What?!? There aren't any Steak 'n' Shakes out West?
Sadly, no. They don't even extend into the mountain states really. At least as of Colorado, there are no Steak n' Shakes and we are tremendously sad for it.
But I totally agree. I love the NW rain over the midwest hot any day. And glad you enjoyed the spectacle known as Gen Con.

Aww, ok. I take the hint. Sean doesn’t want visitors (or just me).
Well, I am no weather expert (obviously from my post), I just had heard Seattle receives a ton of rainfall. Was not sure how much that differed in Redmond.

Every single time I've been to Seattle it has not rained a drop.
I think its just a myth they use to keep people out of their state. I'm onto you Washingtonians!

Actually, they don't receive a ton of rainfall, but it rains a lot more often in Seattle.
All this is taken from wikipedia.
For example, Birmingham, AL, where I'm from, receives 54 inches of rain per year in 117 days.
Seattle, on the other hand, receives 38 inches of rain and 12 inches of snow per year in 155 days.

Sean likes that his city has a bad weather reputation.
It rains about 200 days out of the year here. But 90% of that time, "it rained today" means "there was a drizzle for about an hour." I don't own an umbrella. Most locals don't.

Thats how you can tell us looney tourists from California apart from the locals.
See. I know your secrets. ;)

What I find amusing is when it's 80ish degrees in Indianapolis for GenCon, you always have people from up north complaining about how horribly hot it is. I always giggle because this year and about every year, being from NC, it was 100+ degrees with 100% humidity back home, and I found the weather at GenCon incredibly pleasant.
Mind you, I was born in NJ, and oh God I miss snow.

The one time I went to Seattle, it was an absolutely beautiful long weekend with lots of sun and pleasant breeze, it made kayaking in the waters pleasant. The locals I was with were amazed at the weather and said I was lucky. For me, the bad Seattle weather is also a myth in my deluded, limited experience. ;-)

Believe it or not, there's a lot more of the state of Washington than just Seattle and its surrounding environs. There's a big difference in weather between the west and east sides of the state, thanks to the Cascades.
Here in Spokane, for example, we only have two seasons: Winter, and Road Work.

If you read my more recent post, I just was not sure how much it differed in Redmond and Seattle in regards to rain.
And that two seasons of ‘Winter and Road Work’ is something you can use just about anywhere that has snow. It applies the same to us in the Chicago area.

Birmingham! And you are running Kingmaker! I am also in Birmingham and running Kingmaker. Do I know you IRL somewhere?

Heh ... you're not fooling anyone! After coming home from PaizoCon this year, I told my wife I wanted to move to Seattle.
Of course, first I need to land that awesome job with Paizo ... hey, a guy can dream, can't he? :)

There must be something outside Seattle -- how else would you get your White Castle fix?
BTW, I hope you gave Russ Akred an extra GM star for bringing in that Crave Case to GenCon! ;-)

Having grown up in Indianapolis and now living in Seattle, I miss the local flavors. At the Steak N' Shake 3 times over 6 days while I was there for GenCon and visiting the folks. Pizza King another night, White Castle very late Saturday. Chili 5 way every time at the S n' S. :-) Dad sends out cans of chili as care packages for us.
Still waiting for the report on the yearly Paizo visit to White Castle. Did all survive with guts intact?

That's because you don't make it out this way. Not that I'm recommending it or anything; I'd rather be on your side of the mountains, rain and all.

Steak-N-Shake? They're good and all, but you've got to check out Five Guys next time you're in Indy. Best burgers and fries around. And yes, I am including In-N-Out in that comparison.
I'm undecided on if the burgers are the best, but they certainly are on the fries. Mmm...starchy goodness.

Luckily we have Five Guys here in Washington. For a fast food joint, their burgers are phenomenal.
I mean, they're no White Castle (which we also don't have), but they're pretty good!

Me too! :)
In fact, as far as "on my side," you're probably talking about the mountains, but I'm definitely talking about Lake Washington.

From a local I am glad you all enjoyed Indy. There are some cool things here, but you have to look hard for them. Yes, the coffee scene is bad. I am forced to patronize Star-schmucks. As far as Steak & Shake, I could give you the horror stories but I don't want to ruin it for you.
Seattle is on the top of my list of places I want to move to. I can really handle a climate that doesn't get above 80 F and is cloudy half the time. Plus, I have a more left coast mentality. I will miss White Castles.
I will have to have a job that ensures I make it back for GenCon, at least I have friends here now so I can crash at their place.
I think the best thing about Indy is that people are genuinely friendly. More so than other places I've been.
Next time you are here head down to a district called Fountain Square. It's worth the cab ride. Check out New Day Meadery and the White Rabbit Cabaret. Good times.

Like "sunglasses," it's one of those regional things that you don't really need here.
Actually Seattle sells more sunglasses per capita than any other place in the country.
I think its because everyone looses them when they don't see the sun for 3 months.

But glad you enjoyed your visit!
They used to and probably still do sell tourist T-shirts that read "Washingtonians do not tan, they rust".
I was born and raised in Washington and have been here 38 years, I would not change the weather for anything.

Look at all those error-ridden Ultimate Combat books. Hope to see a huge errata file soon.
Pizza King is the single greatest experience in pizza, and steak and shake rocks as well....Halflings from West Lafayette Indiana invented both of them....In fact we invented most forms of snack food,,,,except for anything that says Kiashi on it....that is demon thinking...I think that poser a$$ Gnomes came up with that.

Todd...you have just described why I live here in Seattle. You can keep anything above 75. I'll take my 65 in July and like it, thank you very much.

I'm sorry, I can't help it, but whenever I see someone praise 5guys' fries I have a conniption fit. Maybe things have changed, maybe the one in Orlando REALLY SUCKED but they made the nastiest fries this fat boy ever put in his mouth. Limp and flavorless.

Did anyone from Paizo come down with Con-funk?
Got it while I was there and slept it off through the power of orange juice, B-12's, and spite.
Unfortunately some folks seem hellbent on causing it. One friend literally got sneezed on, messily, on the dealer floor. Dude didn't even apologize.
Gencon Lesson #26 : If you have to sneeze or cough, cover your mouth/nose and do it into the bend of your arm, not your hand that's going to be touching merchandise or people. There are infants and the elderly present for crying out loud. [/selfrighteousindignation]

It's Orlando, man; too many people, not enough good help. It's the Disney World effect. I've yet to have a 5 Guys fries that wasn't right out of the fryer and hot enough to give you blisters on the roof of your mouth. Fortunately, they opened one up in East Lansing, Michigan, so I don't have to wait for road trips to get a fix.

Every time I think I miss snow,I look toward the snow covered mountains overlooking Los Angeles, give my family a call (back in Ohio), put on my flip flops, tank top, shorts and stroll on down to the beach or the park and enjoy another beautiful day walking my dog. :)
