Out-of-Print Titles Return as Print-on-Demand

Friday, November 26, 2021

We’ve been publishing Pathfinder books since 2007 (the first of which didn’t even use the Pathfinder branding). Over the nearly 15 years since GameMastery Module D-0: Hollow’s Last Hope came out, many titles have gone out of print. While they’re available as PDFs on paizo.com in perpetuity, for a lot of fans, those books that came and went before they started playing are something like holy grails for their collections.

I’m happy to announce that as of last week, Paizo has partnered with DriveThruRPG, hosts of the Pathfinder Infinite and Starfinder Infinite community content programs, to offer print-on-demand versions of select out-of-print titles. We’ve got 10 titles up currently, including The Emerald Spire Superdungeon and Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting (both in your choice of soft- or hardcover versions); missing volumes of the Council of Thieves, Reign of Winter, and Return of the Runelords Adventure Paths; Pathfinder Campaign Setting favorites Paths of Prestige, Technology Guide, and The Worldwound; and both We Be Goblins! and We Be Goblins Too!

DriveThru RPG graphic featuring multiple pathfinder titles

These print-on-demand versions differ from the originals only in that the inside covers have been printed as additional pages in the books’ interiors (and that some are now available as softcovers for the first time), and they will easily fill out gaps in any collector’s bookshelf.

We have more titles in the works and will keep adding more as long as folks keep buying the ones we’ve got. Make sure to let us know in the comments what out-of-print titles you most want to see available as print-on-demand offerings, and we’ll set our priorities accordingly.

The value of the original print runs as collectibles should not have diminished, as they are described in the blog in a way that suggests that the new POD versions are readily distinguishable from the originals.

If you just wanted the contents of the documents in printed form, you should not have had to pay anything more than the price of the PDF plus the price of having it printed at Staples.

In my experience getting pdfs like this in full color printed at staples is much more expensive than this POD option.

Of course it is -- but it might have been less expensive than a secondhand copy of the original print run on Ebay.

I don't think that was the comparison, I think the comparison was to spending $300 on an out of print original edition. One that the value of exist because of rarity. If your goal is simply to have a functional copy of the book to reference, printing it at staples (not in color) is likely far cheaper than the collector prices that have been mentioned.

If the only reason you bought it was to be able to have a physical copy to look at... not for having an original printing of it. You could potentially sell your current original printing to a collector who only wants an original printing, and you can replace it with a POD version, as long as the original sells for more than the cost of replacing it with a POD version.

While my experience with POD is such that they are decent. I think anyone paying attention would be able to distinguish a POD copy from the original mass market print, so the originals should maintain a higher end value.

Yes, now that those who just want a convenient physical copy have an alternate source, it is possible that the demand for original printing copies will have gone down, and thus the price may go down. But on the other hand, if you don't need an original printing, you might be able to recoup some of the money if you sell the originals to get a POD copy.

Interesting enough, in the long run, the availability of POD copies might bring more people into the Hobby, which might bring more people and a new generation potentially with money and interest in collecting, which might eventually be willing to pay more money to build up a 'Collection' of first printings in good condition.

Looking at prices for secondhand original printings of old books for other games currently available as POD on DriveThru indicates that there's still a market for them. I don't know what the going rate was on them before their POD versions were offered, though.

Super-Important Question:

Previous iterations of the APs have some incredibly problematic issues in light of Paizo's stance on bigotry/sexism among other things

Will those APs be altered to reflect a changing publisher, or will they be POD warts and all?

WotC hasn't modified their POD, I see no reason Paizo should. Censorship of past editions is not the answer, editing them is opening a whole can of worms since everybody has their own ideas of what must be edited and we will end with print copies as functional as Robocop in the 2nd movie (1990) that no one will want to buy.

It would be nice if Paizo published a calendar of what titles will be available and when. WotC sometimes publishes more than one in a month, then no new POD for months, it is quite frustrating for those waiting for certain out of print/overpriced 2nd hand books.

Would there be plans to put notes on them that these are dated .pdf and no longer reflect the values of Paizo?

Otherwise there's a legitimate concern that folks will continue to point to the P.O.D. as either 'not paying attention/tone-deaf' or 'this is what Paizo is really about, don't use the 'woke' edition'.

As the son of an investigative reporter, Nope, please don't do this!

I think at most adding a note to the inside front cover that says something along the lines of:
"This publication includes content that does not represent our current values and we're continually working to improve our inclusiveness and representations. However we have left the work as original printed without editing that content."

That is no different than pointing at the current 2nd hand copies you can get on amazon or ebay. The only difference P.O.D. makes is increasing the already sizeable amount of copies in existence. If those folks you mention are that concerned, then they will not stop until older copies are branded with a "defective" stamp or are outright burned in a pyre.

In layman terms, pursuing such endeavor is beating a dead horse.

I like this idea as long as the new print is clearly identifiable so as to not affect the value of the original first print. It sounds like you have accounted for that, so its a good idea. Saves Paizo from expensive large-scale reprints, while allowing the few of us grognards that still prefer the smell and feel of print over digital to get our fix. Win-win. Nice job!

Depends on the date on the POD actually.

IIRC the price of the original edition of the RotRl books dropped after the release of the Anniversary edition.

This will be a problem sadly on eBay. I almost bought a resold DTRPG POD D&D 4e Manual of the Planes instead of buying it directly.

We will not be changing the editorial content of the books, but reserve the right not to offer a title at all for POD for whatever reason. We have neither the inclination nor the bandwidth to go back into books (some of which are over a decade old) to make editorial changes.

Our approach to addressing past missteps in flavor or sensitivity are to not make the same mistakes in future projects and directly address them in new products (see Lost Omens Mwangi Expanse vis-a-vis Heart of the Jungle.)

We are currently working on a disclaimer to address this, which will be added to all POD product pages (similar to what other publishers have done for their older material).

Thank you for this statement. It is heartening. I hope the list of items not offered approaches, if not equals, zero. I did just make my first purchase of some of the items in this offering. I'll get more next month. I was surprised to learn I already had a couple of these 'hard to find' items.

I hope the Pocket Editions will remain regular press for a while yet?

We continue to keep most Pathfinder 1 rulebooks in stock as hardcover or pocket edition for the foreseeable future, yes.

PoD for older products is one of the best things a company can do. I'm fine with PDFs for anything away from the gaming table, but it's tough to replace a good book for quick reference.

I'd love to get the next batch (probably another 5 titles or so) up before the end of the year, but we're waiting on a few proofs that may not arrive in time, given the current state of shipping and whatnot. If not before the end of the year, then certainly early in January.

Thank you, Mark! (And the rest of the awesome Paizo team)!

While I have physical copies of most of the currently available titles, I'm very pleased to see them reoffered in a sustainable way, and look forward to the selection of titles hopefully growing over time.

The four I ordered arrived today. Three (Thieves #1; Return of the Runelords #6; Paths of Prestige) are fine and exactly what I expected.

Paizo PODs book from dtRPG: good quality. Slightly lesser binding than the mass printed ones, but only nominally, just a couple bucks. Only nominal color calibration differences. Biggest difference is the paper of the leaves being "paper" rather than "glossy coat". I prefer reading on the matte, they just may have less durability. But it doesn't feel like that big of an issue.

The Worldwound has some errors though. The spine is printed with "STRATEGY GUID", and the TOC has some missing characters ("Chapter Two: dventures in the Worldwound" [capital A is missing, but space for it is there]); likely from the layout file. It's not a big problem by any means.

I'm happy to continue getting POD for the rest of my books to fill out what I'm missing (mostly Campaign Setting books, and adventure paths I desire) when I don't see a reasonably-priced, readily-available copy of the mass printing on ebay/etc.

I received my Council of Thieves #1 as well and am happy you guys are doing this! Most of the other comments pretty much covered the APs that I'd like to see go to POD, but I'll throw my 2 cents too:
- Carrion Crown
- Skull and Shackles
- Reign of Winter
- Iron Gods
- Wrath of the Righteous

I've been playing PF1e since it came out and been slowly collecting all of the setting-neutral rule books. The only one I'm missing now is Book of the Damned, which is absurdly expensive now that it's out-of-print. I was lucky to grab a Like-New copy of the Advanced Class guide on eBay, but that was only after hunting for months. If Paizo would make all the rule books PoD, that would be great.

Thanks for your input. I suspect we won't put the rulebooks on PoD as long as we are selling most of all them in hardcover or pocket edition directly on paizo.com. We are not trying to make sure collectors can have all the hardcovers or all the pocket editions. We are making sure sure the rulebooks are available in some form. If a book is missing there is likely a reason. Book of the Damned was before my time, but I think it won't be revisited. Sorry.
