Wands and Attacks of Opportunity

3.5/d20/OGL

This is most likely a very old subject for most groups, but it only came up in my group for the first time today.

1 - Does drawing a wand provoke an attack of opportunity?

2 - Do you threaten the squares around you if you have a wand out that deals touch attacks such as a wand of shocking grasp?

I was under the impression (perhaps mistaken) that a wand was considered a weapon for the purposes of drawing and wielding it, but I can't find any evidence to support this?

Thanks in advance for the feedback!

1) I don't know about drawing it i always considered it like drawing a dagger. So that would make it a move equivelent, unless you have quickdraw.

2) No. Unless you've already cast the spell and are 'holding' the charge you don't threaten. It irritated our wizard in one game, but I liked being able to sunder the wand w/o an attack of oportunity.

Drawing a weapon so that you can use it in combat, or putting it away so that you have a free hand, requires a move action. This action also applies to weapon-like objects carried in easy reach, such as wands.

Drawing a weapon does not provoke an AoO (from the table, which is harder to quote).

Wands use the spell trigger activation method, so casting a spell from a wand is usually a standard action that doesn’t provoke attacks of opportunity.

But I don't know of anything that would allow you to be treated as armed merely because you are wielding a wand. (If you have already cast a touch spell and are holding it, you are considered armed, which might be what you are thinking of.)

Matt, Doug,

Both answers were a great help to me thanks. :-)
