Jathyl was the thief, which is why the manuscript was fine until it was taken out of the hallow effect. The silence in the monastery library was attached to a hallow spell as well, so you could have retreated there to rest without her interfering.
The carving was made by Isa under the influence of Jathyl. I had to consider that one, since it was a spirit compelling an unconscious puppet to carve it, so the psychic impression was doubly removed. If it had been carved from her tree, I would have given some of the haunt as an impression, but I couldn't see her doing that while feeling it the entire time. I think in hindsight it should have shown the priestess as the last owner, but it's very open to interpretation.
No one bothered to ask Jathyl about all that though, or look at the words crawling across her skin. Not that it was an easy thing to do in combat!
