Newt raises an eyebrow. "How?"

"It's the poem! The statue says 'When the last son falls upon this spot, receive my thanks' and he is the son of House Tullivor! But it didn't work."

The oread fighter slowly shakes his head.

People surely are greedy. To kill someone because of what they are just for profit... It's despicable.

"So, does this guy have a brother or something? Or are you talking about the wrong noble house?"

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

The statue is under the body.

Crowe approaches and move away the body to exam the statue.

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

There is indeed a statue under the body. When someone stands in front of the statue, close to it, the statue magically speaks the words the woman mentioned earlier.

intelligence or wisdom check, DC 13:
The word could be 'sun' rather than 'son' since those two words sound the same

peek behind the GM screen:
The puzzle above would be easier in person than PbP, because the clue would be spoken rather than written. That's why I've added the above check that isn't actually in the adventure.

The Exchange

"Son and Sun sound similar, could that be it? I have no idea what that could mean we need to do."

"The statue said: 'When the last sun falls upon this spot, receive my thanks.' What could be meant by 'the last sun'?"

Also, in the beginning of this quest, we received the following clue:
"Excepts from Ulisha’s Journal (Mausoleueum): The only thing worse than working for a Galtan nobleman is working for two Galtan noblemen — in my case, Lords Tullivor and Sarvio, both of whom are happy only when the other is not. I made a tidy sum recovering their heirlooms, but when Laban Tullivor tasked me to steal a platinum chalice belonging to the Sarvios, I took my leave (and the cup), and they’ve been hounding me since. Now Laban’s deceased, and it’s rumored his mausoleum in Gralton’s cemetery harbors a treasure. I hope you’ll not balk at tomb-robbing. Remember, these are aristocrats. I say, a plague on both their houses!"

I hope that this is hint enough.

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

You've figured out the statue is probably saying 'When the last sun falls upon this spot, receive my thanks' so what you need to do is figure out what 'the last sun' might refer to, and what 'receive my thanks' might refer to. Newt is right about the relevance of the text above.

"So, sounds like we should wait for dusk. And also deal with her."

The Exchange

"Eh, what's one more corpse between us and the loot?"

"We'll send her to the sheriff, don't worry"
Lara whispers

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

The mausoleum in question is surrounded by a fence, which you will have to scale to do anything. Once you get in, you don't have to destroy any of the actual mausoleums, only a tower that casts a shadow over the statue.

Assuming that you look around carefully, you see that the Tullivor Mausoleum, which is the one you eventually want to enter, has a clear door. That door is locked, and has an obvious trap that would be triggered by trying to break in or pick the lock. It also appears that disabling the trap will automatically open the lock.

"And while I don't want to disrespect the dead, I don't mind punishing pettiness," he continues and sets to work destroying enough of the tower to stop it from blocking the sun from getting to the correct spot.

You follow the tracks, and find another tomb. This alabaster tomb evokes a past age of Galtan architecture, including a ten-foot spire atop a broad dome. Its awnings teem with sculpted white raptors. An iron gate bears the motto, “Last to Fall.”

I think at this point we can assume no one has a mirror.

Thurgar eyes the mausoleum, looking for hand and footholds. He figures out a track and gives it a try.

Climb: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 3 - 4 = 0

It's hard to tell what gets in his way more...his short, stubby limbs or his heavy, bulky armor.

In either case, he gets no farther than his first foot and hand hold.

The spire is the obstacle that casts a shadow on the statue at sunset. As it is atop a broad dome of the mausoleum, one must climb up there to be able to change that.

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

OK, team, this game has stalled horribly. It's because none of your characters are actually able to solve the problem in the intended way; the DCs are too high. You also have no one who could use thiefy skills. This has created paralysis for all of us. I'm going to make a GM ruling in the party's favor in order to push us forward out of this mess.

None of you who have tried are able to climb up, and you're pretty sure that most of you could not possibly damage or push over the tower (to push it over, str DC 24; to damage it with your weapon, it's hardness is 10).

However, Lara, in considering her idea, happens to notice that Thurgar's heavy steel shield is very shiny and reflective.

Riannon, who had been looking alarmed when you were talking about damaging her family's mausoleum, smirks at your idea for outwitting the trap.

Just to keep the momentum up, you've figured out that you need to get the last sunlight of the day to hit the talking statue.

The Exchange

"Oh yes, I use a polish of my own design. It's finely ground pumice stone from a dormant volcano on Kortos island mixed with eucalyptus and orange oil with just a little xanthan gum to hold everything together," Thurgar says, examining his shield with no small amount of self congratulation and pride.

"I could give you the formula, if you like. It also makes an excellent dentrifice."

He hands the shield over to Lara, expecting her to admire it as much as he does.

The Exchange

Crowe tighens his grip on his earthbreaker, waiting for things(good or bad) to happen.

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

As sunset approaches, Lara holds the shield in such a way as to reflect the sun's rays onto the statue. At first, her hand shakes a little and the ray moves around. As she steadies her aim, the beam falls full on the statue, and you hear a clicking sound. Turning, you find that the iron gate to the Tullivor Mausoleum has unlocked and is swinging open. A careful examination shows that the trap is also disarmed.

Riannon continues to chuckle, gleeful that you outsmarted the puzzle and did not harm her family's tomb.

The mausoleum contains several sarcophagi, and an obviously expensive tapestry. The tapestry is clearly the treasure you came here to find. Riannon is angry for a moment that the treasure is just a tapestry, but then she remembers the joke that you got around the trap and lock without damaging her family's tomb, so she just runs away laughing.j

Sorry, I was out at a work convention last week. I could post most days but was travelling Friday and settling back in over the weekend.

You begin at the Restless Bear Inn.

This crumbling, moss-choked inn stands alone at the road’s end. Looming over its squat frame, a dense curtain of foliage marks the border of the Forest of Veils. The sign above the door reads “The Restless Bear,” and it seems to refer to a stuffed bear’s head that lolls upon a flagpole near the eaves.

perception on know:nature, DC 10:
the head belonged to a juvenile brown bear (a species common to this area), and that having been stuffed long ago, it has begun to look rather mangy

Entering the inn, you find yourselves in a large common room. This common room feels like a cave, its sagging rafters clogged with yarn, shabby ribbons, and odd miniature knick-knacks that reinforce its claustrophobic atmosphere.

The only person you can see inside is the hostess, Birdie. She turns to you, asking if you will be staying, but is also clearly willing to answer any questions.
