The small village of Falcon’s
Hollow is a wild place. Nestled
in the shadow of Droskar’s Crag, the
people of Falcon’s Hollow are hearty
and stern. Theirs is a life of hardships,
broken only occasionally by a handful
of festivals and the infrequent
merchant caravan.
They face constant adversity from
both the wilderness and the wiles of
man. Wolves nip at their heels and
cutpurses ply at their pockets. It is a
testament to their strength that they
even manage to survive at all

Third Party Materials. not keen on it but you are welcome to try to convince me of a 3pp class.
Ability Scores: 20 point buy
Classes: No Anti-paladin though a Vigilante or Vampire Hunter will struggle.
level: you start at level 1
Races: Core, Standard, Advanced are all fine. This takes place in a small town but there are a lot of caravans and travelers that pass though so there might be some strange looks outside of the core races.
Hit Points: maximum at first level, average thereafter or you can roll if you want t
Traits: two traits and no drawbacks
Alignment:/[b] no evil please and the characters can totally be prickly with each other but gotta be willing to work together.
[b]Starting Wealth:
max for your class
Home Rules: background skills,
Background: Falcons Hollow is a small town. Caravans travel though frequently but the town is miles away from any major city. You can have arrived with a caravan, you can be a local. Lone travelers are less conmmon due to the various dangers to be found on the road but some people get luckly. Thats up to you. If you wanna be a local I can give you some info about the locals if you want. Though I have no issue with you making people you might have ties to.

Looking forward to this. I'm considering an Ancient Guardian Druid, Oracle or Shaman of Stone, or Ranger of some type.

Those are all fun options. Love Druids and Oracles. Rangers are fun. And I have yet to see a Shaman in play and new is always a good thing.

Hi,

Added questions:

1: Any feat taxes active?
2: Starting wealth?

Stuff I wanted to play anyway:

Svetlana "Tigress" Ulyanova

Fanglord (arctic tiger) Lunar Oracle Chaotic Neutral/Chaotic good
Starting kit:
--Has a friendly arctic tiger (named "Sir Pounce"). Who has grown quite popular with the towns kids and sports a nigh unstoppably yearning for tubby rubs. She has a soft spot for kids as well.
--Came as a refugee from Irrisen, due to a purge of skinwalkers there as some Jadwiga decided they could plausibly threaten their position of power
--She does have healing spells, is charismatic and highly self sufficient, she has lived in the town for about a year, and is seen more as "exotic and useful" then "weird".

Barnabas "Stonks" Cane

Human Steelblood Bloodrager. LG
A travelling Mercenary, he was a caravan escort, got wounded defending the caravan from bandits and stayed in town to recuperate at the request of the caravan master, who was full of praise for him.
Pretends his Abyssal bloodline is totally draconic or something.

Is actually a reasonable face and takes the greatest care of his personal grooming and appearance. May or may not be attached (drawback) to his fabulous hair.

Has been assisting in the training of the local militia

Cyric "Hotstuff" de Bergerac

Human Urban Bloodrager (Phoenix bloodline) CN
(build is complicated)
A Galtese duellist, killed a (rookie) grey guardian in a duel (he didnt know he was one), and, after finding out about that, hightailed the hell out of Galt.
Moonlights as a caravan guard and ministrel.
Will dip in swashbuckler at level 2.

wealth is the starting wealth for your class.

And yeah I forgot about feat taxes. Cause I remove them in my games and its normal now to not have em. Most of the feat taxes are not a thing. Let me know which feats.

I have a soft spot for fluffy critters and tummy rubs. Plus cat jokes and oracles are always fun.

My longest running PbP character was a Bloodrages who just became a phantom for a spiritualist. Bloodrages are fun.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16

So I think I've settled on Wood Shaman (Human with Fey blood). Actual denizen of Darkmoon Wood, but not a complete stranger to the town. There are whispers that she watches to make sure the loggers don't do undue harm to the wood, or extend their harvesting of trees too far, while others say she might be a long lost or missing child of one of the earlier logging families, perhaps taken by the mysterious fey of the woods.

Either way she has been known to help on occasion, guiding a lost person back to town and the like.

Will get the build done up tonight.

Gonna give a few NPC's yall would be likely to know since if you are from or spend time in Falcons Hollow. Feel free to add relationships, good or bad, with people.

Gavel Thuldrin Kreed the boss of the Lumber Consortium. This man actually owns Falcons Hollow and is perfectly content to use that as he sees fit. He is known to be cruel on a whim. He has one one sun, Jurin Kreed. Kreed controls access to the High Market. Better quality foods, fabrics, ect. The leftovers go to the Low Market everyone can go to.

Boss Payden “Pay Day” Teedum the Overboss of the Lumber Consortium and Kreeds right hand man.

Magistrate Vamros Harg, Magistrate-Elect. He does his best to keep peace in the town but everyone knows he is under Kreeds thum.

Sheriff Deldrin Baleson used to be a simple lumberjack in the service of Thuldrin Kreed. He became elected Sheriff of Darkmoon Vale just a week after he smashed Payden Teedum's face with the flat side of an axe for which Teedum had tried to tax him, though Baleson had already paid for it.

Lady Cirthana Gensar, Priestess of Iomedae, leads the only temple in town but her faith is not the most popular in this frontier town.

Laurel Gebre is an herbalist and healer. She owns her own shop called Roots and Remedies. Locals go to her for healing before they go to the Iomedian chirch.

Kabran Bloodeye is a stout half-orc with blood-red eyes and is missing his nose. He is the owner of the Rouge Lady, a gambling hall which doubles as an illicit brothel.

Colbrin Jabbs is the local butcher and a veteran.

Brickasnurd Hildrinsocks owns the Goose 'n' Gander, a cavernous general store.

Kitani Eavewalker is a seamstress in town. A single monther whose daughter, Kimi, has dreams of being an adventurer like her father.

Also I can open up recruitment when you are ready.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Definitely can see a tie to Laurel, probably supplying her with rare herbs from deep in the forest from time to time. And yeah feel free to open the recruitment thread.

Recruitment is open. Yall are welcome to jump over there if you want.

Character ties I can see Tigress (I think Ill play her)

--Being midly peeved by Lady Cirthana Gesnar constantly trying to convert her.

--Venting to Colbrin Jabbs about it when bringing in some "specialty meat" like a bear, Tigress is on a low carb max meat diet, and generally speaking eats what her tiger eats.

--Kitanis daughter is head of the local "daaaww super cute white tiger" fanclub.

Kitanis's daughter, Kimi, is the leader of a group of kids, including the butchers son Mirka, and would lead that club :)

And I always support a less than friendly but still not outright hostile relationship.

Yeap, those are fun.

Currently writing backstory. She arrived pretty bloodied, with a more bloodied tiger and carrying 2 merchants. Stumbled into Iomedaes temple because her lizard brain (she was running on fumes at that point) was "Temple=Healer".

Cirthana did figure out instantly that her tiger, who was carrying the second merchant in its teeth, was not a threat and spammed some channels.

Coming in with hero vibes. That will get lots of people to like her and others to quietly wish she would move on.

Feat tax starting point Im cool with these for some of the feat taxes to go awaay. If there are others you might want to add let me know

She, like many chaotic characters I play, will totally lie, have a somewhat opportunistic connection to reality etc., but if she gives her word freely it is rock solid.

Actually, there is even an oracle curse for it, legalistic.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16

SO getting the details on Elowen, hammered out. Loving that the Wood Shaman has features that can make this character happen. She'll also have a plant familiar that seems like just a vine wrapped around her arm most of the time.

Female Skinwalker (Fanglord) HP 22/22 AC 17/15/12 For=2 Ref=3 Will 3/6 (vs charm compulsion) CMD 15 Init 2 Perc 4/-1 (to spot enemies) Level 1 spells 4/4 Oracle 3

So, current capabilities, muchkin edition:

Svetalana and Sir pounce are a reasonably effective due, Svetlana essentially twfs while wearing a shield and medium armor, thus sporting a respectable AC of 19 (she has a primary claw and a primary bite). The tiger is a tiger. And also has a reasonable AC of 16. Thats up to 5 fairly reasonable attacks per turn.

She is survival focused skill wise, but has a bit of face skills to help out.

Spell casting is CLW, Divine favor and command, pretty reasonable things imho.

She aims to become a reasonable face and competent natural attacker, her tiger will become intelligent at level 4. Relatively standard fair.

She is extremely specific about keeping her promises.

See in darkness gives her a fair bit of night time capabilities, although it costs a claw or a bite, and her perception is decent. I didnt find a way to get stealth as a class skill though, so her reconnaissance aint great.

Share spells allows her to cast personal buff spells on her tiger, keeping it quite relevan.

I dont think I will do much dipping etc. likely straight oracle.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Elowen I am loving that the shaman is gonna let vine attacked happen! Clearly, I should look more into the Shaman.

Svetlana "Tigress" Ulyanova I am enjoying everything so far. I think there is a trait that gives perception as a class skill. But there is no issue having that be someone else's thing.

Granted I figured you two would have great characters and I guessed right. Going to keep recruitment open till friday so I can ponder over the weekend. Going to try to have at least three picked out by monday or tuesday. Telias said he had to many games going so he won't be joining this one.

Svetlana gets perception as a class skill from her mystery, handle animal was kind of hard to get (the trait I used is normally a racial one for gnomes, but I figured that a kind of half tiger would get it to).

There was a 3rd party curse I was looking at, sanguine:

You are slow to recognize adversity or danger, although your optimism can be contagious.

Effect

You take a -5 penalty to Perception checks to notice opponents or traps and to Sense Motive checks. You cannot be demoralized, and during surprise rounds and against traps, you gain a +1 luck bonus to AC and saving throws. Your luck bonus increases by+ 1 every five curse levels.

At 5th level, you gain aura of courage, as a paladin.

At 10th level, when your wounds would normally make you unconscious, you become staggered and remain conscious for one round.

At 15 level, you gain immunity to compulsion spells and spell-like abilities. Each ally within 10 feet of you gains a +4 morale bonus on saving throws against compulsion effects. This ability functions only while you are conscious, not if you are unconscious or dead.

Reading up-thread regarding feat taxes... if you are OK with Weapon Finesse going away that would be grand. That leaves Odelai with a feat that can be better spent on something witchy or fun.

Meow sniff The large (medium actually, but the kids have been feeding him waaay too many sweets) tiger approached Jenkin,

A gentle flick of his tail almost seeming to say
Frontline friend! Ohhh, artificial anti tree claws! You two legs are so inventive! You have to be because most of you dont have proper claws or teeth! Man, that must suck!

As his eyes flick to odelai, it approaches her, sniffing her and inspecting her white hair, finding the color to be aesthetically pleasing, because the arctic tiger was obviously a fan of that exact shade.

The hefty brute rolls on its back, almost inviting Odelai to rub its tubby.

HP:22 | AC:14 ; T:14 ; FF:11 ; CMD:12/9 | Fort:+1 ; Ref:+3 ; Will:+4 | Init:+2 ; PER:+11 (Low Light)

He's like a big fuzzy rug...

Odelai resists the urge to lie on the big cat or measure him for a saddle... but the idea of riding this big beast through the woods is - compelling. She has a brief vision of herself, grey skin, white-hair whipping behind as her mottled white mount streaks into battle.

She blinks the thought away. "Where are my manners?" She uses what nails and strength she has to give the battle-cat a good belly scratching.

She pays little attention to the cockroach that scuttles from its hiding place in her hair and drops onto the big cat. When it flips onto its carapace, exposing its own segmented belly for scratching, Odelai hrumphs and directs a small tendril of hair to rub the tiny creature. informing the roach, "Jealousy is never pretty."

Home sick from work today so I'll try getting the gameplay started hopefully tomorrow. Feel free to ask questions of me and I'll check em later. And if any of you know each other

Its also a bit easier to come up with encounters for a level 3 party :).

@GM did you consider allowing the Sanguine curse? Its not a big deal if you dont, legalistic can actually be a great plot hook.

Oh, riding Sir Pounce? Doable, but you better have OK handle animal, ride, and a lot of sweets.

Svetlana and Sir Pounce are basically business partners/good friends, not superior and inferior, they eat the same stuff, sleep under the same roof, hunt together etc. She is absolutely fine with him making his own acquaintances and alliances.

Sanguine is a fine curse.

HP:22 | AC:14 ; T:14 ; FF:11 ; CMD:12/9 | Fort:+1 ; Ref:+3 ; Will:+4 | Init:+2 ; PER:+11 (Low Light)

Riding Pounce was just an idle thought and Odelai would employ a long-term campaign of buttering the big kitty up to make it happen. :D I tend to hatch plans that don't have a pay off for several levels and I'm good with that.

Also, (for my small-legged characters) I'm always trying to figure out how I'm going to keep up with the 30' move characters until I can get Boots of Striding.

In terms of knowing folks, my path may have crossed with Mightypion before as the name is quite familiar and I think Mark Thomas and I played in a game together ages ago... but I'd have to compare our games lists to be sure.

Changing gears, I would like to chat about builds for a moment. Odelai is based off a higher-level NPC in my game. In that world, she is a gestalt Witch/Druid. I liked her so much I thought it might be a kick to play her evolution here. However, I don't want to steal anyone's thunder and I know we've got a Shaman and there is some talk about druids... so I am 100% fine with her NOT multiclassing in Druid if anyone would prefer to own that niche. I could go straight Witch with her or even consider some other multiclass option to make her entertaining or deadly. So, I guess my open question for the group is - how do you all feel about those options? And (related to that) are any of you guys planning a multiclass build?

oversized hobbit

MAPS! :) I am very glad the new game is going well.

OH Mark Thomas, YES, I know you too. Devie and Ahyoka have been in a drinking game for a bit now.

I have no worries about anyone stepping on Penelope's toes even if you multiclassed into a divine hunter pally.

Do our characters know each other? I assume the town is small enough any of us who grew up there at least have a passing knowledge of the others.

Female Skinwalker (Fanglord) HP 22/22 AC 17/15/12 For=2 Ref=3 Will 3/6 (vs charm compulsion) CMD 15 Init 2 Perc 4/-1 (to spot enemies) Level 1 spells 4/4 Oracle 3

Probably straight oracle for Svetlana. She doesnt have the right alignment for Scaled fist+oracle shenangians, and as a natural attacker she doesnt want a fighter dip that much.

I did consider steelblood dip on her (steelblood is a nice dip, but a bad main class), but probably nah.

We are both in price of immortaltiy, where I play wannabe cool Barb dad Aeric.

@Odelai, something that could be an option for multiclass for you could be mutagenic mauler (brawler subclass).
It gives you access to mutagen (dex is probably pretty good), improved unarmed strike, and you count as a level 1 monk, meaning plausible access o crane style. Dodge improves your CMD making it harder to escape grapples, since you are likely grappling a bit. Your hair is sadly a natural weapon, and as such it doesnt work with brawlers flurry.

Vivisectionist could work as well, also access to mutagens, or also cognatogens, shield spell (which is pretty handy for a semi melee witch), some sneak attack.

Funnily enough, the most effective white haired witch I build was a gunslinger. The GM allowed the white haired witch archetype to stack with seducer witch (and replace the INT based hair with CHA based hair), the lady was a mysterious stranger, and the hair repeatedly resulted in foes getting grappled 10 feet away from a gunslinger, good times.

Originally I was thinking of a VMC fighter/rogue build for Jenkin; he already gets a small bonus to flanking from his Dirty Fighter trait, I thought adding sneak attack on top of that would be fun. VMC isn't on the table, though, so I'm considering dipping into a level of rogue at some point, either at 2nd or 3rd level. That would give me a start on sneak attack damage, which I can keep progressing with the occasional Accomplished Sneak Attacker feat, plus, since we seem to lack someone with Trapfinding, it would give us someone who can deal with those pesky magic traps.

Yep.

Shaman is weird and that the class is technically an Oracle/Witch hybrid, but definitely has more of a Druidy feel to it.

Given that my primary spirit is Wood, for wandering I was probably most likely going to use either Nature, Life (if we end up starved for healing), or Stone (situationally), I'll mostly be filling the druid niche but if you wanted to multi-class to Druid that's fine there's a whole variety of nature based character styles

I appreciate your flexibility. My initial idea was to go more of an elemental-damaging-spells kind of druid to dovetail with her witchy Elemental patron and 'Pyromaniac' racial trait. That said, I think I'm gonna put a pin in having her multi-class for now so we can see how the team shakes out for a few levels. I can always tack on another class later if we feel there is a niche in our lineup that needs addressing. GM DAA, if you've got an issue with that (i.e. you wanted me in the game because of the witch/druid combo) please let me know. Otherwise, I'm going to tweak her stat points a tiny bit and finalize her as a Witch with a capital W.

Cheers!

Classes are the last thing I tend to think about when I'm running a game. More so that the characters are interesting and will be able to play well together. If thats being friendly, competitive, romantic, or argumentative I don't mind. Less than friendly can be fun.

And if there are niches unfilled, I can tailor a game to avoid those issues, depending on what is lacking. Or people have to get more creative to account for the missing roll.

I have no issues with how you all want to build your classes. Munkins are fun cause I get to go harder on monsters. non munkins means I dont have to mess with monsters. I don't have a strong preference.

In the now long distance game I am running I have six players, four of them took leadership, there is one extra ncp, two familiars, and one animal companion. And the summoning wizard now has lesser planar binding. And now they have a crew of 8 for their airship. I also tacked on the Mythic ruleset cause I like to suffer :) half of them have some weird builds.

So get as weird as you want.

So Penelope Pinch and Jenkin Ternham have lived in Falcons Hollow their whole lives.

Svetlana "Tigress" Ulyanova has been living in town about a year?

Elowen visits occasionally but lives in the woods?

Odelai the White is just arriving? Or has she been here for awhile?

Sounds like Penelope and Jenkin would know each other. Growing up in town, and about the same age. Penelope is two years older, but a half-elf so took a little longer than a full human to reach maturity.

So played together as kids, less so when his troubles began, and potentially completely when his mother died. His maturity level had probably outpaced her at that point by a year or two which is A LOT in the teenage years.

Jenkin is unemployed at the moment, right? I was thinking either Penelope could be 'employed' at the temple, militia, or the occasional hunter for game.

I can move her background skill from craft(bows) to whatever makes most sense as a job, GM. (but not handle animal, she NEEDS handle animal to keep every stray anything from sinking their teeth into her from abundant, unasked for, petting).

The parens part would mean why Penelope and Svetlana might know each other. A year of a tiger being in town would mean Svetlana would know of Penelope's existence, since she would be eager to get to know the tiger.

Whether that is a source of great irritation from the crazy person's persistence, that it is just tolerated, or that they are friends at any level, is of course up to Svetlana.

Oh, I dunno about that, Jenkin has done a magnificent job of not letting his troublesome life events mature him even a whit. But yes, they'd definitely know each other from around town.

'Discovering interesting new opportunities!' is how he would put it. While plopped on a bar stool with a stein of ale in hand, of course.

Penelope Pinch wrote:

Likewise, Jenkin has Craft (bows) down, and it's available to be moved. If only one person in the party had it, Penelope seems to make much more sense, bows being Her Thing. Maybe craft (weapons) would make more sense for Jenkin, the boy might know how to make himself a new hatchet out of a stick and two shingles.
