough her melodies accompany some of Gylwinth's tales or just echo out across the highlands during the dark hours of the night. Much to everyone's laughter, Winter often joins in with his own drawn out howls and yips whenever she plays, and most agree, he's often better able to hold a note than Amalina.

Collapsing on the ground in a heap, Amalina simply lays there staring up and the fading stars and dim purple-gray of early morning. For several moments she does nothing but breathe deeply as Winter pants furiously next to her. A small giggle bursts forth from her lips. Quiet, soft at first, but soon enough it becomes a full-throated laugh. The thrill and feeling of simply being alive running through her body like a wild mare on the open plains.

Wiping tears from her eyes, she ruffles Winter and throws her arms around the big dog, who returns the affection by running his tongue across her face and barking several times.

After the release of energy runs its course and she helps the others by finding fuel for a fire and setting up a camp to help everyone recover enough to begin the journey home.

Fear and the roar of hundreds of bellowing trolls are a powerful motivator. Seeing the barrels and the destructive potential that might hinder their pursuers, Amalina races for the fuse. Only to catch a glimpse of Gylwinth slipping on the snow covered ground.

Hoping there would still be time, she hurries back and with strength powered by the anger roars of the horde, lifts Gylwinth up over her shoulder and runs as fast as the extra weight will allow toward the mouth of the valley.

Just as she was starting to feel relief as Wulfgith manages to free and start leading Swiftkiss back to the river, Amalina sees one of the troll's eyes grow wide as it spots the moving horse.

With a quick curse she and Winter turn with the others, the hound easily outpacing them as he dashes ahead, alert for any danger that may be blocking their escape.

She manages to avoid the thin snagging top of a fallen tree sticking out into the pathway, easily leaping over the obstacle. Hearing a surprised shout and thump, she turns back to see Cereidh tangled in the dead branches. With her heart racing the woodswoman races back a few paces and helps pull the elf free and back on her feet again.

As they race for the vast pile of liquor, she looks back to make sure everyone is ahead of her. Wulfgith and Skiftkiss, Gylwinth, Findegil, Cereidh already at her side. She again helps the elf move ahead.

"Don't worry! I've got it." She shouts. "Just stick with the others...and if something goes wrong, make sure Winter gets back to Rivendell." She adds between gulping breathes and reaching for her flint, steel, and oil soaked cloth.

Before everyone is ready to leave, Amalina tears several strips of cloth from her spare shirt. Tying them all together into a long strip she then hurries over to mountain of barrels and casks. Climbing to one a little closer to the center she uses Hopes Fury to bust open the quickly bust open the top of the alcohol filled container. Her eyes blinking from the nearly over powering fumes, she thoroughly soaks the rag and then leaving one end in the barrel runs the rest of the makeshift rope out to the edge of the containers. There she tucks it slightly out of sight, but where she can easily reach and put a spark to it should they need a distraction on their way back out of the valley.

Once that's finished she nods her readiness to see what darkness lies further in the Captain's camp.

Seeing Gylwinth's eyes flutter open, Amalina sighs with relief then has to stifle a laugh as Winter gives the Dunedain several wet, sloppy dog licks before she can manage to get a blocking arm in front of her face.

"Welcome back to the land of the living my friend." Amalina says still smiling. "Unfortunately, we've not much time to linger. We've been lucky so far, but I fear soon enough we'll be running into thirsty trolls. And it seems we may have found Wulfgith's missing companion." She adds nodding deeper into the valley.

She gives the battered Dunedain a worried look. "Will your herbs and abilities be enough to give you strength until we can see what is happening and then escape this place?"

Basically Amalina is for moving on and not risking a second rest unless absolutely necessary.

Breathing a heavy sigh of relief as the remaining ettin falls, Amalina shoulders her bow and calls Winter back to her side. Her body battered, bruised, and bleeding she starts to turn back to help Gylwinth when Estel's words finally register in her muddled brain.

"Wait...what?!" She starts to say, but it is already too late. Estel had run off after the fleeing ettin. Perhaps it was the pain of a dislocated rib, the worry for her unconscious companion, or maybe it was simply that the man had run off with a simple 'continue on' message, but her girlish infatuation with Estel came to an abrupt and complete end.

"Before we do anything we need to try and revive Gylwinth. Cereidh do you know anything of her healing herbs? I'm trying to remember some of Radagast's lessons, but to be honest I was much more interested in working with Winter, than in growing plants at the time."

With grim resolve, Amalina fires two more arrows into the thick skinned monster holding Findegil, hoping this time it will finally fall. Seeing how much punishment the two-headed beast can take, Amalina nods at Wulfgith's words.

"Aye, we've little time and little strength left if that brute manages to bring back others. Let's hope this other one falls soon."

Amalina breathes a heavy sigh of relief as Gylwinth breathes on her own once again and appears to be okay at least for the moment. Closing her eyes she offers quick thanks to the Light and then grabs her bow.

Her own wounds still nearly mortal, she judges the distance to make sure neither she or Gylwinth are within easy reach of the big two-headed trolls. Seeing the creatures several feet away, she give a quick whistle to direct Winter to aide Estel while she draws and fires a shaft at the creature Findegil fights.

Even with help from Wulfgith, Amalina struggles to keep Gylwinth alive. For a moment she feels the healers heart stop beating, the flow of her vital fluids no longer moving through neck or wrist. In a near panic, the woodswoman begins pressing hard on Gylwinth's chest, something she'd seen one of Radagast's students do after a woman had nearly drowned in the Anduin. She did her best to remember the way the southerner had counted, pressed, counted and pressed. She even had Wulfgith share her own life giving breath with Gylwinth. Yet it didn't seem to be working. Tears of frustration roll down her cheeks as the Dunedain remains unresponsive.

But Amalina fights on. Not letting herself of Wulfgith stop. Just like she did in the caves beneath the keep, unwilling to give up and let the shadow win. Finally in the end, she is rewarded as Gylwinth lurches once, twice. Then settles again but now with a feint heartbeat and the feeling of the woman breathing on her own once again.

Feeling herself fade in and out of consciousness, Amalina struggles again to escape the ettin's grip, but Winter's harassment of the creature finally pays dividends when the hound catches the ancient troll in a sensitive spot behind the knee. Reflexively it loosens it grip and the woodwoman is able to slip free.

For a moment she considers driving her axe into the ettin, but then she notices Gylwinth's still, unmoving form not far away in the snow. Fearing for the brave healer, she staggers over and offers what little aide she can to stabilize the wounded Dunedain.

They needed to get further into the valley and from what Amalina could see there was only one way to do that. Unfortunately, that way meant fighting the three trolls blocking the way. She looks over to the others as she quietly draws Hope's Fury. "An excellent idea." Amalina says, nodding at Gylwinth. "It seems Wulfigth or myself might benefit the most following you and Findegil." She says as Cereidh moves with graceful silence back toward the valley entrance.

I've got a +5 to Stealth. Looks like Wulfgith is a +3. So I'm thinking Wulfigth. But who knows how the dice will roll. :)

Breathing a heavy sigh of relief as the troll guard heads back into the valley, Amalina creeps down to rejoin the others.

Confirming that the barrels contain enough alcohol for an army, she watches thoughtfully as the cart is loaded and driven off into the valley.

"Hmmmmm....perhaps we've an opportunity coming up." She says thoughtfully. "If we give a little time for that firewater to do its work, it might be possible for us to slip into the valley for a look at who is gathered. Trolls aren't known for their restraint, so my guess is once they get started drinking, they won't stop until the sun drives them under cover."

"If we are quick and quiet, we might learn enough to take back to the Council." She says. "Are we willing to give it a try?"

Amalina and Winter drift a little further back up the hill. After a short distance she and Winter start to yip and bark.

"Yip. Yip. Yipyipyip. Yieeeeee. Yip." Performing the best coyote imitation they can to try and keep the troll from searching too closely for the others.

Amalina nods, hearing her companions concerns. There really were too many things that could go wrong in a quick and deadly way. Finally she nods at Gylwinth's suggestion.

"Maybe stealth is best under the circumstances." She concedes. "But let us all move to within bow range of the stockpile. That way at least we'll have a little cover should a hidden guard challenge us or try to sound the alarm."

She looks down at the mountainous horde of barrels and crates.

"Perhaps once we are closer to the vale, we'll find a less used and obvious path deeper into the valley. As for who should go, I think Cereidh with her elven grace moves quietest of us all."

Amalina whistles softly as she raises her head from the cold ground, brushing a bit of crusty snow from her hair.

"It's not just a handful of trolls down in that valley." She says softly, glancing around at her companions. "I can't be entirely sure of the numbers, but there aren't just five or six of the big monsters down there. There are dozens. Dozens. Trolls and possibly others large creatures, maybe a giant or two. It's hard to be sure this far away."

She glances back down at the valley. "It's going to be tough sneaking in. We certainly aren't looking at defeating them all alone."] A pause as she rubs her chin thoughtfully.

"If this is anything like that bunch at the keep, there'll be Men folk down there as well. We could cover up, disguise ourselves well enough to get in, get a look, and then get back out. If we stay to the sidelines and shadows, bluff our way through, we might at least get a look at numbers. Overhear a plan or two. Maybe find the stables to see if Wulfgith's horse is here. If so, find a way to get him out without drawing the wrath of the whole lot down upon us."

"We could grab a couple of them smaller barrels. Say we were ordered to bring 'em to the leaders tent or some such." She shakes her head. "Don't know how we get in otherwise, unless we willing to take the risk of skulking through the night in a strange land and creatures who can smell us coming in the wind turns against us."

Despite the cold and snow, Amalina can't help but feel a bit of awe at the mighty mountain range. The freshly snowcapped peaks towering and dominating the brilliant Western sky. Their various glaciers and snowfields lit up with soft yellows, pinks, and oranges as the sun starts to drift lower and lower toward the horizon.

Used to being on her feet and hiking long distances, even her legs start to grow weary keeping up with the long strides and fast pace set by Estel. But she too felt the urgency. The need to make some kind of shelter before the weather turns sour once again. So the woodwoman marshals her inner reserves and pushes on. All the while she marvels as Winter continues to trot happily ahead, the hounds seemingly endless reserve of energy easily keeping up with Estel's league eating pace.

When they come upon the valley, with its pyramid of barrels and stores, as chill dread runs down her spine.

"That's more food than a simple nest will require." She says, watching as the trolls stomp away deeper into the forested vale. "Five trolls, guarding stores. We just encountered four on the trail. Three others back at the keep, a minor outpost, but also digging tunnels. Obviously more beasts lurk deeper in that wood."

A worried frown crosses her features as she watches carefully for any sign of new arrivals. As well as scanning the trail to estimate the numbers that have passed recently. "What if this captain really is having success raising an army? An army of trolls from across the Trollfells, Coldfells, and Ettenmoors. What was it that ghost Feredrun said? 'His plans were nearly complete?' Or something along those lines. "

"We do need to see what's inside those barrels. Then we should try to scout further into the valley if we can. It may be this is too much for us few and we're better off making sure the Council learns about this so an army can be raised in time."

Survival to use Rumour of the Earth ability to try and determine rough number of troll in the valley: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18

Rumour of the Earth:
Also starting at 3rd level, when you stretch yourself upon the ground with your ear pressed against the turf you can decipher the sounds of the earth. You can hear it groan when the enemy treads upon it, or echo the distant gallop of horses, or sing in tune with the rushing of tumbling waters.

Between each long rest, you may make a DC 15 Wisdom (Survival) ability check. On a success, the Loremaster must give you a useful piece of information about a quarry you are hunting or a place you are seeking. If you get 25 or higher as a result, the information gleaned may very well seem near-miraculous to others.

Rubbing Hope's Fury with snow, Amalina cleans the blade and slips it back into the loop on her belt. For just a moment she is stunned by the sudden and nearly complete destruction of the trolls with only Estel suffering a wound from the beasts. So very different from what happened in the keep. A difference that simply reinforces her belief that the placed is truly cursed.

Her eyes drift back over to Estel holding his arm as Gylwinth tended his wound. They had fought side by side, if only for a moment. He was truly a master of that great blade he carries. But many warriors carry fancy swords and practice in the yard to become skilled. Yet few can withstand being charged by a pack of lumbering bellowing trolls with the same kind of courage, calm and quiet strength as Estel had. Truly a warrior.

Amalina's heart flutters slightly as Gylwinth finishes tying off a bandage, giving Estel's arm a kindly pat as she makes sure the binding is tight, but not too much so. The jealousy that slips through her mind causes her to turn away, ashamed and embarrassed. She needed to get her feelings under control. She'd seen others turned by the shadow through such feelings and she did not want to fall prey to the Dark One is such a way. Truly she needed to talk with the Lady Arwen when they returned to Rivendell.

To turn her mind from such thoughts, she and Winter work on collecting her arrows and searching the trolls for anything that may be of use in the hunt for the captain.

Amalina draws Hope's Fury and lets forth a wild battle cry of her own as she rushes forward to engage the trolls before they can try and surround Estel. With Winter at her side, woodwoman and hound become a blur of steel and snarling teeth flashing in the light of the full moon. Her axe slashes into the troll she'd already wounded with her arrows, sinking deep into foul flesh once and then again. At the same moment, Winter grabs a chunk of troll leg, ripping and tearing with a snarling hatred for all things of shadow.

Seeing her first two arrows hit the mark, Amalina lets out a quick grunt of satisfaction as she sets, draws and fires two more feathered shafts.
As they wing toward their intended targets, Winter growls softly at her side.

"Don't worry." Amalina says to the big hound. "We'll be in the thick of it with those beasts soon enough."

Gylwinth: Sorry I assumed everyone had Great Bows which have a range of 150' without disadvantage. However, given the 70' difference between your bow and all the others and the substantial volley we have with 8 attacks each round, it seems to make sense to fire at the longer range because that gives us 1 extra volley before they can dash into melee.

Seeing the others ready bows, Amalina quietly strung her own. Her thoughts quickly drifted back to the ruined keep and the last time they faced such a multitude of trolls. Those three had nearly done them all in. Now they faced four. Her eyes glance over at Estel, calmly waiting in the cold, silvery light of the full moon. He heart skips a couple of beats. He really is a very handsome man. But shaking her head back to the task at hand. Pretty or not, she hoped he could wield that big blade with the same skill he displayed leading them through the highlands.

With the trolls lumbering toward them, she keeps Winter as her side. Quietly she draws four iron tipped arrows, jabbing three into the snow and putting one to her bow. She breathes in, letting the cold air fill her lungs and purge all thoughts from her mind except for the lurching form of her target. Her eyes reflect the silvery moonlight as she watches the lead troll move closer until she estimates he is just within range. At that distance she should have enough time for at least two volleys before the trolls could cross the field to her position. As the beast crosses that imaginary line, her body flows into action. Drawing, aiming, and releasing in one quick expert motion. With little thought, she grabs the second arrow and with the same smooth action sends it winging after its sister toward the enemy.

Hearing the concerns of both Gylwinth and Cereidh, Amalina nods thoughtfully. "It seems we are divided about whether to proceed or camp, however, I will cede to Gylwinth's experience in the lands as well as yours Estel." She says turning to their experienced guide barely suppressing yet another blush.

"Winter and I will scout a short distance to see if there's a suitable place to camp nearby before night fully sets in."

Although still cold and shivering Amalina couldn't help but blush and feel warm when Estel ended up next to her as they all huddled together during the harsh night of Winter's first blast. By the Valar! What was wrong with her? She couldn't help thinking between fitful bouts of sleep. She felt like a giddy girl still in braids and skirts. Definitely not the warrior who held off a horde of goblins only a few short weeks ago. Who was this son of Elrond that so befuddled her mind and heart? Perhaps I will seek the council of the Lady Arwen once we return to Rivendell." The memory of Arwen's kindness and gentleness steadies her tumultuous mind and the thought of seeking her council provides enough strength for Amalina to put her troubles at ease at least for now.

Tired and exhausted from the days punishing journey through the snow-filled highlands. Amalina can't help but be amazed at Estel's stamina, not to mention his obvious skills as a woodsman. Not wanting to show any weakness or lack of courage on her part in front of such a man, she resolves to continue should the others wish to do so.

"A short break to catch my breath would be welcome." She says, sipping from her waterskin. "But I am willing to press on if all are. The sooner we find our quarry, the sooner we can end the danger and hopefully all return to the warmth of Estel's home in Rivendell."

"It would be an honor and pleasure to have your company and guidance through these lands." She adds feeling her cheeks redden even further as Estel's gaze lands on her again if even for a few moments.

Puzzled by his mistresses odd behavior and smell, Winter comes up and softly nuzzles and bumps her hand gently with his nose, but the move seems to have little effect as Amalina doesn't take her eyes off of the big newcomer.
