The lack of character portraits is disappointing. With the amount of race/class combos available, there should be a LOT more choices for character pictures.

While there's not a lot of portraits, you CAN import your own portraits. Won't really help if you're already up and running, but I did just manage to build Shensen in my game using the art from the cover of Pathfinder #100 as custom portraits.

Details on how to do so are over on Steam... click here to go there!

Yeah. Happily custom ones are pretty easy (once you realize what the tiny little head is for). What makes the base portraits worse is quite a few of them are prominent NPCs. :/

I like the game very much, but that's a real gripe.
And the general lack of full spellcasters that aren't clerics.

Are any of the iconics besides Amiri in this or can can you build your character to be obe of the Iconics? (Lini specificly)

Amiri is the only iconic who can become a companion. I don't know if you'll run into the iconics anywhere in the adventure as NPCs though.

But I'd just run with it. I had a funny moment playing Knights of the Old Republic, where I had named my character Trask following an injoke and what was the name of the absolute first character you run into on opening the very first door?

Scarab Sages

I got TPK'ed by a random encounter (TL). It seems strangely difficult to reach the enemy casters in the back without drawing a ton of AoOs.

Now I've reached the bear, and it's just mopping the floor with my peeps. Utterly ridiculous encounter design. I'm going to switch to Story Mode for this one.

Sounds interesting, but what are Steam and GOG?

Can not tell if sarcastic, but if not... :)

Steam is the games distribution platform owned by Valve that is arguably the largest PC games retailer on the market at the moment.

GOG stands for Good Old Games and is a similar only retailer/distributor for PC games in competition with Steam, but they are more well known for releasing DRM-Free (Digital Rights Management) versions of games.

No, it was not sarcasm. I don't play a lot of video games, so was unaware of these things.

Then I'm certainly glad to help. :)

The reason GOG exists and why DRM-free is appealing is because to play games on Steam you have to download Valves independent Steam Client, which is a separate program on your PC. This allows Valve to exert a certain amount of control over the games on their platform. This includes beneficial things like the Steam overlay that allows some interesting features and functions within games that would not exist otherwise (things like Achievements and messaging between Steam users). But some people don't like Valve having this much control, and in some cases this prevents users from modifying their experience as they see fit. GOG has a similar client I think, but all of their games can be downloaded and installed independently of any other program, allowing users more freedom to install, store, and modify their games as they see fit.

I have a question for anyone who has played through the Kingmaker AP.

This question contains spoilers for the Kingmaker AP, CRPG and the Carrion Crown.

My question:
I ran into an NPC at Oleg's trading post who mentions that she adventured with Adivion Ardissant. Is he actually referenced in the Kingmaker AP or was this just an addition for the Kingmaker CRPG?

Sardel wrote:

** spoiler omitted **

Anoriel Eight Eyes was added for the CRPG as the way to get custom adventuring companions. She doesn't exist in the adventure path.

Huh. Just realized I'm trapped in a dungeon, can't rest (cooking isn't possible because its disabled for... reasons, despite having plenty of ingredients for various recipes), and the skeletons in the place have absurd bonuses (+14 to hit, because either +5 dex or str and +7 BAB +WF and masterwork), and the archers have rapid shot, and are down long hallways.

And the entrance door is sealed until I explore each chamber in turn.

I'm level 5, and AC for frontliners is 26, and it matters not a lot. Rapid shot also seems to act oddly- they roll once (or the UI hides an attack roll) and do damage twice on a hit, for 1d8+7 each.

This is pretty brutal, and I suspect there is a even more ridiculous boss waiting at the end. I'm down to a handful of healing potions and few spells.

I managed to get the game working this morning. Had to change a bunch of settings on my PC, but if I rush through character creation the game doesn't try to launch my computer into space once I'm in the in-game engine.

Now that I know that, I'll have to pre-plan the actual character I want to play over the weekend.

I'm going to use the iconic portrait for Erasmus - So what would you say fits classwise for that?

Oh. 2 (TWO!) iron golems. And I thought the skeletons were unreasonable with a 7th level BAB assuming a full BAB template from 'Champion.'

Yeah, that isn't remotely fair. +28 to hit beats everyone's AC even before the die roll.

Hey, is anyone else noticing that the feature that lets you get your own character scales with your level? Like, 500, 2000, and so on?

It doesn't seem possible to create your own characters without them winding up hideously underequipped for whatever level they're at, and that just compounds the problems of them being weaker as far as statlines go+the enemies being hard as nails.

Well, yeah. If they didn't scale, they'd be useless.

Gear isn't really a problem, after a bit things start getting flung at you, and what you don't get you can buy (and what's available also changes over time). I'm largely keeping good (named) pieces for the NPCs that haven't shown up yet, or if I need to swap for specific threats (a couple bane weapons and special materials so far).

As for weaker statlines, it depends who you're comparing them to. Four of the companions are also 20 point buy. The rest are higher, but tend to be really odd in stat allocation. I haven't even tried Regongar yet, as I don't think he has any measure of survivability (low dex and con) until level 7 (which I just hit) and can wear medium armor.

For the higher statline companions, most of them have big drawbacks (Jaethal) or stats that don't actually help them (Valerie). Even Octavia straddles that- absurdly low Con and 5 points into Charisma. You could make the same statline as an elf with 10 Cha and 20 point buy.

When do you start actually being able to afford them, then?

I'm nearly level 3 and still couldn't grab a level 2 custom if I wanted to.

I just stayed up until 02:30 trying to finish that endless repetitive dungeon at the Sycamore, hoping the end was just around the corner. I still haven’t reached it. It feels as long as the entire game before it.

Spoiler:
Story-wise, I should have sided with the Mites, since the Kobolds are obviously sold on Tartuk’s propaganda... but knowing that they’re the bad guys in book-KM, I instead opted not to choose sides. Now I have to fight everyone. Probably a bad idea. Tempted to switch to Story Mode and AI fighting again.

Pre-ordered this game and it is AWESOME. It is everything that I would have wanted out of a PF PC game. Sorry if others are having difficulty running it. Runs well on Win10 for me thus far.

The little easter eggs and call outs are a nice touch.

The Carrion Crown reference early on even acknowledges a popular thread/suggestion for that AP that appeared on these forums!

Oh, one more thing: Has anyone figured out how to use potions in the midst of combat? I put them in my belt, but I can't see them in the action menu.

Above your character's hotbar at the bottom of the screen, there are little triangular pop-ups - A for actions, B for belt, and I think there's S for spells. Pop up the belt and you'll find whatever potions/scrolls/____ you've readied there.

Oof, yeah... and a grid.

So Linzi keeps charging face-first into the fray, and when I try to get her out of there, she gets an AoO... There seems to be no 5’-step or Retreat, which makes this really deadly. I’m glad I didn’t go with my original idea of Rogue/Paladin; the flanking would have been super tricky to set up.

Has anyone figured out a good routine yet that allows combat to start with squishies staying back and firing ranged attacks?

A simple start is to hand out light crossbows to the squishies, and confiscate [cleric of Sarenrae]'s scimitar - changes how their AI behaves.

If you've gotten Jhod back to Oleg's, he'll sell you a scroll of Communal Delay Poison for 375g. Takes that fight from miserable to manageable.

At any point. I don't generally bother picking up mundane armor, but masterwork weapons (including composite bows) in particular sell for 100 gold a pop, and they aren't that rare.

I was close to 2000 just wrapping up the prologue and Oleg's (I did grab the armor there, since it was right at his feet to sell). Admittedly, I looted everything from the Aldori manor (except the gold, actually. Paladin).

I opted to save it briefly and get the small bag of holding instead, but money hasn't really been an issue so far. By the time I finished chapter one, I had picked gotten around 36-38K. (Before buying things. I spent most of that on a +1 flaming crossbow and a larger bag of holding) And that was without selling the big ticket items like the Stag Lord's bow. Though I did sell his helmet, because I absolutely hate how it looks.

Scarab Sages

money's not a problem for me early, but man could oleg sell a wand of CLW?

I actually did find one somewhere, but I don't remember exactly where.

Haven't used it much, but I built a LOT of healing into my party. It seemed fairly mandatory. Mostly because I started on Challenging, with enemies brought down to what is laughably labelled as 'normal.' [But actually gives enemies +4 to hit and AC over their PRD Bestiary entries, among other bonuses].

'Somewhat easier enemies' is actually more by the book (well, for example, basic trolls have weapon focus: claw, but AC and base attack bonus is otherwise correct).

Scarab Sages

Is anyone using Tristian's blessing of the faithful to boost a frontliner instead of having him plink away with a crossbow? Is it worth it?

I tried it a bit, didn't find it particularly noticeable or useful.

His build, statline and archetype aren't really what I want out of a cleric. Feats and gear can get Harrim in roughly the same place, and he can do other things as well.

Somebody's already produced a 'mod' that adds eighty additional portraits, mostly from DeviantArt contributors. I haven't seen them yet, but people on the Steam forum were saying the average quality is pretty good.

Their original plan was to make customs cost 500 x (party level)^2, but apparently that's being changed to a fixed amount. I've seen two people say 500 and 2000, but neither was a developer, so watch and wait.

Just bought it and did the first part to Olegs as a rogue on normal. wasn't too bad although some surprises.

Just a heads up. I didn't have any sound when I first played. I'm using windows 10. Had to do some surfing and found out it was likely direct X related. I downloaded it again and then reboot my PC and sound then was fine.

Yeah, was this on the NW edge of the starting territory along the edge of river (west of the hut, NW of the temple)? I had two different random encounters there- 2 Primal Spider Matriarchs, and 2 Elder Fire Elementals. Both were absolutely unwinnable.

To be honest, that bothers me less than some of the set piece encounters, which wildly vary between cakewalks and WTF? Especially if there are alchemists or evil clerics involved. Wizards largely just want to summon things that vanish when the wizard dies. Clerics and alchemists are set up to not just drop but kill party members.

Gotta love the mite clerics that tear their own mob up as they kill you with channel negative every single round.

Am I supposed to keep all that food I find? Is it used for making «Hearty Meals»? (In random combinations?)

Is it worthwhile to buy camping supplies to avoid having to hunt? Sometimes that takes, like, 16 hours.

Switched governing to auto mode now. Let's see if that helps.

BTW, are there no Strength-rated bows in this game...?

Scarab Sages

Hearty meals have a DC that is harder to fail than succeed once you've trained it up to +10 skill mod. I think it has no food requirements, as there aren't any listed for it when hovering in the manage menu. The other meals give better bonuses when you succeed, though.

You'll need camping supplies to rest indoors / within dungeons, i.e. under the Old Sycamore (easy enough to backtrack to an exit). If you're carrying more than 6, you're probably wasting weight, although your party will pull from rations if you fail your hunt check and can't feed the party.

I'm tempted to switch governing to auto when I'm out for more than a week, simply to maximize event coverage. I would totally love it if, for instance, while I'm in Nalmarches (don't own) I could still access my Kingdom screen.

Composite Long+shortbows cover all str ratings I believe.

Scarab Sages

Once you switch to auto-governance, you can’t switch back. I haven’t regretted it so far. It looks like a very complicated system full of hidden dangers. I didn’t appreciate how it kindly informed me something horrible was going to happen in a month, and in the meantime there was nothing to do but wait and «be ready». Then it actually escalates two weeks earlier than that. If that’s what it’s like, I’ll pass.

Meanwhile, I lost about an hour of gameplay because I forgot to save (fights went swimmingly) until somebody insta-killed Octavia. I think I might buy a custom PC to replace her, with the same layout except for good Con, just to keep that from happening all the time. I figure it’s gonna get worse once the enemy mages throw Fireballs.

Not sure this is correct. I usually have Linzi do the hearty meal option when camping. One time I got rid of all the food at Oleg and had to camp later, before picking up some random food. The option for the hearty meal was not available, even though Linzi was in the slot (under Manage). When I picked up some food as treasure, the hearty meal became available again.

The Curse is a weird exception in the timing thing. (Part 2 screwed me up worse, because it popped 3 weeks before the failure date, rather than 1 (and everyone was tied up, so all I could do was take kingdom damage over and over for a week).

That said... I think the Kingdom management is fairly awful in its own right. Each event only has 2 (or even 1) advisor that can even solve it, so having a choice is almost meaningless.

The two week projects to improve the kingdom can wreck you with events (and always pop more), even if you don't pass a month marker.

And frankly, the d20+bonus roll is statistically likely to drag you down to a failure state, even if the bonuses get really high, law of averages will give you low rolls sometimes, so failures will accrue.

There isn't really any way to avoid it besides saves scumming each and every event.

Interestingly, with one exception so far (I'm near the end of chapter 3), mages don't do that. Instead almost all wizards summon spam, with a side order of haste/slow.

Alchemists, on the other hand will bomb you and keep bombing. And they'll do it after someone drops and people start dying.
And there are a _lot_ of alchemists.

Clerics are the next most problematic, as they love spamming channel negative energy.

Both cast a spell or two (alchemists tend to self buff, clerics tend to toss hold person), but after that, they just repeatedly spam their area damage abilities.

You find recipes, will be a single page named 'Haggis' or w/e in your inventory, right click to copy it, you can then select it in tha camp management page, hunting never takes longer than healing would anyway (or does not seem to) but supplies are needed for ahort falls and when you cannot hunt (dungeons mainly), all 'Composite' bows use str to damage, but aren't limited to a set amount.

So Hargulka gave my main character the Death's Door condition. I returned to the capital, where I'm supposed to meet a «healer» to get rid of it, but I can't find any conversation options or shop items to that end in either of the PC Clerics or the Aasimar. How does this work?

I am a backer at the $40 pledge level which gets me:

You will get the premium digital version of the Pathfinder: Kingmaker including exclusive backer-only content: 3 special in-game items — a magical cloak, a helm and a ring available early in the game - and your party will start with a unique and quirky spell.

I have download keys for the base game and another one for DLC. How do I get the special in game items?

I am assuming the DLC (Down Loadable Content?) contains the three items?
