Eberron Crossover
Introducing the T.V. series "The Eberron Expanse" (working title). It's a science fantasy T.V. Show using the popular Eberron world as a backdrop. The series is set in Eberron's Solar System, and you will be playing characters in this T.V. show.
"It's three hundred years after the Last War . . ."
Formula: The player characters are veterans after a war for independence from Eberron (Earth like) and the Planet Okra (Mars like). With the building of HyperGates, mankind can go and explore and colonize the outer planets of the Eberron Solar System.
The Twist: The Player Characters are more concerned with putting food on the table and may be cavalier about the jobs they take.
The Theme: Space Exploration.
The System: Starfinder. Of course we can do this with Stars Without Number or the Expanse. But Starfinder can do this, trust me.
PRODUCTION DESIGN
Every series has production design, and this is no different. I'd like you to watch Firefly, the Expanse, Cowboy Bebop, Babylon 5, and maybe Serenity for inspiration. There are some differences. Time Travel is a thing, but House Orien controls Time Travel. Hyperspace is a thing, but the gates are constructed by House Cannith and operated by House Lyrandar. There is little exploration beyond the Solar System. The gates allow for fast travel. Hyperspace works like the drift.
* Races or Species allowed: Human, Android, Ysoki, Kasatha (from another star system), Lashunta, Vesk (from another star system), Shirren (from some other star system), and plus the legacy races. Players who want to create a character with a race from Eberron (Dragonborn, Shifter, Changling, Kalashtar) can work with me privately about a conversion.
* Classes Allowed: Envoy, Mechanic, Mystic, Operative, Solarian, Soldier, and Technomancer. I want to keep the class selection simple. It's a TV series after all.
* Themes allowed: All from Starfinder, Pact Worlds, and Near Space.
* Creating characters: Use 10 point buy. Try not to create evil characters. Keep your backgrounds simple, I don't need a novel. Create Level 3 characters.

Any opportunity to use alternate class features from the other books or are you staying conservative with the options?
I have the following books, more are coming, but I can catch up! You may use the alternate class features in the following books:
Starfinder Alien Archive 2Starfinder Alien Archive 3
Starfinder Alien Archive 4
Starfinder Alien Archive
Starfinder Armory
Starfinder Character Operations Manual
Starfinder Core Rulebook
Starfinder Galaxy Exploration Manual
Starfinder Interstellar Species
Starfinder Near Space
Starfinder Pact Worlds
Starfinder Starship Operations Manual

Yeah going for Drow or Elf operative!
We could have a little chat about what the differences of drow and elf bring with respect to Eberron in this scenario.
Will we have or acquire a ship at some point? Or is traveling only through the gates? How do those work? Are they for ships or installed on planets?

EltonJ |

You'll have a ship, so I was wondering if we should name the series after the ship (kinda like "Firefly"). After all, the ship is it's own character.
I'd like the players to cooperatively build the ship using Starfinder core and the Starship Operations Manual. That way, you all have a stake in the ship. :)
As for gates, they work like the gates on Babylon 5 and Cowboy Bebop. They are gates into hyperspace. Hyperdrives do exist, but they usually put them on larger ships (something like a heavy freighter).
You can pick a ship frame from here.

Asanan Elf
Some Castrovelian elves dwell on Asana, rather than Sovyrian.
Lashunta influence—with the aid of elven magic used during the
Gap, some scholars say—has caused these elves to develop limited
telepathy and lashunta magic, as the lashunta racial traits.
This replaces elven immunities and elven magic.
Actually, I think that can work. Are you planning on taking the mark of shadow?

EltonJ |

Could I request full-blooded orc as an option? I don't think they count as a legacy race.
Orcs are green, have red eyes, and have either blonde, red, brown, or black hair. :) You can do a full-blooded orc as long as he doesn't look like an orc from the Alien Archives.

EltonJ |

JR Klein here. As you can see, I ended up making a half-orc instead. Basic idea is that he was born in a troubled place and was trained for a war which everyone expected, but which never actually happened. So now he's just a hired gun who drifts from place to place, lacking purpose.
Sounds like a good concept to me.

Horrible purple. Everything's right except for the purple skin. Let me open one of my Alien Archive and give you the reference:
Page 90 of Alien Archive 2 shows them off. Now that's not what an actual orc looks like.

I wasn't planning on taking mark of the shadow, because i did not consider the option.
Might be an interesting option though, how would that work?I was thinking about taking unarmed attack and the operative exploit which enhances it at some point though. Not sure yet.

Just googled it, looks weird. I mean who knows what happens to orcs in space and might be a change breaking up the stereotypes.
But half-orcs still seem to be green?I like the drow purple skin though.

Maybe they want to avoid Blizzard (it's an awful picture though.)

Master Han Del of the Web |

Eh, it's more of a blue-grey and I do actually like grey-skinned orcs. In the main Starfinder lore they've been kept largely as a slave/servitor race for the Drow for at least several centuries and judging by the half-orc art, green does still crop up from time to time. The blue-grey might be the result of them living on a dark, airless rock under the thumb of a bunch of edgelord elves.
But to be honest the art team is probably trying to avoid Games Workshop and Warhammer 40k more than Blizzard. Trust me, it is a real pain to find any art for a space orc without getting 40k orks, whose whole aesthetic I dislike.

Hayato Ken |

While 40k can be nice, a certain other company is a real pain, i agree there. I wonder how long they can pull off this behavior before the unavoidable backlash.
On the other hand, there are quite some companies and people in line for some backlash^^
I got the outlines for my character already finished, the rest would be adapted to the other party members and general party composition.
My character would be in for the roles of possibly best pilot in the system, skill monkey and some damage dealing/assassinating/spying/sjady stuff with mark of the shadow dragonmark shenanigans.

Master Han Del of the Web |

Got a full orc bombard soldier mostly built out. Big, scary, and specializing in heavy weapons. Eventually I want to get my hands on one of my two favorite heavy weapons, the Apocalypse Beam or the Singularity Cannon.
For now, he's obviously the muscle, something like Jayne but with a more thoughtful bent and a well-rounded understanding of how the universe works. I'll put some more details together on my winter break.

Hayato Ken |

I made some inquiries and it seems that melee operatives are not the best and using improved unarmed strike is even worse, except you go for a STR route, what isn't my plan really.
Would there be some compromises or things like the ring of fangs and other crafts possible?
Also, when is this projected to start?
Seems there are 3-4 players, that should be good right?
I'll be away until the end of the year with less to no computer access.

DR34-M12 |

Okay lv 3 build should be good to go.
DR34-M12 or "Dreams" is a talented hacker and mechanic. "Just fixing it" isn't an option for her, instead she prefers to add an artistic and/or dramatic flair to her creations and repairs. She's also handy with a laser rifle and not at all opposed to using it.
Dreams would work as either a vet of the war or a recruit after the fact. Either way I imagine whoever the captain is found her toiling away on boring repairs and offered her a chance for more excitement. A chance she lept at.
The crew might occasional have to deal with their room being taken apart and put back together because Dreams thought of a semi self-sustaining, bioluminescent algae fixture instead of replacing a lightbulb. But they'll always have a loyal friend ready to get into trouble.

Any handheld computer can be inserted directly into the port, while larger systems need to be connected by an adapter cable. Having the system connected directly to your nervous system obviates the need for an interface to access data on a system. Actually operating the system requires you to use the Computers skill as usual. Some closed systems don’t allow data access or require you to do some rewiring to connect with a datajack (usually an Engineering check).

Special Abilities

Theme Knowledge:You’re obsessed with the intricacies of constructs and how automated machines function. You can easily identify what a machine’s function is and have an easier time attempting to access the internal programming of mechanized life-forms. Reduce the DC of Engineering checks to identify creatures and technology by 5. Computers is a class skill for you, though if it is a class skill from a class you take at 1st level, you instead gain a +1 bonus to Computers checks. In addition, you gain an ability adjustment of +1 to Intelligence at character creation.
Artificial Intelligence:
You construct an artificial intelligence (or AI), a sophisticated program of self-motivated code that you can access for help in a variety of endeavors. This AI is the product of your own genius, far more advanced and complicated than any available for sale to consumers (though it falls short of being truly self-aware), and only you know the secrets of its creation and operation. Your AI can take one of two forms: a drone or an exocortex. You must pick one of these forms upon taking your first level of mechanic, and once this choice is made, it cannot be changed.
Exocortex
You begin play with an exocortex, an artificial processor that interacts with and augments your biological brain’s cognitive functions, which can aid you in a variety of tasks, from combat to digital infiltration. Your exocortex is implanted within your physical body or brain, similar to a piece of cybernetic hardware, allowing your AI to access your mind and feed you information. As you gain levels, your exocortex advances in sophistication and processing power—see Exocortex on here. Only you can access or interact with your exocortex.
Bypass:You are skilled at getting inside computer systems and electronic devices. At 1st level, you gain a +1 insight bonus to Computers and Engineering skill checks. At 5th level, every 4 levels thereafter, and at 20th level, this bonus increases by 1.
Custom Rig(Ex):You have created a customized toolkit you can use to hack systems and items. Your custom rig can be configured to take up an upgrade slot on your armor or can be installed as a cybernetic augmentation system in your brain (though it can be combined with a datajack for the same price as installing a datajack normally), your eyes, or an arm. For more information, see augmentations. Alternatively, you can configure it to be a handheld device, meaning that you must retrieve it and hold it to use it effectively. While using this rig, you always count as having the appropriate tool or basic kit for any Computers or Engineering skill check you attempt. Some mechanic tricks and drone mods require the use of a custom rig. In addition, you can use your custom rig as a Mk I comm unit. Finally, if you have a drone, you can use your custom rig to communicate over an encrypted channel with your drone to issue commands to its AI or directly control it at a range of 2,500 feet.
If your custom rig is damaged, destroyed, lost, or stolen, you can kitbash a new one from any engineering kit, hacking kit, or other technological toolkit, reconfiguring the materials into a new custom rig with 1 hour of work. You can have only one custom rig at a time. If you create a new custom rig, your old one functions as a normal toolkit of whatever type you made it from and can no longer be used with your mechanic tricks.
You can also use your custom rig to communicate over an encrypted channel with your ship, allowing you to access your ship’s downloaded data sets and transponder (see page 430) at a range of 5 miles. If you have a drone, you can issue commands to or directly control your drone at the same range.
Combat Tracking(Ex): Your exocortex provides you with enhanced combat ability, granting you proficiency with heavy armor and longarms. At 3rd level, you gain weapon specialization in longarms just as if your class granted proficiency. As a move action during combat, you can designate a foe for your exocortex to track. As long as that target is in sight, the exocortex feeds you telemetry, vulnerabilities, and combat tactics, allowing you to make attacks against that target as if your base attack bonus from your mechanic levels were equal to your mechanic level. Designating another target causes you to immediately lose this bonus against the previous target.
Memory ModuleYou can use your exocortex’s memory module to enhance your own knowledge. Once per day, as a reaction while not in combat, you can reroll a failed skill check (see page 243) to recall knowledge (see page 143). In addition, your exocortex grants you the Skill Focus feat as a bonus feat. You can’t use your exocortex’s memory module while combat tracking is activated. Every time you gain a mechanic level, you can rebuild your exocortex’s memory module, replacing the exocortex’s bonus Skill Focus feat with Skill Focus in a different skill.
Overcharge (Ex): As a standard action, you can use your custom rig to overcharge and attack with a ranged energy weapon or a melee weapon with the powered special property (see page 181) that you’re holding. If you hit, you deal 1d6 additional damage of the same type the weapon normally deals. This attack uses three times as many charges from the battery or power cell as normal and can’t be used if the weapon doesn’t have enough charges. This trick has no effect on a weapon without a battery or power cell. You can instead use this ability as a move action on a touched powered weapon that is unattended or attended by an ally to grant the same effect to that weapon’s next attack before the beginning of your next turn.
Overload(EX):As a standard action, you can cause a short in an electronic device, including most ranged energy weapons, melee weapons with the powered special property, or a single armor upgrade. This makes the device nonfunctional for 1 round. Overload doesn’t cause a locked door, safe, or other device to open, but it prevents anyone from opening it for 1 round. You must be adjacent to the device to use this ability. If you have a drone, you can instead use this ability on an electronic device adjacent to your drone. If you have an exocortex with the wireless hack ability, you can instead use this ability on any electronic device within range of your exocortex’s wireless hack. If you use overload on an item or armor upgrade in someone’s possession, the owner can attempt a Reflex saving throw to negate the effect (DC = 10 + half your mechanic level + your Intelligence modifier). Overload doesn’t affect androids, cybernetics, drones, powered armor, robots, or creatures with the technological subtype (all of which have shielding against this sort of attack), or items larger than Medium. Once a device has been successfully overloaded, a residual static charge prevents that device from being overloaded again for 1 minute.
Weapon SpecializationYou gain the Weapon Specialization feat as a bonus feat for each weapon type this class grants you proficiency with.

While never having served in any official government capacity, DeeCo did manage to do enough damage to get a price on her hide. Certainly not a fan of any particular establishment— much less an establishment that was maintaining order by crushing dissenters under their bootheels– the "CrashCorps" was the name officially given to the saboteurs that were undermining efforts in Okuru city. While definitely contributing to the failure of the occupying forces to gain a foothold, eventually things got too hot to remain. Any destination of "not here" worked for her, and the bunch of misfits on this ship all but guarantee that boredom is not something that would linger long, if ever.
A complete fan of "function over form", her designs are undoubtedly functional, but their aesthetics leave something to be desired. She would argue that is part of the point.

Looks good, are you sure the character is at level 3?

DR34-M12 |

Haha, i might root for elf supremacy :P
Still don't know whether to do an unarmed or melee build at all with the operative. The comments on that i could find aren't really satisfying or self-explanatory.
Seems to me it's like a rogue in PF1/2 a bit, but of course the game is different.
Operative is definitely the rogue of Starfinder, although as you said there are differences. For an unarmed build, I'd recommend taking 3 levels in Soldier with the Ascetic Warrior alternate class feature. This will give you the foundation you need to make unarmed strikes more than a backup option. The Qi Adept fighting style will get your unarmed to count as magic, which helps with DR and incorporeal creatures as well as being thematic.
From there taking levels in operative and picking up the Death Strike operative talent will let use use trick attack and triple/quad attack with your unarmed strikes.
That should give you everything you need for a viable unarmed operative. It might not be the most tuned build but you'll easily carry your weight. Plus it frees up weapon funds that you can spend on other things. And if we every run into a situation were we don't have weapons you'll be our ace in the hole.
Of course you could also just go straight soldier with the initial set up as well. That'd give you more damage and toughness but less utility.

"Huh?" The android asked as she pushed the headset back from one of her auditory receivers. The blaring sound of goblincore filled the cramped engineering section the pair stood in. Though DR34-M12 hadn't been listening to her crewmate, thankfully her backup systems had. "Oh yeah, isn't it great!?" She responded after taking a microsecond to review her logs. "Didn't even have to increase the power consumption to get it that bright. You're welcome!" The smiling android's face beamed with pride as her circuits glowed a bright yellow.
